AN: So, I'm sooo sorry for not updating sooner. Just because I haven't updated in a while, I've decided to be nice and update two chapters at once. I've had a lot of physical things going on with my health lately, so please excuse my long silence. I haven't forgotten. Promise.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Being in Gotham as Slade's apprentice rather than Robin the Boy Wonder, had a different feel to it. It made it all that much more gloomier. It was night of course. Slade liked to work at night. Robin had figured that much out from day one of meeting Slade.
Robin raced through the alley ways not needed directions. He knew Gotham like the back of his hand. There was radio silence. Though Robin knew where he was going, he didn't know what he'd be doing at this moment. He waited for Wintergreen to speak though, refusing to be the one to speak first.
"So, do I call you Dick or Robin?" Wintergreen asked after about ten minutes of silence. Robin rolled his eyes under the mask.
"Robin." He answered shortly. Wintergreen hummed over the line.
"You're going to need a new name soon since you're working with Slade now." Wintergreen said out loud. Robin didn't answer by felt anxiety about that. They planned to strip him of his title? Well, he supposed he shouldn't be surprised. He wasn't really 'Robin' anymore since he'd become a villain. However, the name was given to him by his mother, and he didn't want to lose it. "Of course that's something for you and Slade to discuss. None of my concern really." He paused. Robin still didn't reply, just making his way through the back allies trying not to be seen by anyone who'd recognize him. He stared down at his bracelet was an audible sigh. "Don't worry. It may seem bad now, but I promise Slade's not as bad of a man as he seems." Robin resisted the urge to snort at the man. "He really does care." Right. Robin thought.
"I appreciate the reassurance, but mind getting to business and actually telling me what I'm supposed to be doing?" Robin replied bitterly. He knew if he didn't Wintergreen would likely keep going.
"Right. I don't think I need to tell you how to break into the warehouse, but you'll be looking for the section B part of the warehouse. In section B, there's a box labeled 'Beta tester 5'. Crack it open and there should be a small machine in there. Slade's no interested in anything but the computerized chip in the mainframe. Take it out pocket it and then get out." Wintergreen informed.
"What's the chip for?" Robin asked though he didn't expect an answer.
"Eventually, he'll probably tell you." Wintergreen responded. Robin huffed. Of course. "I'm not allowed to tell his personal information, Robin. I'm sorry." Robin felt like it was actually a sincere apology. It made him pause a moment and consider the idea that Wintergreen could just be another victim of Slade's threats. Maybe Robin shouldn't be so hard on him. Maybe he could help him escape.
"What's Slade holding over you?" Robin asked.
"Excuse me?" Wintergreen sounded a little confused now.
"I mean, you can't be working for him willingly, so what's he got over you? Maybe I can help you." Robin replied, his hero instinct setting in.
"I work for Slade willingly." Wintergreen responded amused. Robin was silent as he took that in. He decided right then that despite Wintergreen's gentle tone, he didn't like him again. Anyone who worked for Slade willingly was an enemy in Robin's book.
"I'm at the warehouse. I request radio silence until the mission is complete." Robin said. There was no reply, so Robin took that as a yes. Breaking into the building was easy. Despite being a hero most his life, he could do criminal things almost just as well as he did his hero role. It was probably because Robin spent so much time training himself to be the best, meaning he had to be able to sneak and get pass security to do his hero job sometimes. While in Gotham, heroes were frowned upon and often him and Batman were on the run from the cops, at least towards the beginning. Jump city seemed to welcome the Titans with open arms. Even allowed them to build a tower that over looked the city.
Robin got pass all the guards, only having to knock two of them out on his way before finally making it to section B of the warehouse. The place was huge, but He could see the box labeled 'Beat Tester 5' easily. It was of course the one with a million caution signs on it. Robin picked up a crow bar from the table and cracked it open. Inside was a small device that looked similar to a death ray in Robin's opinion. He wondered what they could possibly be using this for, but didn't have the time to look into it.
Robin popped open the main frame and then clicked the computerize chip out of place in the machine. He put it in his sock because he didn't want to take a change if it fell out of his pocket. He'd always kept money in his sock incase he got robbed on his way home. It was just a safe place in his opinion to keep small valuable things.
Robin then went to exit the building. He tried going back the same way he came in, but he had to take a different path when he heard some guard coming down the hallway. It was fine. He knew how to get out going this way as well. He didn't think he'd run into any trouble, but half way down the hallway, he suddenly heard alarms blaring.
Crap!
He must've tripped a silent alarm. Robin felt his heart begin to race as he sprinted for the exit. He knew Wintergreen could hear the alarms blaring through the ear piece, but he remained silent. Guards begin pouring into the hallway and Robin could hear the chase was on.
"Stop!" The guards yelled, but of course Robin didn't. "Stop or we'll shoot!" They yelled. Crap! Robin thought again. He took a sharp left turn and burst through the doors leading into an alley. He could hear guns firing behind him. He needed to get away. Robin took a brief moment to look behind him to see how far his pursuers were from him. They were further back than he'd thought. Good.
Robin took another sharp right in the allies, the way he knew there was a fence, and hoped over the fence with ease. He figured the fence might slow them down. He then took a hard left, and jumped into the nearest building with an opening. He shut the door rather loudly and moved through the darkness to try and hide somewhere. He took a breather for a moment.
"You okay?" He heard Wintergreen ask.
"Fine." Robin whispered. "The alarms went off but I'm out. Just let it clear up a bit, and I'll head back."
Robin listened to his surroundings. He didn't hear anything but some soft shuffling that could've been rats. This was an old building, it wouldn't surprise Robin. He peered over the boxes he was hiding behind, his eyes adjusted to the darkness, but didn't see anyone. Just when he was about to sigh a breath of relief, he felt a gun to his back. Robin froze.
"Walk. Forward." The gruff voice behind him said. Robin did as he was told and decided to try and let Wintergreen know what was happening in case he got too deep into trouble.
"Are you going to kill me?" Robin asked.
"Keep walking. The boss will decide what to do with you." The gruff voice answered.
"I'm going to transfer your coordinates to Slade. Hang on, Robin." Wintergreen whispered into the ear piece. Robin felt his heart clench from both fear and hope. Fear because this could be seen as a failed mission to Slade, who'd likely punish him for it. And hope because if he couldn't get out of this, he could at least count on Slade to come get him.
Robin was leaded at gun point into a dimly lit room. Before he even entered the room he identified who the man worked for. The maniac laughter echoed through the building. Painted starch white with green hair and a blood red smile on his face, Robin came face to face with the Joker. The Joker seemed to be holding a meeting but everyone turned their attention to him when he entered.
"Birdboy?" Joker asked laughing. "How nice of you to come visit me."
Robin looked around at the people in the room. Most were armed. Great, Robin thought. He waited for the perfect moment though. Robin's hand moved nonchalantly down to a bird-a-rang.
"We we're wondering who had come uninvited." The Joker giggled excitedly.
With a flick of Robin's wrist, a bird-a-rang went flying into the light bulb above and shattered it. He flipped around has fast as he could and knocked the gun from his hands. Robin didn't pause but immediately went into action. He begin fighting for his life to get out of this place. Fist where thrown in every direction as people scrambled to find him and take him down. Robin himself, struggled to fight in the dark. He could hear Joke shouting out harsh demands and guns being withdrawn.
In the mass frenzy, Robin couldn't find his way out. In fact things took a turn for the worst as Something hard slammed into the back of his head. He collapsed to the floor and didn't get back up.
