All The Possibilities
"J-John?" Mai asked, calling out to him. At first it seemed the boy didn't even notice her. This concerned her. "John what are you-ah doing?"
"It's a shame really," John spoke up. he turned his attention from the streets below to the sky above. "You would think the almighty God would forgive a simple mistake. Yet he didn't. He just...punished me."
"What are you talking about?" Mai asked. She knew now beyond any doubt that he was possessed and that the ghost was speaking to her. John would never say anything like that. "Why don't you come down from there and we can talk about it, okay? Maybe I can help." John turned to glance at her slightly.
"Do you really think I am that stupid?" He asked, a second voice tracing his own. Though, he did turn to the side, facing her more. "Come down there? Why? So you can push me off yourself? All because of a mistake that wasn't my own fault?" Mai had gotten completely lost in that, but she stayed focus on his movements, making sure he didn't move forward. "My only chance to prove myself was taken and now I'm stuck living in this rotten world. How could someone of the likes of you help me?"
"I can find a way but-" Mai cut herself off. She didn't want to say 'jumping off the roof and killing yourself wont do anything' because she didn't want to picture John doing such a thing. "Look I can help you."
"No one can help me." John's voice was gone and it was replaced with a woman's. Mai felt herself tense and before she could do anything, she was no longer on the roof. She was in the hotel hallway. She looked around confused for a moment before she heard a door open behind her. She turned to find a woman with beautiful black hair coming out, tears streaming down her face. Her clothes were barely on her and she had to hold them up to keep herself covered. Mai suddenly felt sadden for the woman and she watched as the woman walked past her. As she walked by, Mai moved out of the way but the woman stopped. She turned her head and looked Mai right in the eyes.
"I-ah-"Mai tried to put worlds together but before she could, she heard someone call out to her.
"MAI!" Mai snapped herself out of it and looked up to see John slowly leaning forward.
"John!" Mai screamed as Naru ran past her. She quickly ran after him and as Naru flung half of himself over the edge, she heard a loud noise. "No!" Mai screamed fearing the worst. She ran right into the ledge and looked over to find John hanging there, Naru's grip barely holding on. "John! Take my hand!" Mai screamed, throwing her hand out to him. She knew Naru wasn't strong enough to hold John up by himself. John looked up at her hand, but didn't make a move to take it. "John!" Mai screamed watching Naru begin to clench his teeth. She could tell John was starting to slip out of his hands.
"I hate people like you," Came a whisper in her ear. Mai felt a chill go down her spine as a cold breeze surrounded her. Slowly, she looked over her shoulder to find nothing standing there. She breathed a sigh of relief but the bad feeling she had still hung there. Then suddenly, something grabbed her arm. Just as she looked back over the edge, she felt herself beginning to fall.
"Mai!" Naru screamed and before Mai realized what was going on, she found herself slamming into the side of the building.
"Huh?" She looked up to find herself hanging over the ledge, the only thing keeping her from falling was John's arm. She looked at him and saw a wicked smile on his face, one that was not his own. "...no..." She whispered. Fear flooded her as the realization hit her. He had pulled her over the building and he was going to let her fall.
"Mai hold on!" Naru said, struggling to keep the two of them up. Naru could barely hold just John, how was he going to hold both of them?
"...John...please...don't," Mai whispered, but it went unheard. Something began to wrap itself around her ankles and legs and soon, it felt as if a heavy weight was trying to pull her down. "Please...John I know you're in there. Please don't do this."
"It's you're fault," The female voice spoke through John's mouth before he opened her hand.
For a moment, Mai felt suspended in air for a moment. As if she wasn't falling, but she wasn't flying either. She was just there. Then, she felt the rush of wind hit her and she let out a scream.
"No!" The call from Naru was lost in the wind brushing past her ears. All noise had faded and she found herself closing her eyes, not wanting to see herself sinking lower to the earth.
"Mai!" A voice that seemed almost in her hear screamed out as something wrapped around her arm. A sharp pain and a loud cracking noise consumed her shoulder before she hit the buildings wall. Scared to open her eyes, she just hung there for a moment, wondering if she was dead. "Mai can you hear me?" Mai snapped her eyes open and looked to find the worried face of Lin staring down at her. He was half way out the window, his arm stretched out and holding onto hers with a tight grip. "Are you alright?"
"Ah-yea," Mai mumbled, not sure how to respond. She was a little confused on the situation, but she pushed it to the back of her mind as he began to pull her up.
"Do you got them?" She heard a yell below and looked to find Bou-san with his head out the window a story below.
