Diana's POV
The underground castle was in an uproar, to say the least. The Three Lords stood behind me, frozen in shock, while Jane, Felix, Alec, Demetri, and Gianna stood next to me, transfixed with fear. I, being the closest to all of the action, was in the worst shock and at a complete loss for words. Just five feet in front of me, where she had been close to death just second ago, Gabby was hugging the leg of the biggest wolf I have ever seen.
Others like it were scattered around the room, cornering the unlucky vampires and some of them were already in the process of destroying some that were dumb enough to attack the monsters. I recognized the Cullens mingling among them and Carlisle and Edward flashed their way to the front. They stopped next to the giant silver wolf, which was nuzzling Gabby with its enormous head.
"Give it up Aro. We're not letting you turn this girl into a vampire." Edward said. Aro was looking uncharacteristically upset. He glared full force at them, his whole body shaking with rage.
"It was never my intention to turn her into one of us." He told them.
"We were going to execute her instead."
The giant silver wolf suddenly snapped its head up and snarled at him. The fur on its back bristled and it stepped protectively over Gabby. The other wolves noticed the sudden hostility of their pack mate and trotted over to see what was the matter. One look at the silver wolf and they were all suddenly growling and snarling as well. It seemed they somehow knew what was going on too.
"It's over now, old friends. Please forget all this so we can all go back to our normal lifestyles." Carlisle tried to reason with them.
"We let it go when we learned that your precious Bella had somehow beaten the odds of Mother Nature and given birth to a half-breed child. How many more times must we ignore such ignorance to our way of life? Do you want us to be discovered?!" Caius snapped, his usually smooth and kept blonde hair was ruffled and hung around his head in an odd way. He looked slightly crazed. Everyone knew about his fear of werewolves and while these monsters may not be the real thing, they certainly were close enough.
"The child is an imprint, a soul mate of a shape shifter named Paul. She is fated to know about our existence and there is nothing any of us can do about it." Carlisle explained. "Just let this go…"
"Exactly why she must be exterminated! She is a child that knows too much and everyone knows that it's impossible to keep such important secrets with a little girl that is practically an infant! She could put our entire existence in jeopardy!"
"Even if she were to tell anyone, who would believe her?" Edward shot back. It was a total standoff. On one side it was the Three Lords and practically the entire Volturi were gathered behind them, ready for battle, while on the opposing side were seven giant wolves and the entire Cullen family, including the demon child herself, hiding in her mother's arms. I glared full force at Bella Swan, the infamous human girl from Forks, Washington. This was completely her fault! If she hadn't been stupid enough to get involved with the Cullen's and if they hadn't let her become involved, the werewolves wouldn't have gotten involved and multiplied so quickly. If the Cullen's had never met Bella, none of them would have even thought twice about saving my sister's life! It's because of her that the wolves found my little Gabriella and it's her fault that we couldn't live a normal life together!
"STOP!" I shrieked. Everyone froze and looked at me. I had finally gone over the edge. I had just about enough of listening to them argue about my little sister.
"STOP THIS RIGHT NOW!!! NONE OF YOU CAN HAVE MY LITTLE SISTER! I AM HER LEGAL GUARDIAN AND SHE IS MY RESPONSIBALITY! THE ONLY WAY EITHER OF YOU CAN TAKE HER IS IF YOU PRY HER FROM THE ARMS OF MY DEAD BODY!" Fast as lightening, I reached forward and tore Gabby out of the giant silver wolf's reach. He reacted instantly and went to bite me but I held Gabby up in front of me. If he wanted to attack me, he would have to attack Gabby too. She started crying and I dragged her to the middle of the room, well away from either party but completely surrounded. I held one of my manicured nails to her throat.
"If any of you move, she dies!" I shouted. No one did, not even anyone from the Volturi's side.
"Please, stop this. We can save you and your sister…" Carlisle tried to plead with me but I was in no mood to listen. That was the last straw.
"NO! All I ever wanted was to live a quiet life with my sister and be happy! But all that's happened in pain and disaster! The only solution is the death of my sister…" I whispered. Every one of the Cullen's gasped in horror and the wolves whined and growled at me. Caius grinned maliciously at me.
"Yes kill the girl! For justice!" He shouted, staring at me expectantly and wearing an unusually happy grin.
"Yes…" I quietly agreed, looking sullen. "I will end her life…and then I will end mine." I said. The smile on his face slowly turned back into his usual frown.
