[ Meredith and Derek continue to try for another baby. Addison and Alex receive devastating news. Richard comforts Bailey].
Derek's voiceover: We take it all for granted. We take our brain stems for granted until they are no longer working to serve their purpose of responsibility for our blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. We have a total of seventy-eight organs and thirteen systems in the human body that are responsible for keeping us alive and functioning. Each organ is essential and necessary for our health. In medicine, there are no bare necessities. We need everything that keeps us functioning or else we die. Our systems and our organs help us to stand to see eye to eye with someone we love-sit down at the dinner table with our children- to touch our loved ones- digest the food we eat with our children-reproduce to bring more living miracles into the world and fight disease when life structs us down. If you ask me, I'd say those are some pretty powerful resources.
S1- Meredith and Derek's house.
Derek: It's only three more days left until we can finally take Zola out for her first ferry boat ride.
Meredith: I need to get up. I need to go check on my post-ops before I can get one of the incoming trauma's today. I also need to text Mark to see how Lexie is doing with being back home after she got discharged yesterday.
Derek: Please stay in bed with me for a minute longer.
Meredith: Derek...
Derek: Meredith..
Meredith: Love really does make you crazy. Doesn't it?
Derek: I love you. Good morning and good morning to you two. * Touches Meredith's stomach*.
Meredith: Derek, stop it! We don't know if I'm even pregnant already. It would be a miracle if I was. Even if we do have a miracle baby, I can assure you that it will probably be born with three heads!
Derek: You're my miracle. Our family is our miracle. This is all going to be okay. * Derek holds Meredith's hand*.
Meredith: Why do you always say that to me?
Derek: Because it's the truth. This is so nice.
Meredith: What?
Derek: The peace and the quiet. It feels like it's just us for once without all of the noise. Where's Cristina? She is usually in a room about twenty minutes ago with her screaming at you to get up to go jogging.
Meredith: She's busy on her cardio trauma case. I think part of the reason she's so eager about this case is because Owen's on it. She put Owen on it instead of Kepner.
Derek: Does that mean? Do you think she's still in love with Owen? Oh no, how did i become this person that cares about one of the members in my Wife's frat house?
Meredith: Hey! This house is not a frat house.
Derek: Only Addison, Alex, Cristina and my sister live here.
Meredith: Exactly. That's not that bad.
Derek: I have to go take a shower. Will you meet me for some coffee in the afternoon?
Meredith: You bet. Love you.
S2- Seattle Grace; a patients room.
Arizona: Amelia, I was wondering if you could give me sort of an unofficial consult before I get neuro involved with this. It's really important.
Amelia: Are you sure I'm the right person for a consult in OB?
Arizona: I'm pretty sure you can give me a consult on this.
Amelia: Okay. Why do you even need my help? The baby looks clearly has ancelpy from the ultrasound.
Arizona: I thought it might be something different because I didn't notice it right away. I was correct. This baby has ancelpy. Oh lord, how am I going to...?
Amelia: What's wrong? You seem a little attached to this ultrasound. Who's baby is it? Is the mother one of your old paitents?
Arizona: Something like that. Amelia, this is Alex and Addison's baby. Alex is never going to be the same after this. This will just confirm what he's been telling me all these years that nothing is ever good for him. Maybe he's right. Maybe this is meant to show me that I need to stop pushing him so hard for a happy life when his chances are just screwed up every time!
Amelia: It's okay. You don't have to tell them right away. Do you need me to help you with anything? I'm right here. I'm here for you. It's going to be okay.
Arizona: How am I going to even manage to tell them at all?
Amelia: Maybe you can make it a bittersweet moment. It's horrible that their baby is born with this birth defect, but do you know of any way to fix it so this baby has just a little longer of a life?
Arizona: There is one surgery that I could perform to permanently correct the defect. The rare surgery only usually has ended with both the mother and the baby being dead. It's the hugest risk a mother and her child could ever take. There are two other options. Addison could carry the baby to it's full term and donate her organs, or she could get an abortion. An abortion is the most common option people chose. Are you sure Addison would even want that? You know her better than I do.
