Chapter 10
Asami and Mako walk into the examination room and immediately see Bolin and Korra on separate bed adjacent to each other. As they ran over to each of their bedsides a nurse with long, dark brown hair, dark skin, and light blue eyes -who must have been a healer- stopped them half way down the room.
The nurse signaled with a simple wave of the hand and sent the other nurses, along with Bolin and Korra, away to the next room. "What are you two doing in here?" The nurse asked in a firm, and quite terrifying, tone. "Who let you in here?"
"The Doctor let us in!" Mako exclaimed. "Those two are our friends and we need to see them!" He screamed. Asami placed a hand on his shoulder, mentally asking for him to keep calm.
Mako sighed then fixed his gloves before he pointed a finger in the nurse's unflinching face. "Look," Mako began, his tone quiet but firm, "I know you're just trying to do your job, but I demand you let us both see my brother," he pointed to his chest with his thumb, "her boyfriend, " he pointed behind him to Asami who blushed a bit, "and my girlfriend, who might I add is the Avatar as well." He finished threw his teeth. His amber eyes seemed to glow red with rage, his shark-shaped eyebrows crunched together in a threatening and unapproachable angry glare, and his teeth showed and clenched as embers burned and lit up from within his mouth.
The nurse's strong and intimidating disposition quickly melted under the anger of the fire-bender. She looked like she couldn't take the heat any longer so she let them pass.
As they quickly walked toward the door, Asami was surprised that Mako could hold in such anger.
The two barged through the door and were, once again, stopped by a doctor. Mako was sick of this. So before the Doctor could say a word, he grabbed his shoulder and pushed him harshly into the wall next to him then kept walking. The nurses immediately stepped out of Mako's way, not wanting to face his fury.
They soon approached the two beds and saw Bolin and Korra fast asleep, probably doped up on meds.
Mako knelt down next to Korra and grabbed her limp, pale hand, squeezing so tight that it seemed as if he'd never let go.
Korra's breathing was now even, and she was fighting to keep her eyes open. She lazily turned her head to look at Mako, her perfect blue eyes staring straight into his amber ones causing him to let go of the fury he felt before, and replace it with love and concern.
She opened her mouth and let out a deep breath before she began to talk. "Mako…" She began in a hoarse whisper then gave him a weak, but sincere, smile that caused the fire-bender's grip on her hand to tighten just a bit.
"Yes, Korra? What is it?" He asked in a soft tone, with a crack in his voice that indicated he was holding in a cry. "Korra, what is it!? Tell me what's wrong!" He demanded as she slowly blinked her beautiful azure eyes.
"Mako…" She began once again giving him a slight frown. "We have a pro-bending match… We have a match against… Against the Wolf-Bats…" She gave a determined expression. Just like she always does before a match.
"Korra, the Wolf-Bats aren't a team anymore… Remember?" He said in a loud whisper as he placed his free hand over the one that was on Korra's and shook it.
Korra narrowed her stare at him in confusion. "What are you saying, Mako… But, Asami… Asami is dating you because she… She hit you with her… Her Vespa, Mako." She finished as she held her confused expression.
"Korra, you're not making any sense right now!" He shook her hand then turned to the doctor he pushed into the wall and practically screamed at him. "What's WRONG with her!? Tell me what's WRONG with her!" He demanded as the doctor looked at the clipboard at the end of Korra's bed.
"Well," the doctor began, "it seems that -judging by symptoms of dehydration, vomiting, and abdominal cramps- she, and her friend, have food poisoning." He placed the clipboard back at the end of the bed then continued. "We have found no signs of Electrolyte Abnormalities in either of them, so that is very good." He finished.
"What's an Electrolyte Abnormality?" He asked, now scared that they may have made a mistake in not finding one within her or Bolin.
"An Electrolyte Abnormality is an imbalance in the level of any of a number of chemicals -electrolytes- in the blood stream. I.E chloride, sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphate and bicarbonate. Symptoms vary depending on which electrolyte is involved and the severity of the imbalance." He explained then looked to Mako who had many questions, but one was circling his mind like crazy. But Asami beat him to it.
"How severe can this imbalance be, doctor?" She asked with a cracked and strained voice similar to Mako's.