"If that is the only way to serve justice, then that is how it shall be." He said, not sounding the least bit discouraged about my death. I nodded, looking ready to cry even though I knew I couldn't.
"Yes…it is the only way…we can be happy together." Gabby wailed and thrashed in my arms, sobbing her heart out. She was reaching towards the giant silver wolf and he whimpered loudly and took a step forward but one of the Cullen's, Jasper I think, stopped him. He looked like his heart had been shattered into tiny pieces, if that was possible for wolves.
"You may hate me forever and that is okay. But we will meet again in the afterlife and all of our sins will be lifted. God will forgive us. He will forgive you for being tied to such a horrific beast and me for betraying you…" I said to her, now sputtering nonsense as I sobbed dry tears (A/N: If you don't believe in God, that's okay. That's just what she thinks. Not trying to smite anyone's religion here). I looked directly into the silver wolf's, Paul's, eyes.
"I will forgive you for doing this to my sister as well. You can have the honor of killing me." I looked at Gabby.
"I promise you won't feel a thing."
I bent down next to Gabby and released my tight hold on her body and instead grabbed her by the head. I put my head against hers. The silver wolf suddenly lunged but I knew it was too late. He wouldn't make it in time.
I gripped her head tighter and kissed her on the forehead. "Forgive me Gabby."
I broke her neck. The snap was loud, but I made sure it was quick and as painless as possible. Her body went limp in my arms and I slowly set her on the ground, her big brown eyes which used to be so full of life were empty and lifeless. The deed was done. My sister was dead.
The silver wolf didn't waste any time to snap its jaws around my neck and proceed to tear me apart. All I remember was the feeling of my body twisting with pain and an intense rush of heat and then I felt no more. All I saw was black and the faint sound of howling in my head. Painful, hurtful howling, as if the entire world had been plunged in darkness. I did not feel my body hit the floor.
Who am I? Who was I? Was a nice person? Why do I feel so relieved? I heard a faint thudding where my chest used to be and I smiled faintly.
I was dead.
Mystery POV
I watched silently has the whole dramatic scene unfolded before me. I hung back as the werewolves commended their attack on the castle, cornering or destroying any stragglers who weren't fast enough to get out of their way. I watched as the infamous Cullen's argued with the three Volturi leaders. I did nothing to stop the woman from attacking her sister and ultimately destroying herself and the young child. I shook my head in shame. Such a disappointment to see such a young life wasted. I watched as they torched what was left of the woman's body and stayed still until there was nothing left but a pile of ashes. The wolves' forlorn howling was touching. It was as if they had a mind of their own. The silver wolf had howled and cried the loudest but now it was unusually silent as it curled around the dead body of the child. I decided now was the time to make my move.
I walked up to the three lords and they looked at me in surprise. They must have forgotten I was here.
"Mr. Hartmann! Pardon our rudeness. We're sorry you had to witness such ungentlemanly actions of us." Aro said, now composed back to his normal self. I nodded at them.
"Yes, it is a shame. Such a young child too…she would have been a wonderful woman one day." I mused.
"They sacrificed their lives in the name of justice. Better them than one of our own. It had to be done." Caius sniffed, looking as grumpy as usual but a little perkier than usual, if that was possible.
"He will never be the same again…" Marcus whispered quietly, watching the silver wolf nudge the broken body of the little girl. I stared at them for a long time, feeling something odd tugging at my dead heart.
"So what do you say? Will you join us in our ranks? I assure you that this was merely a fluke in our forces. It is unusual that anything like this ever happens, I doubt it will happen again—"
"I'm sorry but I don't think I can help you." I interrupted Aro who was looking expectantly at me. I smiled softly at him. "It seems I'm not quite yet ready to become a part of this organization. The life of a nomad is a little more tempting."
Aro did not look totally upset with this. "That's a shame. Your power is exceptionally rare. Some may even call it God's work. Perhaps in a couple of centuries, you might change your mind. Another time, then?"
I nodded respectfully at him. "Yes, perhaps. Thank you for your time gentlemen."
I walked over towards the Cullen's, who looked as if they had suffered a great loss, which they had. They tensed when I approached them, but made no move to attack.
"What will you do now? Will you attack them out of revenge?" I asked them. The russet haired one glanced at the wolves, which were now all gathered around the body of the girl. Some of them were still whimpering loudly. He held his mate tightly in his arms, while their little girl stared at the wolves curiously but didn't ask. She probably knew now was not the time.
