Author's note: Sorry for the lack of updates! Life has kept me busy. But after getting some new followers/faves and some reviews I felt that I need to write a new chapter for you all. Not very much happens in this chapter, mostly some talking and bonding but I hope you will like it. My head is a bit empty because life has kept me busy but I hope you will find it alright.
Disclaimer: I don´t own any of these characters.
Chapter 10: Watch out for you
As they had just won a very important battle, of course they celebrated afterwards when they all had arrived safely back at the base on the desert planet. Though first they burrowed the dead with a quiet minute to honor the fallen warriors who had fought bravely for justice and peace in the galaxy, and all wounded soldiers were taken to the infirmary for treatment before any celebration took place. As they were in the middle of a war they had not much to celebrate with but that didn´t stop the soldiers from having a good time together.
Meta Knight, on the other hand, didn´t participate in any celebrations. He was in his room, only with his thoughts as company since Jecra was still being treated in the infirmary. 'My first battle against Nightmare's forces… and we won' he thought for himself as he laid there on his back and stared into the ceiling above his bed. Despite being a distance away from where the celebrations were taking place, he could still hear the faint noises of music and laughter. 'At least they seem to enjoy themselves… Though who can blame them, this was an important victory and our losses weren´t bad. But… why can´t I shake this feeling of unease? What is the source?' He shook his head. Was it Nightmare who made him feel like this? Or what it something about this battle that bothered him? He thought back to the fight… but he couldn´t find anything that could cause him to feel like this. Nothing felt strange or suspicious about it either. What could it be?
"Hey, why aren´t you with the others and celebrate?" a voice suddenly disturbed his thoughts and he quickly sat up to find Jecra standing at the door, bandaged around his torso after his visit to the infirmary. Meta Knight relaxed and fell back again to keep staring at the ceiling.
"I see no importance of it, there will be even more important battles we will win and we shouldn´t celebrate every little victory. We should prepare for the next battle instead of wasting time fooling around like that" Meta Knight said coldly as Jecra went over to his own bed and sat down on it, taking off his mask and weapon to put them next to the bed. Then he shook his head at Meta Knight's words.
"You´re a real ray of sunshine, aren´t you? Come on! This was our first real battle, a very important one too, and we won! Aren´t that something to celebrate?" he insisted and carefully lay down on his back to stare up at the ceiling just like his blue roommate. Meta Knight grunted quietly in response before glancing over at him.
"Then why aren´t you out there and celebrating?" he replied and stared up at the ceiling again. Jecra chuckled quietly, though had to stop as it caused his injury to hurt.
"Heh, you got me there. To be honest I´m too tired to be celebrating much. I thought I was quite well trained, but this all took more energy than I thought" Jecra admitted and gently patted his bandaged side, meaning that both his injury and the battle had exhausted him. "Fortunately the injury wasn´t very bad and will heal within a few weeks. Then I will train even harder and become an even better warrior!" He finished that sentence with a grin.
Meta Knight shook his head slightly, not understanding where this man got all his optimism from. They laid there quietly for several minutes before Jecra once again spoke up.
"By the way, remember that green batamon who helped us fight against the Heavy Lobster? Do you know who he is?" he asked the smaller warrior, who shook his head in reply and urged the taller one to continue. "He is Sir Falspar, a really great warrior of high status in the army. Supposedly he is known for his fiery personality and can be foul-mouthed but is really a good man." Meta Knight thought back to the battle with the Heavy Lobster, remembering the way the green batamon acted. "I got this information while being in the infirmary. He was actually one of those in charge of planning this battle! No wonder I don´t remember seeing him in the training grounds, he was probably busy with the plans. And I think most soldiers here know who he is so it wasn´t necessary to have a big introduction when the only ones who didn´t know him were two new soldiers."
Meta Knight agreed that it would have been a waste of time to introduce himself to new soldiers when Sir Falspar had been busy planning the battle, though he wondered how much he actually had planned. He seemed more like the type who would just charge right into a battle. Though Meta Knight knew too well that one should not deem a person after appearance; his own species being a perfect example.
"It is actually quite an honor to have battled by his side. He is so far above us in status, yet we have already fought together with him. We also cooperated to take down a Heavy Lobster in our very first battle!" Jecra said and grinned, his voice filled with pride. "I doubt many new soldiers can brag about such a thing! And we didn´t become so wounded either!" Then he grew quiet for a few moments before glanced over at Meta Knight, his voice now having hints of worry in it. "Wait, didn´t you get hit by the Heavy Lobster? You were sent flying right into me one time. Didn´t that cause you any injuries?"
