~Two for One Troubles~

"I don't see anything." Shippo's voice sounded from Akemi's shoulder. She turned her head towards the kit though she couldn't see him. The full moon was at its strongest and so was she. Standing as a full demon, the group, minus Kagome and Inuyasha, was surrounding her and she had hoped they would be able to see whatever it was that had protected her all these years.

"I can't feel them now." She said with a thoughtful expression. "They've always protected me, like when Inuyasha and that other demon attacked me."

"Then maybe you're not fully controlling whatever power it is. Inuyasha's demon blood surfaces when his life is in danger, but he's not able to control it. Maybe your ability is something like that." Miroku suggested.

"Which would mean I would have to put myself in some kind of harm for this to work. That doesn't really sound appealing." Akemi said with a small smile. "But maybe we can trick it somehow." She heard a jingling before Miroku's staff descended on her head with a small amount of force. She lifted an eyebrow. "I get what you're trying to do but I'm going to say that won't do it and if you try it again I'm taking the staff by force."

"It doesn't hurt to try." He said stepping away.

"For you maybe." Akemi said giving a pass over the spot on her head that had been bumped. "Oh! I have a better idea!" She said suddenly. "When I travel, whatever it is helps me not to bump into things. What if I run and you guys follow me, then you can see if you see anything."

"Shouldn't we use this time to rest so we can continue traveling tomorrow? Miroku said that we're less than a day's travel away from Mushin's." Kagome asked from where she was preparing her sleeping bag on the opposite side of the campfire.

"Akemi's only going to be full demon during the night. We can spare a few minutes for this, right?" Sango asked. "Kilala and I will follow." She added turning to Akemi. The wolf demoness nodded and placed Shippo on Miroku's shoulder.

"I wanted to come." He spoke up, looking disappointed.

"If you come then who is going to protect the camp? You know Inuyasha is too bone-headed to properly assess threats and all Miroku needs is a pretty face to be rendered useless. You're the only one who can be trusted to keep an eye on everything." Akemi responded, having sensed Kagome's hard stare warming her side. The kit bolstered up and gave a sharp nod.

"No one's going to attack us with me on the watch!" He shouted.

"We shouldn't be long." Sango said as Kilala transformed into her battle form. "Ready, Akemi?"

"Yep, let's go. I'll start out slow and then pick up speed. I can't feel it now and don't want to crash into a tree or something since I don't know this area." Akemi said heading southward at a jog. Kilala's paws sounded heavily behind her as the cat demon followed. As she got more comfortable and felt the familiar presence washing over her Akemi picked up speed and was soon off the ground and traveling by tree branch. Kilala took flight and watched from above.

"There is something shifting around you." Sango said spotting what looked like dark mist swirling up and around the wolf demon. It was almost like Naraku's miasma but didn't hold a sinister feeling. Instead it was gentle, though still protective. As she looked closer, Sango realized that she could see through the mist when she focused. It swirled mostly around the wolf's head with tendrils spreading as if checking the surrounding.

"I can feel it now." Akemi called up as she traveled. She felt the hum of something communicating with her, and even though she couldn't exactly hear words she somehow understood what she was meant to. "Can you tell me what you see?"

"It's like mist is swirling around you and your immediate surroundings. It's dark and only visible when you pass through the moonlight, otherwise it blends in with the shadows around you."

"Cool. I guess if that's it we can head back for camp." Akemi said coming to a stop, standing at the top of a tree. She took a moment to feel the cool light on her skin and the wind play with her hair before preparing to head back for camp. She had barely left the branch she was on when it exploded behind her. Akemi's head snapped back and then above Kilala let out a pained roar. Drops splattered on the wolf demoness' shoulder but she knew it wasn't rain. The sting of the feline's blood assaulted her nostrils. "What the hell is going on?"

"Kagura." Sango's voice sounded through gritted teeth.

"She works for that Naraku guy right?" Akemi landed on another tree and trained her attention on the presence she hadn't sensed before. She mentally growled, wondering why she hadn't noticed the demoness before now especially given how close she was.

"What's this? Picked up another to your little group?" The wind demoness focused her attention on Akemi's silver eyes. "And a blind one at that. You guys are really getting desperate." She laughed earning a growl from the wolf.

"What do you want Kagura?" Sango demanded, her voice now coming from directly beside Akemi. She could feel Kilala's fur brushing against her arm.

"To kill you of course. I was on my way to wipe out your sad little group. How fortunate of me to find everyone paired up so nicely." Kagura drawled fanning herself from on top her feather.

"Paired up?" Akemi questioned to herself but the wind demoness still heard.

"Didn't you realize? The two of you are here. Inuyasha has chased after Kikyo, the other priestess following. And of course that leaves the monk and the fox kit alone. Kanna should be taking care of them now. Leaving me to kill you two." She flicked her fan sending more blades.

