"Don't you look pretty?" Paige cooed to Olivia, holding her tight as she and Emily brought her into the mall. It was December, and now that Olivia was two, Paige and Emily had decided to take her to see Santa. They had no idea how it was going to go over, but they had dressed her up all nice in a red Christmas dress and done her raven hair up in little pigtails. She looked absolutely precious.
"Are you excited to see Santa, Liv?" Emily asked.
"Santa!"
"Are you going to tell Santa you've been a good girl?"
"Yeah!"
"Ready?" Paige asked, setting Olivia down as they reached the line to see Santa. "Smile real big for me and Mama so we can take pictures."
She had a bad feeling that Olivia was going to be terrified. She wasn't sure why, but she just didn't see someone her age taking kindly to being set down on a stranger's lap while her parents stepped away. Emily insisted they at least give it a try.
When it was their turn, the two women led Olivia to Santa. Olivia immediately started to look apprehensive, popping her thumb into her mouth. She clutched onto Emily's jacket with her other hand, staring at the strange man dressed in red.
"It's your turn, sweetie," Emily told her, lifting her onto Santa's lap. She and Paige stepped back as Olivia looked around wildly, her lip trembling. Paige was already starting to move back over to her as Olivia tilted her head back and started to scream.
"MOMMMMY! MAMA!"
"It's okay, baby," Paige soothed, lifting her into her arms. She held the sobbing girl tightly. "It's okay."
"Sorry," Emily told Santa, and he just chuckled.
"No worries. She's not the first and she won't be the last."
"It's okay, honey," Emily soothed her daughter as she and Paige left the Santa set up. "We're here."
"Mama," she sniffled as Emily gently touched her cheek.
"There's nothing to be afraid of," Paige told her, rubbing her back. "Santa is a nice man. He brings presents. You like presents, right?"
"Uh huh," Olivia replied, wiping her eyes.
"Well, Mommy and I will tell Santa what you want, okay?" Emily added. "Mommies can talk to Santa."
"What do you say we go get some dinner?" Paige asked.
"Sounds good to me," Emily agreed. "Liv, are you hungry?"
"Yeah," she replied, perking up.
"How about Johnny Rocket's? They have that yummy grilled cheese you like so much."
"Yeah!" she exclaimed again. Paige grinned at her wife.
"Well, that was easy."
Olivia got her grilled cheese as promised, and she forgot all about her earlier trauma with Santa. They had a nice dinner, and even though they were stuffed when they left, they were happy.
After dinner, they decided to drive around for a while and look at Christmas lights. Olivia fell asleep, as she always did, and when they got home Emily carried her up to her room. She barely woke up as she was changed into her pajamas and tucked into bed.
"Good night, sweetie," Emily whispered, and she and Paige each kissed her forehead. "We love you."
They left the room, Emily closing the door over behind them. Paige took her hand, pulling her towards the bedroom.
"Come here. I want to talk to you about something."
"Uh oh," Emily replied, following her wife to the bedroom. "Am I in trouble?"
"Jesus Em, you sound like me," Paige laughed, sitting down on the bed. "No, you're not in trouble. Here. Sit."
"Paige, what the fuck?" Emily asked, sitting down. She didn't know why, but she was nervous. Paige was never the instigator of "serious" discussions; the last time Paige had said they needed to talk, it was to tell her she had found a lump on her breast.
"Em, relax. It's nothing bad. Remember last week? When you were saying you wanted to have another baby?"
"Yeah."
"I want to, too. Have another baby."
"Are you sure?" Emily asked, a smile crossing her face. Paige had been reluctant about having another baby since she would have to carry it, but the desire for another child had won out over her fear.
"I'm sure. I want Olivia to have a brother or a sister."
"Me, too," Emily replied, hugging her tightly. "It's not that scary. I promise."
"Oh, I'm still scared. But it will be worth it."
"It will," Emily agreed. "When you feel that baby move inside of you for the first time⦠it's incredible."
"I know as long as you're by my side, I can do it," Paige whispered, leaning in to kiss her. "I love you, Em."
"I love you too, Paige," Emily whispered back, holding her close. "So much."
"I have to pee," Paige groaned, resting her head on the pillow. Emily chuckled, squeezing her hand.
"I know, baby."
"How have they not found a better way to do this yet?" she grumbled. She was almost four months pregnant and having her first ultrasound, and she was disgruntled with the thirty-two ounces of water she had been forced to drink.
"When you see our baby, you won't even have to go anymore," Emily replied as the door opened. "Trust me."
"Paige McCullers?" a young woman asked. "My name is Kate. I'll be doing your ultrasound today. Is your bladder nice and full?"
"Yes," Paige replied grumpily. Emily just smiled.
"Okay. This won't take long, I promise. I'm going to put some gel on your stomach, and it's going to be a little cold."
Paige winced as Kate rubbed the gel onto her. Emily held her hand tightly, smiling at her.
"It's okay," she told her softly.
"In just a couple minutes, I'll be able to show you your baby," Kate told them. "Were you looking to find out your baby's sex?"
"No, thank you," Emily replied. That was another topic they had spent a lot of time discussing. "We'd like it to be a surprise."
Paige watched the screen, waiting for her baby to appear and take her crankiness away. She certainly felt like she had spent her whole pregnancy being annoyed so far. Emily thought it was funny, which only served to piss her off further. She guessed it was the hormones, because she didn't really have a legitimate reason to be so put out all the time. Well, except for the fact that she always had to pee. And she was constantly horny. The never feeling full was pretty annoying, too.
But at the same time, it was an amazing feeling whenever she put her hand on her growing belly to know there was life in there. Life that she was nourishing and growing.
And then she saw it. The image of the tiny baby inside of her appeared on the screen and she gasped, tears filling her eyes. She had been there at Emily's ultrasound too, yet the feeling was just as incredible the second time.
"They're perfect," she whispered, her eyes fixed on the screen. All of her irritability was gone. That was their baby, its heartbeat steady.
"See?" Emily replied, her own eyes glistening with tears. "It's incredible."
Paige smiled, rubbing her swollen belly. Nothing could replicate the feeling of happiness that came from seeing their babies for the first time.
"I can't wait to meet you," she whispered, her hand resting on the bump. "I can't wait."
