Aizawa got rushed straight into theatre the moment we got to the hospital. The doctors said how both his arms got smashed to splinters and his skull is fractured. Thankfully, there hasn't been any brain damage, but there could be some long term loss of his sight, but that's only a maybe.
I've been sitting by his bed ever since. He's been sleeping, his arms and face wrapped up in bandages, his eyes and underneath of his nose the only features visible, linked to a heart rate monitor. His scarf is on a table to the side. There's no other sound than the steady bleep bleep bleep of the monitor…
"Yo yo yo, it's Ku-ro-no!" A voice says from the doorway, trying its best to be hushed.
"Hey, Yamada." I stretch. It appears I fell asleep.
"I would've got here ages ago, but us Pros have only just finished up with the police and making sure all you guys got home safe. How's he doing?"
"I'm doing fine."
"Aizawa!" We both rush up to his bed.
"Stop fussing." His voice is muffled under the bandages.
"'Stop fussing' he says," Yamada mimics. "You had us real scared there, brother."
"You need to sleep," I add.
Aizawa groans.
"Oh come on! You always want to sleep, and now when it's actually important you don't!"
"Girl has a point, yo."
"I'll go to sleep when I know you'll stop worrying. It's illogical."
"Aizawa, my man, it's great to hear your voice, but if you don't get some rest, Midnight is in the next room with Thirteen."
"Don't you dare."
"I'll do it, yo."
"And wasting energy on conversations like this is also illogical," I add. "You need to rest."
Aizawa shuts his eyes. "Fine."
Yamada holds his fist up to me and I bump it with mine. "Teamwork. Boom," he mouths.
"Yamada, look after Kurono until I get back."
"You got it."
"And if either of you wreck the house, I'll kill you."
"Yes, Aizawa," we say in unison.
Yamada places a hand on my shoulder. "C'mon kiddo, visiting hours are almost over anyway."
I curl up on the sofa, reading a book about a girl who runs a secret society. We've been given tomorrow off, I guess the school is giving us time to recover. Yamada and I have agreed that we won't visit Aizawa in this time, as he needs to rest as much as he can.
Currently, Yamada is scavenging food out of the fridge. We got pizza on the way home, but he's still hungry. "Jeez, what do you guys eat here?!"
"We were meant to go shopping this evening."
He walks back into the living room empty handed, and starts looking at the books on the bookshelves. "He does love his cats, doesn't he."
"He's been getting that monthly magazine ever since it came out, four years ago. He donates a lot to cat rescue shelters too."
"Yo, that's really sweet!"
"I won't tell him you said that." Yamada turns on the T.V. and we sit in silence for a while, before we both get bored. "So what's happening with the Sports Festival now?"
"It's still taking place - I still want Aizawa to commentate with me too. I dunno if he will now though after today."
"Don't be stupid, if anything, today will encourage it. This glimpse of death will be like, 'yo, you should spend time and do more stuff with your friends'."
Yamada sits up. "Hey hey! I like your thinking, kiddo!" He then gets up and walks over to the T.V., looking at all the games we have. "Yo, you wanna play Mario?"
We spend the rest of the evening playing Mario Kart 8, a game we both know was chosen to keep the mood happy. I have a number of zombie games and first-person shooters, but they all feel a bit too dark after today.
The evening soon turns into the very early morning. My eyes are bloodshot and stinging, the only light being the brightness from the T.V. Eventually, our tiredness shows in our driving and we decide to pack it in and go to sleep - not something I really wanted to do as Yamada was winning the amount of races won.
"Imma just crash here on the sofa, kiddo, but imma take a shower first so I'll see you in the morning." He holds out a fist.
I bump his fist with mine. "It is morning."
"Oh yeah!" He stands up. "Well, either way, bedtime yo." He walks out of the room and I head to my bedroom. But I don't go to sleep. Instead, I drag out all of my bedding into the living room and make a den using the armchair that's adjacent to the sofa. Yamada takes a longass time in the shower, given that I'm done with five minutes to spare before I hear the sound of running water end. I love the sound of running water, it's calming. He then spends another longass time drying his hair.
"Yo, what's going on?" I can't see Yamada, but I can hear him through the duvet-walls of the den.
"Aizawa never lets me do this normally, but I always thought it would be really fun," I reply sleepily. And, in truth, I don't want to be alone. This isn't the first time I've been home without Aizawa before - I didn't go with him on every patrol - but it's the first when I know he's not coming back. Even if Yamada is in the house...I don't want to be alone.
"I won't tell if you won't."
"You probably think I'm a massive baby…"
"Not at all, yo! Den-building is a huge part of childhood! The fact you've never done it before is just sad. It's super fun!" He goes silent for a moment. "Hold on."
I don't think much of all the rustling about and start going to sleep. It's only until, a short while later, Yamada wakes me up with a proud "Taa-daa!" that I crawl out from my den to see what the bloody hell he was doing-
He's made a den.
He's made a good one too. Yamada's dragged the sofa to the side and used the space between the back of it, the wall, and the armchair where I am to make a den, a floor and walls made from duvets and pillows, and a roof out of bed sheets, everything weighed down and held in place by books.
"What d'you think?" I hear a slightly muffled voice from behind the duvet-wall.
"Colour me impressed, man! It's so cool!"
"There's a difference between being an adult and being a grown up, y'know. But come on, sleep now. I'll get in trouble if you're stupidly tired when Aizawa gets back."
I laugh. It's true, but also hypocritical as he's the one who literally sleeps in class. He doesn't take me out on patrols anymore actually, so I guess he does care about how much sleep I get.
I snuggle up into my den. This is good. Given everything that's happened today, this is a good ending. I needed this.
When I first started writing this, Yamada was originally just going to be a background character, but he very quickly got woven more into the story. I like his relationship with Kurono, where he's kind of the (irresponsible?) cool uncle/older brother/godfather that a parent always hates giving responsibility too because they'll probably end up burning the house down or accidentally robbing a bank or something like that. Although Aizawa treats Kurono more like an adult (that he used to), Yamada sees her as an equal pretty much, and only tells her to do things like 'go to bed' because he has to. I like their relationship :)
