I drag my feet out of the hospital front doors. Every particle in my body is screaming at me to just give up and take a nap on the parking lot. Only a couple more yards. Why did Mr. Davenport have to park so far away from the hospital? That was my 4 chemo treatment. Today the doctor took out my PEG tube, no more tube shoved down my throat into my stomach, thank God. I no longer have to worry about washing or brushing my hair. The last of it has decided to fall out. Finally we are in the car. The second my head hits the seat, I am asleep.
"Chase." Mr. Davenport shakes me awake.
"Yeah." I murmur.
"Time to wake up, we're home." I open my eyes we are parked in the driveway. "I have to go to a meeting in Chicago. Tasha is on at her scrapbooking class and Bree is at a friend's house all weekend. Leo is at his grandmother's this weekend, but Adam is home. So for the next couple hours it's just going to be the two of you, okay?" He asks.
"Fine." I unbuckle my seat belt and open the door. When I try to get out I end up face planting the concrete.
"Chase!" Mr. Davenport yells as he races over to me. He helps me up and then carries me into the house.
"ADAM!" He yells when he walks into the house. Shhhh, why are you so loud? He sets me on the couch.
"What is it?" Adam asks as he walks into the living room. "Whoa Chasey are you okay."
"Peachy." I croak sarcastically.
"What happened to him?" He asks Mr. Davenport.
"It's just the treatments." He explains. "Listen it's just going to be you two for the next couple hours. So I need you to take care of him. Make sure he eats and takes his medicine, got it?"
"Yeah I got it." He says.
"Alright, I have to go." Mr. Davenport says.
"Okay bye." Adam says.
"Chase?"
"Mugh." I groan.
"Alright, I hope you feel better." I can hear the smile in his voice.
What the heck is he smiling about? Soon I am asleep. I don't know how long I have been asleep before a wave, more like a tsunami, of nausea wake me up. I try to stand up but my weak body won't let me. Puke spews out of my mouth onto the carpet.
"Are you okay?" Adam rushes to my side.
"Yeah." I whisper.
Once again my body decides to take a nap without my permission. The next time I wake up I have more energy. I sit up and notice Adam has cleaned up my stomach and is sleeping in the chair across from me. I get up and walk over to the kitchen, for the first time in months I am hungry. I make two sandwiches, one for me the other for Adam.
"Hey you're up." I remark when I walk into the living room.
"Yeah, are you feeling better?" He asks.
"Yeah." I chuckle. "I'm actually hungry."
"Really?"
"Yep, do you want to play a game of cards?" I ask him.
"Sure, how about Solitary?" He suggests.
"Adam Solitary is a one player game." I remind him.
"Oh, how about Dutch Blitz?"
"Okay." We are about half way through our 3 game when Tasha walks in.
"Hey boys." Tasha breaths when she walks into the house.
"Hey." We say back.
"Have you seen Bree?" She asks. "We were supposed to go to the mall together to get some new cloths."
"She's at a friend's this weekend." I remind her.
"Really, she didn't tell me that." That's weird Bree isn't the type of person to ditch anyone for anything.
"She must have forgotten to tell you." Adam suggests.
"Oh well we can just go next weekend." Tasha smiles as she walks out of the room.
"Maybe we should call her." I suggest. I have this bad feeling in my stomach.
"I don't think she would like that."
"Come on, I have this bad feeling." I persist.
"Yeah, me to." Adam mumbles. He whips out his phone and texts Bree.
You forgot about Tasha.
We wait about 10 minutes, but there is no response. Bree is always glued to her phone there is no way she just didn't get the text.
"I'm worried." I voice.
"Me too."
"I'm going to track her with my bionic GPS." It takes a couple seconds, but I eventually I find her.
"Where is she?" Adam asks.
"She's downtown." I gasp. Downtown Mission Creek is a dirty place. Most of the buildings are boarded up and falling down. That's where the gangs and hookers are, no one goes downtown to just hang out.
"That's not good." Adam mumbles.
"No kidding, we have to go find her." I stand up.
"Actually I have to go find her. You are staying here." Adam instructs pushing me back onto the ground.
"She's my sister to." I protest.
"Yeah but you aren't supposed to go on missions."
"This isn't a mission." I remind him. He stares at me and I stare back at him.
"This is a bad idea." Adam says 30 minutes later. We are sitting in the front seats of his car. We are parked in front of the building Bree's bionic chip was sending a single from. This building is boarded up has gang sighs spray painted onto the sides.
"What would Bree be doing in a place like this?" I ask Adam.
"I don't know, but I doubt its having a pillow fight and talking about boys." Adam says as he steps out of the car. I follow him into the building. The second we walk in I am overcome by the smell of smoke and dead rats. In the middle of the room is a group of ratty teenage boys smoking.
"I'm looking for my sister. Her name is Bree Davenport." Adam says.
"What makes you think she's here?" One of the boys says. Adam walks up to the boy and punches him in the face. The boy falls onto the ground unconscious. I pray Adam did not just kill someone. Super strength and a human skull generally don't end well.
"Whoa whoa man." Another guy yells. "We don't want any trouble."
"Then tell me where my sister is." Adam demands raising his fist as if he is about to punch the other guy.
"Listen man I don't know a Bree Davenport, but there is this girl who kind of looks like you. She's in the back." He points to a door.
"She better be back there." He growls. The two of us walk into the back room. Sure enough Bree is there.
"Adam, Chase?" She mumbles. She is lying on the ground.
"Bree what happened?" I demand.
"Same thing that is about to happen to the 2 of you." A gruff voice behind me says. I turn around to be met with a punch to the nose.
"Chase!" Who said that? Another punch and then darkness.
"I told you to take care of him!" A far away voice echoes.
"I did. I just had some complications on the way." Another voice echoes. Why does my head hurt? I slowly open my eyes. I am lying on the couch.
"Chase!" A voice, exclaims, Adam I think. "How are you feeling?"
"What happened?" I ask as I try to steady myself. Mr. Davenport looks at Adam, who looks at Bree who looks down at her feet.
"I was walking to my friend's house when these guys jumped me and brought me to that building. I don't know what they were planning on doing with me. Anyway, later you and Adam found me and one of the guys who jumped me punched you. They tried to knock out Adam, but he took them all out. It was like 7 on 1, but Adam still beat them. It was really cool!" Bree explains loudly.
"Can you not be so loud Bree? My super hearing is glitching." I mutter as I lay back down on the couch.
"Sorry." She mumbles.
"Are you okay?" I ask her.
"Yeah a couple cuts and bruises, but nothing too bad."
"That's good." I whisper and soon I am asleep.
