Chapter 11

The cabin in the mountains was small but cozy, Christine and Phillippe arrived to it in the evening. The cousins of Phillippe camped a half mile away from the cabin, and would be heading home in the morning. Phillippe carried Adelyn into the cabin bridal style, and lit the fire place as the cabin was a bit cold.

They sat on some cushions on the floor, eat bread, cheese, and drank honey wine, that Adelyn's father had made especially for their honeymoon. As the cabin warmed up, so did Adelyn, and Phillippe, but in a different way. Soon they were taking each other's clothes off, and kissing, the consummation of their marriage that night, was one that Phillippe would keep in his heart for the rest of his life.

The next morning found the newly married couple sleeping in each other's arms in front of the fire. Later that day they went for a walk in the forest, and eat a lite lunch by the creek. Phillippe also saw an opportunity to bring down a duck with one of his arrows. Adelyn told him, "You are such a good hunter Phillippe." He responded, "And you are an excellent cook my wife, I am sure you'll cook this duck to perfection." They kissed, and saw a perfect opportunity to wash up, and enjoy each other before hitting back to the cabin.

The honeymoon was coming to an end, and the young couple could not understand where time had gone. On their last day, Adelyn was baking fresh bread, to go with a squirrel stew that she was cooking. In the meantime, Phillippe was carving. Adelyn asked "What are you carving?" The young man answered, "A carving of you, and I on our wedding day, to help us to remember that day forever." The young wife smiled, walked to look at the carving, and said, "You are so talented my husband." She kissed him, and he responded passionately, later that day they had to eat extra crispy bread with their stew."

The next morning after cleaning the cabin, and locking it up it was time to go back home. They took their time, and stopped to eat on their way back, as well as to admire the beauty of the forest. They were in no rush of getting back.

While the young couple was enjoying their honeymoon, Aramis was at a ceremony where he became the superior of the Jesuits in France. He decided he would take his position seriously, and lead his flock to obtain justice, and freedom. He knew it was a dangerous position, but it was kept secret from anyone that did not belong to the order, to grant the superior some anonymity, and safety.

At the palace the young monarch continued to party, and to spend money on completely unnecessary things. Currently he was posing for his third portrait in the past twelve months, he already had more paintings than the past 3 kings put together. His mother continued to pray for him, and hoped he would change his ways. It was hard for her to see how vain, and self-centered Louis was. She wished he was a little more like D'Artagnan, and Phillippe.

Phillippe and Adelyn came home to a nice meal prepared by Margie, and the whole family was waiting for them. They could not have been happier to be back home to start their new life. Adelyn's things had been moved to the bedroom of Phillippe, as they would be living at the country house with D'Artagnan. The house was spacious enough, as Alexander, and Francesca had decided to stay in their cottage, it would have been hard for them to move because had decades of happy memories there.

That night Adelyn told Phillippe, "I promise you my husband, that I will try to make you happy in everything, and take good care of the house, and your father." The young husband said, "You already make me the happiest man that has ever lived, and I know what an excellent housekeeper, and cook you are, I have no doubt that you are the best wife ever. I just hope to make you happy, and provide for you all that you need." Adelyn, said before kissing him, "Of that I have no doubt my dear husband, you have been making me happy, and providing for me since the day we first met."

The next morning the couple went about their daily chores with happiness in their hearts. After breakfast Phillippe went to check on the fields, and his father took him to the river to talk to him. D'Artagnan told his son, "Tell me my son, did you, and Adelyn have a good time at the cabin?" Phillippe smiled, and said, "The best time I have had in my life so far. Thank you for the cabin, and all that you have done for me, and my wife, I love her so much." The musketeer replied, "All that is mine, is yours Phillippe, and you work as hard, if not harder than I do."

Adelyn was happy that she had Margie to help her, as the house was much bigger than the cottage where she had been living. She took her responsibilities as the woman of the house seriously, and decided to cook dinner herself that night. She also had Margie help her make the favorite pastries of Phillippe.

