CHAPTER 11
Sasuke stared at the apartment building in front of him. He sat comfortably in his car since he arrived there 10 minutes ago, weighing the pros and cons of going to Erza's house. There was a chance that she would slam the door on his face and tell him to get lost or beat him for going to her house, and no matter how much he thought about it there were only cons if he chose to proceed with his plan. So logically, he should just abandon his plan of visiting her but he couldn't because he was worried about her.
He didn't tell the others that he knew where she lived because he didn't want to face her wrath if she ever knew that he spilled it to them. Then again, he only knew her apartment building but he didn't know her house specifically. Although he thought that fact could easily be fixed if the guard was kind and gullible enough to believe his white lie.
At last, he made his decision and exited his car, locking it in the process. He walked towards the guard post and saw the middle aged man who was sitting inside while checking the live feed from the cctv.
Sasuke cleared his throat, garnering some attention from the man.
"Can I help you son?" He asked kindly.
"Yes. I'm sorry for bothering you," he said. "But can you tell me the number to Erza Scarlet's door? I'm her classmate and I'm supposed to drop off her homework. She didn't come to school today," he said earnestly with an innocent face, hoping that the guard would buy it.
"If you are her classmate, shouldn't she tell you herself her house number?" The guard asked in return with a raised eyebrow.
"She did text me about it earlier but I left my phone at school and I forgot her house number," he lied. "Can you help me this once Mr. Kobayashi," Sasuke pleaded as he peered at the name stamped on his uniform. "I need to go home soon and I really need to drop her homework as soon as possible.
But Mr. Kobayashi only looked at him suspiciously.
"Come on, I really am her classmate. You must have seen me yesterday dropping her off in front of the building. There, I'm driving the red car over there," he pointed out towards his parked car. "And I did stop for a while by the post for security check before you let me through," he reasoned. That one was the truth.
"Yeah I remember you from yesterday," Mr. Kobayashi said, nodding his head at him.
Sasuke let out a triumphant smile.
"So Miss Scarlet didn't go to school today huh," he inquired. "No wonder I didn't see her walking through the gate today. I thought I miss her walking by," he said.
"No. She had a fever," Sasuke supplied. "So, the door number?"
"45, on the eighth floor," Mr. Kobayashi gave in.
"Thank you Mr. Kobayashi," Sasuke earnestly said. He felt a little bad for lying to the kind man but his worry for Erza made him do stupid thing.
"Yeah yeah," he waved it off. "Off you go check on Miss Scarlet, send her my regards and I hope she will get better soon."
"I will," Sasuke nodded. "Have a nice day," he said before he walked back towards his car to pick up the rice porridge that he bought earlier on the way here. He was feeling a little nervous. He just hoped that Erza won't send something crashing towards his face again.
###############################*******###############################
Erza sneezed for the nth time that day and blew her runny nose on the tissue. "Ugh, I really hate this," she mumbled as she threw the used tissue expertly into the dustbin. She really hated it when she was sick, especially if she caught a cold. Everything felt wrong with her body. She got a head splitting headache and her nose was running. Not to mention, her taste bud had gone haywire and she couldn't even enjoy her strawberry cheesecake. It felt wrong to her.
She whimpered instantly thinking of her strawberry cheese cake. She ate the last slice of it during lunch and her fridge was empty. She was supposed to go and buy her strawberry cheesecake stock for today after school but she couldn't even get up from the bed this morning because of the cold. She never thought that it would be this bad. She seemed like she was doing better yesterday.
"Strawberry cheesecake," she whimpered like a child as the sweet creamy and fluffy piece of cake keep popping in her mind.
Suddenly, a loud ring was heard from her doorway, startling her thought process. She wondered who it could be. She knew that Itachi and the other person was in US at the moment and Shikamaru called in the morning to ask about her condition and he specifically told her that he wouldn't be able to come over today. So it puzzled her to hear someone ringing her doorbell.
Another loud ring was heard making her cringed as the loud sound made her head pounding.
"It must be the salesman again," she grumbled with a loud huff as she slowly got from her bed and walked towards the door.
The doorbell kept ringing, showing the impatience trait of the person. Really, she thought the salesman on the other side of the door was about to be killed by her bare hand.
She turned the doorknob and roughly opened the door with a killing glare on her face but once she saw the one outside, her face turned into shock and confusion. She would have never imagined to see his face outside of her door.
"Yo," he said nonchalantly with a peace sign casually waved at her.
Erza could feel her jaw hanging opened seeing him there with his bagpack casually tossed on his shoulder while he carried a large plastic bag in his hand.
"What the hell are you doing here?" She yelled.
"Visiting you of course, I heard you are sick," he stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Without warning, he stepped inside her house uninvited making her astonished with his bold action.
"Wait a second," she called out to him who was already making his way to the kitchen, acting like him coming over to her place was an everyday occasion. "Who told you to come in?" She shrieked in frustration in her scratchy voice, closing the door with a loud bang. She went over to the kitchen, hot in his trail. How dare he ignore her and acted like he owned the place.
