Chapter Ten
Kidnapped
Gibbs rushed to my side while I swung my sword around, testing its weight. "Captain! Is what I hear true? Did you really…"
His voice trailed off as I smirked as though I owned the world.
"That answers it," he said.
I grinned. "It was in our room. I don't know how everyone knows about it… I'm guessing that's Karissa's work, but how she knows I have no idea. All she saw was Sade kissing me on the cheek."
Gibbs gaped at me, and I gave him a smug look and sheathed my sword again. "Come, old friend. There is a battle to be fought. Now could be the final battle between my love and her captor. He will hold power over her no longer." I put a hand on his arm and guided him onto the deck, where Sade was shouting orders at the top of her lungs.
"NO, WE'RE NOT RUNNING AWAY! WHO JUST SUGGESTED THAT? I SHOULD HAVE YOU SHOT!" The sailor who had asked her that, who happened to be part of my crew, gazed at the floor meekly, trying to avert her burning hazel eyes.
Mrs. and Mr. River sat nervously near their daughter, staring at the approaching ship. Sade paused for dramatic effect, then continued.
"GUNNERS, TO YOUR PLACES! FIRE ON COMMAND! No, wait… FIRE AT WILL! AT WILL, GOT IT? THE REST OF YE, STAY UP HERE AND PREPARE TO ATTACK! YES, ATTACK, NOT DEFEND! SEE ME OR CAPTAIN JACK IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS! OR KARISSA! OR GIBBS! NO, HECTOR, NOT YOU! Um… hmm… MOM AND DAD! Um… STAY BELOW DECKS WITH THE GUNNERS! AND DON'T MAKE ME CALL YOU MOM AND DAD ANYMORE! THAT'S AN ORDER! IT RUINED MY WHOLE SPEECH!"
Mrs. and Mr. River rolled their eyes before they joined the rush of gunners hurrying to their places. Sade put her hands on her hips and strutted around a bit, pleased at her speech, though I saw Karissa off to the side rolling her dark brown eyes.
Nettle was pushing through the crowd to get to me, and once I saw this I hurried toward her. "What is it, Nettle?"
She stared at me. "That's the first time you've ever said my real name."
"Huh?"
"It's always 'love' or 'darlin' never 'Nettle.'"
"I think I've sworn off pet names except for one person," I said mysteriously. "What is it?"
"I just have a message for you from Barbossa." She bit her lip, playing with her long black hair. "Um, I don't really understand it, but he said it was important… something about how the golden lion and the cursed sailor were supposed to end their conflict in a storm?"
I drew in a breath. The fact that Sade was the 'Golden Lion' was not known by many outsiders (except Linda, of course). I wasn't surprised Nettle didn't know what it meant.
But I saw Hector's point. There was a storm brewing, certainly, and the ship was coming faster and faster towards us. I sucked in a breath. Gibbs, who knew what it meant, cried out in excitement. Nettle raised an eyebrow.
"Nettle. Tell Captain Sade there's a storm brewing. She'll know what I mean. Believe me, it's for her own good."
Nettle, who would happily do anything for Sade's own good, nodded and hurried off.
"INDIRA! TAKE THE HELM!"
The dark-haired beauty, who was currently wearing close to nothing, hurried up to the wheel. Even from this distance, I noticed Sade roll her eyes in disgust at her crewmate's outfit. I snickered to myself.
The ship was within earshot now. Davy Jones, in all his ugly glory, stood before us, screaming at Sade. "I'm going to chop that pretty little head right off those pale shoulders! As for your soul it will be trapped evermore with me!"
"And Barbossa's soul," whispered Gibbs to me. "So it won't be a total loss."
I glared at him. No one jokes about Sade's life in front of me. He mumbled a 'sorry' and went to take his place among the other fighters.
The young captain herself stood defiantly at the front of her majestic ship and screamed back to him. "Actually, I don't think you will! I think I'll be cutting that slimy head of yours off of those disgusting shoulders!"
Davy sneered. I growled.
"I don't think so, my sweet. Tonight, my pet, it's just you and me!"
"Sorry, squid-head, I'm inclined to correct you yet again! My crew is right behind me, and your crew is right behind you!"
"Darling, you can bet those tough leather boots of yours that I will find some way to get you on your own!"
"I don't disagree with that, Jones. Because it will be I to seek out a confrontation with you!"
By now, the ships were almost touching. The two enemies had been yelling over cannon fire. No major damage had been done to either ship, but it created a loud atmosphere and clouds of cannon-dust.
Sade and Davy seemed to have figured out the whole storm thing on their own. They were yelling like they knew this would be their last fight. If only we had known how wrong they were… it chills my blood to remember the events that occurred on that awful, stormy night…
Sade leaped across the crack between the ships. Her blonde hair streamed behind her, like a golden cloud. Her sword was drawn, and she fought as hard as she could. But Davy seemed pleased.
"Cast off, men! Hurry!" he called.
It was then that we fully realized what had happened.
The Dutchman went as fast as she could in the opposite direction of the Song. Karissa let out an angry yowl and tried to jump to the other ship, but she fell into the ocean instead- the gap was too wide. Indira abandoned the wheel and threw a floatation device overboard for the first mate, but Karissa had no intention of turning back. Instead, she swam after the ship, her clothes weighing her down, and tried to catch up. Of course this was impossible, and she ended up trying to tread water and cry bitterly at the same time.
Nettle and Linda were tripping over themselves to get to the wheel and adjust the sails, taking turns looking out of a rusty telescope. Meanwhile, Barbossa was panicking. He, too, had been born on Friday the thirteenth- if they killed Sade, then when he died, he would be forced to work for Davy as well. Gibbs was trying to calm him down, but without success.
