Two and a Half Weeks Later

The darkness suddenly disappeared and Olive found herself standing, though it wasn't for long. She fell, landing painfully on her knees. She vomited, trying to keep herself at least propped up on her hands and knees.

There were voices. People were running towards her and she managed to look up. They were blurry, she couldn't see them well but she could tell they were reaching for her. Where was she? Had she gotten away from Loki? Or had he won and these were more of his mind controlled flock?

Someone grabbed her arm and instinct took over. She could feel herself trying to Travel but she fought it as she fought the people grabbing at her, pushing, kicking, punch blindly until they were off of her. Then she ran, stumbled. She had no clue where she was, no clue where she was going, but she had to get out, had to run.

Steve jolted awake, taking a moment to breathe before reaching for the cell phone on his bedside table. It was 3:47 in the morning and Steve had honestly just gotten to bed a little over an hour ago. Needless to say, sleep had been hard to come by lately.

"Hello?" he answered, his voice rough.

"I've got a reading." Tony sounded wide away and as if he were moving fast, rushing.

Steve was instantly awake as well, through the covers off of himself. "Where at?"

"S.H.E.I.L.D infirmary. From the sounds of it, she freaked out, started beating up the doctors."

"She's got to be confused," Steve argued, pulling his leather jacket over his t-shirt, practically jumping into his jeans and shoving on his tennis shoes.

"Either way she's dangerous."

"It's Olive, remember?"

"Last time we saw her, she was under the control of a psychopath."

"I'm going to find her."

"Keep your guard up. Ill be there in ten."

The phone clicked off and Steve rushed out of his room, down the stairs. Olive was back, somewhere in this building. He'd start in the infirmary and figure out what way she went. He had to get to her before she disappeared again, before she could help it.

He stopped in the stair well, thinking for a moment. Olive was scared. She was running and she was lost. In all the times he had Traveled with her, she had brought him to this magnificent places and always at the very top. He had asked her why once and she had given him that smile of hers. "You can see everything up here," she had told him. "Nothing's hidden, everything out there in the open."

Steve sprinted back up the stairs, passing his floor and dashing up to the roof access. He pushed through the door and stopped in the middle of the roof. It was raining, he realized, the drops falling down fast and hard on his head. He cupped his hands over his mouth. "Olive! Olive!"

He dashed to the edge, peering over. He didn't see her, she wasn't sitting on any of the ledges. Steve stepped back towards the middle of the roof. Had she disappeared again? Was he too late?

Steve started back towards the door, when he caught a glimpse out the corner of his eye. She was crouched next to a turbine, arms wrapped around her knees, flickering like a broken TV set and the rain made it even harder to see her. She looked just as she had when he had last seen her though, dressed in the armor but her hair had started to curl up around her face. He pulled out the cell phone and found Tony's number, calling him.

"I just pulled up," Tony was saying through the phone. "Hey you park my car! I don't care that you're not a valet, just park it. You can try to steal it but I will be able to find you and that's not just a threat."

"I found her. It's alright, I've got her."

"Where are you? I'll send the doctors up."

"Give me a minute. I'll handle it."

"You sure?"

"I'll bring her in . . . just let me get her to calm down." Steve hung up the phone, putting it back into his pocket. He started towards Olive, slowly and quietly, as to not startle her. "Olive?"

As he got closer, he could hear her crying and mumbling to herself. "You are my sunshine . . . my only sunshine . . . you make me happy. . . ."

Olive squeezed her arms tighter, sobbing against her knees. Steve kneeled down in front of her, reaching for her. "Olive."

"Don't –" She looked up at him, and he watched her continue to flicker. "Don't."

"Why not?"

"Because – because I'm going to disappear. I'm going to disappear and I'll never come back, not this time."

She melted into tears again but this time, Steve placed his hand on the back of her neck, pressing his forehead to hers. He could feel the shifting of his skin as soon as he touched her. It was an unpleasant and very uncomfortable feeling but he held on tight. "Then I'll come with you."

Olive's eyes met his, frantic and scared. "No . . . No, Steve, you don't –"

"You're not given me much choice here, Liv. You see, you and me, doll? We're inseparable. Just ask anyone. So if you go, I go." And he meant it. Liv had become his best friend and he'd be lying if he said he didn't care about her. He had been devastated to learn that she had Flinched and disappeared and had been relieved when Tony said he'd figure out a way to track her so that they'd know when she came back. Now here she was and he had no intentions of letting her get away again.

Olive shook her head against his, more tears falling from her eyes as she reached up and placed her hand on his wrist, the other hand gripping the front of his shirt. "I don't want to go anywhere."