Akemi jumped up to avoid the attack while Kilala took off to the right. Kagura released another wave of blades. Being in the air with nothing to use for redirecting herself, the wolf lifted her arms as a shield, the only thing she could think of doing.

Sango watched as the mist around the wolf demon became solid, swirling in front of Akemi before taking the form of a wolf and receiving the bulk of the attack. Only a single blade made it through and slashed Akemi on the right shoulder. She winced but landed atop another tree, a steady growl echoing from not just her but the mist as well.

"What do we do?" Akemi asked as Sango and Kilala returned to her side.

"We need to get back with the others." Sango said keeping her eyes on Kagura and her weapon raised. "Kagura and Kanna are trouble enough on their own and hell together, but I think the best way for us to defeat them is to group back up."

"Ok then you head for Miroku and Shippo. I'll keep her occupied long enough for you to go then I'll lead her that way. We can't afford for both of us to have our backs to her at once. Plus I'm a smaller target. I'll be able to use the trees as cover." The wolf demon sensed Sango's hesitation and gave a small snarl. "We don't have time to talk about this, so get moving." She said as she pushed Kilala out of the way as another barrage of wind blades closed in on them. Sango still looked unsure but told Kilala to head back for camp.

"Do you really think I'd let you get away?" Kagura taunted as she watched the demon slayer retreating. She sent more blades in Sango's direction

"I think you don't have a choice." Akemi said intercepting the blades, the mist becoming solid again, though this time instead of a full wolf it formed a large paw that met the attacks. The wind demoness huffed though didn't seem concerned.

"Fine, then I'll just have to stop toying with you." She pulled back her fan before doing a large sweeping motion. "Let's see how well you can handle these."

Instead of wind blades, a grouping of directed tornadoes hurled towards the wolf demon. Akemi gritted her teeth as she could sense something was different about this attack but even the mist was having trouble figuring out what this new attack was. Instead of trying to confront it, the mist directed her to avoid the attack. The tornadoes were too large to completely evade, so Akemi was stuck with having to weave in between them. It didn't go well as she was struck numerous times, the wind cutting though her furs and clothes and blood began to bubble out of fresh wounds.

'Well I think that's more than enough time for Sango to make it to camp.' She thought as she landed on the forest floor. After a moment of orienting herself she took off at a full sprint towards the camp, making sure to weave her path as the wind demoness sent more attacks.

"What's the matter? Did the mutt realize she is nothing against me? Run away with your tail between your legs, it makes this more fun." Kagura's voice rang from above filled with venomous humor. She began to unleash stronger waves of attacks and Akemi could feel the forest around her being torn up in the process. Thankfully she was managing to avoid most of the attacks and the ones that did hit were never direct. A small feeling of relief flooded her system as she picked up the scents of camp. "You will not get away that easy." Kagura shouted. Akemi felt that the attack the wind demoness just released was by far the strongest as she could feel the literal pull of the wind as the attack barreled towards her. Though she could not see it, the attack was in the shape of a large dragon with glowing yellow eyes. As it closed in on her its maw opened wide, unleashing a screech that almost made the wolf demon wish she were back in her half demon form so her ears could flatten against her skull and at least block out some of the sound.

'I am not going to be able to avoid this one.' She thought but still ran in an attempt to not be hit. With an increasing sense of dread she realized unlike the other attacks, this one was not on a straight path but rather followed her movements. Not only was this one going to hit her but it was going to be direct and at full force. She cast sightless eyes up towards the moon. 'Moon Mother, I really could use a hell of a miracle right now.' She could feel the mist moving around her though she doubted it could ward off most of the attack. The mist continued to grow though instead of simply surrounding the wolf, she could feel it pressing against her, leaking into her pores and some even entering her nose and mouth so that she found herself coughing. 'Whose side are you on?' She thought as she stumbled from the force of what she had thought was her protector. The force continued until it completely disappeared. She could no longer feel the mist surrounding her but instead felt as if it were now all within her, flowing though her body, mixing with her blood. Then it felt as if something inside her broke and she felt the same feeling she had when fighting Inuyasha. She tried to fight to remain conscious but whatever had broken within her was leaking a power that was too strong for her to control.

xXx

Sesshomaru would have rolled his eyes if he were a lesser demon as he watched his brother being distracted by the dead miko, completely unware that, one, he was being watched by the reincarnation of said dead miko and two, that he, Sesshomaru, was close enough to end his miserable half-breed life. He only watched the ridiculous show because the dead miko was obviously either in alliance with Naraku or of some use to the spider, because wherever she went he was likely to turn up. He was soon rewarded as he felt a change in the air and scented two of Naraku's incarnations. For a moment Inuyasha seemed to notice the change as well but was sucked back into the miko's trance as she placed her hands on either side of his face and made him look back at her.

