Chapter 11

Waiting on the train platform, Hanssen kept an eye on Serena as she headed back towards him with two coffees in her hands. She'd been on edge since reaching the station, even more so when it was announced the train was delayed. Holding out a cup to him as she sat down beside him, she exhaled heavily and leant back on the bench.

"This is going to disrupt my entire schedule for today." she grumbled as she took the lid off her coffee and stirred in a sugar. "I mean, it's just ridiculous! We all have places to be and this train is taking its' damn time!" Throwing the stirrer into the bin beside her, she crossed her legs and harrumphed in frustration. Hanssen wisely decided to stay quiet, sensing that his input at this moment would not be welcome and would most likely resort in him bearing the brunt of her anger. Her head snapped towards him and he hastily looked down at his lap, staring into his coffee and hoping she wasn't about to pick a fight as she was clearly spoiling for one. "Have you called the Hospital and warned them we'll be late?" she asked suddenly, before taking a sip of her drink. "Because I don't want to arrive back to complete and utter chaos because we weren't back on time causing everything to go pear-shaped!" Hanssen swallowed the drink in his mouth and nodded.

"I have informed Mr Griffin of our late departure here. He will have everything under control until we arrive back."

"If we arrive back." she grumbled as she took a gulp of coffee and turned her gaze to a young couple currently standing in front of them, kissing urgently. Rolling her eyes, she turned to glance at Hanssen and saw him watching them thoughtfully before becoming embarrassed and resuming his interest in his coffee. Looking around the platform, Serena was glad she couldn't see Edward anywhere as she really wasn't in the mood to deal with that situation right now. They'd been divorced for over ten years now and she hadn't spoken to him in months after having a rather petty argument with him on the phone one evening. He had been supporting Eleanor's plight to want to go to a music festival, but Serena was having none of it. She knew how easily swayed her daughter was when it came to drink and sometimes drugs, there was not a snowball's chance in Hell she was going to let her go away to camp at a festival. Her and Edward had argued loudly and explosively until she had called him every name under the sun and hung up on him. Neither had called the other back, both being as stubborn as each other. She sighed as she finished her coffee and threw the cup into the bin, taking Hanssen's proffered cup and doing the same.

"Thank you." He said politely, smoothing down his trousers and shifting awkwardly beside her.

"Have you got ants in your pants or something?" She asked him as he turned and frowned at her.

"This isn't exactly the most comfortable place I have ever sat, Ms Campbell." he sniped at her as he leant back trying to minimise his discomfort.

"Well hopefully the train won't be much longer, okay?" He scoffed and she smirked slightly, enjoying seeing him out of his comfort zone...literally. She suddenly felt Hanssen stand up from beside her and she looked around in alarm.

"...of course, no bother at all." Hanssen was saying to a heavily pregnant woman as she took his recently vacated seat with a large sigh.

"It's really very kind of you, most people don't bother!" she chuckled as she pulled a bottle of water from her bag and took a long drink. Serena watched her in intrigue, noticing how jolly she seemed to be, even though she had to be suffering with her size.

"When are you due?" she asked her and the woman turned to face her.

"Next week. I already have 3 at home, two of which were early!" she smiled as she rested a hand on her belly. "I hope this one decides to make an appearance soon, I don't think my bladder can take much more!" she laughed as Serena nodded in understanding.

"I only have the one, but I remember that feeling alright!" she chuckled as the woman held out her hand.

"Regina Twigg." she smiled as Serena took her hand.

"Serena Campbell." She motioned up towards Hanssen and Regina turned her head. "This is Mr Hanssen, CEO of Holby City Hospital." Hanssen felt himself grow taller as she introduced him and his status and he shook Regina's hand formally.

"Pleasure to meet you." he said stiffly as he eyed her belly with slight fear. Serena rolled her eyes and shifted slightly so she was facing Regina.

"So you have another three at home? They must keep you busy!" Serena shook her head, unable to imagine having more than one Eleanor.

"Yeah, if it was up to my husband Andrew, we'd have a whole football team!" she said in exasperation as Serena nodded.

"My husband was the same...until I put my foot down." Hanssen stood awkwardly listening to the conversation the two women were having, feeling rather out of place. He had nothing against discussing pregnancy and children, but it was not something he could really empathise with, never having been there himself.

"I've told Andrew, this is definitely our last one...I can't afford to take any more time off work!" Serena's interest was piqued at the mention of work, as was Hanssen's.

"What is it you do?" she asked as Regina proudly told them.

"I'm a Colonel with the Army, specialising in Bio containment of level 4 hot agents." she replied, shifting to get more comfortable. Serena stared at her in shock and found her gaze again drifting to her stomach. Reading her gaze, Regina laughed and shook her head. "Obviously I haven't been allowed near a hot zone since becoming pregnant...it's unbelievable what those agents can do to a pregnant woman." She shuddered as Hanssen frowned and tilted his head.

"You work with deadly viruses with no cure!?" he asked incredulously as Regina nodded and narrowed her eyes.

"Why...don't think it's an appropriate job for a woman?" Hanssen shook his head insistently and held up his hands.

"No, I didn't mean that, I simply meant...well...that's a highly dangerous job." Regina scoffed and turned to face him properly.

"The way I see it, it's no more dangerous than getting up in the morning! You never know what's going to be waiting for you and it's the same principal with this." Serena and Hanssen continued to listen to the woman for a further 30 minutes before there was an announcement that their train would be arriving imminently.

"Well it was lovely to meet you, I've learnt something new about viruses today!" Serena joked as she helped Regina to her feet and shook her hand.

