Xannytoes: *Appears in a flash of bright, white lightening* WE'RE ALIVE!
deathwhisper7: Wait, who said WE? I thought I was the only one still alive-/SLAPPED/
Xannytoes: I beg your pardon missy? I was perfectly fine till one of your cookie rampages put me in hospital!
deathwhisper7: I was deprived of cookies, I just had to get some more! It's hard maintaining drawing and school and instruments and COOKIE STOCKS so I needed more * ^ *
Xannytoes: Well hello everyone! First, let me apologise from the bottom of my black heart about the delays in updating. I blame Death.
deathwhisper7: It was actually my fault tho
Xannytoes: I'm kidding. It was both our faults. We'd like to welcome you back... if any of you are still alive.
deathwhisper7: Oh, I think I kill them tho..in my cookie rampage!~ Oopsydaisy keke
Xannytoes: Right... When we last left our heroes, there was more shippiness and introductions to some of your own characters. In our latest chapter, Ash is about to face off against Trip and oh gawsh I've gotten bad at these.
deathwhisper7: /pats your shoulder/ It's fine, I'm bad at summaries too ; v ;
Xannytoes: Anyways, enjoy the story!
deathwhisper7: And watch out for my cookie rampages!~
Applause and screaming combined together as a welcoming cheer for the young trainer. Ash hardly took notice, his eyes fixed to the ground. A nerve-wrecking fear had settled back into his mind, threatening to scatter his confidence. Strategies battled in his head, each one attempting to prove that it was better than the other. If Trip does that, then I'll counter with this, then bring in this one, and use that move, then-no wait, I should do that instead…
While his conflicting thoughts wrestled, Ash was almost oblivious to the calm and smug-faced of Trip, strutting into the arena like it was a normal Sunday morning walk in the park. Despite his embarrassment at the Halfway Ceremony, he pulled together a bold air, one which appealed to the crowds.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Pikachu and Wynaut, let the second half of the tournament commence!" the announcer announced. All around, the audience roared with approval as if they hadn't been waiting for three months.
Xan's note: Round of applause for Death, for breaking the 4th wall for the first time!
"On the left side, we have the Bane of the Regions, with his stylish cap and hairdo-that-looks-like-he-woke-up-on-the-wrong-side-the-bed, Ash Ketchup-I mean, Ash Ketchum, and his sidekick, Picklechu-ah, Pikachu!"
In the legions of screaming fanboys and fangirls, a certain ten-year-old was facepalming. "Is it just me," Max muttered to Brock, "or is the commentator's quality going downhill?" Brock nodded in agreement, stuffing his face with popcorn.
"And on the right is the Bulldozer of Unova, one of the competition's fiercest opponents… when he's not falling over," Ash's rival waved at the crowds all around him, ears turned away from the announcer's voice, "Trip Schumaker!" At the sound of his name, he took a bow, springing up with a grin.
"This will be a six-on-six battle between Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town and Trip Schumaker from Nuvema Town," the referee said. "Trainers, send out your Pokémon!"
Ash and Trip locked eyes, waiting for the other to make a move. A silent tension was felt in the stadium, its presence resonating. I have to beat him! Ash vowed.
"Conkeldurr, show him your strength!" Trip declared, tossing his Pokéball and bringing forth his Pokémon in a blaze of white light. The creature that emerged was short, though its stocky brown and pink skin bulged with muscles. Its red nose flared with frustration, and it wielded a broken stone cylinder in both hands.
"Trip starts off with Conkeldurr, the powerhouse of his team! How will Ash counter?"
With this. Ash unclipped the ball from his belt and tossed it into the air.
"Donphan, I choose you!"
Rising to meet Conkeldurr was something akin to a miniature elephant. A beast sheltered in armour, with tusks that bounced the sunlight across the field. It was streaked in grey, and upon spotting its foe, reared its head and let loose a cry that would tremble even the most powerful of Pokémon.
"DOOOOONPHAN!"
"And my word, Ash has released his Donphan! This Ground type is certainly an interesting opponent for Trip's Fighting type. The question is, which Pokémon will come out on top?"
"BEGIN!" the referee swung his flags.
