Hi guys! Here's an early Thursday update for you :). Be prepared that this chapter has quite a shock in it, but stick with me. Thank you to everyone who has read, reviewed, and added this story to your favorites! Thank you for all of the lovely things that you have said to me in my reviews! I do read them all :)
DarknessQueen12: I think you might be on to something :-P Thanks for reviewing and reading!
Susl: Sorry this one isn't longer, but I didn't want to put the next part with this chapter! It's kind of a 2 part piece you could say. Thank you for reading and reviewing!
Klaroline4ever2: I will try to put one in, but I want it to fit in the story at some point and not be random, so I'll have to try to figure it out! Thanks for reading and reviewing!
Like the show, I'm saying that Elena and Jeremy lived with their Aunt Jenna, and of course there are no vampires in this story, so Aunt Jenna is alive. Ok, so brace yourself for this chapter, and please don't hate me! I promise it will all be okay in the end! Happy reading…
Disclaimer: I do not own TVD, The Originals, or their characters…
Caroline fell asleep in no time, the events of the day taking their toll on her. She felt like she should be happy about the memories that had come back, but to be honest, she wasn't satisfied. She wanted all of her memories back, not just a few here and there. However, she knew that she should be happy that the few that had come back so far were coming back quickly. She knew that it had to be the fact that she was back at their house, not her mother's. Also, she didn't know if she would have any of the memories back had it not been for Klaus' determination. He was always there to help her recall memories whenever she needed him.
Klaus made his way into the guest bedroom not long after helping Caroline get settled in their room. He felt like he would know when she was ready for him to come back to their room, and for now, he didn't feel like she was ready. He wouldn't complain though, because he was just happy to have her under the same roof.
Caroline was in a deep sleep when a dream appeared out of nowhere, only the dream didn't seem like a dream at all.
Caroline was pacing back and forth, her nerves getting the best of her. She kept glancing at her watch, checking the time. She was on her break at work, and she had luckily gotten some time alone.
"Come on," she whispered to herself as she continued to pace. When the few minutes were finally up, she took one last deep breath before walking over to the bathroom counter.
She picked up the stick and read the small digital letters: Pregnant.
Caroline felt a range of emotions from fear to excitement. She was worried that she wasn't ready for a child yet. She was scared that Klaus wouldn't be happy. They had talked about having children, but they were planning on waiting. But over every other feeling she felt, she was excited. Caroline laid a hand on her stomach. She was pregnant!
Caroline sat straight up in bed, her breathing rapid. She felt sick. Was the dream in fact a memory? And if so, why wouldn't anyone tell her about something so monumental in her life?
Before she could wrack her brain anymore, she decided to go find out for sure because there was no way she would be getting any sleep if she didn't. She threw her door open and stormed down the hall. She realized that if the dream was actually a dream, then she was overreacting, but she couldn't shake her feelings. She opened Klaus' door, not bothering to knock, and flipped on the light.
Klaus sat up immediately, squinting to keep the light from burning his eyes. "Caroline? Is everything alright?"
Her breath was still ragged as she tried to speak. "You tell me."
Klaus' eyes finally adjusted to the light so he could see her face. When he saw the tears flowing down her cheeks, he jumped out of bed to comfort her. "Caroline, what's wrong? What happened?" He reached out to touch her face, but she pulled away.
"Was I ever pregnant?" She asked, ignoring the confusion that had crossed his face at her reaction to his touch.
He was shocked by the question. His eyes widened and his mouth went dry. He had no idea how to come up with a response.
"Nik!" She almost screamed, knowing the answer just by his lack of words, but she wanted to hear him say it. "Was I?"
"You knew?" The confusion appeared on his face again.
Caroline didn't understand why he was surprised that she would know she was pregnant. If he knew, then she had to know, right? "What do you mean? Tell me what happened. Why don't I have a child?" The tears began to fall again, the dream becoming reality.
"Caroline, you lost the baby in the car accident," he whispered. If anything, he felt like he should be the one that was angry in that moment. She had known she was pregnant, and she hadn't told him. "How did you know you were pregnant? When did you find out?"
She threw her hands in the air. "I don't know, Niklaus! I had a dream about taking the pregnancy test." Her anger was building. "How could you not tell me I lost a child?" She turned the questioning back to him.
"We thought it would be too much for you to handle..." He began to explain.
"We? Who's we?" Caroline cut him off. "Am I the only person that didn't know about this?"
"Your mother and me. No one else knew." He could see how angry she was, and he knew now wasn't the time to question her on anything. The best thing for him to do was answer her questions.
