Chapter 11
Secrets
Wilson was in a trance watching the beast, which was now tarring apart the Moose/Goose, Wilson knew he was shivering on the spot, what had happened to his friend, why was she like this? It was his curse not hers so why? He must have been in a trance for a while because he felt someone shaking his arm.
"Mr Wilson what's happened to Whisper?" a voice said, it took a lot of force to turn his head to see who it was, Wendy was looking at him with terror in hr eyes, that was enough to make him snap out of it.
"I don't know," he said, he looked back at what was once Whisper, it was eating the Moose/Goose, luckily it hadn't noticed them yet since it was occupied, Wilson slowly got up, it was weird seeing her in this form, he had only seen this beast once before, and that was when he had first changed.
He had been lost in thought until he head the growls, he looked up and saw the beast staring at them, it's blood red eyes hungry for more flesh, Wilson could feel Wendy grab his arm tightly.
Together they slowly walked backwards, he only hoped they could run away fast enough,
"Miss Whisper please snap out of it," Wendy said in a quiet voice barely noticeable, she was on the verge of tears, the only response she got was the beast showing its teeth in a grin, Wilson now knew this was no longer the Whisper they knew, no matter what form she had been in she would never hurt her friends.
"Wendy we have to run," he said calmly and slowly, with every word he took another step back,
"But Whisper," she said following,
"This isn't her anymore, if we don't leave right now we'll end up like the Moose/Goose," Wilson told her, he took a look at the remains of the Moose/Goose, it wasn't a pretty sight.
After a couple more steps, Wilson felt something with his foot, looking down he saw it was a stone, this gave him an idea, staying still for a few moments he quickly kicked it behind the beast making it hit a tree and cause a noise, when the beast head turned round to inveterate, Wilson took that one second to make their escape.
Grabbing Wendy's hand tight they ran for their lives.
Dashing through the trees was difficult, and trying to trip was even harder, but Wilson was too scared to care and he had a little girl to protect as well, all that was on his mind was survival at this point.
When they left the forest they entered the grasslands, this was the place where they all went their separate ways and as the place where they found Wes he waved and smiled at them but that smile vanished when he saw them running towards them.
"Get moving!" Wilson shouted, at that exact moment the beast busted through the trees and landed just a few meters away from them.
Wendy tripped and looked back and froze in place, Wilson stopped to try and help Wendy but was scared, he looked at Wes, he hadn't moved a single centimetre and looked completely fine, Wes the one who was scared at almost everything didn't seemed fazed at all by the big black hideous creature. In fact he just smiled and looked at it, Wilson just shook his head and grabbed Wendy by the shoulders to help her up, when she was on her feet again he prepare to run, but he could see Wes's head shake,
"We need to move Wes," he said calmly, Wes shook his head again and pointed at the creature, "It's a monster Wes," he added, Wes rolled his eyes, and started to walk to the beast, Wilson was about to grab him but he noticed the beast sitting down and looking at him as he moved closer.
Whisper may have become angry at the death of her pet and allowed the beast to take control to kill the monster, through it all the beast had control of everything, her mind, her body everything, the hound had been nothing but a pet but it was still something special to her, he had protected her, and she couldn't even save him.
When the beast had, had its fill with the Moose/Goose and revenge, Whisper had been able to see again, she was still in beast form but she didn't mind this time, when she looked back at Wilson and Wendy they looked terrified, which wasn't a surprise, she wanted to talk to them but growls were all that left her mouth.
She then watched them run away, she shouted 'wait' but soon stopped, it would only scare them even more and that was the last thing she wanted, she ran after them, if only there was a way for her to tell them they were safe and that she wasn't going to hurt them.
When she got out of the forest she could see Wendy trip over, Wilson tried to help her up, it was then that Whisper had noticed Wes standing near them, at least he wouldn't run away.
Whisper then saw something weird around Wendy and Wilson, it was like a strange yellow mist surrounding them, she had never seen this before even when she had been the beast. When she did notice it however the beast became hungry again and began to try and take control, she fought back, it had already eaten so she wasn't going to let it go.
She was doing well pushing the beast to the back of her mind, "It's a monster Wes," she then heard her head shot up and she knew it was Wilson, out of the two there was more yellow surrounding him, he was the most scared. That one sentence had done something to Whisper, these were the three people she could trust, the three that had excepted the fact she could change into monsters, they didn't care, and now one of them was so terrified they had forgotten that she was still her.