"Then we'll stay. We'll do whatever you want but first I need you to breathe and calm down? Can you do that?"

She stared at him for a moment before she closed her eyes, nodding and taking deep breaths. Steve gently pressed his fingers into her neck. "Focus on staying solid, on staying here."

Slowly, Steve felt her become solid under his hands, felt his fingers become whole again. They stayed there a moment before he leaned back, looking at her. Her eyes were still closed and she was still breathing slowly, but she was here and she wasn't leaving. Steve pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around her. "I'm going to take you inside now, okay? The doctors are going to want to take a look at you."

Olive's hand tightened on his shirt. "You'll stay with me?"

"Inseparable, remember? I'm not going anywhere." He slid his arms underneath her and lifted her up. The rain continued to pour down on around them and Olive clutched onto him as he headed towards the stairs, into the dryness and safety of the hospital.

Steve awoke to the feeling of hands running through his hair. He let out a soft contented sigh and was rewarded with a soft giggle before turning his head. He followed the wrist up the arm to the shoulder and then to Olive's smiling face. Her curls were piled on top of her head in a messy bun, there were dark circles under her eyes but she looked so pretty laying there. "Hey there, Soldier Boy."

Steve sat up, propping his head on his hands as he gave her a soft sleepy smile. "Hey there, Doll."

"Someone hasn't been sleeping."

"How long were we out?"

"It is now 6:19 p.m."

"Guess we were pretty tired."

"I would imagine."

When he had gotten her into the infirmary, Tony was waiting, having organized for Olive to get her own room. The doctors had tried to kick Steve out but, after some haggling, they allowed him to stand off in the far side of the room after the pulled a curtain closed around her. They examined her, bandaged up a cut on her hand, put her arm in a sling to protect the shoulder Steve had punched and took care of other bruises. The fight she had had with Loki didn't leave her undamaged but the mind control kept her from feeling her fractured ribs. It hadn't helped that Steve had slammed her into a car but luckily the breastplate had protected her from some of the damage. They scanned her head and determined she had a slight concussion. She was dehydrated and malnourished but nothing some fluids when help. It was the loss of her Traveling factor that was still confusing. Tony assumed that the affects of the tesseract had a negative effect on the mutant gene that had been inside her and it broke her powers. She wouldn't be able to Travel, not on purpose anymore but she could still Flinch if she wasn't careful.

Olive didn't seem to be bothered by it though.

"I feel normal for the first time," she said, when Steve brought it up. "Well, as normal as you can be when you work for a secret organization and carry around a sword."

A nurse came in soon after that to help Olive get freshened up so Steve went down to the cafeteria for dinner. When he came back up, Olive was flipping through the TV channels. She grinned at him when he came in before scooting over, patting the bed next to her. Steve hesitated but he kicked off his shoes and climbed into the bed next to her, leaving a bit of space in between them. Not that he didn't want to get closer to her (because he sure did) but he wanted to still be polite.

"So what's the plan now?" Olive asked, still pressing the button on the remote.

"Plan?" Steve responded.

"Yeah, I mean . . . the city's safe for now, there aren't any pending missions. What's the plan? Are you going to stay here at the Base?"

Steve was silent for a moment. "Fury's given me two years off."

Olive let out a soft whistle. "Wow. Talk about leave. What are you going to do?"

"I was thinking of hitting the road, exploring some cities. I did a lot of traveling when the government had me performing but I never really got to see anything."

"You should go! That would be incredible."

Steve rubbed the back of his neck. "I was – I was sort of hoping you would, I don't know, want to go with me, when you feel better and you're up to it."

Olive was quiet for a moment. "You want me to go on a road trip with you?"

"I couldn't pick a better partner."

Olive was, again, quiet. When she finally looked up at Steve, she was confused. "What are we doing?"

"I – don't understand the question."

"Steve," Olive shook her head. "Steve, I'm broken. I'm so broken I don't remember when I was last all put together, but I've been broken a long time. You were right when you said I didn't know how to tell myself what to do. I've spent years letting other people control my actions, tell me what to think. I'm not sure I know how to be myself or who that even is. I have trust issues and I'm anxious half the time and –"

"I'm a little broken too," Steve admitted. "Maybe taking a break from all of this would be a good thing."

Olive nodded, slowly, contemplating. "I'd – I'd like to go but – but can you let me think about it?"

"Of course." Steve leaned back into the pillows and was surprised when Olive leaned her head against his shoulder. Slowly, he raised his arm and let it drape gently around her. She snuggled closer to her and Steve couldn't help but relax slightly.

But still . . . he hoped she'd say yes.