Having found his fill of disgust he turned and headed in the direction of Naraku's underlings. He passed the reincarnation and she jumped, fumbling for her bow and arrows but stopped as he continued past her without a word or glance. As he walked he gained speed, though to the average eye he still appeared to walk with the same detached grace. There was a new presence intermingled in the fight that was strong enough to be looked into. Somewhere in the back of his memory he knew he had felt something like this before, but it was from a time so long ago he found it hard to recall.

He found the demon slayer with the new presence fighting off Kagura. It appeared to be a wolf demoness and as he noticed her furs he briefly wondered if it was the missing wolf demoness that had been a thorn in his side for the past year. She seemed to be the same age and size and was clearly from the west, but Naru had said the missing wolf was a half-demon and he could tell from scent and looks that this was a full wolf demoness. But why would a wolf demon be away from their pack and be so far as to be in a completely different land? His eyes narrowed as he caught a glimpse of her as she dodged an attack, her pupil-less eyes reflecting the moonlight.

'Cast out because she is blind.' He concluded. It wasn't unheard of from other clans but he'd never known wolves to cast out any no matter what. Naru had already allowed a half-breed to remain among his ranks, it seemed ridiculous to throw out one of his own simply because she was blind. And as Sesshomaru watched her avoid Kagura's attacks with a strange power he hadn't seen before, he could tell she had enough skills to fend for herself. One of Kagura's attacks managed to hit the wolf demon on the shoulder revealing a brand in the shape of an 'X'. Part of his grooming to become lord of the west was familiarizing himself with the customs and rituals of all the clans that lived within the western borders. 'She was cast out because she is blind and an omega.' Though it still did not seem likely in his opinion, he found little interest in trying to sort through the logic of wolves. Instead he noted it and focused on Kagura. Perhaps at a later time he might ask this wolf demoness if she had encountered the half-demon he was looking for, if she had gotten this far she may have run into the missing wolf.

The demon slayer headed for where he could sense the rest of their pathetic pack, leaving the demoness to fend off Kagura's attacks. She did fairly well on her own, avoiding most attacks and managing never to be hit straight on. After a few minutes of toying around the wolf demoness dropped below the trees and took off running in the direction the slayer had gone. Kagura also dropped the act and began to attack in earnest and unleashed a massive attack that had the western lord reaching for his sword. The wolf tried moving out of the course of the attack but it followed her movements, the dragon shaped wind closing in with enough force to tear her apart. The strange power she had worked its way around her like a barrier but then disappeared, absorbing into her. She stumbled and he again felt the urge to roll his eyes. He drew his sword and began moving forward reasoning that he would prefer she stayed alive long enough for him to question.

He raised his sword to unleash a Dragon Strike but another shift in the air made him pause, this shift was much stronger than the one before. His attention returned to the wolf demoness as black mist exploded out of her body and grew. He was forced to jump back or risk being caught in whatever was happening. The mist grew until it towered above the trees before taking shape and solidifying. It morphed into that of a wolf and Sesshomaru realized the wolf demoness had transformed into her true form. The memory that had been to hazy to pull up suddenly became crystal clear as he gazed at the large, midnight blue wolf. It captured Kagura's attack beneath heavy paws and snapped the dragon in half between bared fangs. He had seen a wolf like this before when he was young, very young.

"Mi'lord! The Great Shadow has been spotted heading this way." An older dog demon spoke to Sesshomaru's father. His father paused in their sparing session and straightened himself.

"See Sesshomaru to his quarters." His father announced motioning towards the castle behind them.

"I want to go with you." Sesshomaru responded going up to his father though he was not even up to his father's chest yet.

"You are not old enough." His father said in a tone that left no room for argument. He turned and headed for the gate in the direction that an immense presence was approaching from.

The Dog General had barely made two steps when a burst of demonic aura swept across the surroundings. A mass of darkness blocked out the sun looking like storm clouds but formed into a wolf, whose blue eyes narrowed towards his father. His father responded by transforming into his own true form, he and the wolf standing at the same size. The dog demon that had announced the approach ushered Sesshomaru into the castle, where he immediately went to his father's study, which had a window that faced where his father was. By then his father was locked in battle with the wolf in a tangle of silver and midnight blue fur with splashes of red beginning to cover them both.

The fight had lasted for five sun sets, with his father finally emerging the victor having killed the Great Shadow, a wolf demon whose real name long been lost in legend. It had been rumored that the Great Shadow had never had a mate or pups, but as Sesshomaru watched the wolf demoness he had no doubt in his mind that this was a decedent.

