The house was silent enough for Klaus to fall asleep, his head on Caroline's lap and the little heartbeat by his ear a lullaby to him. The first time he's slept in eight centuries was with Caroline in his arms the first time. Since they found out about the pregnancy, he'd been awake and alert. It was draining him.
He prided himself on not sleeping and being prepared to run or attack at any moment, but that was when he felt nothing. He felt too much now. Worry, anxiety, fear, excitement, love. It was not only confusing but tiring. It didn't help that his bond to Caroline and their child had grown as suddenly as her stomach. They both felt each other constantly, even when alone.
He had his own emotions to deal with – something he was still new to – as well as Caroline's and even their son's at times. He felt things like hunger and happiness. They felt a small rise in their hearts when Klaus talked to her stomach or Caroline sang.
That was why he was out within minutes, eyelids dropping no matter how hard he tried to fight. Caroline playing with his hair soothingly didn't help either.
Caroline giggled when he began to snore quietly. The front door opened but she shushed them, ending Kol and Bonnie's conversation suddenly. Elijah almost fell over them when they stopped to look and Stefan slammed right in to the elder Original. Liz slowed down, peeking over Bonnie's head to see what was going on.
Once they all got over their shock, they began to smile at the same time. It was creepy. "Go away," she whispered, flinching when her mate grunted and shuffled on the sofa. His leg slipped off and knocked over the table but Elijah was there to grab the vase before it smashed.
"Caroline," Klaus murmured, making the woman in question blush as they all looked at her. "Go. Away," she repeated harsher but still quietly. Kol threw his arms up dramatically and strode away with a giggling Bonnie in tow. Stefan glared at Kol and followed them whilst Elijah offered to explain to Liz the vampire world and how New Orleans was different to everywhere else.
Caroline just smiled and looked down at Klaus, biting her lip to stop herself giggling at the sight. He just looked so peaceful that she couldn't stop looking. His mouth was open and his face relaxed. He looked younger and stress-less for the first time since she'd met him. She was truly in love with him.
Marcel watched over Genevieve's shoulder as she shook. There was an image in the mirror of Caroline and Klaus. He was waking up to see her smiling down at him. It was sickening for Genevieve but Marcel paused. That was the man he remembered, the one that saved him from his whipping and raised him.
Could he really get rid of a man that was only now looking out for his love and child?
Could he really kill his father? Kill a man that wanted only to keep his family safe?
Genevieve must have noticed his hesitance because she span around and had him pinned to the wall with her magic. "You do not question this. This monster is the one that left you for dead when Mikael came!"
"I don't think he did," Marcel admitted before he could stop himself. "He didn't come back because our home was surrounded by fire and Mikael had killed anyone that he found no matter what their species was. He thought I was dead. He didn't leave me."
"Don't be a fool, Marcel. He never cared for you."
"Yes, he did." After a pause, he added, "they all did."
Marcel ran after Rebekah as she laughed freely. They were playing in the courtyard just a week after they took him in and he'd never felt so at home. "Marcellus," Klaus called from the balcony with a grin. He was hiding something behind his back and Marcel felt joy surge through him. "What is it? What is it?" Marcel asked, jumping up and down. Rebekah giggled at him. Klaus jumped over the balcony, still hiding something behind his back.
When Marcel bounced over to him, Klaus caught him with his free arm and lifted him. "I have something for you," Klaus smirked as he carried Marcel away to the parlour. Rebekah trailed after them, a skip in her step. "What is it?" Marcel whined with a huge smile, making Klaus laugh loudly. "Oh, my boy. I hope you like it," Klaus said softly, setting Marcel on the chaise. "I will. I have never been given a gift before. You have given me everything. I will surely like it," Marcel said slowly, using the fancy language Elijah was teaching him.
"Well, here you are then," Klaus chuckled as he pulled his hand from behind his back. He had a large package and set it on Marcel's lap. He tore though the paper and his smile fell in awe. There were small toys for him and some paper with charcoal. "Do you like them?" Klaus asked a little worried. "I love them," Marcel breathed, looking up at Klaus and grinning. He put his new belongings beside him before hugging Klaus, little arms around his neck. "Thank you. You're my father, the one I never had."
