Sonic's POV

It's been about a month since I told the city I was going to stop fighting Eggman. So far, nothing has happened. No Eggman attacks at all. Not even a test run as far as I know. Maybe with me "defeated," Egghead decided that his job is done. At least, that's what I'm hoping happened.

"Sonic?", I turn around and see Tails, walking again and getting stronger everyday. "Someone's on the phone for you."

"Thanks, little bud.", I get up from the couch and go to the phone, answering. "Sonic the Hedgehog."

"Why, long time since I've heard from you."

"Egghead? Why are you calling me? We had a deal.", I reply, looking around to make sure Tails wasn't listening. He was in the other room, about to head to his work shop. "I haven't even tried to fight you."

"Yes, yes, I know, but you see, I'm bored without someone here to keep me busy.", he says. My fists tighten at my side. What is he planning?

"SONIC!", I drop the phone and dart to Tails, without a second thought. When I find him, he's outside, wide eyed at the robots that surrounded the house. Eggman was right there.

"You see, hedgehog, I want a challenge. You're the only one that gives me that challenge.", he looks at me, with a smile. "So, the deal is off."

"Tails, run!", I order, as the robots begin to surround us. I attack all of them, destroying two, but one manages to grab me and throw me against the side of the house.

"Sonic!", Tails didn't listen to me, instead, he ran towards me. I force myself up, and see one of the robots about to blast him when he's a foot away from me. Not this time.

"Tails!", I run over to him, covering him, and then something hits my back. It burns and I fall, Tails still in my arms, and I'm still covering him.

"A-are y-you okay?", Tails' soft voice rings through, as the robots stop and Eggman laughs.

"I suppose that's enough for a warning. Until next time, hedgehog.", with that, he leaves. I get up, wondering why Eggman didn't finish me off the moment he had a chance. He knows that he may never get a chance like this again, right? So, why would he not finish off his worst enemy and take over the world? That's what he wants, right?

"Are you okay?", Tails repeats, this time without the stutter. I look at him, and we both get up. My back seemed to be burnt and bleeding a bit. But, I'm a fast healer. And, he didn't get hurt. That's all that matters.

"I told you to run because if you had gotten hurt, Tails, CPS would have taken you away… and I would have never saw you again.", I don't answer him, but I do tell him what was really wrong.

"I didn't get hurt, though. CPS won't take me away, will they?"

"I don't know, Tails. With Eggman attacking us again, the city needs me. But, I need you. But, if Eggman keeps this up, Tails, you're going to be put in danger and they may take you away.", I look down.

"What is it, Sonic?"

"Tails… if something happens to you, it's on me-"

"That's what I'm here for.", I turn around, and see Knuckles walking towards us, with a ticked off expression. Well, come to think of it, that's his usual expression. "Sonic, if both of us work on the Eggman thing, we can both make sure Tails isn't put in danger. At least long enough to make sure he can actually fight Eggman. We can train him, right?"

"Yeah, but CPS-"

"Look, Sonic, you can't just stop caring about Tails. That is beyond your ability. Regardless, Eggman knows that he means something to you. Taking him away won't keep him out of danger. In fact, it'll bring him in more! Without us around, Eggman can get him easily.", Knuckles cuts me off. I stop. I never thought of that. It actually is safer for him to be with me.

"Tails, we're going to have to train you. It won't be easy, but are you up for it?", I ask him. He nods.

"Anything, Sonic."