Amelia: I know both Addison and Alex have a huge support system at home. Addison has a huge support system here and in L. A. Alex has one here too. He has me and he has his mentor you, he has Bailey, he has that intern named Jo as his friend now too. They're both strong. They can do this. What I do know about Addison is she will want the truth about her baby. She will want to be prepared.
Arizona: Thank you for this. I know it must not be easy for you to consult on these types of cases because of what happened. Your brother and I are good friends.
Amelia: It's not easy but I love being a doctor. I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.
S3- Seattle Grace; the hallway.
Meredith: Are you the intern transfer?
Deluca: Yes. I am. Dr. Bailey told me I would be on someone's service. Do you know where I can find that out?
Meredith: Well, you're on my service. Do you express an interest in general?
Deluca: I requested general actually. I got to do a lot of work at the other hospital I used to work at in Italy.
Meredith: Um, your Italian?
Deluca: I am.
Meredith: We really don't have time for me to explain the rules to you right now. You can just catch onto the rules by following the other interns example. I need you to go check on my post-ops while I go make a phone call. Is that okay? After you finish, you can meet me in the lab here. * Opens the door and leaves*.
Deluca: Great. I'm getting stuck with the research guru instead of participating in cutting edge new surgeries.
Lexie: Excuse you?
Deluca: Ma'am, I don't think it's a good idea for you to be out of your bed.
Lexie: Excuse you again? I'm not a patient here. Well, I was a patient here. I'm Dr. Grey.
Deluca: That's impossible. How about we get you back into bed? It's okay. I think you are having some hullancation. That is Dr. Grey in there. You aren't Dr. Grey.
Lexie: I am Dr. Lexie Grey. She's my sister in there.
Deluca: Your family must have really good genetics. I'm really sorry.
Lexie: Yeah. I take it you're the transfer they sent us.
Deluca: I'm the one. I really should get going. By the way, I think you are a brilliant neuro surgeon. I've read your work and you are just... KABOM! You are a great surgeon.
Lexie: Thanks. You should probably be going right about now.
Deluca: Doing that.
S4- Seattle Grace; the lab.
Meredith: Lexie, what are you doing here? You are supposed to stay home today to relax. It's just one day before you can return back to work. The day is supposed to help you feel ready.
Lexie: I know. I have my baby and I have Mark. He's staying home with the baby for two months to keep her settled because Jackson moved things around and agreed to it as a favor to Mark. We still have to make an income and I love my job, so I'm working. I just want to be here. I want to see you. I want to see Derek. I want to observe from the OAR gallery.
Meredith: I get that. I do.
Lexie: Are you saying you'll let me stay in the lab for an hour before I go home?
Meredith: What kind of a sister would I be if I didn't?
Lexie: Thanks.
Meredith: And also, I need to go meet Derek for coffee in about thirty minutes. It means you are stuck with the new guy and not me!
Lexie: I knew there had to be some alternative motive. * They both laugh*.
S5- A patients room.
Alex: You paged Robbins?
Addison: Hey, you paged?
Arizona: Yes. I paged both of you because there's something you need to know.
Alex: What is it? Is it something to do with our baby?
Arizona: I think you should both sit down.
Addison: Whatever it is, you can tell us. We want to know.
Arizona: Meredith said you might be like that. I need you to sit down before I tell you. I need to explain the paths you can take. Right now, I am the doctor.
Addison: We understand. What is it?
Arizona: Your baby is ancelptic. There are three paths you can take. You have three options.
Alex: What does that mean? What are you talking about?
Arizona: It means... It means your baby has no brain.
Alex: How can that be? You said we were expecting a health baby! Did you lie to us? Did you?
Addison: STOP! Yelling doesn't help anything. I know that's a little hypocritical of me to say because I just yelling. We need to listen to her.