The months past in domestic happiness, and the harvesting time came. Phillippe was working hard one afternoon when his cousin Michelle approached him. They both rode their horses to the river, and sat in one of the benches that Phillippe had carved.

They both looked at the river, and after a few minutes Michelle said, Phillippe, I want you to come with me, I am planning to propose marriage to Aida the sister of Andre, do you remember her? D'Artagnan the youngest laughed, and his cousin gave him a friendly punch on the shoulder. The File de France told his cousin, "I found all those trips you've been taking quite suspicious, but I am very happy for you. I tell you, there is nothing better than being married to the woman you love."

Michelle said, "Seeing you so happy has inspired me to seek the same type of happiness. I feel bad for my sister Christine; she has to wait until Raoul is able to take a long leave of absence to get married." Phillippe replied, "I am sure that Raoul will do his best to get married as soon as possible, he truly loves your sister."

The next weekend Adelyn was waving to her husband, and praying for a safe trip for him. She would miss her Phillippe, but was happy for Michelle, and hoped that Aida would accept marrying him. D'Artagnan had decided to accompany his son, and his nephew, as he did not trust the family of Andre completely with regards to Phillippe.

Serge and Jean were going to be spending the weekend at the country house to keep Adelyn company. She however managed to make it to the cottage of the grandparents of Phillippe, where Francesca, Giana, and Christine were waiting for her. The women said they were going to church, and to the market. However once in town they went to the house of the local midwife who was the daughter of the midwife that had delivered Giana's children.

Christine was very interested in the examination, and the questions that the midwife had to ask. The name of the midwife was Fontaine. She asked Adelyn, "Tell me Madam D'Artagnan, how has your food been agreeing with you." Adelyn responded, "I feel sick in the mornings, and is hard to keep food down." They continued the conversation, and then Fontaine manually examined the abdomen of Adelyn. Afterwards the women went to church, and then back home.

In the meantime, at the Palace Louis was organizing a party where some of his musketeers would be able to bring some of their families to the Palace. Raoul was very excited, and when he went home he told his father, "I think I am going to travel to get Christine for the party, and then maybe the King will give me the leave of absence that I need to get married. Athos saw nothing wrong with it, and told his son, "I will go with you when the time comes, I want to see you married, and with children before I die."

Raoul told his father, "Don't talk like that father you are still a young man, and as healthy as a horse." Athos laughed, and responded, "Appearances can be deceiving my son, I hope that you are smarter when it comes to buying a horse, than when you look at your father." Raoul laughed with his father, and they both decided to eat dinner, and drink wine to end the day.

Over at the house of Aida all had gone well with the marriage negotiations, and it was agreed that the young couple would get married a month after the harvest was finished. On the way back D'Artagnan told his nephew, "I am happy for you Michelle, you are going to be needing a house to live in, I think that if all the family comes together we can build you, and Aida a small Country house, made of rock and wood panels, with glass windows." Michelle said, "I don't know uncle that sounds expensive."

The former musketeer said, "I am not going to tell you that is going to be cheap, but you have worked hard in the family business, and we can afford it. Now don't think it will be something grand, but a one story 3-bedroom house, with a kitchen, and office for you, a sitting, and dining room, but you can expand on it later if you want." Michelle smiled, and said, "Thank You uncle, you are like a father to me, and my siblings. I have no words to express my gratitude, but by telling you that I love you the same as a I loved my father when he was a life."

The musketeer smiled and said, "I do what I can Michelle, and I try to honor the memory of your father by taking care of his family. Now why don't we try to do some hunting on our way back home." The three men smiled, and started looking for prey, they were mostly looking for ducks, and Pheasants. They did not want large game that would slow them down.

The travelers made it home, and Adelyn ran out to great Phillippe, after kissing, he said, "I missed you, and I brought you a Pheasant back, to show that I did not stop thinking of you." Adelyn said, "I missed you too, and I have your favorite pork stew, and pastries waiting for you." D'Artagnan and Serge smiled at the young couple. Jean asked his father worriedly, "Is that going to happened to me too father? Am I going to go mad for a girl?

