It was near midnight. Obi-wan and Ahsoka were sitting around the fire. They were silent. There was nothing to be said. All they could think about was what was about to happen next. Would they make it back to Coruscant alive?
Obi-wan looked at Ahsoka and stood up. "We should get going. Contact Anakin and Padme. Tell them that we're heading out."
Ahsoka nodded and took out her comlink. "Master, you there?"
Padme's voice came on. "Anakin is asleep, but I'm here."
"Okay, well, we're leaving. Aren't you going to get some sleep, too?"
"Once Anakin wakes up, maybe. One of us should be awake, just in case."
Obi-wan signaled Ahsoka that they had to go. "I've got to go." She said.
"Okay. Ahsoka," Padme's voice filled with concern. "Please be careful."
"Don't worry. I'll be fine." Ahsoka said, though she seemed to be convincing herself more than Padme.
She ended the call then faced Obi-wan. "Are you ready?" he asked her.
"Yeah." She lied. Normally, she felt ready for every mission that was handed to her. This one was turning out to be impossible with this new enemy.
"Let's get going." She said to Obi-wan.
Obi-wan sensed she was uneasy. He wished he could tell her that it was going to be okay; that they were going to make it out fine, but even Obi-wan was having doubts. He hadn't seen what Krovan could do, but from what he heard, Krovan was going to be hard to defeat. There was nothing they could do to change it though, so without any further talk, they headed towards Krovan's base.
As Ahsoka ended the call, Padme sighed and leaned back in her chair. She was really worried about them. So was Anakin. She had heard his complaints almost all the way back to the ship. Although, they were more about him not being able to go. Either way, in the end, it all came down to him being worried. Padme looked over at Anakin sleeping. It was tempting to get some rest to, but not until he was awake. She looked out into the desert, not knowing what she expected to see. There was nothing but darkness and sand.
Behind her, Anakin jolted awake. He dragged his hand over his face, and then looked at Padme. He got up from his seat and went to the one next to her. She looked at him as he sat down.
"Did you sleep well?" Padme asked.
"Uh, no." Anakin said, rubbing the back of his head. "It's that same stupid dream. It keeps happening."
Padme looked at him with concern. "Do you think it has something to do with you being on Tatooine?"
He shook his head. "No, it happened on Coruscant too, remember? It doesn't matter. It'll go away, hopefully. Did Ahsoka and Obi-wan arrive at the base yet?"
"They left not too long ago. They'll probably arrive in a little while."
Anakin stared at her until she caught him looking
"What?" Padme said with a smile.
Anakin smiled and looked away. "Nothing. You should probably get some sleep."
"You sure? You're hurt you could use it more."
He waved his hand. "No it's fine. I'll wake you if anything happens."
"Okay." She said, closing her eyes.
Ahsoka and Obi-wan had the base in sight. The only cover they had was the darkness of the night.
"By the looks of it, there's not that many droids." Obi-wan said.
"It's not the droids I'm worried about." Ahsoka replied. "Do I tell them we've arrived?"
"Yes, but make it brief."
Ahsoka took out her comlink. "Padme?"
"Nope, it's Anakin. I'm guessing you're there."
"Yes."
"Alright." Anakin paused. "Ahsoka, I'm expecting to hear how the mission went when you come back, alright?"
"Alright." Her voice shook a little. Not much, but Anakin still caught it.
"Snips, it's going to be fine. You'll make it out."
"Yeah, I'll see you later, Master." She dropped the call, then looked at Obi-wan. "Let's go."
"Do you have the grenades?" Ahsoka nodded, showing him the pack. They ran towards the base. They destroyed the few droids that were guarding the entrance. Once they got into the base, they ran into no trouble. A few droids here and there. It was nothing they couldn't handle. They finally came to a room that was emitting a loud sound "I think we've found what we're looking for." Obi-wan said. The room was circular and right in the middle of it was a tall, cylinder with two antennas sticking out of it. It seemed to be casting a signal. Obi-wan walked to a box against the wall. He opened it and inside were small, black squares with spikes coming out of all four edges on the back.
"What are they?" Ahsoka asked.
Obi-wan shook his head. "I wouldn't know."
"They go in the back of your neck and attach themselves there." Krovan walked in. he had a smirk on his face. "That thing in the middle of the room sends a signal to that. It's sort of like a mind control thing. Sort of. Care for a demonstration?"
"I think we'll pass." Ahsoka said.
Krovan chuckled. "That's okay, it's already proven successful on the test subject."
"What do you mean?" Obi-wan asked.
He laughed again. "All in due time. In the meantimeā¦" he took out his sword.
Obi-wan and Ahsoka ignited their lightsabers. Obi-wan whispered to Ahsoka. "I need you to stay behind me. It's not for protection, just do it."
"Okay."
Krovan struck, Obi-wan blocked. As Obi-wan gained the offensive, Krovan disappeared and was behind him. Krovan hadn't seen Ahsoka, so she took the advantage and tripped him. She brought her blade down on him, but he blocked it. Krovan kicked Ahsoka in the stomach, pushing her back. He disappeared, then was in front of her. Using the back of his blade, he hit the side of her head so hard that it knocked her unconscious. Krovan turned to Obi-wan. Krovan opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, Obi-wan attacked. He swung his blade, but Krovan caught his wrist. He elbowed Obi-wan in the stomach then threw him against the wall. He pressed a button on his wrist and two commandos jumped from the roof. Obi-wan took his attention from Krovan to the droids. As soon as his back was turned, Krovan shot a wire, wrapping it around Obi-wan's neck. Krovan pressed another button and all Obi-wan felt was pain. The pain continued, until all he saw was black.
Anakin stood against the wall of the ship, his arms crossed, tapping his fingers on his arm. He was getting anxious. He thought that it could just be his nerves and his like of sleep, but something wasn't right. He stood there for a couple more minutes before he walked to the ships controls.
"We're going over there."
Padme woke. "What?"
"We're going to go help Obi-wan and Ahsoka."
"You're not supposed to go anywhere, Anakin, you're hurt."
"I know, but something doesn't feel right!"
"Ani, you're probably just beingā¦"
"Paranoid? Yeah, I know that too, but a little help will be better than none, even if I can't do much."
