The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku ii

Chapter 10 - Forever

Len woke up gasping for air. Something inside him throbbed mercilessly, his stomach turned and struggled with worry. His mind couldn't comprehend it. He knew something was wrong. His fingernails dug into the pale skin of his leg as he tried to understand this feeling.

In the dark of his room, he noticed a piece of paper on the end of the bed. He knelt and leaned to grab it. After he did, he opened it carefully.

That's when Len's nervousness turned into despair.

A tear wrenched out of his eye as he heard that sharp, metallic bang that would never escape him as long as he lived.

He dashed out of bed, not bothering with shoes or safety. His heart pounded like a drum as his terror heightened.

Miku!

Her name echoed through his head and pained his heart. There was no proof, but this discomfort would only be caused by her. This longing to save her, to be there with her forever. Even if it wasn't the Miku he had always known, he...

He reached Miku's room and swung the door open.

Her lifeless body was on the floor, the white dress she had worn that day covered in the red of her blood, the crystal tears still running down her cheeks and the sorrowed smile on her lips. He picked her up in his arms and the tears finally came pouring down, landing on her beautiful skin like rain.

"Miku, wake up! Please don't leave me... I love you. I love you, so don't leave me! Please!" He cried, pain and urgency flavouring his hoarse voice.

He noticed the fragments of her chip scattered along the floor and he knew all hope was lost. It couldn't be the end of Miku. He wouldn't accept it. He clenched his teeth so tightly as to not let his screams of agony be heard. He took her my the hand and clenched it tightly.

"Wake up. Wake up, Miku! Don't you want to have fun again? Why did you do this? Please, we love you! Please wake up!"

But he felt something fall into his hand. Light and delicate, it felt like a frozen butterfly. He took his hand away. In it, was another small microchip. No doubting, it was the original Miku.

"Is this what you wanted?" He whispered, "did you want her to return?"

He hugged her body tightly, letting her head rest on his shoulders.

He gasped for air through the suffocation of his loss, and nodded.

"I'll do it for you, if this was your dying wish."

He pushed the slightly blood-stained chip inside her again, and with a small 'click', the shell was inhabited. He laid her back down on the ground, continuing to hold her hand.

Slowly but surely, she began to awaken. Her dead, black eyes began to fade into that same teal, her wounds began to close, her skin began to brighten. It was happening, but Len couldn't help but worry about what she would wake up as, who she would be?

Her chest began to raise delicately, and fall back down, as her first breaths re-entered her body. Len gripped her hand tightly, the tears still rolling down onto her.

"Len..." she whispered, as her consciousness returned.

A wondrous smile appeared on her face as she said to him, "thank you for saving me..."

Len let out a choked chuckle as he held her in his arms once again.

"Ah... I can't stop crying," she sniffled, "it hurts so much..."

"I'm sorry," Len wept.

"No, it's not your fault. I just feel like a part of me has disappeared. Maybe it's because I was sleeping all this time?"

"What are you talking about?" Len laughed as he wiped away the tears, even though they were wet by more.

"I've missed a fun time, it seems. Since I've been away for so long, right? That missing part of me... It's bitter-sweet. I think they were good memories, but maybe sad ones too..."

"Miku, I don't understand."

"I know," she smiled, stroking Len's cheek, "it's OK."

"I think she just wanted to let you know she was happy she could meet you," Miku continued.

Len paused.

"What's that face? How odd," she laughed.

An emptiness in Len filled again, with those words.

I think she just wanted to let you know she was happy she could meet you.

His tears finally subdued.

"I love you, Miku," he whispered.

"I know! I loved you all this time, too, baka!" She complained, leaning into him, and giving him a sweet and cheeky kiss.

"Hah, you're really back," he grinned.

"You only just realized?" She laughed again.

They joined at the lips, kissing again.

Miku and Len had grown closer after that, and began to date soon after the incident. Miku had recalled all of the memories of her past, including the anguish and lonliness at the time of her death, and the happiness and utopia she felt when Len had saved her. The memories of the "other" Miku resurfaced ocassionally, even though Miku didn't realize it. Len's regret subsided after he remembered the other Miku's gentle words in the note, which he still treasures to this to this day. Gakupo finally proposed to Luka, and Meiko continued to read her questionable books. Rin was more focussed on her career as ever, and gave Len and Miku her blessing. Kaito was perverted as usual, and still had his slight crush on Rin. Yumi was able to recover after the incident, unknown to Miku and Len. She never again interfered with them, nor did she ever let herself tell them the reason for holding Miku captive. But despite that, Miku had been grateful to her old Master, for an odd reason. I wonder what it is?

A/N: Minna-san, I'm an awful person. Throughout 2013, there were plenty of times when I thought about this story. In fact, I had already written the final chapter and was going to upload it mid-2013. But I forgot all about it, and it appears that even now I can't find it. I rewrote it as best as I could, but I wonder if I captured it well. I always thought I was good at writing emotional scenes, but I don't think I am. I tried to make Miku seem like her old self to keep it fresh and not too depressing. The "other" Miku obviously died, and left that "emptiness" in Miku, but cured the emptiness in Len. I wasn't too sure about it, but I'd like to think she's sleeping, like Miku was when the other Miku was active. I wonder if all of this was too complex! My mind works in funny ways.

I was very sad when I updated this. Not because I was sad it was ending or I was sad about the ending, but because I thought I had betrayed you all by being slack. I know it sounds ridiculous, but this saga of FanFiction in my life will forever be in my memories. It was once all I lived for, and all I ever wanted to do. Occassionally, the momokokoro-chan inside me pops her head out sometimes and makes me write. So maybe you'll see me again someday, maybe you won't. But if you're reading this now... Thank you.