She continued to cry as the anger was now competing with the hurt in her heart. "How could you keep this from me? After everything you've told me, don't you think our child would have been the most important thing?"
"I'm sorry, Caroline..." He started again, tears now filling his eyes.
"Don't!" She stopped him. She started making her way out of his room. "Just don't."
"Please, just let me explain." He ran after her.
Caroline knew he was following her, so she ran. Unfortunately, she wasn't faster than him, and he caught her in their front yard. But before he could say a word, she spoke. "If you loved me like you said you did, you wouldn't have kept something like this from me." She knew it would hurt him, and she realized that she accomplished just that when his face clouded over with pain. She immediately felt bad, but she wanted him to hurt like she was hurting. "Just leave me alone." She told him before turning and walking away.
Instead of running after her, Klaus did the only thing he knew to do. He went inside and called her best friend.
"Hello?" Elena's voice was groggy on the other end.
"Elena? It's Klaus."
Elena became alert when she heard the sadness in his voice. "Klaus what's wrong? Is Caroline alright?"
Klaus shook his head, defeated. "No, she's not."
As Caroline was walking down the road, tears still blurring her vision, she heard a car pulling up beside her. She began to panic, thinking about all the creeps that were out at that time of night. She tried to keep her pace steady, not wanting the person in the car to see her fear.
"Caroline?" The voice called.
Caroline stopped in her tracks, and turned towards the vehicle. Her best friend stepped out of the car, and ran to her. "Caroline, are you okay?"
Caroline couldn't answer as she buried her head in Elena's shoulder. All she managed to do was shake her head and let her sobbing take over.
Once they were finally inside Elena's house, Elena told Caroline to have a seat on the couch. Elena went into the kitchen and made Caroline some tea before joining her on the sofa.
"Thanks," Caroline told her as she took the warm mug. The blonde seemed to finally have run out of tears. "What were you doing out so late tonight?" Caroline was trying to keep her mind occupied with other things by shifting the subject onto someone other than herself.
Elena didn't know if she should tell her the real reason she was out, but she decided that she should be honest with her friend. "Klaus called me."
Caroline stopped, her mug halfway to her mouth. So much for not talking about her problems. "Oh."
"What happened, Care?" The brunette grabbed her best friend's hand in comfort, knowing that whatever it was, it was serious.
Caroline shook her head. She felt a new batch of tears fill her eyes. "I thought I was finished crying," she tried to laugh.
"It's okay, Caroline. Just take your time." Elena encouraged her to continue.
Caroline took a deep breath. "I was pregnant." Her gaze was fixed on her lap, not wanting to see Elena's reaction.
"What?" Elena asked. Caroline didn't have to see her face to know she was shocked.
"I had a dream, which turned out to be a memory. I was pregnant some time before the car accident. I lost the baby in the crash." Caroline's cheeks were streaked with fresh tears.
"Well you couldn't have been that far along because no one could have guessed that. You weren't showing." She was trying to figure it all out for herself. "Poor Klaus, he must be devastated as well."
Caroline stood up. "I don't want to talk about him right now. He knew and he didn't tell me. He's had so many opportunities to tell me, and he kept this from me!"
"If he knew and didn't tell you, he must have had a reason, Care." The brunette stood also.
"Don't defend him, Elena. Don't take his side." Caroline began to make her way to the door,
Elena grabbed her arm. "Caroline, I'm not taking sides." She decided she should drop the subject, not wanting Caroline to leave angry. "Let's not talk about it right now, alright? It's already so late; would you like to stay here tonight?"
Caroline calmed down some and agreed to stay the night. She had nowhere else to go if she were being honest. She was just as angry with her mother as she was with her husband, so she couldn't go to her mom's house.
Elena led Caroline to the spare bedroom. Caroline realized for the first time that the house was almost exactly the same as when they were in high school. However, now Elena lived in it alone. Jenna had moved in with Alaric after they were married, and Jeremy had his own apartment. Of course, Jeremy would occasionally stay with his sister for the free home cooked meals. Otherwise, the house had been kept exactly the same.
Caroline felt like she could sleep for days, but she couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard she tried. Her mind was running way too fast. She was trying to remember more of the day she found out she was pregnant, but nothing would come. Her anger and hurt towards her mother and Klaus were not helping her sleep either. She didn't understand how two of the most important people in her life could have kept this from her. She ended up tossing and turning all night.