"Severe cases can readily lead to death." He began, getting a wide eyed expression of great concern from Mako and Asami. "An Electrolyte Abnormality can be caused by excessive loss of body fluid through vomiting or diarrhea, kidney conditions, malabsorption and various drugs such as diuretics and chemotherapy drugs." He let out a deep breath then continued. "We assume that these two could have had this because of excessive vomiting or diarrhea because they have a majority of the symptoms tied to food poisoning."
"They have had really bad abdominal cramps; they've been sweating profusely, and threw up literally all the contents of their stomachs then dry heaved the whole way to the hospital." Asami began then turned to Mako with frightened, wide eyes. "It must have been those dumplings!" She exclaimed. "They must've been undercooked or something! Augh, this is all MY fault!" She screamed then fell to her knees.
Mako placed a firm, yet comforting, hand on her shoulder. "No, it's not!" He told her. "You had no idea they were undercooked. Do NOT blame yourself for something you didn't do!"
She looked up at him and smiled, a tear rolling down her cheek. "I know, but I just can't shake the feeling of remorse."
"You are NOT responsible… Asami." Came Bolin's weak voice from beside her. "I don't wanna see you… scold yourself for something… Something that was someone else's fault…" He said strongly and reassuringly. "I don't like to see you so… Down." He shakily reached out his pale, cold hand. Asami took his hand, and he immediately squeezed her fingers. "Not when you found out the truth about your father… Not when you knew you had to take him down… Not when they threw him in prison…" He looked at her with those shining green eyes. "And especially not when you had to see Mako turn all his attention from you… To Korra…" He gave her a weak, but genuine, smile. "I've had a crush on Korra for a while… But when she kissed Mako I… I knew my heart wasn't with her…" He began slowly. "When I saw you being constantly… rejected by Mako so he could… Could focus on finding Korra… I wanted to be the one to comfort you…"
"Bolin… I had no idea." Her words trailed off as Bolin continued.
"At first… I thought it was because I was your friend… That I felt passion for helping people in general, but… That was only half the story…" He took a deep breath then looked her in her glazed jade eyes. "I felt as if I was obligated to help you… As if I was sent by the Spirits themselves to be there for you…" Suddenly he narrowed his eyes skeptically at her. "Mom… I thought you were gone…" He said, his voice cracking.
"Bolin, I'm not your mother!" She said as she cupped his jaw with both hands and forced him to look at her. "Bolin, look at me!" She exclaimed. "I'm your friend, Asami Sato!"
He looked into her eyes, his still narrowed. "Asami? Asami, I… I love you, Asami…" He whispered.
She tackled him with a tight hug then kissed him on the lips, which were dry and chapped. "Oh, Spirits, Bolin!" She cried and sobbed as tears burst out her eyes and ran down her cheeks. "I love you, too!"
"I'm here… I'm here for you… Always." He pried out in his weak state as he hugged her as tight as he possibly could.
Mako watched this and smiled. I knew Bolin was good at keeping it on the down low, but I didn't know he was great at keeping his crush a secret. He thought to himself.
"Mako!" Korra screamed from behind them.
"Korra!" Mako abruptly turned and grabbed her hand.
She looked at him, eyes wide and brow cringed in fright. "MAKO! NO, DON'T TAKE HIS BENDING! MAAAKOOOOOO!" She screamed; she kicked and punched the air, fighting nothing.
Mako got on the bed and pinned her down, stopping her movement. She screamed and yelled as he tried to calm her down. "KORRA! KORRA, I'M RIGHT HERE! I'M FINE! I HAVE MY BENDING! NO ONE'S HURTING ME!"
She stopped screaming and struggling then looked up at him. "But… He took my bending…" A tear escaped her eye and fell down the side of her face.
Mako quickly sat her up and hugged her, rubbing her back as she sobbed. "Shhh. It's alright, Korra. You still have your bending and so do I. Nothing is wrong…" He said as he continued to comfort her.
But that was a lie. Something is wrong and he just wanted her, and his brother, to get through this without a scratch.
What a relief that'd be.
Hope you liked the chapter, and sorry for grammar mistakes. I didn't feel like fixing them.
