A/N: Holy crap. I've reached the double digits :O Also, I'm SO SO SORRY for the wait. I honestly have no idea where I'm going with this and my muse fluttered away. I didn't expect this story to make it this long. Thank you, though! I'll do my best to not keep you guys waiting for so long again.
Disclaimer: I don't own Glee. Just Rain and her family.
"Huh... Not bad."
"Yeah, she's actually improved."
Those were the whispers amongst the "Team Rachel" camp during Johanna's performance. The song she chose was a Chinese pop song, hoping to gain extra favors to add onto her home field advantage. The confidence she was exuding unnerved Xiao for a moment.
"Hey jie jie," she whispered to her sister. "Are you sure Rachel will win this? You know Jo has an edge here, right?" Rain let out a soft scoff, as to not interrupt from the performance before them.
"Oh ye of little faith. I told you Rachel was amazing. You'll see. She'll win the family over before the song even ends."
"Rain, this isn't YOUR pride on the line here!"
"Shh. Just trust me. And trust in Rachel. She'll knock the socks off of everyone here like it was nothing."
The younger Song sibling quieted down, though she still had a worried look on her face. Rain glanced away from their cousin's little performance to look at Rachel and Quinn, who were doing mini vocal exercises together in the corner of the adjacent room. She smiled at the sight before turning back in time to see that Johanna had finished her performance. It was met with a round of applause from everyone witnessing it, including a few polite claps from Team Rachel. With a smug look, Jo walked up to the Song siblings and smirked.
"Beat that."
"I intend to." Rachel had walked up to the group with her head held high. Despite being much shorter than Johanna, she still intimidated her slightly. The Asian girl wasn't going to show it though.
"I don't see how you can, white girl. You're a little out of your element here." Jo glared down at Rachel, but it didn't affect the diva in the slightest.
"Then it'll be much more satisfying when I beat you. Be prepared to honor your end of the bargain, Johanna."
Rachel marched straight up to the microphone and took her place in front of the audience. Quinn noticed that the others had gone back to their own private conversations. Only a few of the adults were paying attention to Rachel, one of which was Devon, who had a look of curiosity on her face. The blonde worried her lower lip for a moment before remembering that the one that was about to sing was her bright star and that she shouldn't be worried about losing at all.
'Wait. MY bright star? Where did that come from?' Quinn asked herself. She didn't get a chance to linger on the thought since Rain made her way to the microphone as well.
The Asian had seen her roommate's eyes linger to the crowd and decided to help a bit by acting as the diva's personal MC. She walked up to Rachel, grabbing the mike for the moment and turning to her family and friends.
"Everyone! You just heard Johanna sing wonderfully," She started, speaking in Chinese. "But now I would like to introduce my friend, Rachel, who I think is an amazing singer. However, I would like for you to judge how she is for yourself if that would be all right. Will you do me the honor of doing that for me?"
The crowd agreed in unison and turned their attention to Rachel as she took the microphone from Rain. She received a wink from the taller female before she was left to do her thing. Rachel closed her eyes and waited for the music to start. As it did, everyone's head seemed to perk up. Unbeknownst to the two odd ones out, the song that Rachel chose was a really popular song that everyone loved to attempt to sing every time they got together.
"Take me back into the arms I love..."
As the brunette began to sing, all eyes were on her. Those who were reclined on their seats sat up and leaned closer to listen with rapt attention. A few of the women began to sway slightly to the song while the kids who didn't care much for the competition and singing poked their heads from their hiding places to listen in.
Rain looked at Xiao and grinned when she saw her with her jaw to the ground. The grin spread wider on her face when she saw the look of disbelief on Johanna's face. Quinn watched as everyone became mesmerized by her friend. Pride swelled in her chest as she too contented herself with watching Rachel sing.
The inhabitants of the house waited with bated breath as the climax of the song was approaching. Rain's grin spread impossibly wider as the seconds ticked by. Then, the moment of quiet came before Rachel took a deep breath and belted out the next line. Right at that moment, everyone's jaw, even Rain's and Quinn's, dropped straight to the ground and it remained that way until the song ended.
