Chapter 11
(Rapunzel's POV)
Man, his grip is strong. My throat felt like it was burning and my lungs begged for air. I heard Stoick's static voice go through Merida's bracelet and my eyes widened.
Great. A demon.
Hiccup tried to steer Merida behind him.
"No," Merida slurred and clumsily walked up to the demon. "I don't care how good looking you are; I will end you if you touch my best friend again."
Then her hands glowed green and she pushed the demon. The force of her Source jammed us fifty feet away. My head hit the pavement and everything was blurry for a while. Then I realized that the demon's hold on me was loosened and I leapt to my feet. I quickly ran back to an open-mouthed Hiccup and a drunken Merida. Jack was close at my heels and the four of us stood side by side.
The demon immediately recovered and ran after us.
Suddenly, he skidded to a halt and clutched his head. His eyes squeezed shut as his knees hit the cement.
"I will not let you!" He yelled and he opened his eyes. They glowed red then turned into a light hazel brown.
The four of us stood our ground. At least Merida tried to.
She unsteadily walked to the demon and knelt down beside him. Jack, Hiccup and I did nothing to stop her.
She put a hand on his shoulder and said, "I know how you feel. My mommy took my gummy bears away from me too because I was very mean."
Okay she really is drunk.
To my surprise, the demon laughed. He laughed and laughed.
And as he did, a large dog bounded towards us. Hiccup bent town to pet him but never took his green eyes away from the demon who kept laughing until he was wheezing.
Merida just stood there, drunk.
The demon finally stopped and he stood.
Wow.
His deep-set hazel eyes were bright; his jet black hair not too long and not too short. He had a little crook at the bridge of his nose. His lips are full and fit just right on his square chin. He was shirtless and his pale, muscular body shone in the moonlight. His jeans were ripped and he was barefoot. He was probably as tall as Jack.
Oh great; I'm drooling.
Seriously what is it with people and good looks?
Greek-god held up his hands.
"In case you're wondering," he smiled and the cutest dimple on earth popped out of his right cheek. "I'm not exactly a demon."
"Huh?"I cocked my head to the side. "Define, 'Not exactly a demon'?"
He stepped forward and the boys stepped by my side as if they were my bodyguards.
"I am Corwin, son of Katherine the mortal and grandson of Hades, god of the Underworld." He did an exaggerated bow and smiled at us again.
"I know who you are," he said. "The Four Chosen Ones of the Brothers."
Jack spoke, "Okay, you sound like a good guy. If so, then why were you trying to kill us?"
"You forget," Corwin chuckled. "I am the grandson of Hades, who is, if I'm not mistaken, your enemy at this time. My grandpa can take control of me at times. Thanks to my father."
"And that is?" Hiccup asked.
"Nico di Angelo," Corwin replied. "If you guys have read the book series of Percy Jackson, you'll find my father was one of the characters."
"Yeah I've read them," I said. "But I thought it was just fiction."
Suddenly my bracelet vibrated and Stoick's voice was heard.
"Remember when I told you that everything that you saw in movies and books actually existed? Yeah."
My eyes widened and Corwin laughed.
"I guess you could say that the humans are some sort of powerful beings that are able to unconsciously construct an entirely different world by writing books and making movies."
"Wow," Jack said, and then he frowned. "Wait, does that mean the Twilight Saga exists?"
"Yep," Came the reply from Stoick.
Jack and Hiccup groaned.
(Jack's POV)
What a day. Apparently this dude called Corwin is one of the good guys, according to Stoick. He ordered us back (with Corwin. Plus I can't help being annoyed at Rapunzel's stare into that guy) so we did. I raised my staff high and a few seconds later, we were back. I don't know why, but the moment we arrived in our cabin we each retreated into our own room, barely able to keep our eyes open. Corwin slept on the couch.
Morning rolled by and my body felt sore. I groaned as I got out of bed. I was starving and I went to the living room. Corwin was still asleep, and Merida walked in, rubbing her head.
"My head feels like it's going to blow," she muttered. Then suddenly she covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom, emptying her stomach. Rapunzel ran out of her room and hurried to Merida's side, holding her hair.