"No. I don't think any of them have the energy too. What is the point in more bloodshed? Two lives have been lost today. I don't think we can afford any more losses." He sighed and his mate kissed him on the cheek.
"I'm sure that silver wolf won't want to live much longer. You mentioned something about the girl being his soul mate. I can't imagine living without my soul mate." I said to the blonde haired one. Their leader. He nodded forlornly, looking centuries old. "I'm not sure there is anything we can do about it."
I continued to stare at the wolf pack. I felt that strange tugging sensation again. "I wouldn't be so sure about that."
They all looked at me in alarm as I turned and started walking into the direction of the wolves. The very short Cullen suddenly gasped and covered her mouth, staring after me in shock. The russet haired one I had spoken to earlier looked at her and then stared at me in shock. Their family looked at them curiously. I half smiled. They must know what I intended to do.
I approached the wolf pack and they all turned and snarled at me. The silver wolf stood up and stood protectively over his fallen soul mate, although I could tell he did it without really trying. I can't imagine how he must be feeling right now. I stopped and put my hands up in defense and to show them that I meant no harm.
"Calm down. I do not wish to harm any of you—including the girl." I said. None of them moved. My eyes flickered to the body of the little girl. She was as still as a vampire; her brown eyes were lifeless and they stared at me…as if waiting expectantly for me to help her. That must be what this tugging feeling is. I glanced at the pile of ashes a few feet away. The spirit of her sister must be forcing me to do this, otherwise I wouldn't have even thought about helping this girl. I wrinkled my nose at the smell that emitted off of the wolves. They absolutely reeked of dog. Yes, this must be the spirit of the young girl's sister.
Suddenly the pixie Cullen flashed next to me, along with her brother and what I supposed was her mate.
"Please! Let him see her! He can help Gabby!" She insisted, even sounding a little commanding.
"Yes! I can save her." If wolves could look suspicious and surprised, these wolves certainly did. They all looked at the giant black wolf, and then the silver one standing over her body. "Please, let me do this before I change my mind and your soul mate will be lost to you forever."
For one agonizing second, none of them moved. Then they all slowly backed away, except the silver wolf. He hesitated for a bit longer before backing a few feet away—watching me closely. I sighed and walked over to the girl's body. I heard Caius' voice from where he had been standing.
"Hartmann—if you're doing what I think you are doing—" He growled.
"It's alright. I know what I'm doing. This will be beneficial for both parties." I bent down next to the little girl's body. If it had not been for the lifeless look in her eyes and the way her head sat at an odd angle and for the ugly looking bruise on her neck, it would have looked like she had fallen asleep. My heart was being tugged more than ever and I gently touched the little girl's forehead. It's so sad…how easy it is for people to forget how fragile a human life really is…
I turned and looked at the wolves and the Cullen's, particularly at the silver wolf.
"I can save her. I have the power to bring her back to life. She will regain all of her memories and it will be as if she had simply fallen asleep. I will save this human child—" All of their faces, including the wolves', lit up—"but I have one condition. I will only save her if you let her go."
The smiles on their faces disappeared.
"What do you mean?" The leader of the Cullen's asked. My blank expression did not change, although I did feel sympathy for these people.
"If you really want me to save this child, then you must promise to let me take her to an orphanage where she will be adopted by a normal human family and raised as such. It is the only way to prevent the Volturi from attacking her and repeating this entire mess. I can only revive a human once. It's the natural law of nature." All of the wolves looked heartbroken, including some of the Cullen's. The russet haired one suddenly looked at the silver wolf.
"Her mate wants to know if she'll remember anything about us." He said.
"It's as I stated before. She will have all of her memories returned to her. All I ask is that you let her go and leave your lives for a short amount of time. If she is truly your soul mate, then this is not the last time you will meet." There was a long silence. Then the silver wolf bent over and licked the child's face affectionately. His serious gaze met mine and he nodded. I nodded, understanding, and touched the child's face again. A blue energy engulfed her tiny body and life seeped back into her eyes. She blinked tiredly, looked at me, and then her big brown eyes scanned the faces of all of the Cullen's and wolves around her. Her brown gaze stopped on the silver wolf, which was looking at her sadly, and she smiled. The wolf's whole demeanor suddenly lit up and they all gazed happily at her—tails wagging, in the wolves' case. Her eyes slowly closed and the sound of her steady breathing told us she was asleep.
