Chapter Ten
Maddy and Becky shot at their attackers. However, it was just then when Maddy remembered that their guns had no effect on the Cult of Skaro. The two enemy daleks stood there, motionless and without any kind of fear.
"Gallifrey!" Maddy cursed. "Stupid shielding!"
"Follow or die," one of the enemy daleks ordered in a high pitched, almost snooty voice.
"Do you know me?" the Doctor asked, not expecting an answer. "I am the Doctor. I am the Oncoming Storm, and I am not going anywhere! Whatever your purpose is here, I order you to leave."
"We are in control, Doctor. You must obey," the other enemy dalek stated. "You and the Bad Wolf have slaughtered many daleks. Now you will face your exterminator."
Obedient and defeated, the four walked with the Cult of Skaro. All that they had gone through, and they were stopped as soon as they entered the ship. It was embarrassing.
"Doctor, those daleks do not sound normal," Rose pointed out.
"The Cult of Skaro were permitted to have more emotions than normal daleks," the Doctor explained. "They are very special. The daleks' secret weapon, if you will."
Eventually, they came to the captain's quarters. There, a black dalek stood, waiting.
"Well, Sec," the Doctor greeted. "We meet at last."
"Yes. Now tell me, Doctor, why have you allied yourself with these rogues?" Sec hissed.
Becky and Maddy ignored the insult, knowing that Sec was far more conniving and cruel than normal daleks and would make their execution more painful if they annoyed him. He certainly had the weapons to do so.
"They are not pathetic," the Doctor growled. "They are strong, and their free emotions make them so. You of all daleks should know this, Sec."
"Emotions are irrelevant. They are weak," Sec spat. "Only the Cult of Skaro has true strength!"
"So they are simply a coincidence, then," the Doctor said shrewdly. "And you just used them to lure me here."
"Correct!" Sec explained. "The Empress ordered me to destroy them. In my eye, however, they served a useful purpose."
"Ah, so you are betraying your Empress," the Doctor realized. "How would she feel about this?"
"She no longer feels anything," Sec spat. "She is dead!"
"Who killed her?" the Doctor inquired.
"I exterminated her!" Sec snarled.
All four prisoners were taken aback.
"But… why?" Becky asked, stunned.
"I was her second-in-command. She ordered me to destroy you rogues instead of allowing me to terminate my real target, the Doctor," Sec explained. "Now that she is gone, I am the new Dalek Emperor! The Cult of Skaro is now supreme! She no longer interferes with my plans."
"Wait, how could you possibly have killed her?" Rose probed. "Does she not have guards?"
"I exterminated her using a weapon I invented," Sec began to reveal his evil plot. "It is the same weapon that will exterminate you: The very first C.E.D.D."
"No!" The Doctor was taken aback. "No, you did not!"
"What is a C.E.D.D.? Rose asked.
"It stands for Controlled Electric Deorganifying Disintegrator," the Doctor said. "There was talk on Gallifrey about daleks making these, but the technology required was too advanced for the time. It must be an application on Sec's computer. He would feed it coordinates, and it would send electric beams to the area. The beams disintegrate any organic matter. But altering the electricity in that way would require very advanced technology, too advanced for ordinary daleks."
"I will make more," Sec hissed. "They entire dalek fleet will have computers with C.E.D.D. applications. The universe will fall under my command. Contemplate that, Doctor, while you and your associates die!"
"I can still beat you, though," the Doctor said.
"How?" Sec was perplexed. "I have guards, shielding, and a destructive super weapon. What do you have?"
"I can beat you because I am quite impressive, a genius really! And you are a bit thick!" the Doctor taunted.
Sec was speechless.
"You went to the effort of sending waves to scramble my sonic screwdriver all over London, but you didn't scramble the signals inside your own starship! If I am right (and I usually am,) my sonic screwdriver will work in here!"
Immediately, he pointed his sonic at the ship's computer, causing lights to flicker on the console directly in front of Sec.
"Doctor! What have you done?" Sec demanded.
"Well… I activated the C.E.D.D. To be precise, I fed it coordinates for your console," the Doctor answered glibly. "And now…" he raised the screwdriver again.
"You cannot do this!" Sec cried.
"Oh, I think you'll find that I can."
"Doctor," Rose pleaded, "you have to give him a chance."
"Rose, with him in charge, there will be no stopping them! They'll destroy everything. You don't know what they're capable of, The Cult of Skaro."
"But I know what you're capable of, Doctor… and it's not this." She rested a hand on his arm.
"I am Dalek Sec! I am supreme! I shall not be destroyed!" Sec blared.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. The Earth is in danger, Rose. You are in danger. I have to do this," the Doctor declared. Suddenly, red electric beams started to flow into Sec's suit. Sec's eyestalk, glowing malevolent and blue, suddenly turned off and drooped. He was dead.
"I contained the blast so that the C.E.D.D. would not destroy us," the Doctor said. "Unfortunately, that means that they," he gestured to the two remaining members of the Cult of Skaro, "were not destroyed either."
The four prisoners turned around, nervously watching the two enemy daleks, and they all instinctively backed away from the threat.
"Now, what will you do, Doctor?" the dalek with the high-pitched voice asked rhetorically. "The C.E.D.D. is useless to you. If you activate it at this close range, you too will die. You have no other weapons that affect us."
Maddy and Becky pointed their guns at the daleks.
"Your weapons cannot destroy us. However, your courage is admirable," the other dalek said, imposing her power and intimidating them with her false compliment.
"But, we are not trying to destroy you," Becky told them. As if bonded by a telepathic link, Becky and Maddy shot the enemy daleks. They went flying backwards as the lasers hit them. They were completely out of control and slammed into a faraway wall.
With no apparent regret, the Doctor fed the C.E.D.D. the floundering daleks' coordinates, and activated the program. The red beams flew into their casings. They each screamed one last time before being disintegrated.
The Doctor then pointed his sonic probe at the computer. "I have set it on a time-delayed trajectory into high orbit. It is programmed to self-destruct when it is safely away from the Earth," he explained. "We have eighty rels before the program activates! Move!"
Becky, Maddy, Rose, and lastly, the Doctor bolted for the hole in the ship's hull. When they reached it, Rose jumped on Becky and the Doctor jumped on Maddy. They flew out of the hole, putting a safe distance between themselves and the starship. They watched safely from the ground as the Cult of Skaro's invisible starship exploded, a fiery burst in the sky.
"Goodbye Cult of Skaro, and goodbye C.E.D.D." the Doctor sighed in relief.