"Yes," Lin called. He easily lifted Mai up into the window. As Mai got level with the window, she used her feet to place her butt of the windowsill so to balance herself. "You okay? Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm fine, I think." Mai said as she looked down below. The ground had gotten a lot closer then before but as she looked up to the roof, she saw Naru and Yasuhara pulling John over the ledge about three stories up. "How did you-?"
"Takigawa noticed that there was a first wife mentioned in the file and that she was very religious," Lin explained as he scooped Mai up and helped her through the window. "When Naru noticed Father Brown acting strange, Naru realized something was up. He told me to go to this floor and Bou-san to go to a lower one just in case something happened." Mai breathed a slight of relief. She could still feel her heart rate skyrocketing from the fall, but she didn't care. She was safe.
No! screamed a voice. This isn't far! I shouldn't be suffering for his mistake! It is because of him I am stuck here! It is because of you that I have to live like this!
"Are you sure you're okay?" Mai opened her eyes at the sound of Lin's voice and looked up at him. He was looking at her with a worried yet confused expression and Mai just nodded her head.
When had I closed my eyes? Mai thought to herself. She then realized that Lin was still holding her up and she felt her face go red. Noticing this, Lin sat her down on the bed in the room. Why is he still so close? Mai thought to herself. Even though he had placed her down and she was now safe, he was still standing so close, as if he was afraid that if he left, she would fall.
"Mai!" Bou-san yelled as he ran into the room. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Mai said, watching Lin out of the corner of her eye. He took a step back but still remained close to her. Bou-san didn't seem to notice this at all, but he did notice Mai's face go slightly more red.
"Are you sure? We called an ambulance for John, do you need one?" Bou-san looked her up and down, noticing and moving her arms to make sure everything worked okay.
"No, I said I'm-ow!" Mai curled in on herself as the pain began to return. She grabbed her shoulder as tears began to fill her eyes. That was when she remembered she had heard a loud crack in her ear when Lin had grabbed her.
"Mai!" Both Lin and Bou-san grabbed her and tried to get her to show them what was wrong, but she wanted to stay curled up in her ball.
It's not fair. The voice she had heard before began to whisper in her ear once more. It should have been you. You are the reason he did this. You are the one who needs to die.
"Can you hear me, Mai?" She heard a voice call, but she couldn't tell who it was from. She felt more hands grab her and she slowly let those hands uncurl her as her head began to pound. The pain began to grow as the voice grew louder.
This is your fault. You need to die. You need to die. It is because of you that I am here. You must die.
"No!" Mai screamed as the pain spread from her head and down her spine. From there, it was like it coursed all through her body, growing hotter and hotter as it consumed her. "Leave me alone! I didn't do anything!" Mai realized that as she screamed, it wasn't her voice that was speaking. "It's not my fault! Leave me alone! Leave us alone!"
"Are you okay Veronica?" Matt asked as he tried to calm his breath. Him and Veronica had both run away from the hallway where Ronald had been and were now in a different one.
"I am, thank you," Veronica said as she looked at the ground. Matt smiled slightly and looked around, he knew it had been a while since the attack and it looked like it had gotten dark out, but that still made him feel uneasy. "But what about Savanna? And Victoria?"
"I'm sure they are fine," Matt smiled, hoping to reassure her, even though he did not believe it himself. He hadn't seen them all day and he was starting to grow worried. What if something had happened to them? What if they had gotten attacked again?
"Matt!" Matt turned to find Victoria and Savanna running towards them. "Matt, one of those people got possessed."
"I know, we were just there," Matt turned to face the red faced girl. "I hope he'll be okay."
"He?" Savanna tilted her head confused. She looked up at Victoria, who gave her the same look.
"We saw a girl," Victoria said, sounding a little confused. "She had brown hair and was following someone up the stairs. I think they were headed to the roof. Who did you see?"
"Some guy. He had glasses and orange-ish hair I think." Matt said, looking between the two girls. Veronica moved to stand next to Savanna and when she did, Savanna took her hand and held it in her own. It was as if the fight between them had never happened.
"That was over a day ago..." Victoria explained.
"Stupid time lack..." Matt said running his hand through his hair lazily. To him for some reason, time acted differently. It would either be slower or faster then Victorias and he would never know what day it was. "Well what should be do?"
"Probably hide for a little bit," Victoria shifted awkwardly. She seemed to be pale, or at least paler then what she usually was.
"Is something wrong?" Matt asked, noticing it almost immediately. Victoria grabbed her head as her breaths began to pick up.
"I-my head really hurts," Victoria said as her eyes closed. She then fell forward and Matt quickly reached out to get her.
"Victoria!" Matt yelled as she collapsed into his arms. She turned her over and laid her on the ground but her eyes were closed and she was becoming more pale. "Victoria! VICTORIA!"
