Chapter Ten:
Just before we arrived in Paris, news came that the FBI had intercepted an assassination attempt at the White house residence. Details were still forthcoming. I watched anxiously as Rossi texted on his phone.
He looked up and smiled at me.
"Lilly is safe at her maternal grandfather's ranch in Pennsylvania," he said.
"Will I ever hear the full story?" I asked.
"Only that it is has a happy ending," Rossi said.
"Do you think I'll ever see her again?" I asked.
"I think anything is possible for you, Lisa," he said.
"When will my identity get sorted out?" I asked.
Rossi reached and held my hand.
"You're asking a lot of questions that only have complex answers. Everything will work out. You just need to trust that the adults in your life now, know what they're doing."
I merely looked out the window.
"It's okay to be scared Lisa," Rossi said. "Spencer is a good man. He's going to be a great father."
"I have whole new life waiting for me on the ground," I said thoughtfully.
"One that I believe you'll love," Rossi said.
I squeezed his hand tightly. He held mine with equal strength. The future was mine to claim.
…
After our passports were examined, we were directed to a conference room down a long hall. I clung to Rossi's hand as we walked. Never had I been so nervous in my life.
"It's time Lisa," Rossi said. "Ready to meet him in person?"
"Now, or never," I choked out.
He opened the door and I walked in.
The room only had a table to the right side with no chairs. Standing right in front was my father. Emily, my mom, was to the left and there are a man and a woman I don't recognize to the right. He was dressed in a blue sweater vest and white trainers. Upon seeing him in person, I could see there was still hints of a wave in his hair like the one in mine. His expression mirrored mine: anxious but hopeful.
I did what I've been wanting to do my whole life: I ran to him.
He held me in his arms tightly. I heard him sniffle.
"I have dreamed of this day for so long," he said.
"Me too," I said.
I breathed in his scents. I cuddled into his arms. We held on for a long time. I had never felt so happy in my life.
Eventually we let go. He still held my hand as we approached mom.
"Hi," she said nervously.
I let go of his hand and hugged her. She hugs me back more carefully. I can tell she is afraid of being a mom. She doesn't have to worry as I have total faith in her because she makes my father happy.
"Lisa," Reid said. "Would you be interested in being baptized in the church?"
"I have never believed in anything before," I said. "Now that I am here with you, I am prepared to believe in everything."
"Then I'd like to introduce you to Andrew and Rayna Sokov. They rescued me from Siberia and with the team's blessing, they are your godparents."
I looked into the faces of my father's rescuers. They are holding hands and smiling at me. Tears were streaming silently down their faces.
"Hello Lisa," Andrew said. "I risked everything for your father years ago and I would do it again in a heartbeat."
"Thank you," I said.
Rayna approached me.
"Look into the camera in the corner to your left," she said. "Wave."
I waved once and the light on the camera blinked twice.
"That is your Aunt Ally," she said. "Your friend Lilly would like her. She is my sister and a hacker with a global network for getting people out of tight spots. Neither you or your father would be safe if it weren't for her."
I waved again in appreciation of her. The camera light blinked twice again.
Then I noticed my father was silently crying. He looked so happy yet overwhelmed at the same time. He was afraid this day would never come. That I wouldn't find him he wouldn't find me while I was young and not a weapon for some clandestine organization. There might have been a time when I could have been turned against him. But fate intervened. A higher power was looking out for us.
I ran into his arms again. He holds on as if I'll disappear from him. But I won't. I was and always will be, Lisa Diana Reid.
Epilogue
Seven Years Later:
The Los Angeles Olympics
Lilly stroked her horse Spirt before mounting. She isn't as nervous as she should be as one of the youngest members competing in the Olympic Equestrian Team. Jumping has always been her favorite part and now it was her time to shine.
Her father resigned from office six months after an ethics investigation revealed his shady international campaign finance operation. Lilly saw little of it is as her mother settled the family permanently at the ranch after the security breach. She had turned all of her bugs over to FBI with the promise to never interfere with security again. They also had her show them how to build a hacker-proof bug.
She also gave up on supporting her brother in his quest to maintain the appearance of being a genius. Neither admitted to cheating so Lilly was still bored in school, but her brother was happy the pressure was off at their parents merely thought he reached his peak potential.
It took six months for the dust to settle, but Lisa Reid was able to reclaim her original name and become a dual citizen of the United States and France, like her parents. It would be another three months before she and Lisa would reunite. Even with an ocean between them at times, they remained close friends.
Taking a deep breath, Lilly mounted Spirit. She stopped thinking about the past and focused on becoming one with Spirit. Her horse jumped with grace. Nerves could never come between their bond. This was just fun for them. This was where they belonged.
The stadium erupted in applause at the end. They had done their best. Lilly focused her eyes on a group standing not far from her family. Lisa was cheering loudly with her father by her side surrounded by his friends. David Rossi had become a major financial partner since she started riding with the Olympics in her sights. Lisa's family had in some ways adopted her.
Lilly stopped Spirit briefly in front of them. She waved directly at Lisa. She waved back fiercely. Lisa Reid was the reason her world had transformed into something better she could have ever imagined.
THE END
Author's Note:
There isn't much left to say. I like to think that Lilly would be mentored by Garcia and Arnica and become a hacktivist in her own right. Lisa would continue her family's work in reuniting families in some capacity. There will be no other sequels.
I can't believe I completed a sequel! A special thanks to those who read both! I like to believe I have some of the best fans in the CM corner of FF and you always prove it. Thanks again!
Time to work on my many other projects or go crazy and start something new.