I had been standing there the whole time, sword drawn, too stunned to do anything. Nobody was paying any attention to me. Karissa had managed to swim back to the ship through her tears, and Indira helped her back onboard. It was then that someone finally spoke to me.
Karissa marched over, dripping wet, tears flooding her bloodshot eyes. "I'm captain now, since I'm the first mate," she said weakly. This was not the Karissa I knew. The Karissa I knew would say this boldly and proudly. Weak was foreign to Karissa Norman.
But this Karissa looked lost, like a little puppy that had wandered too far from its mother. Her tears added to the rain dripping off the deck. She seemed to be pleading for something as she stared up at me.
Finally she collapsed in my arms, sobbing. "Sade's gone!" she choked out. "Sade River is gone! You're her boyfriend, Jack! DO something! Help me!"
And she cried into my shoulder for a while. I'm not very good at comforting girls, despite what I may say, but Karissa was truly heartbroken.
"Karissa," I said, in the most soothing voice I could manage. "Everything's going to be okay." But I could feel tears threatening to spill over in my eyes, too. My beautiful feminist was gone. She was kidnapped. And there was nothing in my power I could possibly do except sit and hope the Song matched the Dutchman for speed.
I called Gibbs over and had him lead Karissa to the captain's cabin- that's where she would be staying from now on- and I hurried over to where Nettle and Linda were furiously trying to catch up.
"Jack!" Nettle grabbed my arm forcefully. "Orders, Captain?"
"Yes. Keep doing what you're doing, the both of ye. Good job." I patted Nettle on the shoulder and turned to Linda. "You know more than the rest of us put together about Davy Jones because of your research. Is there anything you think he'll do to her besides kill her, or do you think he's just going to sacrifice her?"
Linda paused to think. "Well, it's possible he'll torture her."
Nettle gave a little squeak and buried herself in my shoulder, which was still damp from Karissa's tears. Do all girls do that?
"Or he'll maroon her so she'll die of natural causes- not very likely."
I thought back to the time when Sade and I had fallen overboard in a storm and our Spanish guitar had washed up on the island that had saved us.
"Maybe he'll starve her to death. Maybe they'll have some fun with her before they kill her."
"Fun?" asked Nettle, taking her head off my shoulder.
"You know what I mean. Davy fancies Sade's looks."
"How do you know?" Nettle and I asked her at the same time.
"I know everything, remember?" she gave us a sad smile before taking the wheel.
"Just when you kissed her, too," Nettle said to me, burying her head in my shoulder again.
I waved my hands around frantically. "Okay! Woah! Time-out! How on Earth does everyone know about that! This is so weird!
No one answered.
"So am I just supposed to assume you all are stalkers?"
"No. You're supposed to assume Karissa told us," Nettle answered, taking her head off my shoulder (which was soaking wet by now, from all the tears) and then staring out to sea where Davy's ship had disappeared.
Linda looked me in the eyes. "You had better comfort Karissa, Jack. She'll be wanting to tell everyone who the first mate is going to be while Sade's gone."
"You mean we could get her back?" I asked hopefully.
Linda took a minute to allow herself an amused expression. "Jack Sparrow, I do believe this is the only time I've ever seen you display emotion. Yes, if he tortures her long enough, and we get there in time, we could get her, launch an attack on Jones, and it'll all be over."
"Alright." Before I left I paused to look at the two of them. Nettle had gone over to stand by Linda, and they were both looking at me with tired and defeated eyes. It was obvious the two were starting to form a strong friendship, and I knew for a fact that friendships created under dire conditions on the seven seas would always be strong and held firmly. I gave them a smile before I left. Not a smirk, not a sneer- a genuine smile.
I found Karissa lying on Sade's bed staring up at the ceiling.
"Nettle," she said when I entered.
"What?"
"Nettle. I want her to be my first mate."
"She'll be happy, I'm sure." I sat on my cot.
"If Sade had stayed, would you marry her?"
I jumped, startled by the question. "I don't know. It's a little early, don't you think?"
"Maybe. You know, you two always did fight like an old married couple."
"How many old married couples draw their swords at each other?"
"Good point."
We stayed silent for a while.
"We should calm down the crew," Karissa finally said, sitting up. "Oh, I have a terrible headache."
I handed her a bottle of rum.
She glared at me. "You know I never touch this stuff."
"Come on, Karissa. Just a sip," I urged. "It's used for medicinal purposes, you know. And it cures headaches wonderfully. And heartbreaks. I got drunk one time because of Sade."
She sniffed it suspiciously. "Well…"
Then she tore off the cork with her teeth and spat it onto the floor, like Barbossa always does. She raised the bottle to her lips hesitantly and took a sip.
She blinked at me, then swallowed it. "This is good."
"Just drink enough to get rid of that headache," I advised her. "You don't want to go in front of the crew drunk."
"You're right. I certainly don't." Karissa calmly took another sip, then another, then another. After she drank about a fourth of the bottle she raised a hand to her head. "It's gone. And I'm sober."
She glanced up at me and handed me the bottle. I set it on Sade's desk.
"Sade, we're going to find you," Karissa told the window right by Sade's bed.
I raised my eyebrows. "You sure you're sober, mate?"
She glared at me. "I wasn't talking to the window, I'm talking to my captain who is beyond the window!"
"Whoever you're talking to, they don't seem to be replying," I observed.
She rolled her eyes. "Just because you're dating Sade now doesn't mean you're not annoying all of a sudden."
"I know." I stood up and held open the door for her. "Shall we address the crew?"
Karissa took a deep breath and rose to exit. "We shall."
