Recall: I know it's a bit selfish of me, I know you already said you would but I must ask for myself. Please protect me Inuyasha. I really don't want to die. My mother's corpse still plagues my mind. I hope never o relieve that again. Whether it be myself or anyone else for that matter. Please keep me safe.
I hope to see you soon as well. I have no clue as to when, but it will be soon.
Yours Truly
Kagome groaned to herself before putting the letter away. Once she sealed it, she went to the bed and snuggled against her pillow. I wonder what he's doing right now. She thought. As she drifted off to sleep, she couldn't help but feel his presence. It was like she could hear him, feel him.
Like we have a connection...
Chapter 11: Beauty
Miroku left Inuyasha alone while he sharpened his staff. He had a feeling that this time he should read it immediately by the way Kagome looked this morning. She seemed as if she was upset. He didn't ask why, just told her that she should take it easy. He turned to see how Inuyasha was reacting to the letter. Judging by the worried look on his face, his assumption was correct. Inuyasha came walking to him, a million thoughts running through his mind.
"Is everything okay?" Miroku asked.
"I've got to see her." He groaned in annoyance.
"It's too soon."
"I don't care, she needs me."
"She'll be fine."
"No, I just..." He paused tightening his hand into a fist. "She's scared for her life. I need to see her so she can relax."
"Inuyasha..."
"It's not up for discussion."
"Ya, well you have a slight problem."
"What's that?"
"What's your fiancé gonna say about this?" Inuyasha huffed.
"I have no fiancé as of yet. That wench in there can cry herself a river. I don't give a rat's ass how she feels."
"Nicely said."
"I'll be at the stables soon."
"I'll be ready by the time you get back."
Inuyasha couldn't have been happier. After going so long without seeing Kagome, he was absolutely ecstatic. He left his room, on his way to the stables when he heard someone call out to him.
"Where do you think you're going?" Inuyasha stopped, recognizing the voice to be his father.
"Nowhere of importance to you." He turned to face him, paying careful attention to the suspicious look his father was giving him. "What is it you want?"
"Lady Kikyo frets that you ignore her."
"And that's my problem how?"
"You're supposed to be spending time with her."
"I don't want to."
"And why is that?"
"Isn't it obvious? I don't like her. Maybe she should go home." Inutashio couldn't help but notice his son's attire. He looked as if he was going to meet someone. Almost as if he was going to see a lady friend.
"Where is it you said you were going?"
"I didn't. But, if you must know, I'm going with Miroku to his estate."
"Aren't you a bit over dressed?"
"Is that so wrong?"
"You're hiding something."
"Then you explain what it is because I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You don't? Then you won't mind at all if I accompany you." Inuyasha's eyes widened. Questions, of course he knew his father would question him, but to flat out state he would join? He wasn't expecting that at all.
"Why would you do that? It would be a waste of time for you."
"On the contrary. I must see what it is that is so special."
"Nothing." Inutashio smirked.
"We shall see." He started walking away before he stopped for a second. "I just hope I don't have to get my hands dirty."
Inuyasha walked away, waiting until his father was out of sight before dashing to the stables. Shit! What are we going to do? He thought in alarm. He's gonna find out she's there. How are we gonna hide her?
Miroku was getting horses and a carriage ready. He didn't want it to seem to conspicuous or they would have just ran to his house. So he settled for something classy. Just as he got done talking to the coachmen, Inuyasha came running his way. Miroku could only guess as to why that was.
"You seem frightened."
"This is a fucking problem."
"What happened?"
"Father's coming with us." Miroku groaned, pinching his nose.
"I knew this was a bad idea." He whispered. It was a good thing that the coachmen was human, otherwise he'd be able to hear them.
"The fuck are we going to do?" Miroku said nothing, as he took out a spiritual paper, throwing it into the sky. "What was that?"
"That, will go to Kohaku. He's sort of a look out. He'll see the signal I just sent him and will give a signal to Sango. Kagome will know what to do."
"What if he doesn't see it?"
"Oh he'll see it. The little trick about having spiritual powers. Many cases, such as now, you and your father won't be able to see or sense the signal because you both are demons. And the distance is too far for humans around here to see it. So, everything is fine." Inuyasha huffed.