She was alive again.
I picked her up gently in my arms and gazed at the wolves around me.
"This is not the last time you will meet, however, unfortunately this is the end for us."
"How can we ever thank you?" The blonde leader asked, looking like a much happier man than before. I just looked at him.
"Don't thank me. Thank the girl's sister. She's the one who told me to do it." I said to him. The last thing I saw was their confused expressions and the angry ones of the Volturi, although none of them made any move to attack me, before I turned and dashed out of the building. This is the last you will ever see of me…I thought to them, knowing at least one of them could hear me.
Later that Day…
The magnificent city of Rome was dazzling with light, despite the fact that it was an ungodly hour of the night. In my arms I held the sleeping form of the human child. She looked so innocent and peaceful. I had no doubt in my mind that it wasn't the last time she would ever see her soul mate. She gave me the feeling that she always had a knack for trouble. My main focus, however, was the tiny house below me, where I discovered a hardworking American father and his beautiful Italian wife lived, patiently waiting for the day they could afford plane tickets and move to America. I knew the wife had been injured at an early stage in her life and was unable to reproduce. This would be the perfect place to raise a child like this one, and it was definitely more reliable than just dumping her in an orphanage. A special child such as herself deserved special treatment.
I hopped down to the sidewalk and silently walked up the front steps of their little brown house. I gently set her on their small porch, wrapping her up in the blanket I had bought in the open marketplace—there were images of wolves decorating it. I glanced at her one last time, this little girl I had done so much for, and then rang the doorbell several times. I turned and disappeared into the night, never to return to that residence again.
No One's POV
The petite wife of Aaron Weber was a very pretty woman, although she did not speak English very well, she knew enough to communicate with her husband and continued to take lessons from him. They had met in a museum—he was there for research on his latest book about different cultures and she was there just for her own amusement—and had been together ever since. She was very devoted to her husband, and he to her, and it was her dream to move to America with him and meet his family. She was particularly excited to meet his favorite niece Angela, whom he never stopped talking about.
Although they did not live in a house anything close to fancy, she was content with living a comfortable life with her lover although she secretly wished that instead of sleeping soundly every night beside him, she wished she could be woken up by the faint crying of their child in the other room. The truth was, she wanted a baby. She knew she couldn't, after that car crash she had been in with her parents. She knew she was lucky to be alive but more than anything she wanted to be a mother. Maybe when they finally moved, she could look into some adoption programs…
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the doorbell ringing several times. Why anyone would be at her door at such a ridiculous time of night, she did not know, but she wrapped herself up in her favorite pink robe and headed towards the door. Aaron Weber, a man with unruly brown hair and glasses that almost always seemed to be crooked on his nose, poked his head out of his Study and looked to see what was going on.
"Belinda, who is it?"
But Belinda did not seem to hear him, for when she opened the door she had not been greeted by a person but a bundle of blankets sitting on her front porch. She was in shock and she gaped down at the tiny girl sleeping beneath her. She had to be no older than four or five and with her short boyish hair and perfect round face, she looked absolutely adorable. She looked all around her quiet neighborhood, looking for anyone who might have looked like they were responsible for this child being on her doorstep.
There was no one in sight.
"Grazie…grazie…!" She whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. She shook her head and wiped her face. She bent down and picked up the little girl in her arms and carried her back into the house. Aaron was waiting for her and he gaped in surprise when she showed him the small child she held in her arms.
"Is that…! Is that…a child?!"
She nodded, tears rolling down her cheeks again. She couldn't help herself. God must have been listening to her thoughts. Maybe she wouldn't have to wait until they left for America after all.
YES! THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN! I hope there wasn't too much confusion. Btw what Belinda was saying was Thank you…thank you. Sorry I don't know how to speak Italian at all. You're probably all thinking: WHY THE HECK WOULD PAUL DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT? Well folks, it was either he let her go or he doesn't get her back at all! I am sooo evil! XD
I'm not going to give you a preview for the last chapter because it would spoil things although I bet you guys can guess what is going to happen anyway. By the way, the random vampire dude's name is Troy Hartmann and he has the ability to bring people to life, although he can only bring a person back to this world once. Sorry if that was totally random of me but I wanted to have a really big twist that just threw everybody off :D!
Thank you all so much for reading and reviewing! The last chapter of The Lost Girl will be up soon! Sniff sniff so sad! T_T
