A/N: So I just noticed a discrepancy. In the beginning James was the one who hired someone and in the last chapter I believe I alluded to the fact that he may be working for someone. Ignore that. LOL. Someone also mentioned in a review that 5 years seemed too long and unrealistic to wait over a small fallout, but for her it wasn't samll and it started as a one shot so I never changed it after I decided to make it a story. Anyway, hope you enjoy. I'm no writer but it is fun to me. Review / Subscribe : )
The next morning they both woke up with bags under their eyes. To say they were sexually frustrated was the understatement of the year. All night Olivia's body was calling out to Fitz. On top of that she was anxious to hear about his meeting later that night. How bad could it really be? She thought.
She was so distracted she couldn't even recall how her day went at work or whom she had seen. This is terrible; she couldn't afford mistakes now that any little thing she did could be used against her in some way. She briefly wondered what Fitz actually did during the day. Did he go in or did he work solely from home? She wasn't sure since as of late he had agreed to be her ride to and from work. She hated the idea of needing a babysitter but she wasn't going to push the fact that she way a grown woman; He was well aware of that for several reasons.
Later she sat flipping through channels as he prepared to leave. She finally decided to watch Jumping the Broom, a movie she hadn't seen since it came out in theaters. He leaned over the back of the couch to kiss her temple and say he'd be back as soon as possible.
On the drive to Jake's place Fitz was getting nervous. This never happened since he liked to maintain a professional distance from his cases but this time was different. When he pulled up he took out his cell phone to see if maybe Olivia had called him for something. Once he saw that he didn't have any missed calls he got out and knocked twice, paused, then knocked three more times. Jake cracked the door and upon seeing whom it was he opened it wider.
"What do you have for me?" asked Fitz as he sat at the kitchen table that was littered in papers.
"Hello to you too," Jake laughed. He began," Well, where should I start? Cyrus Beene isn't who he seems. But then again neither was her father. Rowan Pope was a spy for the US Government. He had been working for them for more than half of his life. His wife, Maya Pope, dropped out of school upon meeting him. She thought they could get married and be normal despite her husband's job. Until he was assigned a mentee. Pretty, young, intelligent. Top of her class at Yale. Somehow she had a change of heart and wanted to do her patriotic duty except apparently she viewed Rowan as a part of that duty. Rowan was more than just a spy. He traded government secrets with terrorist groups and when Paige found out she threatened to expose him if he didn't leave his wife for her. He wouldn't agree to it. He had decided to get out but Paige wouldn't hear of it so she showed up at the Pope residence with the intentions of getting caught. Because she knew Rowan's secret he couldn't just cut her off without things getting messy. So when Maya had decided that enough was enough, Rowan got drunk and in a rage he killed Paige. After that he had to disappear, for good. It broke his heart and he knew it would break Olivia's even further. Somehow, Jake knows all of this."
"What does this have to do with Cyrus? I don't understand."
"Olivia. She's the tie to all of this. Cyrus will do anything to protect her. And… He helped cover it all up. He wasn't clever enough for Mrs. Pope though because she found out, little by little and she started piecing things together. That's why she killed herself. She couldn't live with the fact that she didn't even know her own husband."
Fitz sat there with his mouth hanging open. "But why? He doesn't even work for the government. Do you know anything else?" asked Fitz.
"No, not yet but I'm close."
"Okay. I need to tell Olivia. She's going to be devastated but she deserves to know. Shit, I cant believe this."
"Sir, that may not be the brightest idea. At least leave out Cyrus' involvement for now. You don't want her to sabotage his campaign on purpose and get hurt in the process. You know how women are. Very emotional creatures."
"You're right," Fitz agreed.
He was in a daze from the moment he pulled out of Jake's driveway and into his own. He knew what he'd do. He would buy some Chinese for them to eat as a distraction so that maybe she wouldn't pick up on his hesitancy.
The second time he arrived she met him at the door.
"I thought I heard you pull up like 30 minutes ago?" she asked quizzically.
"Yeah but I was hungry and figured you may be too so I went to grab some Chinese, hope that's okay," he kissed her quickly as he made his way into the kitchen. He tried not to be obvious about wanting to get away from his prying eyes.
"You'd think I was the devil the way you just ran away from me. Is there a fire under your ass or something?"
"He laughed nervously, "You're imagining things. Don't worry so much. I'm just anxious to start eating."
"I know you Fitz. You're avoiding something, hiding something, or both. Out with it. It's about the meeting isn't it?" When he didn't respond, she looked at him for a moment. "There's something I don't need to know isn't there? You're afraid I'll try and run right?"
Up until her last statement Fitz had been avoiding her gaze as he slowly ate his dinner. But he suddenly looked up. It was so quick, a flicker, that if she hadn't been focusing on his every move she would have missed it. Slowly, she nodded her head. She sighed as she spoke, "I get it. Honestly I do. Well not really, but I'm trying to understand. I mean it's my life on the line here potentially. But I have to learn to trust you eventually. Why not start now?"
He was so relieved to hear those words. "That's all I want right now Livvy. Things are about to get so much more complicated in your life and I need you to trust that I wont leave your side when things take a turn for the worst because I hate to say it but they will."
She didn't know what to make of that statement. Being Olivia Pope she wanted to turn it inside out until she got to its true meaning. Baby steps, she thought. She really hated being so indecisive and that's all that she'd been since finding out about James and his hired gun. Oh God…Hired Gun. This is way more serious than I realized.
"Do what you need to do."
"This means I'm going to dig deeper into your past and I may not find favorable things. Your parents, your stepdad, you… We may find out that no one is who he or she seems to be. Can you deal with the ramifications of that?" Fitz asked, putting down his fork and walking around to hold her.
She peered up into his eyes, "Whatever it is, they were adults. They knew what they were getting themselves into. I just, it's time I start to think about me for a minute. It's always been about others and I think that's part of the reason I am so messed up. Like I said, Do what you have to do."
"I love you."
"I love you too. Now let's eat. The food is getting cold and I was hoping to cuddle before bed if that's okay with you." She said sheepishly.
He rolled his eyes heavenward, replying, "As if you didn't kill me last night. Do you know how hard it is, literally, to sleep when you know the formidable Olivia Pope is under the same roof a you?"
"Oh please, it couldn't be that bad. I'm hardly what you'd call gorg—" he interrupted her.
"Don't you dare say it; God broke the mold when he created you!"
She laughed out loud as she playfully slapped him and began to dig into her food. This moment was nice. They were far from normal as he had reminded her but for a small slice of time they could pretend.