Arizona: The first option is a very, very risky surgery. It almost always ends in both the baby and the mother dying. It is a rare, cutting edge surgery that if done successfully can permeantly correct the defect. It is such a high risk that almost no one does it. Only a few people have done it and only one has lived out of those three. It is the riskiest surgery in Obstreic history. The second option is the most common one although it is defitenly the saddest. You could consider aborting the baby. The third is you could carry the baby to full term and donate her organs.
Addison: Can you give us time to think about this?
Arizona: Of course.
Addison: Well, I guess I should say thank you for reading the potions to us.
Arizona: It's okay if both of you are angry at me. This is a lot to digest. I don't need an answer right away. You can go.
Addison: Alex, I just need a moment to myself. I'll see you at Meredith and Derek's after shift. * Leaves crying*.
Alex: How could you not tell me this? HOW COULD YOU? You should have told me this at the first ultrasound before I got attached to the baby and Addison! Robbins, I was going to propose.
Arizona: I am so, so sorry. I truly am deeply sorry. If there's anything I can do..
Alex: NO! You have done enough to ruin my life today. If you see even the slightest shadow of me, you need to go away and leave me alone! * Slams the door and leaves*.
Arizona: I am so sorry. * Whispers to herself*.
S6- The bathroom.
Meredith: Hey, why are you crying?
Addison: Nothing. I just need to wash my hands. I'm okay. I'm fine as you would say.
Meredith: Okay then.
* Meredith goes into the stall and takes the pregnancy test. It's positive*.
Meredith: Addison, are you still here?
Addison: Yes.
Meredith: I just took a test.
Addison: What do you mean a test?
Meredith: I took a pregnancy test and it's positive. It looks like you and I are both pregnant now. This is perfect. Derek has been wanting to expand our family for a while now. I was nervous at first but now I'm not. I'm going to tell him. Is it too early for me to be telling him? It's just even more perfect because I don't have to worry about what Lexie will think because she has her own baby.
Addison: Yeah. It's perfect. Life is so perfect like that, right? It's just so perfect. Our lives are perfect.
Meredith: Are you sure you're okay Addison? Is there anything you need to tell me?
Addison: No. Um, I have to go. I'm happy for you. Do you want to celebrate tonight?
Meredith: No. Derek and I decided we were going to order pizza tonight.
Addison: Oh, okay. I should go.
Meredith: Bye. * Addison leaves*.
Deluca: Is this the men's bathroom?
Meredith: No. Hey! You can't just come in here.
Deluca: One of the interns spilled coffee on me. Is it okay if I take my shirt off in here?
Meredith: You're asking me if it's okay for you to take off your shirt in front of me, your attending and on top of that, in the women's bathroom?
Deluca: I guess so.
Meredith: No. Take a left and on the right side is where you will see the men's bathroom.
Deluca: Okay then. * Opens the door and leaves and sees Meredith in there as well*.
S7- The coffee cart.
Meredith: Hey. How's Warren?
Derek: He hasn't woken up yet. He should wake up in a few weeks or so. Edwards is monitoring him. How's that intern? Did you hear he's Itlian?
Meredith: You have that face on.
Derek: What face? There is no face. My face is my face. Do you have a problem with that because this morning you didn't.
Meredith: I love your face but you're making a face. He is... cute, but Derek, you are the love of my life. He's a stupid intern and I'm not Addison. I'm not cheating on you. I love you. You have now become the father of not only Zola but were having another baby.
Barista: Two coffees for Dr. Shepard and Dr. Grey.
Derek: Thanks. Are you saying what I think you're saying?
Meredith: Yes. I'm pregnant with your child.
Derek: I told you everything would be okay and were pregnant. Were having another baby.
Meredith: We really are. You can have my coffee. I'm not in a coffee mood. Arizona once told me that coffee is bad for the baby when Callie was pregnant.
Derek: Good because I'm in a coffee mood. Meredith, I love you. I am going to love our baby so much. Would it be wrong if I kissed you right now in front of all the judgy nurses and doctors walking by?
Meredith: No. It would not be wrong. * They kiss*.
S8- Ben's room.