"Donphan, use Rollout!" Ash ordered. I haven't ever lost to Trip's Conkeldurr, and that certainly won't change today. With Donphan's speed, he should be able to get in close and take an early lead.
"Donphan!" The Armour Pokémon lept forward, curling up and surging forward at an incredible speed upon hitting the ground. The black blur that was Donphan quickly diminished the distance between the battlers.
And yet, despite the impending strike, Ash found himself staring at a calm and peaceful Trip. His Pokémon imitated its trainer's feelings, relaxing its shoulders in a casual manner as Donphan closed in…
What is he doing? Does Trip want me to hit Conkeldurr… oh no!
"Donphan, turn left!" Ash cried out, Trip grinning in response to the outburst.
"Trap him Conkeldurr!"
As the Armour Pokémon attempted to swing out of harms way, Conkeldurr dived in front of the rolling Donphan. The Muscular Pokémon swung his pillars, slamming them into Donphan's sides and stopping the elephant-like creature dead in its tracks.
"Break free Donphan," Ash ran through the tactics he'd prepared, yet he had nothing to use against this unorthodox move. He watched as Donphan struggled and squirmed, attempting to slash at Conkeldurr with its tusks. A futile effort, as Donphan's opponent began putting pressure on the pillars, crushing the Pokémon trapped between them.
"No! Call him off Trip!" Even from this distance, the cries of pain tore at Ash's ears and wrecked the boy with fury. What kind of underhanded tactic was this, making your rival's Pokémon suffer to attain victory? Trip's smug smile only added fuel to the flames, and for a moment Ash considered dropping his Pokéballs and settling the conflict in a different manner…
"Give in and I'll let him go," Trip offered, Conkeldurr seemingly upping the pressure on his prey. Like the creature actually enjoyed the pain it inflicted. Time to return the favour.
"Not a chance," Ash clenched his fist and brought his arm forward in a swiping motion, pointing at the two battlers, "Donphan, use Knock Off!"
Somewhere amid the shrieks, Donphan could hear its trainers orders. With a vengeful grin and an incredible shower of strength, the Armour Pokémon brought the side of his tusks into one of Conkeldurr's arms. It howled, dropping its pillar and collapsing to one knee. Free of its tortuous prison, Donphan didn't even need a second command, crashing into Conkeldurr with a tremendous tackle.
"And just when things look bad, Ash retaliates with an on-the-spot combo!"
For some strange, inexplicable reason, Trip didn't look as smug as he did a few seconds prior. Ash took the chance to flash a grin of his own. The Unova teen resembled a statue of sorts, mouth agape and staring endlessly at the shifting world and the pedestrians who walked by. With a shake of his head, he broke free of his stone form and cried out once again.
"Conkeldurr, use Stone Edge!"
Trip's Pokémon lifted its concrete weapon, bringing it down with an almighty crunch. The ground below splintered and fractured, tossing stone and rock in all directions. A great surge of granite erupted towards Donphan, as Trip and Conkeldurr watched on with flaring eyes.
"Donphan, Defense Curl!"
Donphan leaned forward, pointing its forehead towards the oncoming storm. A green shield covered the creature's body, shattering every stone that came into contact with it. Where there had once been fire and passion, Trip's eyes only showed bewilderment.
"How did you do that?" Trip stomped upon the ground like an angry child, "Stone Edge is my Conkeldurr's signature attack. There's no way a pitiful move like Defense Curl could have stopped him!"
"Looks like my attack did more than you realised, Trip," said Ash, pointing to Conkeldurr.
The Muscular Pokémon had been marked by Donphan's assault, leaving him in a state of fatigue. Not only that, but one of Conkeldurr's pillars was missing.
"And where the heck did that go?" demanded Trip, kicking out at the dirt and searching for the lost concrete.
"When you had Donphan pinned, I had him use Knock Off," Ash explained, "Normally it's used to get rid of items like berries and such. I figured I could use it not only to throw Conkeldurr off, but to get rid of one of those pillars as well."
Trip growled, grabbing a Pokéball from his belt.
"Conkeldurr, return."
"And after suffering some serious damage at the hands, err, tusks of Donphan, Trip's making a switch. Just what will he use?"
"Vanilluxe, let's show him true power!"