"It was great to meet you two. Glad there'll be two Doctors on board in case junior here decides to come early!" she joked as she walked away, waving.

"That had better not happen." Hanssen said, deadpan causing Serena to giggle.

"I completely agree, I can't think of anything worse."She shook herself and turned to watch the train pulling slowly into the station. The platform itself was relatively quiet with only a handful of people waiting to board the train. Hanssen held out a hand, ushering Serena to board before him, causing her to roll her eyes as she did so. As they found their seats, a young boy ran towards them and crashed into Hanssen's legs. Looking down at him, he noticed the child wasn't exactly looking 100% well. Just as he registered Serena's words of warning to step back, he saw the child's eyes grow large and his mouth open as liquid escaped him splashing all over Hanssen's trousers. He stood rooted to the spot, unable to move, feeling the liquid seeping through his trousers. Looking down at the child again, he watched him wipe his mouth with the back of his hand and head back down the train. Looking over to Serena, he saw her stood still with her hands over her mouth, trying desperately not to laugh.

"It's not..." he began but she cut him off.

"I know, I know, it's not funny...but Henrik...it kind of is." she sniggered as he shot her a glare which only seemed to make her worse.

"If this is a sign of the journey to come, I'm getting off at the next stop." he said grumpily, taking off his jacket and standing with his arms outstretched, wondering what to do.

"You've never been thrown up on by a child before, have you?" she asked him as he threw her a withering look. "Right, okay, follow me." She moved out from behind the table as the train began to move and she found herself almost losing her balance and falling against him. Shrieking, she pulled away and checked herself for any signs of vomit, luckily there were none.

"Oh dear, what on earth would we do it you got any vomit on you!? It would most probably be the end of the world as we know it!" he quipped sarcastically as she turned to face him, hands on her hips.

"Do you want my help or not?" Trying to out-stare her, he gave up and nodded stiffly. "Right, well behave then." She turned around and made her way out of the carriage, Hanssen following closely behind.

"Are you sure this will work?" he asked as she dabbed at his trousers with cold water.

"It's the best we have here and I doubt you want to travel all the way back smelling of sick." She looked up at him curiously and he nodded in agreement. It wasn't the mixture of baking soda and lemon juice she was putting on his trousers he was worried about, it was the fact she was on her knees in front of him, rubbing her hands up and down his leg. He desperately tried to keep his mind away from the feeling of her touch, which was definitely beginning to give him stirrings of arousal.

"I think that will do, Ms Campbell." he said nervously, shifting uncomfortably as her hands moved higher, rubbing the mixture into the stains.

"Nonsense. They'll be ruined if I stop now." She continued with her task, seemingly oblivious to the effect she was having on him. However, Serena was anything but oblivious. In fact, she was quite enjoying the reactions she was provoking from Hanssen, especially when she noticed him trying to take his mind off what she was doing by mumbling the names of the bones in the leg. Smirking to herself, she returned her focus to what she was doing, figuring the sooner she finished, the sooner he would be able to relax. As she wiped away the excess baking soda, the noticed the stain had all but been lifted and smiled in triumph. "There, almost done...just need to add a little soap." she said lightly, offering him a quick smile as he sighed.

"You could have simply told me how to do this and I could have done it myself avoiding this." he said, feeling frustrated.

"Avoiding what?" she asked, pausing for a moment.

"Avoiding you on your knees in front of me, touching me. I'm sorry but that's quite enough." he snapped suddenly stepping out of her reach.

"I haven't finished." she explained, scooting forwards and reaching for his trousers.

"I don't care, Ms Campbell. We are done here." he said decisively, turning and heading back through to the carriage as Serena watched him go, sighing and getting to her feet, taking the bowl and liquids back to the catering carriage. Hanssen sat at their table-seat, taking deep breaths and trying to ignore the wet feeling coming through his trousers. He vowed that he would never, ever even think about getting on a train again after this. The feelings Serena had stirred in him as she'd touched him had shocked him deeply. In fact, the feelings she'd been stirring in him for the past week or so shocked him. He had always managed to be completely strict with his libido, never allowing it to control his life, but lately, he had found himself wondering what it would be like to give in to his obvious physical attraction to her. He had finally admitted to himself this morning, much to his embarrassment and disgust, that he wanted to sleep with his deputy. He shook himself at his unprofessional thought as he saw her come back into the carriage and sit down opposite him. Stealing a glance at her as she dug around in her bag, he knew he didn't trust her, so why did he still want her?

Serena re-took her seat opposite Hanssen and dug in her bag for her hand sanitizer, wanting to combat the smell of lemon still lingering. She felt badly that she'd acted in such a way as to make him as uncomfortable as she had. She didn't know what she thought she'd been doing over the past week or so, but she'd found herself, at times, flirting with him. She had never flirted with him before and definitely hadn't wanted to, so why was she now? She knew she flirted her way through life with most people, but Hanssen had never been on her radar...at all. The man infuriated her and if she was honest, she didn't trust him one bit. Stealing a glance up at him as he reached for a copy of today's paper from the next table, she gasped with shock at the revelation that she was attracted to him. Cursing herself and mentally chastising herself, she could not believe she had allowed herself to see him in that way. He was her superior, a cold, aloof, isolated loner who probably had no feelings, but she knew that wasn't true. She'd seen the other side of him last night and she found that it had reached to a part deep down inside her. Chuckling to herself at the absurdity of it all, she opened her bag and pulled out her paperwork, flicking back through it and making sure it had all been done.
