Chapter 10:
Dad?
The next day I woke up to being jumped on by a Pegasus filly wearing a silly grin on her face.
"Come on! I wanna go make some friends!" Silver said as I slowly sat up.
"That probably won't be too hard for you" I muttered as I gazed upon the little filly who was bouncing up and down in excitement.
"Actually, Spike can go with you and introduce you to the Cutie Mark Crusaders" Twilight said as she entered the room.
"Who?" Silver and I asked at the same time.
"That's what Scootaloo, Sweetie Bell, and Apple Bloom refer to themselves as. It's the name of their little club" Twilight explained.
"Cool! I can't wait to play with them and figure out our cutie marks together and do fun stuff together! Let's go!" Silver said and she started pushing me slowly out the door.
Twilight giggled as the little filly attempted to get me through the still closed door. I was about to point this out to Silver but suddenly she stopped pushing me and backed up while clutching her head.
"Silver, you okay?" I asked.
"I...I dunno. All I know is that I thought I heard something, and it was really loud" she replied.
I glanced over at Twilight and she gave me the 'I've never seen this before' look accompanied with a shrug of doubtfulness.
"Do you want to go lay down?" I asked in concern.
"No, I'm fine now. Besides, I can't stay here! I have new friends to meet!" She said excitedly as she quickly opened the door and ran outside.
"She'll fit in quite nicely" Twilight said with a grin.
"More than likely" I said as I followed the little filly outside.
"Where do I find them?" Silver asked excitedly.
"Hmmm...Well they're Applejack and Rarity's little sisters, so they'll probably be out in Sweet Apple Acres where there's plenty of room to play" I said thoughtfully.
"Yay! Let's go!" She said as she ran down the road.
She stopped a few houses down the road and walked back to me and asked, "Where's Sweet Apple Acres"
I laughed and replied, "Follow me Silver. I'll show you how to get there" and we started walking down the road in the opposite direction Silver had run.
After a ten minute walk, we arrived at the Apple family orchard but we saw no sign of any fillies. I saw Applejack in the distance and decided I would ask her.
"Hey AJ, what's up?" I asked as we approached the orange mare.
"Just apple bucking. Anything I can help ya' with?" She asked.
"As a matter of fact, there is. This is Silver" I said putting my hoof on Silver's shoulder.
"Howdy, nice ta' meet ya' Silver. I suppose you'd like to meet ma' little sis?" Applejack asked.
"Yes please!" Silver exclaimed.
"Right this way!" Applejack said as she walked into the orchard.
We followed Applejack until we reached a small tree house that was complete with a picnic table outside and it even had shutters on the windows.
"Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo! There's somepony out here ya'll should meet!" AJ called.
Almost immediately three fillies zipped out of the clubhouse and were introducing themselves to Silver.
"Hi! I'm Apple Bloom" said a yellow filly with a red mane and tail.
"I'm Sweetie Bell, nice to meet you!" said a white Unicorn filly with a curly purple and pink mane and tail.
"And I'm Scootaloo!" exclaimed an orange Pegasus filly with a purple mane and tail.
"Hi, I'm Silver" Silver said shyly.
"Cool name! Are you related to Mr. Black Sword?" Apple Bloom asked.
"I took her in, so the answer is as good as yes" I said and Silver smiled up at me.
"Cool. We're The Cutie Mark Crusaders. We're on an adventure to get our cutie marks!" Scootaloo said.
"You wanna be part of the club?" Sweetie Belle asked.
"Yes!" Silver replied excitedly.
"Come inside and we'll get you a cape!" Apple Bloom said and the crusaders ran inside.
"By dad, see you later!" Silver called as she ran inside the clubhouse.
"Did she just call ya' daddy?" Applejack asked.
"Yeah, but I don't mind" I said with a smile.
"Look at ya'! You've only been around for a short time and you've got everything anypony could want!" Applejack said.
"What do you mean?" I asked her as we began walking towards town.
"You've got a job that any guard would want, you've got a nice mare who likes you and she's a princess no less, and you've got a start on a family already" Applejack said.
