My Sort Of Brother: Chapter 11: Lost

She had never felt so strange… She had fallen out of her own world and into a new one. In fact, now, from what she could tell, she was just a cloud. A cloud in a line of millions of other clouds. It was as if there was nothing else…

She couldn't remember anything before her world. Except a face… Not really a face but a feeling she got when she saw it.. It was warm and cold at the same time… She was stricken by fear but she felt so safe… It was complex, like the face was two halves of the same coin…

There was no talking in this realm… All the noise was just mumbling and and yelling from winged beasts that looked like… devil things?

As she waited in the long line, a winged beast flew to her and examined her before saying anything. "Bulla Briefs…. You have been requested to join the living once more. Please come with me."

Not that she really had a choice in the matter. Before she knew it, the creature snapped its fingers and they were in front of a huge red beast. He would have looked like a man had you taken away the enormous stature, the lobster red skin and the horns. He sat at a desk, swamped with… paperwork…

"Boss, this gal needs her body back. Someone requests her life back," the smaller demon said as he looked up at the giant man.

The man looked down and groaned. "Ah… I wish they would all just stop coming in like flies! Alright," he grunted as he snapped his fingers and, just like that, she had her body back. She looked down and knitted her eyebrows together.

"What just happened?" she asked as she realized her voice was back. Now that she was back, her sense of fear returned. She was frightened by the sights that was in front of her. She peeled her eyes and withheld a scream. For some reason, something wouldn't let her show her fear.

The smaller demon smiled at her and directed her towards a door. "You got your life and body back Bulla."

She cocked her head and frowned. Why does he keep calling her that? "Who's Bulla mister?"

The demon bit his lip and looked down at the clip board in his hands. "Ooh… I see. Your file says that you… I'll let you find out… King Yemma doesn't like us meddling in the lives of the living. Just go with what's in your heart."

"Huh-" she mustered before she was sent out the door. She couldn't recall what happened next. It was all a blur.

Days since Bulla's arrival: 99 days

Trunks sat with his head in his hands outside a hospital room waiting for a response to come out. He had been sitting in the same place for what seemed like hours, never moving, never taking his mind off anything else. It was difficult for him to not think of the situation going on… The fragile balance of life and death was slowly and painfully deciding which side to lean on.

He could hear doctors running up and down, patients being carried, and the hated flat line of others. The fluorescent lights made the dried streams of tears show on his features… he had stopped crying a while ago.

His trance had been broken by a doctor whose frock had been stained with blood all over his torso. His mask was covering his mouth as spoke but it wasn't muffled. His cap looked a bit out of place and wet due to his sweat.

"Mr. Briefs… I'm sorry… she didn't make it."

Trunks waited for his head to snap awake. The cold reality of it all was… It was happening all over again. This was no dream like the time before. This was his cruel fate. Was he doomed to always be alone? His knees collapsed under his weight and he fell to the floor.

He may have only known her for a minute… but dammit… He is her big brother… Aren't they supposed to care for their siblings as if they were a lamb in a wolf pin? Why couldn't he just been able to take care of her?

His fists clawed at the tiled floor. His screams echoed through the halls. He had a nurse help him up. His cheeks were stained with his fresh bitter tears. His eyes were stinging and a violent red as his veins almost popped. He couldn't control himself. If it weren't for his training, he might have let loose as a super saiyan.

"Can… Can I see her?" he asked, though it was more of a demand than a request. The doctor nodded and took his leave. Trunks held in his tears and sobs in his chest. His steps towards the door were heavy and painful, almost as if he didn't want to see if it was true.

He inhaled before he walked in. On the bed, with all the monitors off, was his baby sister. Someone he had only known for a couple of hours, but someone he could relate too. She lay still and motionless, her blue hair short and her body just a small mound on the bed.

His lip quivered as he contained his tears. He rushed to Bulla's bedside and looked over her frail and empty body. They had cleaned her of most of the blood and left her small face emotionless. His tears finally exploded as he placed his head by her arm and held one of her tiny hands in his callused and adult hands.

"Oh Kami! I- I am so sorry… I never meant for this to happen… Bulla… I am so sorry… Please don't leave me…."

"Hnn…"

Trunks looked up, tear streaks stained on his cheeks and his eyes even redder than before. He couldn't believe what he was seeing…

"Hmmm…."

