Chapter 11
Parking his truck Matt turned the keys and took them out of the ignition. One quick glance around the nearly empty parking lot told him his shopping companions had not arrived yet. To pass the time he got out his cell phone and checked for messages on it. It was now late March and Gabby was nineteen weeks along; She wasn't feeling all that great before he left and he felt bad only being able to tell her he was going to get things at the scrap construction where house for a job he was doing. Luckily though she seemed to buy it and was resting on the couch with a bowl of soup when he left. Sending her a quick text he saw a van pull up beside him and recognized it immediately.
"Matt!" The van's back door slide open and Eva and Diego got out.
Opening his door and getting out of the truck Matt pulled them into a hug, "Hey guys," He hugged them, "Thanks for coming."
"Dad said that this place has things we can't touch," Diego grinned, "Does it really?"
"Diego," Matt ruffled the young boys dark hair, "You should always believe your father."
"That's right, Antonio stated, "Now two have to behave in there alright. No running around and yelling. You could get seriously hurt and we don't want that."
"Right," Laura confirmed "And we're trusting you two you said you wanted to help find some materials and we're letting you help; if you misbehave we can easily take you home. You both need to decide whether you want to be given privileges like this or not."
"So we're looking for things I can use to make a jewelry box and a rocking chair," He explained as he led the way into the warehouse, "So Eva I was thinking maybe you could look for small pieces of wood and maybe even some stones that I can put on them."
"Cool!" She clapped her hands, "Aunt Gabby's favourite colour is green, maybe we can paint some stones green and use super glue."
"Good idea kiddo."
"Matt?" Diego took his attention away from his older sister, "What do you want me to do?"
"I'm guessing you don't want to help your sister?"
"No."
"Okay well you could help me; I want to see if we can find some pieces of wood; a few different kinds," He pulled out the list from his back pocket and opened it up, "You think you could help me find some wood that looks likes these pieces?"
"Uh-huh," Diego examined the list, "In different colours?"
"Just brown and maybe some black."
"I got it."
"You want the paper to help you?"
"No. I almost have a picture perfect memory. I can see all of the drawings in my mind," The eight year old responded as he began his search.
"Picture perfect memory or not I'll help him," Antonio took the paper and began following his son.
"Wait, before you do I have something I want to discuss with you."
"Yeah sure," Antonio followed him away from the others.
"Babe," Matt called into the faintly lit house, "Baby I'm home," He set his bag at door and took off his coat and shoes. "Ga-" He turned the corner and smiled to himself when he saw Gabby stretched out on the couch fast asleep. She looked so peaceful and he didn't want to wake her but he knew that sleeping on her side wasn't good for her or the babies.
He crouched down and gently caressed her cheek, "Sweetheart wake up."
She mumbled incoherently and blinked her eyes.
"You'll be much more comfortable in bed Gabby," He ran his finger along her jaw line.
"Mattie," She mumbled as she sleepily opened her eyes and looked at him.
"Come on," He stood and offered her his hands, "You're exhausted let's get you to bed."
Gabby didn't argue and she stood up and used his support to walk towards the stairs; but just as she was about to climb them she felt a strong kick and then another one.
"Matt!" She nearly lost her balance as she grabbed his hands.
"Wow, wow," He steadied her.
"Matt! The babies, they're kicking! I just felt them kick!" She exclaimed as she once again took his hands; this time successfully placing them on her stomach "Can you feel them?"
A gigantic grin appeared on his face making Gabby laugh, "I guess you can."
Without warning he spun her around and kissed her on the lips; "That's amazing Gabby," He breathed heavily, "So, so amazing."
"Yeah it is," She rubbed her abdomen with one hand, "Unfortunately though it means I probably won't be able to get back to sleep anytime soon. At least until they start to calm down."
"I remember reading in one of the books a warm bath sometimes helps," He suggested as the made it to the top of the stairs, "It's your choice though."
"A warm bath sounds nice;"
"Okay," He kissed her cheek, "I'll start the bath and you go lay down. I'll come and get you when it's ready."
Too tired to argue Gabby simply nodded her head, "I love you."
"I love you too sweetheart."
With that Matt made his way into the bathroom; only one thing on his mind; the talk he had with Antonio and as he filled the tub with warm water he kept repeating over in his head what he wanted to do. Putting the stopper in the tub he stood and looked at the small and was glad the new house had a whirlpool tub and a separate shower in the master washroom.
