"So, have you decided what song you're going to audition with?" Rachel's voice sounded from Kurt's phone. The phone was on speaker so he could speak to her as he ironed a pair of pants.
"Yeah. I finally settled on one," he said. "I think I'm gonna do 'Being Alive' from Company."
"I thought you were leaning away from that one?" Rachel said. "You said it was too generic."
Kurt shrugged. "You said Carmen Tibideaux loves simplicity. She couldn't handle my flare the first time I auditioned."
"I miss you, Kurt."
"I miss you too. How's NYADA? Everything you've ever dreamed of?"
"It's amazing," Rachel said. "It's hard no doubt, and my dance teacher is going to work me to death, but it beats Lima."
Her words poked at Kurt's heart. He wanted to be in New York right that second, and the anticipation of the audition was killing him.
"I know you'll do great," Rachel told him. "You'll be in New York soon, Kurt. I can feel it."
I wish I could feel it as much as you did, Kurt thought, but didn't say out loud.
"How's life at home?" Rachel asked.
"Same as it's always been," Kurt said, and then paused, realizing that life hadn't been the same recently. He figured that if he needed to talk, he could do it with Rachel.
"Actually," Kurt sighed, "um…there's someone."
"Someone?" Rachel asked.
"I sort of met someone."
"Oh my god, really? That's great!"
"Not…in that way. I don't know. I met someone who I really like, and he's my friend, but I don't know how I feel about him."
"Who's the guy we're talking about? How'd you meet him?"
"Well," Kurt said, setting down the iron and sitting on his bed, "it started at the Lima Bean…"
Blaine had no clue what to do.
He stared at his phone for what felt like hours. He had to check his messages every so often to make sure he really had received it: The text from Sebastian.
He didn't understand. Why would Sebastian go months without contacting him and then reappear, texting him casually like nothing was wrong? What could Sebastian possibly want to talk about?
If his suspicions were correct, Sebastian wanted to talk about their relationship, maybe even getting back together. Blaine didn't know how to feel about this. If that was the case, why now? Why wait all these months? And if he wasn't interested in getting back together, what did he want to talk about? It went unsaid, but it was a given that they weren't going to remain friends once Sebastian left for college. It was too painful and too pointless to maintain a friendship when Blaine's heart felt like it had been trampled on.
Blaine wasn't sure how to feel. As soon as he read the text, a million emotions overwhelmed him almost to the point where his brain hurt. Sebastian had been important to him, and of course Blaine missed him. But he wasn't so sure he wanted to talk, let alone get back together with Sebastian if that's what he was getting at. He hadn't been happy, really happy, in a long time, and it was thanks to Sebastian. Would Blaine really let him back into his life so easily? Should he talk to him even if nothing would come out of it, or ignore him forever?
Blaine picked up his phone and read the message again. Though he was clearly taken aback by it, he didn't get that heartwarming sensation he got in high school when Sebastian would end him a text.
Plus, there was Kurt.
Just one more thing to add to the list of things Blaine was unsure of. His feelings for Kurt were complicated. He enjoyed having Kurt as a friend, but something was telling him that there was more to it than just that. He wasn't exactly ready to rush into a relationship, though. He could admit that Kurt was insanely attractive, and he couldn't deny that Kurt's interest in Blaine's songwriting was charming.
He'd never connected so quickly with anyone before like he did with Kurt. It felt natural and easy to talk to Kurt, like listening to an old song that you never really forgot the lyrics to. He knew that if he needed to talk to someone and ask for advice, Kurt would be the person he could go to.
He picked up his phone and dialed Kurt's number. "Hey, Kurt? Would you mind if I stopped by later?"
