Chapter 10 – Please
It was Stein… wasn't it? And he was alive, they'd said.
The other room was lightened by cold neon lamps and its walls were tilted in light gray. Stein was on the opposite wall and I could see him completely. It felt like a part of me was dying as I saw him. He still wore the same clothes than before, they were soaked with blood which became brown. His arms were stretched away from him to the left and the right and he hung in his bonds, they were the only thing to hold him up because his body was limp and lifeless. From his body went pipes and cables which went into a hole in the wall. I took a look on the monitor to make sure he was really alive. The curve seemed to be stable so… was he asleep?
"Fortunately, he's in this state since some hours. I really don't want to know what's going on in the mind of this maniac, maybe he already plans to kill us all", the guy in this room commented. It wasn't fair… They should not be allowed to treat Stein like some piece of shit! They didn't even want to help him, did they?! I suppressed all of my feelings because maybe this would be my last chance to meet Stein… if he didn't make it.
"Can… I go inside the room?", I asked cautiously. The guy who was watching the screen until now looked up in disbelief. "Seriously? You want to go a room with someone who is completely out of his mind? Are you crazy? If somethings goes wrong, he could kill you and I am the one who has to clean the mess afterwards." Nope, he will never become my personal favorite employee in the Shibusen. And he just received a lot of bad points. "I won't be inside the room for a long time. I just want to see how he's really doing… because he's my former Meister." … because I love him…
"Sorry, man, I canno-" – "I'll take responsibility!" He stared at me with half-opened mouth, then leaned back in his chair. "So you really want to do this." I nodded. "I couldn't stop you anyway if you really want to do this, right? Ten minutes, not more. And if anyone finds out, I will lose my job. You will have to deal with the consequences." I nodded once again. The employee opened the door to the other room unwillingly. Before I passed through, I turned to that guy again. "Are there any microphones in there?" – "Yes, but they are not switched on." – "Then leave them off. I want to talk in private." With this, I stepped in the room and the door closes automatically behind me.
Rage boiled up inside me. And still, I didn't know whose fault it has been. Did it happen because Stein never told me how strong insanity was inside him? Because they didn't warn us early enough so we could have stopped the mission? Was it because I hadn't been able to save Stein? I stood in front of the man I've known for so many years and still, I hadn't known anything about him.
Maybe he was sensing my presence because the body in the bloodstained clothes started to move. His fingers twitches and he rolled his head until it was in a position to look at me. His usually deep green eyes were dull and milky with a hint of dirty green, without any expression. This terrible grin I had seen during our fight was still there. It was from one ear to the other one, exposing his teeth. It was scary and terrifying but at the same time, it was Stein. "Hello Death Scythe…", more than one voice spoke out of Stein's mouth."Nice to see you alive after all we tried to kill you. Did you enjoy this fun to? We did. But what will follow will be so much more fun. So much mooooooore!" He bobbed his head as if it was confirming something to itself. "khk khkh, it has been so much fun!" All I could do was staring at the grinning figure in front of me. I couldn't believe what the Madness said. I could not believe that Stein was still in there. "Are you scared, Death Scythe?" His dead eyes watched my reactions.
"What do you want?", I asked the Madness.
The only sound I could hear for the next few minutes was the humming of the neon lamps and Steins and mine breathing because the Madness didn't answer at once and left us in silence.
He cocked his head to the other side but never stopped to glance at me. "What if we don't have a reason?" , he asked back as his grin ebbed just a little bit. "Don't tell me you do this without any hidden agenda."
Now the doctor grinned even more. "Death Scythe, you humans are all the same. You, the body we're in, the people who took me prisoner, the Shibusen, everybody, everyone! You all want a reason for everything! But we… we're not like you. We're the Madness. Insanity. Maybe all we want is to spread my message. However, we could living without doing it, too. It would be more fun if everyone was insane. We don't get anything for doing what we do. Maybe a bit hate but never anything, that would help us. Death Scythe, imagine an insane world. A destructive world without sanity, without morals, without social norms, without love. Wouldn't it be fun? To see a whole system going down and nobody could stop it. We're sure it would be fun."
My head was spinning from all the things the Madness said. I'm sure I was shaking as our gazes met and he just looked at me as lifeless as before. And still, he went on talking: "You can't stop us, Death Scythe. Not you, not the others. Because the only way to stop us would be Franken Stein's death. You don't want him dead, do you? You desire his living body. You long for his touch. We know it. Why don't you come … come closer to me, Spirit?" The sudden change of his voice startled me. For a short moment, his eyes weren't milky and dull, his mouth not biased to this grin and he looked like Stein again. However, it was only for a short moment and then, it was the Madness again. "We know you want it, Death Scythe."
It was enough. "I get you out of Stein's body!", I shouted. "I'll do whatever it takes to stop you and I will find a way to save Stein! I get Stein back, I promise you!" I spun around and walked toward the door. I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. "Hey, Death Scythe!", I heard behind me, "Did you know that witches love the smell of Madness?" The door opened and I left the room, but even with the closed-door I could hear the laughing as I slid down on the floor. I had to speak with Shinigami again.
I hope you liked this chapter! Hopefully, the next chapter won't take too long. Have a beautiful day!