I thought about that for a few moments while we continued to walk. I hadn't really put much thought into what was going on in my life in the short time I've been in Equestria.
"I guess you're right AJ" I said.
"Yes sir, you've got a good thing goin!" she exclaimed.
"Well thanks for bringing that to my attention Applejack. Actually, I was wondering if you could help me with something" I explained.
"Sure thing, what do ya' need?" Applejack asked.
"Well, if I'm going to have Silver around, I need an actual house. That and it would be nice to have one" I said sincerely.
"Ah see what ya' mean. Where you gonna buy one?" Applejack asked.
"Well, I was actually going to build one out in the open somewhere between town and the forest, and I was wondering if you and your brother could help. I can even pay" I said.
"Well I'd be more than glad to help Black Sword, but there's no need ta' pay us. We help out our friends when they need it" she said proudly.
"No, I insist that I pay. I'm taking your time away from your farm and that deserves payment. Besides, I make plenty of money" I told her as I took out a large bag of bits.
"Are ya' sure? 'Cause we don't really need money" Applejack said.
"I insist" I stated.
"Alright pardner, when do ya' want us over?" She asked.
"Whenever you want to come help. But I can't start until tomorrow anyway. I have to go get a permit and buy the land first" I said.
"Well, you'll be needin' ta' see the mayor then" Applejack said.
"Yeah, I'm actually going there now" I said.
"Well we'll see ya' later Fiery, I hafta go switch with my brother" Applejack said as she walked towards the apple stand where Big Mac was selling apples.
"See you later" I called as I headed into the town hall.
I walked down a hallway and followed the signs on the walls that said where to go and eventually I found the mayor's office. I knocked politely and heard a voice say "Come in".
I walked in and found myself staring at a brown mare wearing a white collar and a green tie along with a set of half-moon spectacles.
"How can I help you?" the mare asked.
"Yes. I need a building permit as well as a small amount of land out between town and the forest" I said.
"I see. The land will cost about two hundred bits. Do yo have enough money?" The mayor asked.
"I believe so" I said as I pulled out my bits bag and counted out two hundred bits.
I placed the bits on her desk and she pulled out a form and began filling it out.
"Your name is Black Sword, correct?" The mayor asked.
"Yes it is. Why?" I asked.
"Well, I had to make sure I was writing the right name. Also, I'd like to welcome you to PonyVille, Mr. Sword" she said.
"Thank you, Mayor" I replied.
"Well, here you go. The deed to the land and building permit. Just out of curiosity, why out there? There isn't much out there except Sweet Apple Acres and Fluttershy's cottage" the mayor said.
"I like a little piece and quiet" I replied and received a questioning look from the mayor.
"It's true. Even rock stars need a little piece and quiet you know" I said.
"I'm sure it is. Have a nice day Mr. Sword" the mayor said as I stood up to leave.
"Thanks, and you can call me Fiery, all my friends do" I said as I left the room.
"Okay, so I'm going to need lots of building materials. Some wood, some windows, maybe some bricks too" I said to myself as I walked down the road.
"Well that's a little too convenient" I said as I saw a building material store.
I walked up to the store and opened the door and heard a bell chime in the back along with a voice calling "Be there in one moment!".
I waited about two minutes before a brown pony with a hammer cutie mark came out of the back room and stood behind the counter.
"Sorry for the wait, just hired a new stock boy. Had to tell him how to organize some materials" the pony said.
"No problem. I don't have anywhere to be anytime soon" I replied.
"So what can I do for you?" the pony asked.
"Well, I'm going to need a lot of supplies. I'm building a house out in the fields and will need quite a few supplies" I said.
"Eeyup. I can list off what you'll need if you like" the pony said.
"That'd be a big help. Just don't tell me how much they'll cost until you list everything" I said and the pony laughed.
"A lot of my customers say that. Okay, so you'll need concrete for a foundation, and I suggest you make a full size basement. You'll need either bricks or wood for the walls, bricks for a chimney, and some sort of windows I assume. And of course you'll probably want electricity, so you'll need some wiring" the pony listed off.