If ever there was a Pokémon you wanted to eat, Vanilluxe would be your first choice. A two headed being composed of ice and cream, it floated around grinning and giggling. A wafer-like object poked out of one of its heads, emitting a thin, blue smoke stream.
"Alright Trip, ready to lose?" Ash asked. He expected a challenge or some sort of verbal comeback, so Ash was somewhat surprised when Trip started laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"Oh nothing, it's just you got one lucky move and all of a sudden you're acting like a member of the Elite Four."
"And what's that supposed to mean?" What was Trip attempting to do here? If he thought he was going to defeat Ash with a few degrading insults, the Pallet Town trainer was going to show him wrong.
"You got lucky in all your battles," Trip shook his head, "So what if you knocked Conkeldurr around a bit? One attack isn't going to make this battle, only skill. And guess what Ketchum? You've got none. I'm surprised you even found the courage to challenge me. Or is it because fear doesn't register in that thick skull of yours?"
Harming Donphan with the intention of causing as much pain as possible was one thing, but now Trip was spewing insults and degrading remarks. He was hardly Ash's best friend, but this was a level below rivals. This was acting like a veritable bully. At least the crowds were on Ash's side, booing the Unova trainer.
"Like I care what you lot think, you'll be cheering me on when I'm done with this pathetic loser!"
"Like heck," Ash struck a dramatic anime pose, "Donphan, hit Vanilluxe with Rollout!"
Donphan once again curled up into his ball form, rushing to meet his new foe. Colliding with the rubble left behind by Conkeldurr, Donphan was launched like a skateboard on a ramp. Trip was so caught up in his furious tirade, Vanilluxe was at the mercy of the Johto Pokémon.
"Vanille!" the floating ice cream was dashed against the arena floor. It quickly recovered, dirt now coating its frosty body.
"What was that Trip?" Ash cupped a hand over his ear, laughing.
"ICE BEAM!"
Vanilluxe opened its twin mouths, letting loose a gush of chilling ice.
"Defense Curl, Donphan!"
Again, Donphan assumed a defensive stance to protect itself against the hallowed winds. A cascade of frozen crystals buried the surface under a clear, slippery coating. Yet for whatever reason, Vanilluxe's beam never came close to striking the Armour Pokémon. Instead, the Snowstorm Pokémon formed a circle of sorts around itself.
Ash didn't understand. Had he somehow confused Vanilluxe with his previous attack? Was wasn't Trip ordering his fighter to attack Donphan?
"Donphan, use Tackle!"
Ever obedient, the tusked being charged once more. Upon coming into contact with the ice however, Donphan's speed was quickly reduced to a saunter, and it was left stumbling and tripping upon the frozen field.
"He fell for it! Alright Vanilluxe, use Icicle Spear!"
Vanilluxe opened its mouth again, this type shooting miniature frozen spikes. They fell upon the unsteady Donphan like a sharp rainstorm, pounding into his flank and sides. The super-effective attack drove Donphan off the ice and back on to solid ground, yet the barrage left it shaky.
"Donphan, are you okay?" Ash asked, receiving an affirmative 'Don'.
Dang it. Vanilluxe is protected by a ring of ice. If I try to get close, Donphan will just slip again. Vanilluxe probably has nothing but ranged attacks too, so he can strike Donphan without moving away.
As if to prove Ash's point, Trip ordered for another Ice Beam, this one aimed at Donphan.
"Use Defense Curl again!"
The green shield returned, holding back another frosty volley. Ash grimaced as Donphan's protection began to falter. Defense Curl, whilst useful, wasn't nearly as strong as a move like Protect. And as Donphan grew weaker, so did his defenses.
"Donphan, get out of there with Rollout!"
The shield dissipated, revealing the form of a curled up Donphan. It fled the scene, darting to the other side of the arena, Vanilluxe's ice beam in pursuit. Despite Donphan's speed, the Armour Pokémon was having trouble keeping pace. Any moment now and Vanilluxe would entomb it in a crystal prison.
Desperate times I guess. "Donphan, use Hyper Beam!"
Donphan sprung from Rollout, landed, turned and released a jet of devastating, yellow light. Vanilluxe's Ice Beam paled in comparison to such power. As the attacks clashed, the Hyper Beam swiftly overcame the wave of sleet, reaching Vanilluxe and swallow the ice cream in a roaring explosion.