Richard: Hey Bailey. There's someone looking for Ben. I think he said his name was Robert Sullivan.
Bailey: That's Ben's boss.
Richard: Do you want me to give them an update on Ben's condition?
Bailey: What condition? The condition where he hasn't woken up yet and most likely never will? Is that what you want to tell Ben's boss?
Richard: I am so sorry Bailey. If there's anything you need me to do, I will be happy to do it.
Bailey: I should be the one apologizing. I gave up on you when I found out that Thomas Taylor was suing you for medical malpractice. I should have fought harder for you. I know that now sir. You shouldn't had have to settle the case at all. There shouldn't even have been a case. For what it's worth, I think you're a great doctor.
Richard: I know that Bailey but there is nothing you could have done. I did mess up. I paralyzed that man but now it's settled. That's all that matters now that I get to be a doctor at your hospital. This is your hospital. It always has been.
Bailey: Thank you sir. Who's looking for an update on Ben? Just his boss right?
Richard: Practically, the whole Seattle Fire Department. They're all outside waiting.
Bailey: Do you want to go talk to them?
Richard: I'll stay with you. How about we let them see Warren?
Bailey: Are you sure? Do you think that's what Ben wants to see them?
Richard: The Seattle Fire department is Ben's home. Of course that's what he wants but it's your choice to make as his wife.
Bailey: Send them in.
* Chasing Cars plays as everyone comes into his room*.
Dean: Dr. B, I am so sorry. I know Warren will make it through this. He has to.
Bailey: Thank you Miller.
Dean: My friend, Jack Gibson, and I brought Ben flowers. Is that okay?
Bailey: Thank you so much again. I'll put them by his bedside.
Robert: We just wanted to come see him. I know you probably hate me because I sometimes push Ben too hard, and I inspire him to run into burning buildings but I want you to know that everyone at the station is pulling for him. My friend and I also brought you flowers. Ben's " work wife" Travis Montgomery also brought you food for your family. Ben told me that you have a son.
Bailey: I do. Thank you. Were good. Ben loves his job and I love Ben. So you don't have to blame yourself for this. It isn't your fault. You're a good boss.
S9- The outside of Seattle Grace.
Alex: Hey.
Addison: Hi.
Alex: Do you think we should just talk about it?
Addison: Talk about what?
Alex: Our options.
Addison: I already aborted Mark's baby. I think an abortion is off the table.
Alex: Okay. What else?
Addison: I don't know. I have to go anyway.
Alex: Addison...
Addison: What? I don't understand what you want me to say to you that will make this situation better. There's no hope. There's nothing literally.
Alex: I want you to say that you want to do the surgery.
Addison: What? You're not making any sense right now. Frankly, no one is right now. I can't talk about this with you.
Alex: I don't want to talk about this either but it needs to be faced. We need to face this together.
Addison: No. Alex, I'm the one who needs to face it. I need to go as I said before. We will talk about this when I'm ready to talk about this with you. I told you that would be when I get home. The discussion is over.
S10- Seattle Grace; the lab.
Meredith: Derek, I am working right now!
Deluca: Good afternoon Dr. Shepard.
Derek: There's just something I need to talk about with you really quickly. I promise I'll be like the flash.
Meredith: Now is not the time for you to make jokes. What is so important that you had to make me leave my intern in the lab and step outside?
Derek: This is serious.
Meredith: Everything with you is serious.
Derek: It's about Cristina.
Meredith: What is it?
Derek: She isn't in love with him anymore, but... he and Amy have been spending more time together. I think that's why she put Owen on the case to keep him away from Amelia. She doesn't have feelings for him anymore but I know him and Cristina are friends.
Meredith: It's all just way too complicated. I wish Teddy were here to help him. That's his person.
Derek: Where's Teddy? The last I heard she was staying at his house with her husband.
Meredith: They're flying to Iraq to get their son.
Derek: Oh. I also came to ask how you how you two are doing.
Meredith: Stop it Derek! Really! Also, there's something else I need to talk to you about. Does Addison seem off to you?