"Ugh, how much is all that gonna cost?" I asked.
"It'll only cost you about ninety five thousand bits" the pony said.
"Really? That seems a bit cheaper than I thought" I said suspiciously.
"Yeah, but you're Captain of the Royal Guard, an awesome singer, and you have pretty darn nice skills with a sword, so I'm giving you a twenty five thousand bit discount" the pony said.
"Wow, that's extremely generous. Are you sure?" I asked.
"Yeah I'm sure. Just tell everypony where you got you're supplies from" the pony requested.
"I'll make sure to" I said as I shook his hoof.
"You want to pay now or pay over time?" He asked.
"I can pay about a third of that off now" I said as I handed him a pile of bits.
"Okay that's thirty thousand right there, so you still owe another sixty five thousand" he said as he wrote some stuff down on a note pad.
"I just need your name and place of delivery" the pony said as he hooved me a pencil and the note pad.
I wrote down the information and handed the stuff back to him.
"Thank you and have a nice day" the pony said.
"I will, and I hope you have a nice day too" I replied.
"I already have, I met you didn't I?" He said and I walked out laughing.
I walked down the road looking for something else to do. I couldn't think of anything and I ended up pulling out the deed to the land I had bought from the mayor.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, she gave me how much land?" I asked astounded as I read the paper.
I reread the paper several times. She had sold me twenty five acres of land! Holy cow! I might have to sell some or something.
"Hey Fiery, what are you reading?" Twilight asked as she trotted up to me.
I showed her the deed and she gaped when she was done reading it over.
"The mayor gave you all twenty five acres of the fields? How much did you pay?" Twilight asked.
"Not that much" I replied.
"Wow, you could do a lot of things with that land" Twilight marveled.
"One thing at a time. I have to build my house first" I said.
"You're building a house? That's great!" Twilight exclaimed.
"Yeah, now I won't be in the way at the library" I said.
"You're not in the way" Twilight said.
"I know, but I don't want to feel like a burden" I informed her.
"You're not a burden. You've been in Equestria for not even a week and you already want to live alone?" Twilight asked.
"I won't be alone. Silver will be there too" I said.
"Oh, right. I forgot about her" Twilight said quietly.
"Is something wrong?" I asked her.
"Well, I thought that you and I...were...maybe..."
"That we were a couple?" I finished and she nodded.
"I never said we weren't, but I also never said we were, Twilight. Were friends for sure, but I don't know if we're anything farther along yet" I explained.
"Okay, I understand. But I thought that maybe after everything that's happened...".
"Nothing has really happened Twilight. Yeah, I stopped some zombies and some strange mares, but other than that we haven't really even been in each other's company" I said.
"Well, we can fix that. I could travel with you, and maybe get a job, and pbth..." She said before I put my hoof to her mouth.
"Twilight. You're the Princess of Magic. You can't just follow me. How would I feel if you got hurt or injured badly?" I asked.
"I could protect myself easily! And if not I could heal my wounds!" Twilight said indignantly.
"You can't bring yourself back from the dead though" I said quietly.
"No, you're right. I'm sorry for even bringing this up" Twilight said as she turned to leave.
I put a hoof on her shoulder and said, "I know that you like me, but don't forget that I'm not even really a pony".
"But what about what you said a few days ago! What about the 'You should be with whoever you want'? Was that all a lie?" Twilight asked.
"No it wasn't any kind of lie. You are a very beautiful pony, Twilight. I'm just not sure if I'm ready for that kind of relationship though" I said.
Twilight went to say something else but before she could a grey Pegasus crashed into the ground between us.
"You okay?" I asked the Pegasus.
"I'm fine! Just forgot to stick out my hooves" she said.
I looked at her and saw that she had grey fur and a blonde mane and tail. Her cutie mark was...bubbles? Weird. And when I looked at her eyes I noticed they seemed to go in opposite directions occasionally.
"Is there anything we can help you with Derpy?" Twilight asked.
