Chapter 11 The Betrayer

As Kagome and Sango sat in the healing waters of the hot spring, a pair of unfriendly, yet sad eyes kept a close watch on them. They kept themselves well hidden behind the trees and bushes as they kept the air in the surrounding area down wind from the village, and from a certain dog demon.

'Soon now. Soon this hellish life of mine will once and for all be over with and I will be able to be free of Him. I would rather die at the hands of their mates, then by His hand' Thought the concealed person as she quickly gazed at her hand. Squeezing the object tighter, as a pinkish glow started, it was quickly pocketed away as she decided it was now time to put her plan into motion.

**

"Awww...Now this is heaven. My poor legs were about to fall off if Sesshoumaru talked any longer." Sighed Sango as she sunk deeper into the hot water.

"Ohhh yeah..and after all that stress with Sesshoumaru in the beginning, AND then after what Inuyasha did with me...I'm sore from head to toe. But mainly my head hurts, though this heat is making it go slowly away." Kagome sighed, as she too, sunk deep into the water.

"So Kagome...what do you think so far of everything that Sesshoumaru has said? I mean that's a lot to take in.... All this time he was only pretending to be the 'evil brother.' I don't think I'm not going to be able to recover from this shock for sometime I'll tell you. But no matter what Kagome, Miroku and I will always be behind you and Inuyasha."

"Thank you Sango. I really appreciate everything you and Miroku do for us. You two, Shippou and Kiraia are very dear to me. But now I'm starting to get worried. Sesshoumaru had said that Naraku was planning an attack for my half of the jewel. I think it's best if we left as soon as possible back to the Western Lands."

"Hmmm...I agree Kagome. There's just no trusting Naraku what so ever."

"Yes...your right. Lets get out and head back. As soon as Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru get back we'll talk to them about leaving sooner." As the two girls dried off and started to make their way back to the village, little did they know that they were being followed.

***

The two male Dog demons that were suppose to be hunting, were having their own talk. Inuyasha's mind was just having a hard time in absorbing all that new information that his Elder brother had just told him.

'All these damn years...all this time he was only doing what Father asked him to do...he was always there, but not there with me...maybe..' Inuyasha thought to himself as he frowned a bit. He was so in thought over all of Sesshoumaru's words, he didn't notice that he had walked past Sesshoumaru when he stopped. It was only when Sesshoumaru placed his hand onto Inuyasha's shoulder that the younger brother stopped. Looking at his little brother's face, Sesshoumaru saw the one question he already knew was coming.

Smiling a warm smile at Inuyasha, a smile that had Inuyasha momentarily shocked, Sesshoumaru led them over to where there was a fallen log and sat himself down. Inuyasha just stood in front of his Elder brother with his arms crossed over his chest and was about to speak, but Sesshoumaru raised his hand to hush him.

"I know the question that has plagued your mind for years dear brother." Sesshoumaru said in a voice that was not at all himself. It was warm and pleasant to listen to, but at the same time, sad. Not at all like the cold emotionless tone Sesshoumaru had always used in the past. Inuyasha quirked an eyebrow.

"Feh..You think you know me that well huh. All right then, tell me 'dear brother.' What is it the haunts my minds eye?" Inuyasha said in a not so nice manner.

Sesshoumaru's smile faded into a small frown as he spoke.

"You wish to know who your Father was. I'm I not correct?"

Inuyasha was momentarily at a loss for words. He opened and closed his mouth so much that he looked like a fish out of water. Sesshoumaru smirked at how silly his little brother was looking at the moment.

"Just close your mouth and listen to me, but I do not wish for any interruptions till I have finished. Understood." Inuyasha closed his mouth as he nodded his head. Taking a deep breath and letting it go, Inuyasha sat down in front of Sesshoumaru.