It was almost like having a knife stab her in the heart, and this was just what the beast needed for it to take control again, taken this small chance it ran towards the Wilson and Wendy.
Wes noticed Whisper running with hunger in her eyes, this wasn't her he thought to himself, the beast had taken control and was going to kill if he didn't do anything.
"We have to go Wes hurry," Wilson said, Wes looked at him, he was surprised that Wilson was acting like this, but then again, he out of everyone had the right to fear this monster, it was inside him too after all.
Wes ran in front of the beast just before it reached them, it came to a sudden stop and looked Wes right it the eyes, this had happened before but this time Wes wasn't frightened, he was clam and just wanted to get Whisper back.
Nothing happened and Wes put out his hand, the beast sniffed it, this human didn't smell like the others, he wasn't scared of it, the beast found this boring and just licked the hand in front of it, the hand then started stroking it. The beats looked at the other two again, if it let them live then it would be submitting to the human half like last time, it had to make sure that the human knew it was boss. But with a shake of the head the beats decided to let them live after all the last meal had completely fill the belly.
When Wes was stroking the beast I sat like an obedient animal, see this made Wendy calm down and she took a few little steps towards it, she held out her hand which was shaking like a leaf, there was a small growl which came from the beast, Wendy snapped her hand back, Wes stood next to her and showed her to but her hand out straight and not to shake, she tried again and this time the beast just put its head to her hand. After a minute Wendy got the bravery to stroke it slowly, a small smile came to her face,
"I knew Miss Whisper wouldn't hurt us," she said, Wilson still hadn't moved, he was still scared,
"How did this happen?" he asked aloud, he didn't mean to do this, all three looked at him, he coughed, "I mean she has to see the monster before…" he stopped mid-sentence, his breathing increased, "Wes you've seen her like this before?" he asked, Wes nodded his head with a smile, "Was it a full moon?" he added putting all the pieces together, Wes again nodded.
Wilson put his hands to his head, why didn't he think of this the moment he saw her change, it was his curse and he thought he was the only one; he had been taking the potion which prolonged the effects and kept him human. But there had been a time in which he had changed, only once but it was enough.
He looked up at Whisper now, calmly sitting next to Wes looking back at him, he couldn't look at her for long not knowing it was all his fault.
An idea then came to his head, the potion, maybe that would help her, luckily he always had a small amount on him for safety measures, in his backpack was a tiny vile filled with the liquid, he slowly walked up to the beast, no… Whisper.
"Whisper, if you drink this you might be able to return to your human self," he said calmly, all he got in return was a small grunt, did she understand human speech? Wilson wondered, he would have to ask later, but right now he had to give her this potion, and that would mean getting close to her mouth, and that would also mean getting close to the sharp teeth that could rip through skin. Even if it was Whisper he wasn't going anywhere close to them, he thought for a few seconds and clicked his fingers when he thought of something, rushing back to his bag he looked through it but couldn't find any meat.
"Any of you have a morsel?" he asked looking at Wes and Wendy, Wes shook his head and held out a handful of berries, "No it has to be a meat of sorts," Wilson added, he didn't think the beast version of Whisper would eat anything but meat, it didn't look like an omnivore.
He looked at Wendy, "Did you get any rabbit's?" he asked, Wendy's eyes opened wide,
"No," she said hiding behind Wes, Wilson could tell she was lying,
"Wendy please, this is to help Whisper, Wilson said holding out his hand,
"But I need Mr rabbit," she said in a small voice, she then looked at Whisper, "But I want to help Miss Whisper," she added, she took a few second to think about which would be better, a moment later she dropped her bag to the floor and grabbed the live rabbit that had been hiding inside of it. "But Miss Whisper will be able to help me find more," she said holding out the rabbit by the ears, Wilson took it from her,
"Good girl," he said with a smile, we quickly turned her round when Wilson killed the small furry animal, this world was harsh and crazy but at least getting meat from animals was less messy.
When he had the morsel in his hand he poured the potion on it and allowed it to soak in, this was going to be the only chance he had since the rest was back at camp, bring Whisper back like this would cause too many problems.
He slowly walked back up to Whisper, "Here have something to eat," he said holding out the morsel with a smile, Whisper sniffed it and then shook her head, Wilson's shoulders slumped, great a picky eater.
