Vaguely, I was aware of Sherlock calling after me, but the knife was stained with drying blood. I knelt down to inspect it, careful not to touch the object. Strangely enough, the knife was a common kitchen utensil, bloodied at the base near the handle rather than on the tip and outer edge. "Sherlock, come and s–" I never even had time to be suspicious. I had barely turned by head when the heavy net fell on top of me, and drowned in the thick ropes which comprised it. "Ah, there we go. Ah've finally got you in mah hands. We've got some talkin' to do, miss."
His voice was distinctive; few people in Farnham had that American drawl, and I had heard Mr Crowe speak often enough to immediately recognise his flint-like tone. Briefly, I considered screaming, but it would be of little use in the forest. Virginia had most likely already appeared and guided the other two far enough away for my cries to be in vain. "What do you want with me?!" I asked him sharply, although I was fairly certain already what the problem was. He was only protecting his daughter's interests, and I should have admired that, but being personally involved I could find no sympathy for Amyus or his daughter.
From the moment she had turned up in Farnham, she had slowly torn my perfect life to shreds.
When I questioned him, the man simply smiled. "Ah think the conversation had better wait until we get inside. Not another word out of ya, or I'll dump ya in a river somewhere, deep as can be." After that I decided that keeping silent was my best immediate option.
As we walked, myself being carried over Amyus' shoulder, I saw the Crowe cottage approaching. What waited for me inside, and just how far Mr Crowe would go to attempt to figure me out, I did not yet know.