Silence filled the room. The only sound came from the karaoke score indicator on the television. However, no one paid attention to the score. Everyone's eyes were on the tiny brunette in front of them. The silence was a bit unnerving until a lone clap filled the air. Rachel looked over to see Rain clapping her hands, followed shortly by Quinn and then Xiao. Soon enough, the house erupted with the sounds of applause.
Xiao turned to Johanna, flanked by Rain, Quinn and Rachel, with a smug look on her face.
"Make sure you enjoy your spring break, Jo. 'Cause come time we go back to school, you're under my command."
The other girl just huffed and stormed out of the house, leaving Team Rachel to cheer and celebrate for the rest of the night.

The next morning, Rain woke up relatively early (considering how late the party went on last night) and went down to the living room, leaving Quinn and Rachel both curled up close on her futon. Once downstairs, she saw Xiao cleaning the mess that remained from the events of the previous night.
"Need help, little sis?" Xiao's head perked up as she looked at her sister, a look of relief evident on her face.
"Oh thank God! Mama left to go out with the other women and Baba left me to clean on my own so he could entertain the men."
With a chuckle, Rain grabbed a trash bag and began helping her sister pick up all the trash laying around. They made sure to put the beer bottles into separate bags to recycle and stay quiet for the only other two inhabitants in the house. They spoke quietly, talking about who left and who had remained to hang out with their parents. Soon enough, the conversation lead to Rain's life.
"So...," Xiao started, choosing her words carefully before deciding to speak in Chinese. "About Quinn..."
"Don't start, Xiao."
"Bu-"
Her retort was cut off by Rain's pleading look. This was not a subject that Rain liked to discuss. Xiao knew that Rain's new friends had to know about how her sister behaves and the reasons behind it. If Rain wasn't going to tell them, then she had to. But, it would have to wait until she could get either Quinn or Rachel alone. Preferably Quinn since she lives with Rain.
The following silence was awkward as the two continued to clean. It continued until Xiao couldn't take it anymore and started to sing to herself. It didn't take long for Rain to join in, allowing the awkwardness to fade as song and dance took its place.
This was the sight that greeted Quinn as she made her way into the living room. She stood at the doorway as Xiao started to rap in Chinese, shortly followed by her own roommate. The blonde was always fascinated at the people in her life who were able to rap, like Artie, but hearing it in a different language was just mind-boggling. Such skill deserved applause, and that's exactly what she gave them when the song was over. Both Asians whirled around towards the sound and bowed.
"Hey, girlie," Rain greeted. "About time you got up. Rachel still asleep?"
"Yeah, she is. No doubt she'll complain about her sleep schedule messing up."
"That's what happens on Spring Break." Xiao said. "Anyways, Rain. Can you take out those trash bags?" The youngest of the trio pointed towards the few full bags near the kitchen door.
"Sure. Make me do the heavy lifting."
"Hey, I did most of the cleaning."
"Pssh. Sure you did."
"YAH! Just go!"
"Fine, fine." Rain raised her hands in defeat before looking at Quinn. "I'll be right back." She grabbed the bags and made her way downstairs. Once she was gone, Xiao took the opportunity to grab her sister's roommate and speak with her.
"Ok, now that she's gone, I have to ask you. How much of Rain's past do you know?"
The sudden shift in atmosphere threw Quinn, but she recovered quickly to give an answer. Xiao nodded, hearing her reply. After a quick check to see if Rain was returning, she continued.
"So you know about her parents' accident? Well, then I have a request for you." Quinn just nodded and waited for the other girl to speak. "Just... don't disappear on Rain, ok?"
That left Quinn confused. "Why not?"
Xiao sighed and hoped that she would be able to explain quick enough. "The accident affected my sister more than she lets on. After her mourning period, she was really protective of me. Like, it was almost overbearing. She was the same way to some of her friends too. It was too the point where they couldn't handle it and left her. Rain was just scared of losing the people she cared about. For most of Rain's life, she didn't make that many friends because she was just so scared. Honestly, the first friend she made in ages was Henri."