"Our Father," He began, "was Demon Lord over the Western Lands for three millenniums before he was killed.... It was past on to him by his Father just as it is now past to you. In the beginning, after he had mated with my Mother and I was born, he began building up stronger bonds with other Dog Clans through friendship and trading, especially with the humans. He knew, through his Fathers teachings, that a strong friendship bond with trustworthy Allies was the key in keeping the Western Lands safe and well protected. Despite the fact that he was Lord, he had always put his family first no matter what. Whenever battle took him away from Mother and I, he would make sure that we were well protected and safe before he left us. He told me once that lands could always be taken back if needed, but lives could not be brought back. It was during a particular tough battle one day that nearly took his life, he instructed his retainer, Myouga, to a specific job. He then pulled out one of his fangs and had Myouga take it to a magical blacksmith he knew of. Sometime later, Myouga returned to our Father carrying with him the two swords that we both now have. Then a millennium ago, battle broke out on our Fathers land. It was like all the other battles, some other demon trying to gain our lands for their territory. But this time was different. As soon as Father had made sure that Mother and I were safely tucked away, he left to defend our lands. Mother and I stayed in our hiding place for two days. Then on the eve of the third day, my Mother grabbed me and told me to run as fast as I could to the escape route and to the other safe house. She yelled to me to run and not look back no matter what. I did as I was told and just as I reached the exit, I heard my Mothers cry to battle and knew then that our safe place had been discovered. That was the last time I saw my Mother.." Sesshoumaru paused here for a moment and took in a deep breath and released it.

"I was just an adolescent when my Mother was killed. After Father buried my Mother he told me it was time that I began my training. I was to be the next Demon Lord after him. But now that I think about it, I didn't really want that title then. But I never voiced it to Father. It was about five hundred years later or so, after the death of my Mother that, while meeting with the neighboring village leader, Father met and fell in love with your Mother who was the village Elders daughter. She was a young maiden of 18, by human standards, but that still didn't stop Father. They courted for sometime before he claimed her as his mate. And a short time later, you were born. It was the day of your birth that Father decided to name you the next heir to the Western Lands. How he knew that I did not wish the position is still beyond me. Instead of being mad though, he asked me what it was that I wanted to be. The answer was simple. I wanted to be the General over the Army. That night he and I stayed up late in to the night just talking. It was then he told me that the following day he would draw up a Will, and in that Will, he said that you are to become the next Demon Lord and I shall be the General over-..." Sesshoumaru was cut off when a screaming echoed through the forest. Jumping to their feet, the two male demons raced back to the village they had just left a short time ago.

**

"SANGO!!!!! NOOOOOOOO..." Screamed Kagome. She was currently down on her knees as Kagora, the Wind demon and helper for Naraku, held Sango alfot in mid air by her neck. Sango had her hands around the Wind demons wrists, by it was no use. Tears were streaming down her cheeks, as the only thought that was in her head, was how much she loved that lectures, pervert monk that was her husband. Kagora raised Sango's now limp body higher into the air as she yelled at Kagome.

"Louder human!!! I want you to yell louder. I want to hear you scream and beg me to release you companion."

Kagome whimpered as she just sat on her knees and looked at her friend who now was past out from the lack of oxygen. Without her weapon, Kagome was helpless to help Sang. But just as she was about to fill her lungs and start her yelling again, she froze and looked just past Kagora's shoulder.

Curious as to what could hold the young miko's attention more then seeing her companion hanging from her hand, the Wind demon turned around. Upon doing so a clawed hand was wrapped around her neck in a blink of an eye and squeezed slightly. Shocked by the sudden movement, Kagora dropped Sango, but she never touched the ground as Inuyasha grabbed her out of the air and now stood holding Sango bridal style behind Kagome. Once he saw that Sango's breathing was back to normal, he laid the still unconscious Sango down next to Kagome and moved himself to now stand in front of the two pregnant females.

Sesshoumaru was growling deep in his throat. Inuyasha joined his Elder brother at his side with his own growl as he saw Kagome's tears still falling and smelt her fear. Those were the two things Inuyasha mostly hated in life, next to Naraku of course. Sesshourmaru, despite that fact that he was growling, pulled the Wind demon closer to his face when he spoke.