"Are you sure it'll work?" He asked, looking at the sky, not seeing a thing.
"Positive." They both of them stayed quite for a few minutes, in fear that the king might over hear them. Sure enough, the king should up.
"Your majesty." Miroku said, with a bow. Inutashio nodded. "I understand that you will be joining us. May I ask why?" Inutashio looked at Inuyasha before looking back at Miroku.
"To clean some loose ends."
"Well, let's not make you wait any longer." Miroku opened the door for the king, bowing as he entered. Inuyasha followed behind. All he was doing was praying to the Gods that everything was going to work out.
Kagome was in the backyard, taking the clothes and sheets off the line. She couldn't help but to wonder what Inuyasha thought about her letter. Maybe she shouldn't have been so honest. No point of regretting it now. I'm sure Miroku's already handed the letter to him. As she placed the clothes in the basket, she noticed Sango running straight toward her.
"Sango? What is it?" She ran up and grabbed her wrists.
"Come, Kagome. We must hide you."
"Why? What's the matter?"
"The King." She panted out. "He must be on his way. Kohaku gave the signal." Kagome gasped. She knew it was only a matter of time.
"Where would you hide me? Concealment or not, he'll know there's a forth party in the house."
"We must try. There must be something we can do." Suddenly, an idea formed into Kagome's head.
"There is."
"What?"
"I only did this once, with Miroku." Sango raised an eyebrow, her hands placed on her hips.
"And what exactly would that be?"
"Nothing that you are insinuating. Remember, he's in love with you." She blushed, crossing her arms.
"He is not!" Kagome laughed.
"Just watch." She put her hands to her chest for a few seconds before a purple glow came from her body. She then took her hands and placed them on her ears, pressing them down into her head. Once she released her hands, Sango saw that they were gone, causing her to gasp in shock. After her ears were gone, placed them where a humans ears would be. She uncovered them to reveal pointed demon ears.
Kagome then pulled her hair back, instantly turning it white. Finally for a finishing touch, she made her skin slightly paler. Kagome opened her eyes, which were now green instead of brown.
"Well?"
"K-Kagome. You're radiant."
"Will this due for a disguise?"
"Not quite." Sango grabbed her hand, leading her inside.
"What else is there?"
"Well what better way to fool the king than to pass on that you're a lady?" Kagome snatched her arm away.
"A lady? Really Sango you're joking."
"There's no time to argue about this. I'm sure that pervert has a few nice dresses that you can fit into. And I've done make up for Lady Izayoi from time to time. I'll make you look nice." Kagome groaned, completely distressed at this point.
"Fine, fine."
"Great, but we must hurry."
It wasn't long until the trio reached Miroku's house. As they stepped inside, Inutashio started to sniff the air. Satisfied when he found an unknown scent lingering around the home.
"I smell someone else in here." He turned to his son. "So you were hiding something." Inuyasha huffed.
"Who would be hiding anything your highness?" Miroku asked.
"Don't play coy with me, Miroku."
"Would I ever? Not to you, sire. But please, if you wish to inspect the house, I will not stop you." Inuyasha glared at him. The objective was to hide Kagome, not play games so his father can find him.
"This is stupid, father. I'm telling you I'm not hiding a thing."
"Really? Maybe I will look around, just so I can be at ease." Inuyasha was about to retort when Sango came rushing down.
"Oh my." She started, acting as if she had no idea the king was coming. "Sire, we had no idea you would be coming. I would have prepared for my lady to look more presentable."
"Your lady?"
"Yes, I've don't believe you've met. I shall retrieve her." She bowed again before running up the stairs.
"It's a woman?"
"Yes, well..." Miroku started. "...Inuyasha complains about what a bore Lady Kikyo is, so I wanted to set him up with the guest in my house."
"I see."
"And this is why I wanted to look decent." Inuyasha said, playing along. "I mean, as a first impression I don't want to look like I came from a match."
"Indeed."
"Come along my lady. The king and prince are here." Sango said, putting on a show. Kagome soon followed, the back of her hand coming up to her lips as she gasped.
"Oh my, this is a surprise indeed." She said, gracefully making her way downstairs.