Quinn just stood in her spot, processing the whole thing. It made sense now, since Rain was always around Quinn ever since they became friends. She could only imagine how hard it was for her to let her go to New York on her own. Before she could say anything though, the sounds of footsteps interrupted them. Quinn just gave Xiao a look of promise before seeing Rain's head pop up from the staircase.
"So, what I miss," she asked as she looked at the duo. Xiao looked nervous and was flustered, but was saved by Quinn's quick wit.
"Just planning for you two to perform for me and Rach before we head back home. That's all."
"What's this about a performance?"
The trio looked up to see a still sleepy, disheveled Rachel walk towards them, rubbing her eye. Xiao let out a disbelieving laugh.
"Wow. It's like you summoned her."
"That's how she is." the Yale students said simultaneously.

After a day of cleaning and relaxation, the group of girls sat around in the living room, chatting aimlessly and recounting the events of the previous night. On the coffee table were plates of leftovers from the party. The adults were still out, leaving the teens on their own.
"I can't believe you sang four songs in a row! And with no signs of stopping!" Xiao exclaimed, amazed at Rachel's stamina while performing.
"Well, sometimes you need to do that on a Broadway stage. It just prepares me for my future." Rachel replied with a flip of her hair. "And besides, the adrenaline is exhilarating."
"Truth." Rain added. "Like when you picked up the slack in that violin trio thing you did back in your sophomore year, Xiao."
"That reminds me..." Rachel leaned in to look at the Song sisters. "What will the two of you be performing for us?"
Quinn just laughed. "Rach, you'll need to give them time to prepare. It's not like they can pull a duet out of their asses."
This caused Rachel to pout, but she understood the importance of being prepared for a performance. It didn't mean that she was happy about waiting though. Sensing the diva's gloom, Xiao piped up with a suggestion.
"Well, we can do a little quick preview of something." Everyone's eyes turned towards the youngest of the quad.
"Oh right," Rain recalled. "We did do that little duet intro before one of my recitals."
Rachel's energy spiked with happiness as she hopped up from the floor and made her way towards the instruments. "Well what are we waiting for then? I'm eager to hear you both play."
With a chuckle, the rest of the group followed the diminutive girl and settled into their spots. Rachel and Quinn sat on a couple of chairs against the wall while Rain made sure that the piano was tuned and Xiao chose which violin to play. Prepared, Rain looked towards her friends with a smile.
"Ready?" Rachel responded with a vigorous nod while Quinn's was more subdue. Rain's gaze turned towards her sister, who nodded her readiness while her hand was poised on the metronome. Rain poised her fingers against the ivory keys and waited to hear the steady ticks.
Tick, tick, tick, tick
The Song siblings counted their measure, making sure that they were on the same beat, before Rain began to play. After several counts, Xiao soon joined in. Both girls were very animated while they played. Xiao's body rose and fell along with the notes she played while Rain's hands flew across the keys. The Lima girls were both very enthralled with both the audio and visuals of the performance. It was obvious that the sisters were natural performers, able to lose themselves into a performance, even if it only lasted for a minute and a half.
Once the last note faded, the two clapped for the sisters, impressed with their skills.
"That was great," Rachel praised. "However..." Everyone looked at the brunette with disbelief. Quinn was sure that Rachel was past her criticism phase of life.
"However... the next time you perform for us, it better be a full length song."
Laughter broke out amongst the group as they nodded their agreement. It seems the sisters had some planning to do.
A/N: Again! Thank you for your patience and kind words. You guys are the reason I picked this up again. I was really tempted to just reboot the story, but since most of you like this already, I figured I'd stick with it.
By the way, the song that Xiao and Rain are performing is this one: /CZDmdDBeWV8?t=18s
Anyway! Read, review, criticize constructively. It's all appreciated!