"I brought some porridge for you," he stated showing the plastic bag he carried and placed it on the table.
"I didn't ask you to bring anything for me," she seethed, crossing her arms on her chest defiantly, but Sasuke was unfazed by it.
"No you don't," he surprisingly agreed. "But being the good classmate I am, I brought you some because knowing your affinity towards strawberry cheesecake, I thought that was all you were eating for today. And it's not even good for someone having a cold," he said sagely moving over to open her fridge before she could stop him.
"And I guess you just ate your last piece of cake for today seeing how empty your fridge is," he deduced expertly.
"Don't go and open my fridge without my permission," she protested slamming it shut and standing protectively in front of it. She saw his eyebrow raised at this but he didn't comment on anything.
"How do you even know my house number anyway?" She yelled at him angrily.
"Mr. Kobayashi told me," he said with a smug smile on his face.
"What did you do to the poor man? Threatening or blackmailing him or something?" She asked suspiciously. If it was Sasuke, either one was possible. He just loved to blackmail people and she was the perfect example although she was not sure if he applied it to other people or she was just a special one.
He rolled his eyes at her words. "Please, how can you think that of me?" He said with a fake hurt expression. "I asked nicely," he said with an innocent face. "Oh, he even sends his regards and he hope you will get better soon," he told her, remembering the messages from the guard.
Erza glowered at him while muttering loudly in frustration. "Ugh, I bet you just lied right to his face. Is there even a limit to your manipulation, you lying jerk. Even Mr. Kobayashi fell for your trick."
She was further more enraged when Sasuke ignored her and proceeded to look around her modest kitchen like he owned the place.
"Don't you ignore me!" She shrieked in frustration.
What a bad day, Erza thought miserably in her head. She was drained and the headache she felt wasn't helping her mood either. She let him do whatever he wanted as she really didn't have any energy to argue or physically stop him in her condition. With a sigh and a helpless look, she sat at the kitchen and watched Sasuke inspected every inch of her kitchen with curiosity genuinely plastered on his face. He even opened the drawer of her pantry making her want to strangle him, in which she would undoubtedly do if she had the energy for it.
Sasuke suddenly stopped his inspection and faced her with a light frown on his face, standing in front of her on the other side of the island. "Your pantry and fridge are empty," he stated.
"Thank you for stating that Mr. Obvious," she muttered sarcastically, folding her arms on her chest in a defensive gesture.
"Seriously Erza you're not eating properly," he scolded, making her flinch at the stern look on his face. She wondered what's gotten into him, suddenly scolding her like this. Why did he make it his business to meddle around with her well being? They were not even a close friend for crying out loud.
"It's not your concern," she muttered patiently, more like trying to keep her temper in check because getting mad only made her head hurt more.
###############################*******###############################
Sasuke mentally sigh at the miserable looking Erza in front of him. She lived alone so she didn't have anyone to take care of her. And it's true that it was not his concern but he couldn't help but worry about her, and he didn't know why he fussed so much about her. All he knew that he didn't like it when she was sick like this. Maybe it was because he considered her as a friend, so he wanted to take care of her.
"Yeah, I know it's not really my concern," he admitted dejectedly. "Let's not fight okay, you're obviously miserable since you don't even argue much with me," he said. He went to the rack and took a bowl and a spoon from it, bringing it back to the table and poured the porridge inside the bowl.
"Here, eat this while it's still warm," he said as a peace offering placing the porridge in front of her.
"I'm not hungry," Erza stubbornly said with a scowl. He could feel a slight animosity towards him in her eyes. He could understand that, he intruded her house, her privacy and acted like he owned the place. He even had the nerve to scold her about her lifestyle. He deserved the hostility, he just hoped it wouldn't last because he was doing this for her own good. He knew that at the end of the day, she would see reason.
"You are hungry, you just didn't have appetite for it," he said. "Come on, eat," he coaxed. He could smell the aroma coming from the porridge and he knew that she smell it too as she looked at the porridge with interest. A loud growl came from her stomach and she blushed in embarrassment, squirming uncomfortably in her seat.
Sasuke suppressed a laugh at her antic and grinned. "See, even your stomach is begging to be fed. You will feel better once you eat," he said, handing her the spoon. Her resolve crumbled as she leaned on the table and grabbed the spoon from his hand and took the first taste of the porridge.
"It's good," she said in a small voice as she took another spoonful of the porridge.
"I know. I wouldn't buy it for you if it doesn't taste good," he said with a smile. He felt proud at his accomplishment as he saw her eat the porridge with delight. He stared at her with a smile playing on his lips, feeling content just watching her ate the porridge.
"Aren't you eating?" She suddenly asked, looking up from her bowl. "It felt weird eating alone when you're the guest," she said with a frown.
Sasuke sweat a little as he was caught staring at her but he was glad that she didn't comment on it. "I guess I'll eat just a little," he said as he took another bowl from the rack.
###############################*******###############################
Erza sat on the sofa as she watched Sasuke moved around in her kitchen, a sight that she never ever would have imagined to happen in her house. But there he was, washing the dishes after their meal. He insisted that she took a rest at the living room and let him did the cleaning.