Derek: No. Why?
Meredith: No reason. Anything else you need to say that disrupts my day?
Derek: Oh, yes, we have an appotiment with Robbins at 1:30. You may have to move away from your intern because of that. He's very attractive but were talking about our baby here. Baby trumps Italian.
Meredith: Stop it! He's looking at you!
Derek: He can keep looking all day long if he wants.
Meredith: Bye. I'll be there.
S11- Seattle Grace exam room; Meredith's ultrasound.
Derek: Hey, are you okay?
Arizona: Yeah. I'm fine. Are you guys ready to see your baby?
Derek: We are. Right Mer?
Meredith: Yes. I guess so. We can look at it's two heads and five heartbeats. I'm sure that will cheer us all up.
Derek: I am sorry about her.
Arizona: It's fine. I'm going to put some cold gel on your stomach and then a picture of the baby will come up. Wow, the baby looks amazing. She's still very small because this is the earliest stage in the pregnancy, but wow, now I rember of why I got into this job to see babies like this with families like yours. How's Zola?
Derek: She's good. We should get Sofia and her for a playdate sometime. Has Sofia met baby Meredith yet?
Arizona: No. Were waiting until the baby settles in before we do that.
Meredith: That sounds like a good idea. Derek and I are actually thinking about sending Zola to school. Do you have any suggestions?
Arizona: I think you should talk to Mark because he truly knows almost every school in Washington. He picked out Sofia's school.
Meredith: Thanks for doing this for us.
* Addison walks by with a chart and sees Derek and Meredith talking to Arizona*.
Arizona: This is your baby. We don't know the gender yet but this is the baby. Everything looks well so far.
Derek: Thank you. Is there any prenatal vitamins Meredith should be taking for the first trimester?
Arizona: Yes, there's a lot of things she will need to do to keep this baby healthy including going to periodic ultrasound's to monitor the baby's progress through the whole first trimester. I have two files to keep track of Meredith's pregnancy. The first one is for Meredith as a patient and the second one is for me to give to you guys that provides you with all of the information.
Derek: Okay.
Meredith: Does that mean were done with the first ultrasound?
Arizona: Yes. Can I ask you guys a question?
Both: Sure.
Arizona: Does Addison know that Meredith is pregnant?
Derek: No. Why?
Meredith: Why? She seems off.
Arizona: No reason. You are all ready to go and should I fax the information in the file to you or Derek?
Meredith: Me.
Arizona: Okay.
S12- The Denny clinic.
Meredith: Alex, there you are! I've been looking all over the place for you! It's time to leave. It's dark outside you know that right?
Alex: What? What are you talking about?
Meredith: It's time to go home.
Alex: Okay, okay.
Alex: Mer, wait.
Meredith: What is it?
Alex: Mer... there's something you should know.
Meredith: Again, what is it?
Alex: Something... there is- there's something wrong with Addison and I's baby.
Meredith: Oh Alex...
Alex: She left for L. A a couple hours again. She left me a sticky note in my locker at the attendings lounge that she booked the first flight out to L. A, and nobody knows. She's gone.
Meredith: Alex, you know how sorry I am. Is there anything I can do?
Alex: No. I just need you and oddly, I think I want to talk Cristina right now.
Meredith: Then you really must be in pain. God, I'm so sorry Alex.
Amelia: Meredith! I need to talk to you!
Meredith: Yes.
Amelia: It's about Addie. I think we should go outside if he doesn't know.
Meredith: He knows. ( Meredith lays in the bed next to Alex's.).
Amelia: What are you doing? We need to go home.
Meredith: Just get a bed. Amelia, Alex is my family. I'm staying and so are you. Grab a bed.
Amelia: Okay. I guess I made a new friend too along with you.
Meredith: I thought you said we weren't friends.
Amelia: Well, I guess we are now. We all are.
Derek: What is everyone doing in here? Meredith, Zola's at home and she's waiting for us.
Amelia: Trust me, just sit by me. I'll explain it later.
