Mystery went to her old apartment once again to get picked up for her month working at SHIELD. It's been three months since she started working for SHIELD (And Stark Industries), she was beginning to worry, she knew that either Fury or her parents would find out what she was doing. But that nervous feeling didn't stop her from getting in the SHIELD car when it arrived.
Once again it was Barton who picked her up.
"Hey MC, you know I'm picking you up from now on, apparently I'm your babysitter to make sure you don't step out of line." Clint says when she gets in the car. He then starts driving them both to the hub.
"You know you're going to have to explain why you call me MC and you can't tell them who I am." Mystery says exasperatedly.
"Yeah I've been thinking about it, and I'm torn between it being Mystery Carrier or murder-some creep. What do you think?" he asked jokingly.
"I think you're an idiot if you think people will believe that." She responded. When they arrived at the SHIELD base they went directly to Fury's office, when they walk in they notice Natasha sitting there already.
"Mystery, welcome back." Fury says to her and nods at Barton to take a seat.
"Patches." She greeted while also sitting down. He glared at her, she smirked, he rolled his eyes.
"Anyway you have an assignment for us." Natasha said to get on topic.
"Yes, two of you will be going undercover to get information, the third person will be running back end." He explained.
"Which two are going undercover?" Mystery asked for once being serious.
"That's up to the three of you. Who do you think is the best at getting information that a person may not particularly want to share?" Fury asks. Barton and Mystery looked at each other for a moment having a silent conversation before making a decision.
"I think Mystery and I should go." Barton states and Mystery nods in agreement. "That ok with you Nat?" Barton asks and the two of them have a silent conversation.
"Alright, Mystery and Barton go in, I'll run back end." Romanoff agrees surprising Fury.
"Well, alright then, here are your covers." Fury says handing them over to Mystery and Agent Barton.
"Alright MC, let's go!" Barton says, Mystery rolls her eyes but follows him out.
"MC?" Fury asks Romanoff.
"Mrs Classified." Natasha lies and Fury looks confused. "It's a long and stupid story sir and I guarantee you don't want to know." Romanoff explains vaguely.
"I'll take your word for it, dismissed." Fury replied, Romanoff nodded and left the room.
As the three of them made their way to the quin-jets Natasha asked a question.
"So why does Mystery need to go on this mission?" She asked.
"That Natasha, is a Mystery." Clint responded, then Mystery's phone went off. She looked down and saw it was her dad calling.
"Excuse me, I have to take this." She said before walking away a few metres. "Hey dad." She said when she answered it.
"Hey Claira, just thought I'd check up on my twenty one year old daughter! I'm sorry it's been months since we talked." He said.
"Dad it's fine don't worry, I have to go though, so we'll talk later. Bye." She said before hanging up and walking back to the other two.
"Who was that?" Barton asked.
"My mother." She lied. The plane ride was pretty silent but Romanoff kept looking at her strangely. They touched down and got out of the quin-jet before heading to the hotel they will be staying at. As the three read the files that Fury had given them it became clear that one, they were in Germany and two, Fury thinks that the red skull from WWII may still be around. They have to get information from Daniel Whitehall who Fury thinks may have a connection to Red Skull. They had all been silent for about fifteen minutes when Natasha suddenly spoke.
"So since the coms are off answer honestly," She began making Mystery nervous that this was about her father, "You used the last name May when you were lying to Stark, was that because it's your mother's last name?" She asked.
"Really Natasha? You want to play the game of guess who Claira's mother is now?" Mystery asked disbelievingly. Actually that's a lie she could totally believe it as it is exactly like Natasha to have such bad timing when questioning someone about something.
"Well if you think logically, Audrey hadn't been around long enough and while we weren't with SHIELD at the time, you father and Melinda May were married about fifteen years ago, don't know why they got divorced but they had been married seven years before that." Natasha continued, "So it would make sense, unless your father cheated on Linda which I highly doubt." She finished.
"Audrey didn't date my dad they weren't together." Mystery said irately, "Sorry it just annoys me, she is his sister, she's my Aunty Audrey! He was trying to keep her hidden from SHIELD, then she moved to New York so they saw each other more often, when Garrett got suspicious he lied and said she was his girlfriend when at the time he was actually dating my mum. They'd been back together for a month." Mystery told them, 'Well if I wasn't dead already I certainly am now.' She thought to herself, 'Dad will KILL me!'
"Why didn't they say anything?" Clint asked.
"Because they had good reasons for getting divorced in the first place, they didn't want to tell anyone until they were sure that wouldn't cause issues, that they'd stay together." Mystery answered.
"Why wouldn't Mel tell us after, well you know." Clint said not wanting to say what he was thinking.
"After he died?" Mystery asked a little forcefully, Clint nodded. "Because they had wanted to be sure they would stay together and they didn't, Mom blamed herself for that because she wasn't there to back him up like the partners they were supposed to be, she didn't want to admit that she hadn't just failed her old partner but the man she was still in love with." She explained forcing herself to stay calm. "So in answer to your question yes Melinda May is my mother, but you can not under any circumstances tell her I work for SHIELD or Stark!"
"Alright now back to the mission here's the plan!" Clint told them before filling them in on the plan he had been coming up with them, they agreed and finished the mission in record timing, luckily it appeared that the Red Skull had actually died on the plane.
Omg, I am sooooooooo sorry I haven't updated in AGES! I had like the worst case of writers block for this story! Anyway from here on out it is my SOLE focus story, it WILL be completed by the end of next month I promise!