"Alright, looks like another round goes to Vanilluxe, Trip!"
"I wouldn't be so sure Ketchum,"
The smoggy mist left behind by the Hyper Beam was quick to clear, revealing an unscatched Vanilluxe happily floating around.
"But how?" Donphan's Hyper Beam was one of the strongest attacks available on Ash's whole team. How did Vanilluxe take it without so much as losing his cool?
Xan's note: Corny pun is corny.
"I had Vanilluxe use Acid Armour. He still took a bit of damage, but almost nothing in comparison to watch the original attack would have dealt. Now then, use Blizzard whilst Donphan is unable to move!"
Oh no! Donphan's vulnerable after that attack. Now what?
From Vanilluxe's mouth emerged yet another chilling move. Freezing winds and piles of snow filled the air, transforming the surrounding landscape into a frozen tundra. And at the centre of it all, Donphan struggled against the storm, shivering and gasping.
"Donphan, get out of there!"
Finally recovered from his exhaustion, the Ground type plunged through the elements in search of safety. Despite the circumstances, Ash had to admire the prowess of Vanilluxe, capable of summoning a Blizzard of such strength. Still, where was there to hide if the Ice type had the entire arena under its control? It was then Ash spotted the growing mountains of snow. Aside from throwing snowballs, the teen had another idea.
"Quick Donphan, bury yourself in the snow!"
A risky move, but Ash saw no other way to combat the storms. If Donphan could wait it out, then Ash could come up with a counter attack. Until then however, they were at the mercy of Trip and his Blizzard.
Donphan dived, his body resembling a half-finished ice sculpture. The Johto Pokémon crashed into one of the snowfall mountains, digging through the powder as swiftly as his stumpy feet and hands would allow.
"Face it Ash, Donphan is finished!" Trip declared dramatically. Ash was somewhat pleased that Trip hadn't noticed Donphan's whereabouts. Perhaps this could offer the opportunity for a surprise attack?
As the winds of winter finally began to subside, Ash surveyed the environment. The snow left in Blizzard's wake was quickly melting. Ash scanned for Donphan, praying to Arceus that it'd survived. In his search for the Johto Pokémon however, Ash's eyes rested on something else. The pillar left behind by Conkeldurr.
I can't hit Vanilluxe with physical attacks, and Hyper Beam isn't worth the risk. What if I used the pillar to take Vanilluxe down? It's a tough shot, but I think it'd be enough to take him out the fight…
Returning to reality, Ash spotted Donphan burst out from one of the snow piles, shaking the white coating from his skin. He was struck with concern at Donphan's frozen hind quarters. His Pokémon was already injured and this would only slow him. The teen considered withdrawing him to avoid any further harm. Was Donphan actually up to the task?
It answered for him.
"DONPHAN!" it roared, shouting a challenge at his icy foe. Vanilluxe showed off with an Ice Shard into the sky, which was very unpleasant for the audience when the attack fell back down. Ash decided to use that brief moment to put his plan into action.
"Donphan, knock that pillar at Vanilluxe!"
The Ground type, despite having half its body coated in ice, charged to the concrete pillar. Another Ice Beam hustled into its flank, nearly welding Ash's Pokémon in place. And yet even then, Donphan was far from finished.
"DONPHAN!" it bellowed, shattering its numbing prison with a devastating kick.
Donphan surged on once more. Its breathing was ragged. Sweat flowed forth like an open dam. One of its legs dragged behind. But it refused to give in.
"Come on Donphan, you can do it!" Ash yelled as loud as he could. Completely unnecessary, since both trainers had mics.
"Donphan!" Ash heard his friend's name rising from the crowds. Among the voices, he could make out those of his companions. He turned to look at Donphan, his heart pounding, as his Pokémon rolled away from a final Ice Beam and reached the pillar.
"Don -," Donphan slid it onto its tusks, lowered its head, took a final breath...
"- PHAN!" The Armour Pokémon flinged the concrete with unparalleled speed and accuracy, spelling a painful doom for Vanilluxe.
"Freeze it Vanilluxe!" cried Trip, as Conkeldurr's weapon began its descent.