The wolf turned to face the wind demoness, its silver eyes now having red slits in them. Kagura hesitated, not knowing what to make of this turn of events. She regained her composer and raised her fan to attack again but the wolf demoness lunged, moving faster than someone her size should have been able to, and snapped at where the wind demoness was. Kagura was forced to halt her attack and retreat or else be eaten by the wolf.

"Filthy mutt!" The wind sorceress spat as she avoided one of the wolf's paws. She tried lifting higher into the air but the wolf demon gave a strong heave and jumped, managing to still rip a bit of the feather Kagura was floating on. The wolf demon's assault lasted for a while before the Kagura managed to get a safe enough distance away. "Kana!" She called out before retreating. From the corner of his eyes Sesshomaru could see the mirror demoness disappear, leaving behind a battered monk.

With no one left to attack, the wolf turned, ears perked and scented the air. It let out a satisfied and victorious howl that echoed across the forest. Then it seemed to explode, turning into a cloud of black mist that evaporated into the fading moonlight. Though he could not see her from this distance, Sesshomaru could sense that the wolf demoness had changed back. He placed his sword back in its sheath and headed in the direction of the demoness. His curiosity had peeked and he had still to ask her about the missing half-demon. He came up to the campsite as the demon slayer, the least injured of those who fought, was helping to bandage the monk and wolf demoness.

"When that mutt shows his face back here I'm going to bash it in." The wolf demoness was growling. "You never leave your pack to fend for itself! And why the hell did Kagome follow him?" Apparently she wasn't familiar with the love affair of his brother, something Sesshomaru wished he could also say.

"Omega." He spoke and the five in the clearing stiffened becoming aware of his presence. The monk struggled to his feet, the demon slayer and wolf demoness moving faster as they spun to face him clearly ready to fight. The feline demon hissed from beside the fox kit.

"Sesshomaru!" The demon slayer shouted. "What do you want? Inuyasha is not here."

"I have no interest in the half-breed." He responded not missing the way the wolf flinched at his words. "I am here to question the omega."

"Omega?" The monk's voice was laced in confusion as he glanced towards the wolf demoness.

"The mark on your shoulder, I've never seen it before now, your clothes hid it." The demon slayer seemed to understand as she glanced at the wolf's right shoulder.

"I know." She responded, an edge to her tone. "What is the lord of the west doing out of his lands?" She asked and even though he knew the question wasn't directed at him, Sesshomaru responded.

"My actions need no explanation, especially to an omega." He said.

"They do when you are seeking answers from me." She retorted and he raised an eyebrow. It wasn't very often that anyone spoke to him in such a tone but he was not within his lands and found no need to start a war with another lord over a single demoness.

"You are of the western wolf tribe." He stated and when he received a tense nod he continued. "A half-demon omega there went missing over a year ago. Have you seen this half-demon?"

"I don't see much." She said motioning to her eyes. He felt a growl growing in his chest at her utter lack of respect. "But no, I haven't seen the wolf you speak of." The monk and demon slayer gave her questioning looks but she didn't respond to them. "Is that all?"

He thought of putting the demoness in her place but Kagura's trail was still fresh enough to follow and he had limited knowledge on the type of power she possessed. Only a fool ran into a battle he was unprepared for. Plus he could feel his brother approaching as the sun appeared on the horizon. Instead he turned and headed in the direction Kagura had retreated in. Though out of sight, he was still within hearing distance when the demon slayer spoke.

"Akemi what was that about? Why is Sesshomaru looking for you? You are the half demon he's talking about right?" She questioned making the western lord stop; the name of the wolf he had been looking for was Akemi.

"Probably and how the hell would I know?" The wolf demoness growled in response before her voice dropped. "Let's just hope he's gone."

The sun crested over the landscape and for the third time he felt a shift coming from the wolf demon. Her aura weakened and he began to feel a human presence blending with her demonic one before it settled and he felt the distinct aura of a half demon. Faster than any in the clearing could pick up on he was back and holding Akemi up by her throat, his eyes narrowed as he took in her features. Her midnight blue hair was now black, her eyes shifted from sightless silver to alert blue and two wolf ears now rested on top of her head. Her hands gripped his arm in a useless attempt to pry him off her. In the background he could tell the monk and slayer were arming themselves and preparing to attack him.

"I do not take well to those who try to deceive me." He growled at her.

"Fine, I left the western wolf tribe. Why do you care?" She said, her voice straining from the pressure he was putting on her neck.

"I'm taking you back. It's your choice if you arrive alive or dead." He announced and her entire frame stiffened at his words. Her ears flicked back and her eyes widened.

"You can't make me go back." She said and he squeezed harder making her cough. "Please don't make me go back."