She took his advice and lied down on the sofa feeling slightly better than she was in the morning. The porridge did help after all, she mused to herself with a smile.
It was such a bizarre day.
Sasuke was unpredictable as ever. Coming over to her house and being his annoying self. Forcing her to eat.
She didn't know why he was making such a fuss about it. Furthermore, he didn't have to do this kind of thing for her. Bringing her food, scolding her for not eating properly, taking care of her when she was sick. It made her slightly angry because she didn't want to feel like she owed him something, but she couldn't lie to herself that having him here with her today didn't make her heart flutter in excitement. She was touched at his gesture and he made her feel warm inside, a feeling that she never experienced again since her parents died. She liked that feeling.
She felt loved.
Erza felt the smile grazing her lips at her own discovery. She felt silly all of a sudden. Who would have thought that the one who made her feel this way was one Uchiha Sasuke, the boy who constantly pissing her off with his action, the boy who was making her life crazy since the day she met him. But despite all that, she knew that he had good intention and a good heart just like his older brother.
###############################*******###############################
Sasuke washed his hand and dried it using the clean towel before he went to the living room only to found Erza fast asleep on the sofa. He gazed at her peaceful expression as she slept. An expression so different compared to when she was awake.
Sasuke let out a soft smile playing on his lip as he walked closer to her and crouched down next to her form.
"Erza," he whispered softly.
But she didn't even stir in her sleep.
He got up and gently scooped her up in his arm bridal style before he walked to one of the room in her apartment. The first room he went to turn out to be hers as he saw the bed situated at the end of it. He quickly but gently placed her on the bed so as to not wake her. He blanketed her form with the comforter to keep her warm and turn off the lamp beside her bed.
He sat at the end of the bed for a moment, watching her as she slept. "Why are you so stubborn and keep scowling all the time? You're more beautiful and approachable looking like this," he muttered quietly as he removed the hair sticking on her face.
Sasuke marveled at the way her soft hair felt between his fingers. His eyes trailed from her scarlet hair to her cherubic cheek. He wondered if it felt as smooth as it looked. But before he could entertain his train of thought, he halted his fingers that were inching closer to the target as his eyes widened in surprised.
Why am I being this way? This is wrong! He scolded himself. He shouldn't behave like that towards Erza. He felt like he was taking advantages of her when she was asleep like that. He felt slightly guilty because of that.
Sasuke shook his head to clear his head away. He was always acting on impulse around the red head. What was it about Erza Scarlet that always made him act irrational? That was so not him. Sasuke exhaled loudly as he got up from her bed and walked away from her before he did something that he would regret later on.
###############################*******###############################
When she woke from her sleep it was already night time. She was puzzled as to why she was sleeping comfortably in bed when the last memory she had was when she watched Sasuke washing the dishes from her seat in the living room. She must have fallen asleep then and must have carried her to bed afterwards. She wondered if he was still here but she doubted it when she noticed the time flashing on her alarm clock on the table. It was already night time.
She got up from bed and walked out of her bedroom towards the living room. It was dark so she switched on the light in the living room and kitchen. She went to her door to make sure that it was locked and inspected every inch of her apartment, her routine every night before she went to bed. It was drilled into her to make sure that every door and window in her house was locked before she retired for the night. It was a safe neighborhood but it wouldn't hurt to stay guard about it.
She walked to the kitchen for a glass of water and was shocked to see the grocery bag on her island. She walked closer to it and saw foods in it.
"What theā¦," she muttered as she took the various items in it out onto the table.
She turned to her fridge and saw the note attached to it.
I hope you get well soon. Please make sure that you eat properly. I have to go home for now. Bye
Sasuke
"Sasuke," she whispered softly. He was being too kind to her and she didn't know if she deserves the attention he was showering her with. Any other girl would die to be in her place right now. She wondered why he was being so good to her when she always treated him harshly. He made her feel bad about herself.
She opened her fridge and saw that it was stocked with food, unlike its previous state in the morning. Sasuke must have bought her all of this. Her eyes trailed to the middle tray and her eyes widened when she saw strawberry cheesecake sitting among the food he stored in there. She quickly took it out and placed it on the island. She took a slice and placed it on a plate, digging into the soft and sweet treat with a spoon before she brought it into her waiting mouth.
It was delicious.
She felt something wet on her cheek and her fingers trailed its path. She was shocked to realize that she was crying.
Why? Why am I crying? She thought frantically.
She knew the answer to the question but she didn't want to acknowledge it. Crying for her was a weakness. It was a useless thing to do. Nothing would be achieved by crying. Problem wouldn't be solved by crying.
But she couldn't help herself. The tears just fell without control.
What is this feeling? She thought as she clutched at her chest. She felt a mixture of emotion inside her. It was not a bad feeling but it was intense and unbearable. More importantly she felt happy and touched because of Sasuke. She spent years trying to build a cage around her heart but little by little the cage started to crumble because of him.
Even if both of them didn't realize it, Sasuke was slowly making his way inside her frozen heart.
