EPOV
I couldn't breathe. Cat was going to be in my school. She would be so close to me. What would happen when she saw me? We hadn't talked in almost a month. The last time I saw her was through her living room window when I went to go see her. Theo turned me away at the door. But this time was different. Theo couldn't forbid me from going to school.
I couldn't help but worry. What would happen when I saw her? Would she finally talk to me, or would she just turn away pretending not to know me? I knew all the guys would follow my lead. I just didn't know what that would be. I was feeling conflicted. On the one hand I was dying to search the halls looking for her. It couldn't be that hard to find her. I mean she was new, in a wheelchair, with several long scars across her body.
Turns out I never had to make the decision whether or not to talk to her. During lunch she came up to me.
"Hi," I said cautiously. She didn't say anything. She just stared at me. I was starting to get nervous. It had been a long time since I last saw her. She had changed a lot.
For one thing, she was out of her wheelchair. Instead she had a large brace wrapped around her waist. It also looked as if she had lost a lot of weight. She was smaller, frailer. She had also cut her long dark brown hair to her shoulders. For another thing, her hair wasn't even brown anymore. She had dyed her hair red. Don't get me wrong. She's going to look beautiful no matter what color she decides to dye her hair; it was just a shock.
"Hey Little Red," Jacob said, "why the color change?"
She flinched; I wanted to kill Jake for being so tactless. "I just felt like a change. One I could control this time, okay?" She said defensively.
"I like it," I murmured. She blushed happily.
"Anyway, can I talk to you Embry?" She refused to meet my eyes.
"Always," I said automatically.
"Can we go somewhere more … private?" Her eyes flickered to the guys.
"Follow me. There are some tables in the library no teenager in their right mind will be at during lunch."
Once we were settled in a round wooden table, I just stared at her. "Can you stop that? People have been staring at me all day," she whispered sadly.
"Oh sure. Are you okay?" I was worried. If anyone hurt her feelings, I'd kill them.
"I wanted to talk to you. I've missed you."
"Really?" I asked. "Sorry. I didn't mean to sound too eager. It's just nice to hear. I've really missed you too."
"You want to know something?" I nodded. "I really did have a good time before. You know before …" She trailed off.
"Yeah, I know. I'm glad you were enjoying yourself. I was too." I decided to take a risk. If she shot me down, she shot me down. I would just want to crawl into a hole and die. "We could always try again, see if we could have a good time again."
She hesitated. "Yes."
"What?" I asked intelligently, sure I'd heard her wrong.
"Yes I will go out with you."
"Great! I'll pick you up. We could go for a drive. La Push does have some really pretty scenery."
"NO!" Cat screamed. She adjusted her voice when she got a death glare from the librarians. "No car rides. You know what? I thought I could do this, but I can't. I'm sorry." With that, the love of my life quickly stood up and basically ran out the door. Leaving me to wonder what the hell happened?