Walking into the washroom wearing only a robe Gabby carefully sat on the edge of the tub and dipped her hand into the water, "A little warmer," She leaned forward and turned the hot water tap one way and the cold water tap the other.
"Babe," Matt moaned as he watched her movements.
Making sure the water was perfect Gabby turned both taps off dipped her hands in the water and splashed Matt.
"Gabby," He laughed, "What did you do that for?"
"So I could do this," She mischievously grinned as she took off his t-shirt in one single motion and then undid the tie around the housecoat and climbed into the tub, "You know this would be a lot more fun with you massaging me."
Matt didn't need to be asked twice he stripped and joined her in the tub.
"Matt," Gabby reached behind her and opened the bedside drawer.
"Uhm," Matt mumbled not wanting to be disturbed from his peaceful rest.
After they had finished having their bath they had dried off and gone back to Gabby's bed where they had been laying in each other's arms for who knows how long.
"I think I might be re-thinking the names Simon and Oliver," She bit her lower lip.
"What?" This got Matt's attention and he sat up and looked at her. It's a good thing I haven't started working on the nameplates.
"Yeah I was thinking well…." She handed him the notepad.
"Miguel, Rafael, Javier, Xavier, Santiago, Mateo Jose and Andres," He read the list aloud, "Okay. I'm confused why does it seem like you didn't want me reading this."
"I've had them for awhile. I have one with girls names too." She admitted.
"Gabby baby I'm really confused you're going to have to help me."
"I don't know Matt," She admitted, "I don't know why I didn't show you before but I'm showing you know."
"I like some of them; some of them I've never heard of," He admitted, "But I'm guessing Andres is Spanish for Andrew and Miguel is Spanish for Michael."
"That's right."
Matt looked down at the notepad again, it had crossed his mind more then once to name one of the babies after Andy but it didn't seem right to use it as a first name. "You know maybe we could us that for a middle name."
Gabby leaned over and kissed him on the lips breaking apart she said, "I miss him too."
Matt pulled her closer towards his body and caressed her abdomen, "What names do you like the best?"
"Javier; that's my favourite and then maybe Mateo and Rafael."
"I like Javier; but…. I don't like the name Mateo sorry."
"Okay but you only get two veto's," She took a pen from the bedside table and crossed the name off the list.
"Oh really?" He pulled her hair away from her neck and kissed it.
"Yeah so one more veto," She nodded, "Then we pool all the names that are left with Simon and Oliver and pick four we like the best."
"Four?" Matt pulled away in shock.
"First and middle names!" She laughed.
"Right I knew that."
"Uh-huh. You were stunned Matt."
"Uh-huh," He held her closer inhaling her scent, "I love your laugh."
She blushed and became lump in his arms; her need for him growing. "Matt," She turned her head to look at him, "I think names can wait." She tossed the notepad and pen back on the table as pulled him into a deep, meaningful kiss.
"Simon, Oliver, Andres, Javier, Miguel, Rafael, Santiago and Xavier." Matt read off the list of names they had narrowed it down to. "So we pick four names and leave four." He ripped the notepad off and started another one, "It might be easy of we see what sounds good together."
Gabby looked up from the cookbook she was examining, "Is this your way of asking me which last name they're going to have?"
"Well…"
She closed the cookbook and put it on the counter before coming to sit beside him at the kitchen table, "I want our babies to have their father's last name. Whether or not we never get married or we do get married."
Matt leaned forward and kissed her, "I want us to get married Gabby; but when you're ready. I don't care how many years that takes."
"After the babies are born; then we'll talk about it."
"Deal," He took her hands and looked back at the list, "How about Simon Andres Casey?"
"Hum, maybe," She rubbed her chin as she began to write all of the names in different combinations. "So I really like Simon Andres so I'm going to highlight it," She used a green highlighter, "And then," She used the pen and crossed out all name combinations that had Andres as a first name.
"What about…"
After over an hour of narrowing down all possible names they settled on Javier Andres Casey and Rafael Oliver Casey.
Seeing that it was almost six thirty Matt stood up, "You and the boys go and rest and I'll cook some dinner alright."
"I'm not going to argue there," Gabby stood and as she did the boys starting moving around inside of her and she lit up smiling, "Matt feel this," She urged, "They're moving and doing flips."
Feeling her stomach Matt moved his hands around until he could feel the movement of his unborn sons, "Hi Javier and Rafael," He cooed and the movement only got faster and he felt two sharp kicks.
"I think they agree on the names," Gabby rubbed her thumb over her growing stomach. "It's amazing they can hear us."
"Yeah it is," Matt agreed.