"It didn´t hit me hard enough to cause any bigger wounds, plus the body of a batamon can reduce the damaged done to it when attacked like that" Meta Knight explained. But that was not the whole truth. Jecra didn´t need to know that what Meta Knight truly was had caused him to have not gotten any worse injuries than a few bruises from the impact he had with the claw of the metallic monster. Fortunately he seemed to accept Meta Knight's words without any suspicious thoughts.
"Wow really? That´s cool. I had no idea people like your kind was such good fighters" Jecra said, but added quickly, "No offense." Meta Knight shook his head.
"None taken. I believe it is normal for others to think of batamons as not very good fighters. That is both good and bad, since we can catch our enemies by surprise" he responded.
"Well, I understand what you mean. I saw you in battle and you were really good for someone who has just joined the army! Probably better than me! I believe we will make a good team in the future!" Jecra said grinning. Meta Knight wasn´t really sure if he wanted to spend that much time with the taller warrior; his optimism was a bit too much. But having allies was always a good thing. And Jecra seemed to be a good fighter despite being new in the army and seemed to be dependable even in dire situations, which made it all better.
"Did you see that magenta batamon who helped us fight the Heavy Lobster?" Meta Knight asked after a few minutes of silence, to which Jecra responded with a nod. "Do you know who he is?"
"Yes, well, at least I know his name is Galacta and he´s of high status. Wasn´t he at the base at Yungela?" he asked back, and this time was Meta Knight's time to nod. "That´s all I know, though. Why do you ask?"
He was quiet for a few moments, unsure if he should really answer. He didn´t want to risk having Jecra walk around and spread what he was saying about such an important person in the army after all. But after some contemplation he felt that Jecra seemed to be the kind of man who would keep quiet.
"I have a feeling he dislikes me greatly" Meta Knight began slowly, contemplating if he should tell him about what Galacta had growled to him at the base on the jungle planet but decided to not mention it in the end. "He keeps giving me glares and from what I have seen, his mood seems to turn sour as soon as I am near."
"Heh, he´s probably mad because two new recruits did most of the work to bring down that Heavy Lobster instead of him. I may be new here but I know enough about him to say what a proud guy he is. He thinks himself better than everyone else because of Sir Arthur took him in and because of the prophecy" Jecra replied, with a small grin at the beginning as he felt pride over having helped bringing down a Heavy Lobster. Meta Knight on the other hand thought about his words. Mostly about the last thing he said. Seemingly Jecra knew of the prophecy too. But before he could think any more about it Jecra turned to him again. "You know, you actually saved my life in this battle. When the demon beast knocked me down and was charging up an attack. I was unconscious right then but I heard about it now afterwards, how you had run up to the Heavy Lobster and driven your sword right into its claw. That was really dangerous! Yet you did it despite that you could have been caught up in the beam and been killed. You really saved me, and I will never forget that. Thank you."
"You would have done the same for me" Meta Knight responded after a few moments. To be honest he had no idea why he had done it, he had just acted before thinking and that was something he usually never did, yet he had done it and saved his life. Though he was actually quite sure that Jecra would have done the same for him. He didn´t seem like the kind of man who would just leave a comrade to die like that without doing anything.
"Well, I´m still grateful" Jecra said and lay on his back again to gaze up at the ceiling. "When I woke up again, right before the monster was killed, I thought for a second that I was dead because I felt so numb at first." His voice became filled with sorrow for a moment. "I don´t want to die yet. There´s so much I want to do, so much I can do! I want to help make the galaxy peaceful again and rid all the planets of Nightmare´s evil. And I want to see my girlfriend again… I promised that I would come and visit as soon as I can, I´m not going to break that promise!" He glanced at Meta Knight again. "So can you now see why I´m grateful? Thanks to you I can keep fighting for the right thing, and I can see my beloved again. I will watch out for you just as you watched out for me."
Meta Knight wasn´t really sure how to feel about this; never before had anyone expressed such gratitude to him. Nearly all the demon beasts, at least the stronger ones he had always had to battle in the seemingly endless training sessions at Nightmare's main base, never showed such compassion. To them everything was about killing or pleasing Nightmare by killing as many of his enemies as possible. Meta Knight might have been programmed to completely different than the others of his kind but all of this was still new to him. Though… he got a warm feeling that felt odd but in a good way. Was this how it was… would he dare to say it... to have a friend?
"Th… Thank you. We all need to look out for each other after all in this war" he said after a short time of silence because he hadn´t known what to say. Jecra only grinned and said nothing more.