Wes then took the morsel from his hand and tried himself, again Whisper sniffed and shook her head again but this time Wes pointed to the food and then to his mouth, after that she seemed to roll her eyes and took the food. Wilson watched as she chewed the morsel quickly and gulped, nothing seemed to happen at first and he thought his plan had failed but then her black skin seem to dull and the beast became shorter, the only odd thing was that Wilson was used to hearing her bones crack and reshape, there was nothing Whisper just simply changed back into being human, when the change was fully complete she inhaled loudly and collapsed to the floor.
Wes rushed to her side and caught her before gently placing her on the ground,
"What did you give me?" she asked almost instantly, her breathing was heavy,
"Just trying something out," Wilson replied, Whisper squinted her eyes at him, was she mad at him? He was only trying to help.
"Yippy Miss Whisper is back," Wendy said hugging Whisper quickly, she flinched at the young girls sudden movements but put her arms round her too, it was good to be human again but something felt off.
Wilson's words were still flowing through her mind, 'It's a monster Wes' those small words hurt her more than any knife could have, and what exactly he given her, she's never been able to transform out of the beast form until it had passed on her own. She then got up, spring may have finally come and the rain stopped but it didn't mean that night never came,
"We better head back now," she said, she took hold of Wendy's hand, "And I'll get you a rabbit late to say thanks," she said to her in a hushed voice, Wendy smiled brightly and hugged her again, there was still pain but it had nulled down greatly. She then felt something in her other hand, looking she saw Wes had taken it and smiled, Whisper returned it and looked back at Wilson, she still hadn't forgiven him, "Hurry up," was all she said turning her head.
Wilson watched as the three walked off without him, he sighed, what had he done now? Shaking his head he picked up his backpack and put it over his shoulders, as he walked guilt hit him hard, Whisper must have had to go through the transformation every full moon on her own, if he remembered correctly the curse hit him many months ago, and that meant many full moons.
He couldn't imagine the pain and suffering she had to go through alone, but at least now he could share his potion with her to stop her changing, that was a good thing right? He quickly realized that him being deep in thought had meant he was now falling behind the others, he quickly ran after them,
"What was it like being a monster Miss Whisper," he heard Wendy say,
"Horrible, I find it very hard to control," Whisper replied, Wilson stayed silent and let them continue, "But I'm finding out new things every time it happens," she added, "Like now I think the beasts main target is those who fear it, and that's why it didn't attack Wes, since he's seen me before," was the last comment she mentioned.
"I promise never to be afraid again Miss Whisper," Wendy said, Whisper chuckled,
"Don't worry Wendy being scared and having fears are what prove we're human," Whisper told her,
"But that wasn't the first time I saw that monster," Wendy said swinging hers and Whisper's arms back and forth, Whisper looked at her quickly, she knew for a fact that whenever she changed there hadn't been another soul in sight except for Wes that one time,
"What do you mean?" she asked,
"Well a while back Mr…" Wendy started but Wilson quickly butted in,
"We better get going, sun's starting to set," he said pushing Wendy forward making her lose her grasp on Whisper. "Please don't say anything," he whispered to her, he didn't want Whisper knowing the truth not yet. She might realize whose fault it was and want revenge, and there was no way he would be able to beat someone who could shift into anything they wanted at will.
Whisper could tell there was something up when Wilson stopped Wendy talking, she was about to walk faster and confront him but Wes didn't let go of her hand, when she looked at him he just shook his head. She listened to him this time, but still watched as Wendy and Wilson walked away, Wendy had aid that she had seen the beast before, and that meant that there was another one, Whisper had been looking for it for a long time.
It had happened a long time ago, a few days after she had drunk her potion she had gone out trying out her new ability, she started off with small things, like hounds, birds and rabbits, she had gotten used to the pain pretty quickly. The smaller things meant that her bone had to shirk quite a bit and whenever she changed back into a human her body ached tremendously. After a day of changing into small things, her body hurt her health was low and she was tiered, Whisper had started to walk to her campsite when she heard a strange noise coming from the right, the sun had already set, and it was dusk meaning that night was just round the corner.
Whisper got her torch out, she was sure she would be able to look before the night came.
This was one thing that Whisper hated about herself, her curiosity, if she heard a noise she had to find out what had caused it, even if it meant that the cause could kill her, but now the potion made situations like this less deadly.
As the noise got louder Whisper became more nervous, there was a strange atmosphere around the area that she had never noticed before, it was then out of the corner of her eye that she notice something move. Swinging her torch in the direction she caught a strange figure, she first thought it was human until she saw it grow and deform, Whisper backed away slowly not wanting to be seen, but of course as she backed up there was a tree right behind her, not knowing she backed right into it causing a thump sound.