Serge and D'Artagnan laughed. Serge patted the head of his son, and told him, "It happens to the best of us son, that is the way I felt about your mother. It will happen to you one day, but don't worry about it. It will come over you, without you even noticing, and by the time you realize it, you'll be so happy, that you will want to continue being madly in love."

Phillippe joined the conversation, and said, "You know Jean we can hear you, but I will not deny it I am madly in love with your sister." Adelyn did not take it as well, she pulled on her brother's ear, and told him, "Now you think just because I am married you can get away with calling me mad, don't forget who saws your clothes, and bakes you treats, unless you are planning to do that for yourself." Then she stormed into the house, surprising the men, Adelyn generally did not take things so seriously, and no one could remember the last time she had reproached her brother.

Phillippe told poor Jean, "Don't worry, I'll go and see what is going on with your sister, and she will be back to herself in not time." Phillippe followed Adelyn into the house, and found her crying, he hugged her, and ran his hand through her hair, wondering what had gotten in to his wife.

For the next week Adelyn kept throwing up in the mornings, and Phillippe became concerned when he noticed she was pale. He talked told his father, "I think Adelyn has been under a lot of pressure, and I am afraid she is getting sick, I would like to take her to the cabin for a couple of days, would that be acceptable to you, as we are almost at the end of the harvesting season." D'Artagnan looked at his son proudly, and told him, "I am happy to see that you are a good caring husband to Adelyn, go and take your wife to the cabin, but stay at least 3 days, I think you are right she needs some fresh air, and relaxation."

The next day at around noon the couple was on their way to the cabin. Adelyn kept telling Phillippe that it was unnecessary, as she was perfectly fine, and did not need to get away. When they got to the cabin Adelyn was very tired, and ended up falling asleep in a rocking chair. Now that really worried Phillippe, who grabbed his rosary, and started praying while kneeling by Adelyn.

When Adelyn woke up she saw her husband praying on his knees with a worried expression on his face. She smiled at him and asked, "What has you so worried my love? Still kneeling Phillippe took her hands, kissed them, and said, "I am worried about you, it seems to me that you are sick, when we get back we should go, and see the doctor for you." Adelyn was going to wait a few more weeks, but she could not let he husband worrying for so long.

Adelyn looked at Phillippe's eyes, and told him, "Don't worry Phillippe, I am not sick." Phillippe interrupted, and said, "But you are, your stomach has been sick every day, you look pale, and you went to sleep in the middle of the day, that is not like you." Adelyn smiled again, and said, "As I was saying, I am not sick, but I have some good news for you, Phillippe in a few months you are going to be a father."

Phillippe who was still kneeling by Adelyn, was so surprised that he lost his balance, and landed on his behind. It took him a couple of minutes, and then he said "I am going to be a father! I am going to be a father!" He jumped to his feet, and picked Adelyn up in his arms spinning her around, then he said, "That is wonderful news my love, thank you, but is it normal for you to be sick each day?" His wife responded, "While you were away, I went to see the midwife, and she told me the way I am feeling is completely normal for a woman carrying a baby."

The rest of the time at the Cabin was spent planning for the baby. Phillippe decided to go, and find a tree to use to make a nice cradle for the baby, Adelyn sat nearby while he cut the three down. He said, "I can't wait to start carving this cradle for our baby, I am going to make it as pretty as I can." Adelyn told him, "Of that I am sure, our baby is going to be so lucky to have you as his father." He kissed her, and said, "Our baby is going to have the best mother, and I will do my best to be a good father."

The months passed, and Adelyn started showing, D'Artagnan could not be happier, he was going to be a grandfather! He sent word to Anne who was overjoyed, and started knitting baby clothes. Her attendants did not think much of it, after all one-day King Louis would have to have a son, and it was natural for the Queen mother, to start preparing the layette for the future king.

The harvest season came to an end, and the D'Artagnan family traveled to a Village that was one day away by horse, to attend the wedding of Michelle, and Aida. The family had worked hard between harvesting, making wine, and building a house for Michelle, they were looking forward to a few days of rest.