Inuyasha couldn't believe his eyes. He knew that was Kagome, there was no mistake; she was wearing the necklace. She still had the big eyes, but they were a different color. Her hair was straight down, with a flower comb on the side. She was wearing a white dress with pink flowers and also had a white fan to match. She was dolled up, and Inuyasha couldn't have been more delighted.
Once Kagome was on their level, she dipped into a curtsey, bowing her head.
"Your highnesses."
"Lord Inutashio, may I present..." Miroku paused forgetting about a crucial detail.
"Yes?"
"Um...this is Lady..." He paused again. How could they not discuss a made up name for her.
"Midoriko." Kagome said, bowing. "Lady Midoriko." She mentally cursed at herself. How stupid of me! Why would you use your mother's name? What if he remembers? I'd have revealed myself.
"Lady Midoriko. It's a pleasure." Kagome exhaled with relief, her heart still racing. She knew she had to calm down, but it was hard to do so. "You seem to be in a panic. Could it be that you're afraid of me, young one." She laughed nervously, trying to come up with an excusable retort.
"Oh dear king, surely you jest. It's just that I never thought your highness would grace me with your presence. I must look a sight." She bowed her head a second time in respect. "I'm more than honored by this visit." Inutashio seemed as if he was pleased with her.
"Quite a beauty you are, I must say." Kagome smiled, her eyes remaining to the floor. She was so close to laughing at his comment. "Isn't that right, Inuyasha?" He didn't say a word, just kept staring at her.
"I don't deserve such kind words." A painted on face and a dress wasn't going to fool the king. As much as she makes fun of high class people, she, herself, was forced to act as such to gain the kings trust. To act like the complete opposite of herself was the only way to trick him. At least that was her theory.
"You were coming to meet her?" He asked Inuyasha.
"Yes, well, I've never met her personally. However, Miroku wouldn't stop babbling about her so I had to see her for myself."
"I hope they were pleasant words." Inuyasha walked up to her, taking her hands in his before kissing them both.
"Words do you no justice. Simply breath-taking." Kagome blushed, looking away.
"My lord, you embarrass me so."
"It appears that I was mistaken. Forgive me son." Inuyasha nodded. "In that case, I best be on my way."
"Oh please your highness. Sango's about to bring out some tea. Won't you stay a while longer?" Inutashio smiled.
"Forgive me, but I only came for clearance."
"Oh—well, hopefully we'll meet again." Inutashio nodded before turning back to face her. "How about you join us at the castle?" Kagome's smile faltered for a second.
"E-excuse me." She just had to open her big mouth.
"If all goes well today, then I insist that you join us for brunch in a few days. Perhaps the queen will enjoy your company."
"The queen…" Kagome tried to remain at ease, but she had no idea how to respond. Pretending to be a lady for a few minutes was nothing, but now she was supposed to go up in front of the family as someone entirely different from herself. This was like pouring salt onto the wound.
"It's a great idea father." Inuyasha said. Kagome wanted to scream at him. Why would he do this to her.
"M-My Lords, I'm sure the last thing you'd want to do is trouble yourself over me."
"No trouble at all." Kagome laughed nervously. She was doing so well, it would be suspicious if she declined.
"What a lovely idea, your highness."
"Splendid." Inutashio said. "See you in a few days." He nodded at Inuyasha before heading out to the door.
The two knew better, they had to keep up this charade until his father's demon ears could no longer hear them. They waited until he was out of ear shot, then Inuyasha embraced Kagome tightly.
"I'm so proud of you, Kagome." He then smelled tears coming from her. "What's the matter, love?" She hugged him closer.
"I'm just so happy to see you." He smiled, not letting go.
"I'm happy to see you as well."
"I was so scared. I thought he'd find out." Inuyasha shushed her, kissing her head.
"You did wonderfully. You even fooled me."
"Yes but he wants me to join you all for brunch. I couldn't say no. What am I going to do? He's going to catch me. I know nothing about proper etiquette."
"Shh. I'm sure Miroku and Sango will help you with everything you need to learn."
"But what if I mess up?"
"You won't, and I'll be there to protect you." Kagome blushed at his words as he continued kissing her hands. "And you don't need to ask for it. I'll always protect you. Remember that." She nodded with a smile. Inuyasha then leaned to her, capturing her lips with his.
Maybe it'll be alright after all.
I hope it'll work.