"Yeah! I got I letter for Black Sword from Princess Celestia" she said as she pulled an envelope out of her mail bag that I hadn't noticed earlier.
"Here you go! Enjoy" she said as she hooved me the letter.
I opened it and read it quickly. After rereading it a couple of times I sighed and put it in my bag.
"Is something wrong mister? Do you want a muffin? I make really good muffins and I'm sure it'll cheer you up" Derpy said.
"Uhhh...sure?"
"You want a chocolate chip, blueberry, or banana nut muffin?" She asked as she reached into her bag.
"Uhhh...I guess I'd like a chocolate chip muffin?" I replied.
"Here you go! I hope you like it!" Derpy said as she handed me the muffin and flew off towards some more ponies.
I took a bite of the muffin and found it was extremely delicious. I swear if there was anypony else who could make muffins like this I would have to hire them as a personal chef!
"Wow, this is a darn good muffin" I said.
Twilight smiled slightly and said, "Her muffins are quite good, but what did the letter say?"
"There's some sort of event coming up soon and Celestia wants me to help oversee the preparations. They have to prepare this thing all week long too! Ugh, I'm going to be bored out of my mind" I said.
"It's not so bad. I remember when she used to have me do that and we once had quite a problem with a cat and a mouse running through the kitchen.
"Almost like Tom and Jerry" I muttered.
"Who's Tom and Jerry?" Twilight asked.
"Something that is very funny where I come from but you couldn't possibly understand it" I said with a chuckle.
"So how long are you going to be gone?" Twilight asked.
"From the looks of it she only wants me there for the first couple of days. After that she has a professional coming in from Las Pegas" I said.
"Well, maybe you'll meet some interesting ponies" Twilight said.
"You mean society hags? No thanks, I prefer normal ponies" I said and Twilight let out a giggle.
"What event could they possibly be planning that takes a whole week" I asked.
"Well, The Wedding, The Gala, and My Coronation all took a week of preparation. But honestly, I have no idea what's being planned" Twilight said.
"Joy" I said with a sigh.
"Well, at least you have something to do. I think my brother did WAY more when he was Captain" Twilight said.
"Yeah, and weren't his last days as Captain controlled by Chrysalis and his last day on the job he was possessed while a changeling army attacked the town?" I asked
"Oh be quiet" Twilight said as she shoved me.
"Oh crap! What am I going to do with Silver?" I asked.
"It's okay Fiery, you can leave her with me while you're gone" Twilight said.
"Thanks Twilight. I'm glad I have you around" I said.
"I'm still working at getting closer than around" she muttered.
"I heard that" I stated and she blushed.
Then I heard somepony yell my name and I turned to see four fillies charging towards me"
"And I thought you were bad" I said to Twilight as I was plowed over by the four fillies.
After a minute of tangled limbs and unsticking a hoof out of Apple Bloom's bow (while Twilight giggled the whole time) I was finally able to stand up.
"Was there something you wanted besides the success of knocking me down?" I asked and the fillies giggled.
"No, we were gonna ask if Silver could stay over at my place tonight" Apple Bloom said.
"I don't see why not. Twilight, do you have any objections?" I asked.
"No, but try not to cause any trouble" Twilight said.
"Yay! Cutie Mark Crusaders sleepover!" they yelled.
"Thanks Dad!" Silver said as they took off towards Sweet Apple Acres.
"Did she just call you dad?" Twilight asked.
"Yeah. That's the second time today she's called me dad. But I don't care even if I'm not" I stated.
"So you can handle a kid, but you're not ready for a serious relationship?" Twilight questioned.
"Isn't there a difference?' I asked.
"Yes! Normally the kid comes after a serious relationship!" Twilight said.
"Well, I'm doing things differently I guess" I said with a smile while Twilight glared at me.
"Well, I'm gonna need some sleep if I have to be a…blegh…oversee preparations" I said and Twilight laughed.
"Come on; let's get back to the library. Look at the bright side, you can use a bed tonight instead of the couch" Twilight said.
"I don't know if that makes anything better" I said and she laughed again as we walked back towards the library.