The wedding was typical of a small French village, and not that different from the one of Phillippe, and Adelyn. Andre invited Raoul to the wedding, and it worked well, as Raoul would take Christine with him from the wedding, to be able to take her to the party at the palace. Athos also attended.

D'Artagnan, and Athos had some time to talk while at the wedding. Athos said, "How are things going for you? D'Artagnan responded, "Better that I ever imagined, I am going to be a grandfather, my winery is growing, and the harvest was abundant. My life would be perfect, if I could only have Anne at my side." Athos patted the back of his friend, there was nothing to be said regarding the situation of the Queen mother, and the Musketeer.

After drinking another cup of wine, D'Artagnan asked, "How is your life going my friend?" Athos said, "I cannot complain, but I'll be happier once Raoul, and Christine are married. I want to see my son settled, and with a family before I die." D'Artagnan asked worriedly, "Are you sick Athos?" The older man laughed, and said, "No, unless you consider old age an illness." The former captain said, "Athos, don't go scaring your friends like this, you are not that old."

The next morning Christine left to Paris with Athos, and Raoul. Giana was worried, but she could not travel with her eldest daughter, as she could not leave her other children alone. Michelle, and Aida were going to go, and visit a paternal aunt of Michelle that had not been able to make it to the wedding, and a brother of Aida, that had not been able to make it, because his wife was about to give birth. After visiting their relatives, they would go to stay at Phillippe's cabin for the rest of their honeymoon.

Over at the palace the last details for the party were being discussed, and Louis was trying on his new costume to make sure it fit him properly, he had also order a new crown, that had olive branches made out of gold. Anne was hoping to leave after the party to visit D'Artagnan, Phillippe, and Adelyn, who now was her daughter in-law.

Finally, the much awaited party at the palace started that morning. Louis was dressed in a white costume, with golden rims, and decoration. He was wearing his olive branch crown. He went to the front of the palace, and after giving a speech released a small pig, that had a diamond on his "unicorn" horn. Christine, and Raoul started running after the pig, the same as the other guest. While Christine was running after the pig, she happened to come upon the King. She curtsied, and was surprised at how much the King resembled her cousin Phillippe, even if she already knew that they were identical twins.

Louis was taken with Christine, being so vain, he did not realize that the reason he liked Christine, was because he could see some features of himself in her, after all they were cousins. Raoul ended up catching the pig, and the price diamond for Christine. Louis ordered some of his men to inquire who Christine was.

During the outdoor party there was an attempt against Louis life by a peasant, fortunately enough one of the young musketeers was able to save him. Finally, the time for the dance came. Anne decided to attend the dance, as she had a bad feeling about it.

As always Louis entered the dance regally, the guest curtsied, an opened a path for him to reach his throne. Anne entered a half hour later, and went to sit by her son. Louis had invited the daughter of a Duke to be his dance partner for the night, they knew each other since they were children. Louis, and Claudia his companion were dancing with the rest of the guest when no other than the current captain of the musketeers attempted to kill Louis. It was chaotic, Louis was lucky, and got away with only a small cut to his right shoulder.

The captain of the musketeers did not make it out of the room a life. The only way to subdue him had been to kill him. The Queen mother made it to Louis side, as fast as possible, while maintaining her decorum. Louis was shaken, and angry but accepted the hug that his mother gave him, and let her stay by his side while the royal physician treated him at his room. The musketeer had missed Louis chest thanks to the fast reflexes the King had inherited from D'Artagnan, and the intervention of the nearby guests, and musketeers. Anne was very concerned for Louis, if they could not even trust their musketeers, then who could they trust? How she wished D'Artagnan was there, she was sure he would know what to do to protect their son.

Thanks to staying with Louis, Anne found out his plan for Christine. Anne was very worried; she could not let Louis dishonor his own cousin. She cared for Christine, as she had come to know her in her visits to her son. She knew the young woman was engaged to the son of Athos, who had always been a loyal musketeer. She had to protect her.
