Sorry i forgot to update last weekend. I was on vacation.
Chapter 11
"I thought you said you couldn't come here," Stephen gawked when I teleported into the base. "Isn't Jedikiah tracking you?"
Technically, I was pretty sure it was the DOD tracking me, but that probably wouldn't make him feel better. "It's not like he doesn't know where you are already," I reminded him with a shrug. "And Jedikiah said he didn't mind me coming here. He actually wants me here. Thinks that if you all see how happy I am you'll come and work for him I guess."
"Yeah, I guess," Stephen sighed. "Well welcome to the lair Kaia. It used to be Ultra's base but when the Founder died and Jedikiah started his new project we took over. Feel free to look around…you're always welcome here."
AKA Please stop working for you possibly psychopathic father and come live in a colony of your kind like a sane person.
"Kaia!" Charlie cried running down a set of stairs. "Are you moving in? We have plenty of rooms but you can share with me!"
It was a nice offer, but not one I'd hopefully ever have to take up. "Thanks Charlie but I'm only visiting."
"To bad," she said though Charlie didn't look very upset. "Well you're here so you should come meet your sister. She's really cute."
I hadn't even thought about it, but she was my half sister. Plus I kind of wanted to have a conversation with this Morgan who was one of the few people I knew Jedikiah loved. "Lead the way," I told her with a grin.
It was easy to see where the inspiration for the Institute came from. White walls and glass offices weren't an unusual sight to see in a lab, but the two places had the same feel. I couldn't help but wonder if Jedikiah missed this place…or if he never wanted to see it again.
"Morgan, are you in there?" Charlie asked rasping on one of the few solid doors. Without waiting for a response the girl opened the door and revealed a little nursery complete with pink walls and all. (Pink walls that I'd bet my life Charlie painted herself.)
"Hey, Charlie, who's this?" Morgan asked rocking a bundle that must have been June.
Charlie opened her mouth to explain, but I figured I should be the one to say it. "My name's Kaia…I'm Jedikiah's daughter."
It stung when I noticed Morgan shift so June was farther away from me, but I quickly realized it wasn't a conscious action. As someone with no maternal instinct what-so-ever I didn't understand that, yet I found myself wishing I could. "Charlie told me about you," Morgan finally answered with sigh. "I didn't expect to meet you so soon."
"I hadn't planned on coming at all but…" How did I explain what I was feeling? Jedikiah had been nothing but kind to me, yet I couldn't let myself trust him. How could I when I knew what he'd done. "I guess I just wanted to meet the one person I was related to who wasn't messed up yet," I choked realizing I was on the brink of tears.
Morgan noticed. "Charlie, would you mind giving us a minute?" the new mother asked placing a sleeping June in her crib. Charlie didn't seem to understand, but she was amiable enough to go shutting the door behind her. For a split second, I thought Morgan was going to come and attack me, but instead she gave me a hug.
And I let myself break down. She wasn't my mother, by God I had plenty of those already, but she understood what it felt like to be me. Morgan knew what it was like to feel love for someone who should be the enemy. She knew what it was like for that person to be Jedikiah.
"He's not a bad guy," Morgan promised me once I finally choked down my anxious sobs. "Jedikiah's ambitious and driven, but he's not a bad man. He's the father of my child…and I still love him. It's okay to love him."
If he was such a good man then why was Morgan with the Tomorrow People instead of him?
As if she was reading my mind (and knowing us maybe she was) Morgan spoke softly, "I didn't want June to be raised around that. No matter how much Jedikiah loved her, loved his daughter, she'd always just end up being another test subject. But you know that better than most."
Yes, yes I did, but hearing her put it into words made me feel better. Jedikiah could love both his work and me but in the end, I'd always be a part of that work. If the interests of the two clashed… Well I wouldn't know what he'd do until it was too late.
"Come on, why don't you hold June," Morgan suggested with a smile. "She always makes me feel better…it's a gift."
Yeah. Innocent creatures tend to do that. I mused forcing a smile. "Sounds nice."
Morgan picked the little girl up from the crib, and I couldn't help but be surprised she wasn't crying. Wasn't that all infants were supposed to do? Eat, sleep, poop, and cry? Lots and lots of crying?
The moment Morgan lay her in my arms I understood the silence, and I understood that it wasn't just June's innocence that made her so appealing. The girl was taking away bad energy, just like Jedikiah predicted I could, but instead of feeling it herself…A baby who could end hatred with a touch.
"She's beautiful," I told Morgan trying not to let my panic show. "I better go. My mom will be worried."
Lucky for me, Morgan misinterpreted my haste. "If you ever need to talk…about him or anything. Well you're my daughter's sister. Come by whenever you want."
I nodded, but it was a lie. I wasn't so sure if getting to know more of my family would be a good idea. "Of course. Bye Morgan…bye June."
The baby let out a little caw, almost as if she was missing her sister already.
"Miss Price, it's a bit late for you to be here. Your father's already left," one of the guards, a Sergeant Bent, told me when I teleported into Jedikiah's office.
"I just need to look at something," I told him stepping to the side to pass him, but Sergeant Bent grabbed my arm.
"I'm sorry, but you can do that tomorrow. I'm sure you're a nice girl, but it's almost midnight. Go home. I bet you have school tomorrow," he prompted eyes unwavering. I wondered if it was because of my age or because I was a paranormal, but I got the impression he was only polite to me because of my dad.
Still, I could use my dad as an advantage, "Look. My dad sent me here to look at something, and I'm going to look at it."
Sergeant Bent narrowed his eyes as if trying to read my mind. Unfortunately for him, I was the Tomorrow Person, not him. Eventually he let my arm go, probably afraid of getting in trouble with the boss, and I darted into one of the labs.
I understood now why Jedikiah wanted me on this project. I might just be a kid, but I knew about science. John said they needed my computer skills, but that was a lie. They needed someone who could pluck a hair from their head and get to work.
Sergeant Bent must have though I teleported out because it was Jedikiah who found me the next morning. "Kaia? You're supposed to be at school."
School. Who could think of school at a time like this? "I know, but I found something. Look."
Jedikiah looked like he was going to father out on me, but he gazed in the microscope first. "Whose sample is this?" he quickly asked adjusting the scope.
"Mine," I whispered shivering. "But I think we'd find it in others as well… all E2's."
Jedikiah shook your head, "You're E3, not E2… A third generation Tomorrow Person…" Silence covered the lab for a moment before Jedikiah tossed the slide in a bag. "I want to see if it happens in E2's as well. Do you think you can get me a sample of Stephen and your mother?"
Oh, he meant Eve. I was hoping I could wait a bit more before seeing her again. Still, I needed to know. If what was happening to me and June was happening to others as well…
"I'll see what I can do," I told Jedikiah fighting back a yawn. "But I'm right, aren't I?"
Unfortunately, he nodded, "It explains why you have a harder time controlling your powers. Stephen did as well. Your proteins are going through a phase shift."
I considered asking if it was something I should be worried about, but I realized he wouldn't know. Your genes aren't supposed to change, but for some reason mine were.