Ever the loyal ice cream, Vanilluxe obeyed. A flurry of ice encased the object, yet to Ash's delight and Trip's horror, this only hastened the pillar's collapse to Earth.
"VANILLUXE!"
The Ice type suffered a direct hit, the damage only worsened by the frozen concrete. The delectable creature was thrust to the surface with an ear-shattering bang. Dust flooded the area, blinding the spectators. Even so, it was fairly obvious that Vanilluxe -
" - is unable to battle! Donphan is the winner!"
"How does he do it folks? Ash Ketchum was facing supposedly insurmountable odds against Trip and his Vanilluxe, yet he's pulled out another victory!"
"How does Ash do it?" asked Max, munching from a bucket of small popcorn.
"It's this natural instinct Max," said Brock, eating from a large bucket of popcorn, "Ash has this ability to come up with these outside the box strategies, even when he's under pressure."
"This duel has been sweet against bitter from the start," added Cilan, sharing a bucket of large popcorn with Iris, "And it looks like the bitter can't take the heat!"
"That's my Ashy," May grinned, devouring an extra-large bucket of popcorn with butter and salt.
"Her Ashy?" Brock whispered to Max.
The young trainer just shrugged, whilst the breeder stroked his chin, contemplating...
"Way to go Donphan!" yelled Ash.
The Ground Pokémon roared its name to the furthest ends of the stadium. Like an echo, the crowds repeated it back
"Donphan! Donphan! Donphan!"
The armoured creature, from what Ash could gather, was delighted with all the attention it was receiving. It bowed its head to a few people. It even blew a kiss to a lucky fan.
"Donphan, you were amazing!" Ash cheered, hugging his Pokémon tightly.
"Donp-" the Johto Pokémon stopped mid-cry, bending forward on one knee and muttering. Ash felt a multitude of sensations, a mix of nausea and fright as his friend struggled to stand. His eyes were drawn to his bad leg, which bore damage from its showdown with Vanilluxe. With help from Ash, Donphan stood up again, this time refusing to put weight on his injury.
"Excuse me sir," Ash called to the referee, "Can I withdraw Donphan from the tournament?"
Just what is he doing?
The battle had been postponed as Ash called over one of the referees. Was he going to complain that Trip had hurt his precious Pokémon? If he thought that would kick Trip out of the Unova Conference and avoid battling further, Ash would soon be mistaken.
Wait, he's not trying to get me disqualified. He's actually asking the ref to remove Donphan from the match? Who does he think he is?
Trip glared on at his rival. He was talking about disqualifying Donphan. Obviously a ploy to make Trip look bad. And it was working! The crowds were eating up the so-called respect and compassion Ash had for those creatures. Well no longer! If he wanted Donphan out the competition, Trip would gladly fulfil his wish...
"So that's why I'd like to withdraw Donphan sir," Ash told the referee, "He's worn out but he's served his best. I'd rather not throw him into another battle. "
"Hmm," the referee appeared to consider the decision for a moment, before smiling happily and nodding.
"Very well. You're an admirable young man for this. Donphan will be withdrawn and the battle shall continue!"
"Thank you sir," Ash beamed, before turning to Donphan, "Ready to be returned?"
The Ground type huffed something under its breath and gave Ash the 'Just one more round' eyes.
"I'll use you next battle, but you've done a fantastic job Donphan! You went head-to-head and, err, head-to-cone with two of Trip's toughest. You've earned a rest, old friend."
Donphan looked away momentarily, as if pondering Ash's words. The trainer smiled fondly, thinking back to his friend's days as an egg, then a Phanphy. It, no, had been such a playful thing, though he'd fought his battles with a fiercer passion and determination.
"Don," the Pokémon muttered, agreeing to the switch.
"Alright," Ash ran his hand along his companion's head, removing a Pokéball from his own belt.
"Donphan, ret-"
"CONKELDURR, THROW YOUR PILLAR AT DONPHAN!"
In the briefest moment, Ash caught a bright flash in the corner of his eye as Conkeldurr returned to the field. Emerging from his spherical home, the Fighting type pulled its arm backwards and launched its trademark weapon at the distracted Donphan. It hurtled across the stadium, blasting into Donphan's side and tossing him like a ragdoll.