She looked gorgeous, by the way. Her hair un-brushed and her oversized t shirt hanging to her knees; pajama pants had teddy bear prints on them. I tore my gaze from her to find Corwin also checking her out. I immediately felt a rush of anger pool through me. I clenched my fists at my side and kept my cool.
"Hey Corwin," I said, trying to distract him from Rapunzel. It worked. "What do you know about Hades and Pitch?"
His head snapped up as if I had just reminded him of something. His eyes darkened and he quickly sat up. "We don't have much time," he said as he quickly put on a shirt from the shopping bag that had his name on. Hmm. Maybe they delivered it while we were asleep.
"Girls, get dressed," he said as he passed by the bathroom. Hiccup came out of his room, already dressed in his training suit. I did the same and in a few minutes all of us were at the living room, ready for something we don't even know. Merida still looked terrible, but Corwin said that it was a matter of life and death.
"Tell me what's going on," I growled to him as we quickly walked up the hill to Stoick's house.
"My father has given us three days before all hell breaks loose," he muttered. "Literally."
The moment we got in Stoick's house, the door opened and Stoick stood there, dressed in a suit with two guns strapped to his side.
"We need to get the four of you suited up properly," Stoick said. "Ruffnut, Tuffnut."
The twins emerged from the house carrying something in their hands. Ruffnut held out two suits to Merida and Rapunzel; Tuffnut did the same to me and Hiccup. We each suited up in Stoick's house. The suits were the same as our training suits, only this time it was lighter. Much, much lighter.
Once we've suited up, they handed us our weapons. They attached something in my staff so that when I pressed a button spikes would emerge from each side. Merida took her bow and arrows, Hiccup took his sword, and Rapunzel was given a golden hunting knife.
"From your parents," Ruffnut said.
"But what about our training?" Merida asked.
"There's no time," Tuffnut explained. "You will learn to harness your Sources on the way. But right now, we have three days before the gates to hell will be opened."
As if on cue, a young boy ran up to Stoick.
"Stoick! Ten werewolves are on their way here," he panted. "Coming from the South."
Stoick was immediately alert. "How long?"
"About twenty minutes, sir," The boy replied.
"Gather everyone and set out to the northern kingdom immediately," Stoick's voice boomed. "The six of us will stay."
"But sir-" One of the guards said but Stoick raised his hand.
"We will be dealing with werewolves, Karv," he said. "Not lions."
The guard nodded, trusting his leader. He knew that werewolves were much, much worse than lions and he couldn't risk dying and leaving his family. Karv spoke in his bracelet and in two minutes every house in the village was opened at the roof; some sort of floating cars came up and flew away like lightning. In five minutes the village was empty except for the six of us.
"Corwin," Stoick said. "Are you with me?"
"Of course," Corwin grinned and to my total shock, fangs grew out of his teeth and his body doubled in size. His hands grew talons and his shirt ripped. Red fur sprouted out of him and his feet had sharp claws. Two angry red horns popped of his head and he kept increasing in size.
In a few seconds, a ten-foot-demon stood in front of me.
Stroick never took his eyes off the road facing the south. All the rest stared at Corwin.
"It's a curse," Corwin's voice turned ten times deeper and was more metallic. "It's a long story."
"We have ten minutes," Stoick said. "Everyone get ready."
Hiccup jumped on Toothless and Toothless made a low growl as he sniffed the air.
"They're close," Hiccup reported.
Merida took an arrow out and placed it on her quiver.
Rapunzel held her hunting knife tightly in her right hand.
I held the staff and we all stood, side by side.
"Uh, Stoick?" I asked. "You do realize we might die today, right?"
Stoick voice was serious. "I have faith in you."
Suddenly, I heard the sound of growling. It was so low and menacing it sent shivers down my spine. I heard the padding of the soft earth as they neared. I looked ahead and there, running right towards us, were ten, large, black werewolves. They left a sandstorm of dust behind them as they ran, barked and growled. Their looks were vicious and I saw a look of hunger in their pitch black eyes; a hunger for blood.