The thing she was trying to get away from saw her, Whisper could do nothing but look straight into its red eyes in horror, she never thought there would be something this bad in the world. This was too much for her to handle and she legged it, using the torch as light Whisper didn't care that night had fallen and that everything was pitch black, as long as that thing didn't catch her.
When she was far away enough she used the opportunity to change into a hound, this would mean she could see better in the dark and also be less noticeable, in hound form she had in a cave for the rest of the night hoping to never again see the beast.
It wasn't until the next full moon while she was eating that she realized she had been cursed too, all the animals and creatures he changed into she chose, but this time it was completely different the moment that the full moon reached the sky her body changed on her own. This was when she started fearing what she looked at, the potion had work too well and she had started to regret it.
Whisper felt something shaking her arm, Wes was also waving his hand in front of her face, she blinked a few times and came back to reality, and she must have spaced out for a moment. When she looked up Wendy and Wilson were just looking at her, Whisper then noticed Wilson looking at her oddly, he looked a little nervous, was he still scared of her? If he was then did that mean they were no longer friends? Whisper shook her head, thinking like that would lead to trouble.
"Sorry," she said grabbing Wes's hand again and walking fast, they both walked past Wilson and Wendy, Whisper made sure not to even look at him, Wendy ran after them and grabbed her left hand.
When they had gotten back to the camp things were bad, without the resources they had found they wouldn't be able to live here long. Whisper walked to the fire that had been lit ready for their return and emptied her bag of logs, Wendy did the same next to her, she saw that even though Wendy was only able to catch one rabbit she had been able to get a lot of berries.
The next bag that dropped landed with a loud thump, it was Wilson's,
"These should last us a while," he said, he gathered a few of the materials and took them away, "I swear if I have to make another science machine so soon I'll go mad," he said to himself aloud, Whisper watched as he built the machine, he was pretty quick at it.
Whisper felt something on the top of her head, when she looked up Wes had placed a garland on her head; he then sat next to her,
"Today's been a long day," she said rubbing her eyes, a few seconds later she looked up to the sky, the moon rising up, "I'm not a monster am I Wes?" she asked not looking at him, she felt his arms rap round her, it was just a simple hug but it put his message across. To him she wasn't one.
When Wilson had finished, he step back a moment, the moon was now p so he need to get rest, everyone else had already chosen a spot around the fire to sleep, as he stretched her could see Whisper and Wes talking, well Whisper talking and Wes nodding his head.
He needed to talk to Whisper soon, and calmly tell her about his other form, but at the moment she didn't see too happy with him, even though he didn't know why. He decided he would do it in the morning and give her the night to call off, grabbing the last patch of ground next to the fire he laid on his back and looked up to the sky, this always made him feel calm, watching the stars reminded him of home. They needed to find a way out of here fast.
Wes yawned and stretched, Whisper could tell she had kept him up too long, and told him to go to sleep, he did in an instant, now she had a moment to think Whisper remembered the events of the day.
Learning about the beasts taste for fear was something useful, but the fact she had changed at all was the bad thing, if the changes carried on happening without reason she wouldn't be able to control it. Whisper remembered the hound, why had it attacked like that? Didn't it know it was suicide? She sighed, she missed the little blue furry thing, she smiled remembering how it acted like a dog in the normal world.
Remembering him was a little hard, normal people would think she was stupid but that hound felt like it was a part of her somehow, and now he was gone.
After a moment she sighed and laid on the floor, Wendy and Wilson now knew one of her secrets, and that could be a bad thing, but also good, she didn't know, only time was going to answer her question. Whisper then closed her eyes.
With the camp asleep no one was awake to notice the shadows slowly slither into camp, they gathered into a clump on the ground before rising up into the form of a human, blazing white orbs of light where eyes should be looked around at each party member. They stopped a moment on Whisper, but they weren't her for her this time, this time they had another plan, a way to persuade her more. Threating her didn't seem to do anything; she didn't care for her own life, so they had to think of something else.
They had followed her in secret all day and found her one weakness.
Walking in silent around the camp they found what they were looking for, a bright white smile appeared on the face of the shadowy human, as it looked down on her weakness… Wes.
Sup I'm back and new ideas thank you all for being patient :3 anyway back to writing haha