Marcel didn't know that Klaus was in tears, but he saw Rebekah biting back a sob of happiness. "Rebekah, join us," Marcel laughed, opening up his arm for her. She knelt beside Klaus and held on to them both.
Marcel was tossed out of the window with a flick of Genevieve's hand. He was of no use to her now, but maybe he could be of use to someone, someone that once loved him like a son.
It was late in the evening but Klaus was still asleep. Everyone had been tiptoeing around the house to let him sleep. Caroline fell asleep for a while after but when she felt kicking she awoke. He stirred until he woke up, feeling the kick against his cheek. "Hey, sleepy head," she teased, rubbing the top of her stomach fondly. "He's such a mummy's boy, wanting you all to himself," Klaus smiled up at her, beginning to sit up .
She kissed his cheek lightly. "Of course he is. He's my baby boy."
"He's mine, too," Klaus pointed out. "Yeah, well, I'm his mommy. You can be his favourite when he's older." Klaus scoffed with a playful roll of his eyes. "Sure, I'll have him when he's no longer cute and squishy."
"Uh, you can have him when he's older, which means all the hard part's over."
"Yeah, yeah." She laughed at him, enjoying his happy moment. He paused for a second, just looking at her. "I love you." She would never get used to that. "I love you, too, Klaus."
Hesitantly, he asked, "Why don't you call me Nik? That's what my family call me."
"Because I fell in love with you when you were Klaus, not Nik. Nik was the human they grew up with and loved. You're still Nik to them, sometimes. Elijah calls you Niklaus because he knows you're both Nik, their brother, and Klaus, the Original vampire turned hybrid. I call you Klaus more because I love who you became. You've made mistakes and bad choices but you still fell for me and you've started to be better. You're not changing, you're just not making those bad choices anymore. Well, not as much as you used to."
His fingers brushed through her hair to her cheek and she leaned in to his touch. "Thank you."
"For what?" She hummed, as he ran his knuckles across the curve of her neck. "For loving me, for giving me a chance at happiness... for saving me from myself." He met her eyes and she saw the intensity of them. "Thank you," she breathed, "for loving me, or giving me my happiness, for being my everything... for saving me from myself."
He leaned, hand cupping her cheek, and pressed his lips to her own. It was softer than usual, something more special than anything else. Their eyes were closed, noses brushing together and foreheads rested against one another's.
Their moment was broken by a thud, followed by Bonnie's screaming at Kol. "We should get our own house," Klaus grumbled, earning a giggle from her. They pulled away as a knock echoed through the room. Somehow everyone came in to the room at once in their confusion at who would be knocking. Kol counted them all to himself before looking to Rebekah for help. She just shrugged at him.
Elijah rolled his eyes dramatically and strode over to the door, tossing it open and staring down at Marcel. "Before you kill me, I'm not working against you," Marcel rushed out, "Well, I was but now I'm not because... well, its a long story but-" A gunshot rang out and they watched Marcel crumple to the floor with a groan. "MOM!" Caroline shouted as Liz gave her gun to Rebekah. She and Kol were laughing as Liz walked away with a shrug. "Well, it didn't kill him, did it?" the human woman hummed as she walked up the stairs like a queen. Caroline slapped her palm against her forehead and muttered to herself about her mother putting herself in danger. "Put him in the dungeon, brother. We'll talk to him later," Klaus ordered to Elijah before picking up Caroline and flashing them away.
Kol took Bonnie's hand, giving her some strength as she chanted. Marcel's eyes rolled to the back of his head and he passed out. "SOMEONE BETTER GET THAT BLOOD OFF THE PORCH!" Caroline screamed from upstairs. "I'm out," all but Elijah called and the older brother just sighed. "Children. All of you are children." He picked up Marcel by the front of his shirt and carried him away to the cellar that Klaus had dubbed the 'dungeon'.
It would be a long day in the morning.
AN: I'm currently on holiday. Don't expect an update for a couple of weeks. I'm also working on my first Captain Swan (Once Upon A Time) fic but that might not be up for a couple months. I hope you like the chapter, even though its short and not really filled with much. It was more of a light-hearted chapter because I was in a good mood when I wrote it. Leave a review and look out for an update after 2 weeks. :)