He gasped as his eyes peeled as he lost his breath. "Bulla?" he choked.

Days since Bulla's disappearance: 21 days

Dead… gone…

"Dead?" Bulma whispered to herself, the air being knocked out of her stomach. Her daughter… was dead? There was almost no time for tears; too many of those have been shed. Bulma could feel her anger and despair bubble up, almost boiling in her being. "What do you mean dead!?" Bulma screamed, her hands clenched into fists. Her eyes were peeled and fire burned in them. She was through with being toyed with by the universe's sick game.

Everyone looked at her in shock that she would dare to speak to Shenron like that, but they all understood, or at least tried to. Vegeta was at a loss for words. His silence frightened everyone; he was a ticking time bomb. Everyone moved a foot away from him.

Shenron roared. He does not like to be awakened to be asked such stupid questions. "The one you call Bulla, is dead. As I have said, I cannot bring the dead in to the world of the living!"

As everyone pondered the thought of Bulla being gone, Gohan thought quick on his feet. "Well, then as our first wish, bring her back to life!"

Everyone looked at the spiky haired nerd and then to the giant dragon in the thunder sky. His eyes glowed red as his aura brightened. "It is done…"

Days Since Bulla's Arrival: 99 days

The small child was alive? How!? How was it possible!? He couldn't believe it! It was a miracle!

"Where am I?" she asked looking around.

Trunks smiled and cried. He couldn't believe it. She was alive! He called out for help to make sure she was fine. "Nurse! Nurse! Come quick!"

Help rushed in and all three nurses stood cross eyes as the person they had just declared dead was sitting up… yawning. They stuttered and all three of the called for the doctor.

Half an Hour later…

Trunks was over joyed and was laughing out of pure happiness. He had been kicked out of the room as soon as the doctors said they wanted to examine her. He was beyond anxious and quickly rushed to the doctor as soon as he walked out the door.

"So… How is she!?" he asked, excited to head back in.

"In all my years of practicing medicine… I have never seen this happen… It's a miracle Mr. Briefs…" the doctor choked, amazed and awed.

Trunks nodded and laughed. "Can I go in!?" he asked.

The doctor moved out of the way and let Trunks go through. Trunks' smile was overwhelmed with his tears; this time for joy. He was by her side in a flash, alarming her. "How is this possible Bulla?" he asked as he hugged her closely. He placed a hand on the back of her tiny head and pushed her body against his chest. He sobbed into her hair. He could feel her tiny fists rest against him.

"Hey! Get off of me you creep!" she yelled. She pushed away from him and scowled, but then it quickly faded as an expressionless face replaced it. She couldn't believe it… The face that she so often recalled. That feeling of fear and sanctuary all at once… It was in front of her. She didn't know whether to cry or laugh…

"It's you…" she whispered to herself…

He sighed and nodded. "Yeah Bulla… It's me…" he smiled as he wiped away a tear from his cheek with his thumb. Her face turned cold again.

"Who's Bulla? And why does everyone keep calling me that?"

Trunks froze. Had… Had she lost her memories? Had death taken away her memories of family and love? And what did she mean by everyone? "You're Bulla..." he said softly as he held her shoulders, "You have to tell me what the last thing you remember is?"

Bulla held her chin and looked at the blanket in her lap quizzically. "Well… I remember a demon telling me that I got my life and body back from this other giant red demon thing…"

"Do you remember anything before that?" he asked, alarmed at the situation.

She shook her head and sighed. She sniffed and looked in to his matching blue crystal eyes. "Who are you?"

He huffed and blew his bangs up with his breath. "Um… I guess you can say I'm your big brother…"

"Oh… Well… What's your name?" she asked as she patted her sides with both hands.

He smiled and ran a hand through his hair. "My name is Trunks… Nice to meet you," he laughed as he extended a hand to shake hers.

She grinned and clasped his hand in between her smaller ones. "Hi Trunks! But wait… If you're my brother… then how come I don't remember you?"

Trunks bit his lip. That was question he himself couldn't even figure out. "I-I don't know… I mean we didn't spend much time together but you would think you would remember me…" he mumbled.

"Huh?" she asked, not hearing his low conversation with himself.

"Oh… Nothing you need to worry about for now."
