I slowly made the short drive to the little coffee shop on the corner, running slightly behind schedule. But I had to think of some questions to ask him when I got there.
By the time I walked through the doors, I had successfully thought of three questions.
"Hello, are you ex-agent, Jason Gideon?"
"That would be me. Who are you?"
"I'm Lilly, we've talked over the phone a few times about an interview."
"Ah, yes. Go get a drink and come sit down."
"Alright then, I'll be right back."
After ordering a coffee, I walked back to the older, balding, gray haired man. "So," I started, taking my seat across from him. "I'm going to be perfectly honest with you, I only have three questions that I've thought up and that is my warning that I'm winging this."
"That's quite alright. Now I'm going to warn you, you may need to repeat some things since my hearing isn't what it used to be." He let out a soft chuckle.
"Oh I also want to apologize for running a little late, but I had ten other interviews today and I still have two more, so I might rush a little."
"That's fine."
I smiled and took a sip of my hazelnut coffee, then asked, "what are you doing now, like for a job?"
"I watch birds and then draw and sell them when I have time off from my job of singing at a local bar."
"Sounds like fun, can you sing part of a song for me?"
"Only if you get permission from the owner."
"I will, but after I'm done questioning you. Kay, my next question is, do you keep in touch with any of your ex-co-workers."
"Sometimes I'll call Hotch and cheek in but I ask him not to tell the others."
"Why's that?"
"Well, I left abruptly and without warning."
"I don't mean to pry, but why?"
"The cases were getting to me more and more."
"That's got to be understandable, I mean that has to happen to all of you, right?"
"As in we all get nightmares and what not, yes, but sometimes the others try to hide the fact and end up making it worse for themselves."
"Like who?"
"I remember Morgan, Reid, and Hotch all tried to but they were all found out in the end."
"After leaving the BAU do you still get them?"
"Yes, it's one of those thing that just never go away."
I nodded than asked, "Do you keep an eye out for the team on the news or in the paper?"
"Yes, whenever I can."
"If you could, would you go back to working there?"
He thought for a moment before saying, "No, but I would change how I left."
"How would you have changed it?"
He drank from his mug and said, "I don't know. I wish that I had told someone, that I told Spencer, that he had been more forewarned." He looked saddened.
"It sounds like you two were close." I pointed out.
He nodded. "We were."
"Why haven't you talked with him since then?"
He put his head in his hands and sat without a sound. As I was about to say he didn't have to answer if he didn't want to, he said, "I was, am afraid that he is disappointed in me for leaving without his
knowledge."
"I don't think so, when I was talking with him, I asked him 'would you say you're the best profiler out there?' And he answered 'no, I'd say the best is Jason Gideon. And I'd put Aaron Hotchner, David Rossi, and Derek Morgan way up on the list before I'd put myself.'"
"Did he really? " I nodded.
"Alright I need to explain something, with all of my other interviews, at the end, I had every one do or answer something crazy. For example, Hotch profiled me and Garcia related everyone to someone famous. I have my most brilliant idea as to what you're doing... PRANK CALLS!" He made no move as to acknowledge what I had said.
I pulled out my phone, we were doing this even if he didn't want to. "Of you old team mates, I have Reid, Morgan, and Garcia's phone number and I know that you have Hotch's. So, who's first?"
Again, he did not answer. "Alright then, I'll go first. Umm," I hadn't thought that I would have to pick so it took me a few seconds to decide. "Morgan." I dialed his number and waited for him to pick up.
"Hello?"
I took in a deep ragged breath held it then let it out. As I did it again, he asked more questionably "Hello?... Who is this!" He demanded. I only continued with my fake serial killer breathing. After one final one, I hung up, laughing. That was until I looked at Gideon, who had yet to move. I reached over a tapped him on the shoulder. He let out a soft snort, he had fallen asleep. I gave him another tap and he stirred awake.
"Sorry about that, where were we?"
"Well, I just called Derek Morgan and hopefully creped him out. Now, it is your turn, Garcia, Hotch, or Reid?"
"I'll call Garcia, I guess." I punched in her number and handed him my phone.
"Amazingly smart person speaking, speak to me."
"I'm a pirate, and I want your booty."
"What the HELL?"
"Arrgg."
"So help me I will track and hack you down!"
"Sorry ma'am I think I have the wrong number." He hung up and it was clear that he was having a hard time, not laughing out loud, while I on the other hand was being stared at. I took a deep breath.
Finally, I was able to say, "Kay, my turn, and I'm going to talk with Hotch." I grabbed my phone back and he gave me the number.
He answered on the first ring, "Hotchner."
"Oops, I did it again, I played with your heart, got lost in the game. Oh, baby, baby. Oops, you think I'm in love, that I'm sent from above. I'm not that innocent." I sang then hung up. "Oh, I would have loved to see his face right now. And last but not least, Reid." I handed him my phone again.
"Reid here." He answered.
"Look, I am your father."
"No, you're not, my father is William Reid, and he would never call me." he stated as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"Fine then, I see you, now get back to work." he hung up and chuckled. "Just like Reid."
"Well, that concludes all of this." I motioned around us and stood up. "But, before I go, there is two more things I need to do. Here, come with me." We both went to the counter.
"Excuse me, can I talk to the owner?"
"That would be me, what can I do for you?" Asked a tall brunet man.
"My friend here, is an excellent singer, and I would love for him to sing for your cafe. Non-profit, of course."
"Sure, I see nothing wrong with that. What song?"
"Happiness, by The Fray."
"Cool beans."
"I'd love to stay and watch, but I have two more people to talk with, but I'll be staying for part of it. And, for the last thing, call him."
Gideon nodded. "I will, bye."
"Bye."
"Alright man, you're up."
Once up on stage, he started to sing.
"Happiness is just outside my window would it crash blowing 80-miles an hour? Or is happiness a little more like knocking on your door, and you just let it in? Happiness feels a lot like sorrow Let it be, you can't make it come or go But you are gone not for good but for now Gone for now feels a lot like gone for good..."
I waved and headed out the door, wishing I could have stayed.