"Don... Phan," the injured Pokémon muttered. Trapped on its side. Its armour stained with scratches and marks. It lifted its head once more, staring at his trainer with sorrow-filled eyes, before the sadness was replaced with swirls.
"Time out!" the referee began flailing his arms about like a psychotic, as Ash sprinted over to his unconscious friend.
"Donphan, no!" Ash cradled his friend for a few seconds, examining the damage left by Conkeldurr's attack. Taking the previous damage into account, the Armour Pokémon wasn't in the best possible state. Breathing heavily, a dizzy look was filling his eyes. All Ash could hope for was that the Pokémon Center could nurse him back to health.
"What's wrong Ash? I thought you wanted your pansy Pokémon disqualified," Trip giggled from across the stadium, his voice booming through his mic.
Throughout the battle, Trip had belittled Ash. He'd attempted to weaken and annoy through use of insults. The Raven-haired teen was no stranger to such behaviour, his past rivals frequently using such an attitude against him. But now Trip had crossed the imaginary line, focusing his physical and verbal assault on his partners.
"What the heck was that for!?" the audience clutched at their ears, Ash's anger amplified through the arena, "I asked them to remove Donphan from the match and you knocked him out when he was defenseless!"
"I figured you needed to be taught a lesson," Trip shrugged, "Your arrogance and luck will only get you so far. Sure you weakened one of my Pokémon and knocked out another, but your compassion for your Donphan was your downfall. It's quite pathetic, in all honesty."
From the crowds descended a flurry of popcorn, hotdogs and even t-shirts. Trip stood his ground, allowing the objects to crash harmlessly around him. Ash glared as the only damage the Unova trainer received was a mustard stain to the knee.
"Compassion? Just because you use your Pokémon as tools doesn't mean we all do!"
"You're wrong there Ash. I care about my Pokémon, but I expect them to serve me with unfaltering loyalty and unmatchable power. Your willingness to withdraw Donphan before he was actually defeated shows me you're weak, incapable of doing what is necessary to win. You'll always hold back, always second-guess yourself, relying on chance to see you through to the end."
Trip was close to foaming at the mouth, yelling into his microphone with such passion and belief. How can Trip even see things like this? I thought he was a better person…
"You're about to be shown a cold, harsh reality Ketchum! Either you start giving me all you have or go home to Kanto with all the other losers!"
Again, that feeling. The thought of forgetting the Pokémon Battle and dealing with Trip his own way. Ash wasn't a violent person, but never before had he or his team been on the receiving end of such… such hatred. Such anger. What had happened to Trip in the weeks since he'd last seen him? What was he attempting to gain by ordering his Pokémon to use brutal, unrestrained attacks?
Ash took a moment to consider Tri's words. Holding back? Was he really the type of person that refused to give everything he had? Of course not. He'd always tried his best in his battles, resolving to give it his all, no matter the outcome. Granted, he did care about the wellbeing of his Pokémon. But did that really make him weak?
No, it shows that they mean something to me. I don't ever need to expect them to give me their best, because I know they always will. I don't need to demand respect or loyalty like Trip does, because I know I've earned it. And if I have to throw in the towel just because the health of my friends comes before anything else, then so be it.
"I've never backed down from anything Trip, and I certainly won't back down to you!"
Trip's eyes widened, his mouth tumbling open. Ash removed Donphan's Pokéball and returned him, vanishing the Ground type in a ball of red light. He returned his attention to his opponent.
"I'm not gonna back down to some bully who thinks he can hurt my friends! If you feel like you've got what it takes to beat me, then bring it on! But I've always given it my all and I'm not about to stop now. So if you think you're going to have an easy time winning this match, you've got another thing coming."
Ash removed his second Pokéball. Conkeldurr eyed the object with glee, cracking its knuckles and flexing its body. Even his Pokémon are like him.
"Ready to lose, Ketchum?" Trip laughed, "Your speech doesn't frighten me. I can take anything you've got!"
"We'll see about that."
Ash prepared to throw the ball, glancing to the crowds a final time. Brock, Max, Cilan, Iris… May. Please believe in me. I'm gonna win this thing.
The Pallet Town native grabbed his cap, spun it around and threw the Pokéball with a ferocity and determination like none other.
"I choose you!"
