My eyes open to nothing but darkness,
One light, then another, glowing eyes staring at me with hunger, a row of sharp teeth that also glinted maliciously. A third glow in the darkness, and I can see a hand reaching out, a hand that seemed to be made of mist, a familiar shape, a hand I have seen before, but the image is only there for a moment and the hand becomes mist once more; holding a small and tattered soul, a soul with small angel wings that fluttered feebly.
"She waits for you."
Hisses a voice that changes almost as much as the hand, It makes me shake. The voice is like barbs, like a sharp shapeless mass, hard to hold on to. I try to catch it, but what I do hear fills me with dread. But Why?
I try to speak, but I have nothing, no mouth to form words, no voice to make myself heard, and the voice continues
"And I wait as well…"
As the last words echo, I hear something else, a small voice calling to me. Another shard of soul traveling to me in the sea of darkness, the darkness that clips the angel wings and makes her fade.
I reach desperately, but I have no hands with which to grasp.
The sharp smile widens, then fades, as the pair of staring eyes also closes, to be replaced by thousands; small glowing red eyes, like rats, all of them swarm, and take me under.
I hold on to the small fragment, the bit of light, as the rats tare my presence apart.
-.-
My eyes jerk open, and I'm faced with another pair of eyes, another wicked grin.
The Little Demon takes a step back, still with that mad smile and spoke.
"Well, it seems as though someone has had an interesting day, how about we get onto business shall we?" He turned away from me, and it almost looked as though he were blurring at the edges. I shook my head, and noticed that there was no pain when I did so. I stared blankly at him and he smiled even more broadly.
"Ah, of course," Said the Little Demon, "The black blood is currently taking the brunt of your psychic assault, but it won't hold for long." I noticed as he said this that his voice sounded sort of staticky. His smile faded a little and he looked serious. "This also means however, that the black blood in your soul is also in danger of being destroyed.
"So?" I asked, only half interested in what the little demon had to say.
I saw it clearly, as if I were there, and someone had her soul right within reach. And it had spoken, spoken to me.
The demon snapped his fingers impatiently in front of my eyes. "Artn't you listening to me? The black blood is as much a part of your soul as the bond with your meister, it's one of the only other things holding it together, and if it were to fall apart…" he stopped, and I watched as his horns seemed to sag a little, but it wasn't just that, the little demon's whole face was sagging like melting wax.
I jerked back in my seat, looking down at my hands and watched as they too seemed to melt in and out of focus. I felt the pressure, the feeling of my mind stretching at the seams. I had to get a hold of myself, to keep control. I clenched my fists forcing my mind to settle and hold together. I brought up every bit of mental discipline I had and the room slowly came back into focus.
I sagged again, sighing.
"You see now why we need to get this mess straightened out." said the little demon, adjusting his suit and looking straight at me. "First thing's first, we need to get to work on solving this little mystery of yours. Perhaps you could tell me what you saw?"
"A midget in a Halloween mask?" I said, "Or maybe an idiot in a monkey suite… or how about, none of your Death damned business!"
"Hmf, no one likes a smart ass, kid."Said the demon, scowling. "You know as well as I do that I can't see every thought in your head, no matter how tempting the prospect. No, that little nap you took was more than that. Perhaps you didn't notice, but the black blood offers more than just power, but also knowledge. Things about which most mortals, -even the ones who deal in souls,- refuse to believe."
"It was nothing-" I started to say but the demon cut me off with an impatient hand gesture
"Don't play dumb Soul." He said, starting to walk around the room. "Maybe you were able to hide from your friends with that pathetic excuse but you can't hide this from yourself, from me."
"I don't' get it, what are you planning? You spend half your time trying to convince me to take your stupid deal and all of a sudden you're trying to offer to help just like that? Tell me what it is you want? What's in it for you?"
I heard his footsteps stop behind me, "Why so suspicious? Ah, but you're not as dumb as you look. Perhaps it's in my best interest to help you. Maybe I don't just want to sit here quietly and die. Self-preservation is a strong reason after all."
I snorted, not bothering to glance behind me where the demon was still standing. "Uh huh, that can't be all."
"No, perhaps not, but is that a risk you're willing to take? Wouldn't you be willing to pay any price to save your sweet little meister?"
"Look I already told you I won't-"
Dimly, I could hear voices, outside the door of the apartment.
And he smiled wickedly as I jerked back in shock
"Seems like I'm not the only one who's going to have his motives questioned," he said in a mocking tone. "You're going to look very suspicious sneaking around the scene of a crime, Make your choice now Soul, show me."
"What's your game?" I asked, "We don't have time to-"
"Oh, I wouldn't say that," Said the demon, "You see nothing is faster than thought, so you might say, we have all the time in the world."
"Fine," I growled.
"Of course, we're going to need considerably more time than that to sort this over but that can be arranged, now I'm also going to need that pretty little star you have in your hands."
"What-" and I look down to see the tiny shard of soul, like a little feather. It was tattered and rough but somehow heavy, it must be something really important.
"You can't have-" I started but the demon chuckled, somehow even more darkly and sinisterly than usual, and I felt as though my head were about to split.
The pain was blinding, and I felt myself slip sideways, onto the floor, coughing and shivering. "Can't have you making things more difficult than they have to be." Said the little demon "So I'm going to have to let you go for a second." My eyes were clouded by a black haze and my ears with static, and I dimly saw the squat form of the demon over me.
"Let's see now…" he said, "I'll take that,"
I tried to clench my hand closed, but he pried it open with surprising strength and I saw something sparkling in his hand.
"Such a sweet little memory, ah but hiding more than it looks. Quite typical of your meister isn't it." He said mockingly. And I could only sit there and watch in horror as he swallowed the bit of Maka's soul.
The demon grinned triumphantly, clearly savoring the taste of my meister's soul. Looking down with a gloating expression; I could see his form becoming clearer even while my own vision blurred even further with pain and fury.
"I- I'll KILL YOU!" I screamed in my mind.
"Hmm yes…" said the little demon lazily "But please do try not to get yourself killed first."
Darkness began to eat at the edges of my vision and also wrap around the demon… the power of my meister's memory being unleashed within the black blood.
The demon waved his hand, and I felt myself rush back into darkness, seeing the door of the black room slam shut and hearing the door of the apartment open.
Finally got this done and I'm also in the middle of the next chapter.