The same could be said for Klaus. He kept replaying her words over and over in his mind. Each time he thought about her questioning his love for her, he felt like someone punched him in the stomach. He also couldn't help but wonder how long she had known she was pregnant, and why she hadn't told him. He knew she couldn't have known long because she wasn't far into the pregnancy when she was in the accident. It still made him wonder if she was scared to tell him though. Then, he questioned whether or not they had made the right choice in not telling her about the pregnancy. But, deep down, he still felt like they had made the right choice. The only thing that was bringing him peace was knowing that she was with Elena, but it wasn't enough to let him sleep.
When he finally gave up on trying to sleep, it was close to 8 AM the next morning. He walked into the living room, feeling Caroline's absence all over again. He was shocked that she was only there one full night before he messed something up. He sighed, put on an extra strong pot of coffee, and looked for his phone.
The phone rang three times before Elena answered, her voice sounding a lot like it had the night before. "Hello?"
"It's Klaus. How's Caroline?" He wasted no time getting to his point.
Elena yawned. "She's not doing very well, Klaus. She's really upset that you didn't tell her about the baby."
"She told you."
"Of course she told me, Klaus. She kind of had to after I found her last night and she was a complete wreck." Elena really didn't know what was going to make this situation better.
Klaus sighed. "I need to talk to her. I need to explain to her why we didn't tell her."
"Not today. Let me try to talk to her first." She knew it wasn't what he wanted to hear. "She needs some time."
Klaus reluctantly agreed before hanging up the phone. He was so angry that he could have knocked a hole in the wall, but he restrained himself. He couldn't let his anger take him over, not again. He felt defeated. He didn't know if their relationship was going to make it through this. It was already tested with the loss of her memory. He felt like the world was out to get him.
It took Elena a week to even talk to Caroline about Klaus. Every time she brought up his name, the blonde would cut her off. She was frustrated, but she knew that Caroline was going through something traumatic and she needed to be patient with her friend. Klaus called every day to check on Caroline, and every day Elena told him to give her some more time. Elena could tell that Klaus was getting impatient, but she didn't know what else to do. She knew Caroline, and if he showed up, it would just make things worse.
Caroline had been staying with Elena the whole week. Elena had insisted that she wasn't being an intrusion, and that it was actually nice to have someone around. Fortunately for Caroline, she and Elena were close to the same size in clothes, not that she was really getting out much. Caroline was ignoring the calls from her mom, but she was surprised that Klaus hadn't tried to call even once, which is what started the two friends' conversation.
"You know he hasn't even tried to call me once? You would think he would at least try to apologize again or something." Caroline complained.
"I'm assuming you mean Klaus?" Elena asked, but didn't wait for a response. "I talk to him every day. He knows you're fine." The two girls were sitting on the sofa.
"You talk to him?" Caroline asked, surprised.
Elena rolled her eyes. "If he didn't know you were alright, Caroline, he would have been knocking down my door days ago. That man loves you more than life itself."
"If he loved me, he wouldn't have lied to me." Caroline snapped.
Elena couldn't handle it anymore. "Are you listening to yourself, Caroline? This isn't you. I know that you have gone through one trauma after another lately, but so has he. It's not like you to be this angry, especially at someone that you love." She didn't wait for Caroline to respond, but she made sure she was listening to what she was saying. "You are holding this grudge against him when you don't even know all the facts. I'm not trying to take sides, but don't you get it? He has lost a lot here too, Care. He almost lost you, and then he found out he lost a child. I know you're hurting, but so is he."
Caroline felt the knot growing in her throat and the tears filling her eyes. She didn't know what to say. She knew what her friend was saying was true, but she still felt betrayed by him.
"Give him a chance to explain himself. If you feel like you need to come back here afterwards, fine, but at least talk to him," the brunette pleaded.
Caroline fought the tears that were threatening to fall. She stood up. "I need some air." She didn't wait for Elena to respond, she just left the house.
Caroline didn't know what to do. Her heart was telling her to go to Klaus and listen to what he had to say, but her head was telling her not to. She felt like she was being torn in half. She wiped away the tear that had spilled onto her cheek. If she had to sit down and dissect her feelings, she would see that some of her anger was actually directed at herself. It frustrated her that she couldn't remember anything, not just because it affected her but because it affected Klaus too. She knew he was hurting, but unfortunately she was usually so caught up in her own feelings that she overlooked his. As she continued to walk, she tried to come to a decision on what to do. However, when she looked up, she realized that she had made her decision without even meaning to.
She walked through the yard, up the front steps, across the porch, and opened the door.
Klaus heard the front door open, so he stepped into the entryway.
Caroline closed the door behind her. Her blue eyes met his as soon as she looked up.
I am going to try to put the next chapter up before Christmas so I don't have to worry about posting an update the day after Christmas. I know it's a cliffhanger, but there will be more info in the next chapter that will help clear some things up. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for the next chapter.