"You have caused my little brother's mate distress. I, Sesshoumaru, do not tolerate any harm to any member of my family what so ever." His voice was rough this time as Sesshoumaru continued to growl as he spoke. Kagora struggled some for air, but Sesshoumaru was still far stronger then her.

"Why have you come here? You reek of that vile creature, Naraku." Sesshoumaru loosened his grip on her neck so that she would be able to answer his question.

Closing her eyes as a tear slipped down her cheek, she cleared her throat and spoke in a near whisper.

"I wish to be free. Free of this cursed life I live. I pray that you grant me a small request. Make my death quick." She stuck her hand into her pocket and clutched the item there in as she called out.

"Kagome. Can you tell me what it is that I have in my pocket?"

Inuyasha cocked his head and looked to Kagome. But Sesshoumaru didn't move at all. When he saw Kagome's attention focus on the demon he held in his hand, he waited for an answer before he continued to ask his own.

A small gasp from Kagome had Inuyasha at her side in a heartbeat. Pulling her into his lap, he nuzzled into her neck to try and offer her some comfort. Placing a soft kiss to his cheek, Kagome got up from his lap and moved to stand next to Kagora.

Setting her small hands onto Sesshoumaru's arm, she looked into his golden eyes.

"Sesshoumaru, please set her down." Kagome said in a meek voice. The two Dog demons were a bit perplexed as to why Kagome would have Sesshoumaru release a dangerous demon. But, as Sesshoumaru continued to stare into Kagome's eyes, he slowly set the Wind demon back onto her feet.

"I, Sesshoumaru, do not understand why you would have me release her after what she attempted to do with the Exterminator." Looking to Kagora, Kagome stood herself in between Sessoumaru and the Wind demon.

"How is it possible that you have that, and what is it you want from us. You know we will not give you what Naraku wants."

"I come here only to ask that I be set free from my curse. In exchange, the other half of the Jewel will now be yours and you will have won over Naraku. Please I beg of you, now that I have betrayed Him, he will never stop till he has hunted me down and then killed me. But I don't wish to die by his hands. I know what i have done in the past, and I understand that you can never forgive me, but I am asking you to please grant me my request."

Kagome took a step closer to Kagora and looked at her from head to foot as Inuyasha nervously looked on. Taking a deep breath, Kagome embraced the Wind demon in a gently hug. Stepping back, Kagome spoke.

"You have a good heart still Kagora. And I can understand why you did what you have done in the past. Know that you are forgiven. Being bound to a creature like that by force is not your fault, but I don't think-"

"NO!!! Please. you must grant me my request..he will hunt me down and when he catches me, there is no telling what he would do...please, you must." Kagora sunk to her knees and bowed her head downward. Sesshoumaru looked at Kagora as she then past Kagome the other half of the Jewel that they were so hard in pursuing.

Kagome took off the piece that she wore around her neck and put the two half's together and in a bright flash of light that was gone as quickly as it came, the now whole Shikon no Tama sat in Kagome's hand. With tears streaming down her cheek, Kagome started to walk past Kagora, but was stopped when the Wind demon caught her hand. With pleading eyes, Kagora caught and held Kagome's gaze.

Kneeling down to Kagora, Kagome embraced her again as she whispered into her ear.

"If it were me, I would have chosen as you have. I will pray for your soul." Then, standing up again, Kagome nodded once to Sesshoumaru and walked over to Inuyasha and buried her face into his chest and cried her heart out. Turning away from the scene, Inuyasha grimaced and laid his ears flat when a crack was heard.

True to her request, Sesshoumaru made it a quick death by snapping her neck. Keeping a hold of her neck, he laid her gently to the ground and walked over to his brother and placed a clawed hand on to Kagome's shoulder.

"It is done." He said as he bowed his head.
