Crazy, Stupid, Love

After the ceremony, Gai and Lee head outside with the rest.

"Let's go see your mom," Gai instructs. They both search the throng of people. Lee's face lights up as Kurenai spots them. She holds her arms out, smiling brightly. Her boy is a high-schooler now.

"Oh, I'm so proud of you!" She embraces him tightly.

Gai switches his attention to Kakashi and Sakura who are a mere feet away. "Hi, Sakura."

"Hi daddy." He smiles at her, adoring.

"My perfect girl." He kisses her forehead before turning to Kakashi. "So I bought a firearm-a Colt .45 on a shady internet site, I can show you the receipt. If you hurt her, I am prepared to shoot you in the face. Come here."

Kakashi blinks at him. He slowly waddles forward. "Gai, I'm not gonna-"

Gai throws both hands on either side of his face, slapping him. "Shut up, Kakashi."

Kakashi's mouth snaps shut.

"Wow. I like that. This is gonna be fun."

-slap-

Kakashi smiles, and shakes Gai's hand. He supposes this is his payback, not only for slapping him, but for everything in between.

"Is that a new shirt?" Gai comments.

"Sakura took me to the Gap. It's actually not as bad as I thought," he replied, straight-faced.

"Seriously?"

Kakashi cracks at Gai's look. "Of course not, Gai. It's the Gap. I got this at Nordstrom's."

"And like that... order is restored in the universe."

Lee interjects. "I'm gonna go talk with my friends."

Kurenai finally lets go of Lee with a happy sigh. "Go hang with the other high-schoolers. Go ahead, see if I care. I don't care."

Lee approaches Hinata. "I'm really glad you came."

"So am I," she responds honestly.

"You were a really good babysitter, Hinata. Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable."

She cocks an eyebrow. "I thought you weren't giving up."

"I'm not...but I just figure...you like my dad, and in a few years I'll look like him. I'll come for you then." He smiles cheesily.

"It's a good plan." She looks over her shoulder, and reaches into her purse. "Until then...a little graduation gift. To help get you through high school." She hands him an envelope with 'Lee' written on the front with glitter and sparkles. Lee peeks inside. His eyes practically pop out of his head. Hinata bends down and kisses him sweetly on the cheek.

"Take care, Lee." Love-struck once more, Lee watches Hinata walk away. She glances over her shoulder at him one last time before disappearing somewhere in the parking lot.

"He looks pretty happy," Gai says to Kurenai as they both watch their boy.

"Yeah."

"Gosh, I hate that haircut, though."

"Ick, I know. He looks like a sheepdog."

"Mhm."

She turns to him. "You gave a good eighth grade graduation speech."

"I've been working on it for thirty years, so..."

She laughs, then...quiet. "Do you think we can ever come back from all this, Gai?"

"I don't know. I'd like to try though. I know I'd like to try."

She nods, thinking. "Things are just so messed up. And it's been such a strange year. I've been in such a strange place. And we have all these problems, so many problems I've lost count, but at the end of the day, I mean, the only thing I know-" She stops herself, emotional. "I am just so glad you took me for that ice cream."

Gai smiles. They share the moment in silence.

Kurenai smirks. "It was Rocky Road, by the way."

"No!" They joke and argue about what flavor the ice cream was. Lee spots his parents laughing together. He smiles, relieved. He'll never understand this crazy, stupid, love.
