Summary: Luffy's found happiness with a strange, new family. Unwanted events continue to occur and the mystery around his parent's death begins to unravel. He wonders just how long this happiness will last.
"Makino died six years ago." Smoker says calmly, his fingers twitch with the need to smoke at least one cigarette in order to ease away from the stressful situation he had carelessly put himself in.
Sabo, Law, and Dolflamingo all share the same shocked expression. Sabo's mouth hangs open like a dead fish, Law blinks repeatedly, and Dolflamingo just stares.
"What the hell do you mean by 'she died six years ago'?!" Law shouts as he slams his hands on the table, the few items on the table rumble before settling back into place. "Doesn't that mean we have less of a lead on Luffy's kidnapper now!?"
"How'd she die?" Dolflamingo interrupts. "Did she have anything to do with Luffy in the first place?"
"She did, actually." Smoker laughs. "Their connected in such a weird way it's almost humorous how things have twisted around like this."
"Humorous?!" Sabo repeats, mouth still agape. He blinks repeatedly as if trying to process in the word in his head.
Law narrows his eyes at Smoker, choosing to ignore his choice of words. "What kind of connection did they have?
"Makino was Monkey D. Dragon's childhood friend." Dolflamingo eyes widen in remembrance.
"His childhood friend and his first girlfriend." The giant man acknowledges.
Smoker nods. "Yeah. But apparently, things didn't quite work out and Makino never sat well with that. I have old reports at the office of her stalking him and his wife for years until they finally put out restraining orders on her. I believe it would've been around the same time period Luffy was born in. She left a suicide note saying that 'It's unfair! I can't take it anymore!' or something like that, and then she killed herself. She snuck into their house and hung herself in the master bedroom. "
"That explains why they moved afterwards…" Dolflamingo supports. "…to a calm place out in the woods where they wouldn't be bothered anymore."
"Yeah," Smoker nods. "We found a bunch of things in her house too. Pictures of Dragon that had his wife cut out, pictures edited so that Makino was beside him instead, and pictures of Luffy who had only just been recently born. Apparently she had wanted to have a child of her own with Dragon and name him 'Souchiro' or 'Sou' for short; because she had written that on the back of each picture she took."
"That's sick."
"It was." A sigh.
"So she had an unhealthy obsession that led her to insanity, huh?" Law mumbles to himself. The thought of someone stalking Luffy and his family and taking pictures of them was sickening; especially when he imagined all of the things she could've done to him.
"What about the person who kidnapped Luffy?"
"Makino had an identical twin sister."
Dolflamingo's eyes widen.
"Monet."

Barefoot and exhausted, Luffy stumbles onto the street haphazardly. He falls and scrapes his knees, but right now it doesn't hurt. Perhaps it's adrenaline that's keeping the pain away, or maybe it's fear; either way, he has to keep moving. He jumps to his feet and ignores the burning sensation coming from his bare feet as they step on the black asphalt road.
A car comes around the corner, his eyes widen.
It swivels and skids to a stop just a couple of inches away from hitting him. He as that deer in the headlights look in his eyes as he drops to the ground again, too frozen in shock to move. A horribly familiar woman steps out of the car with a Cheshire cat grin on her face, "Found you~" She hums.
He cries out in fear and stumbles back, managing to kick her shin before she got any closer to him. She grabs her leg in pain, "God damn it! That fucking hurt!" She slams her heel into his ribcage hard enough to leave a bruise, and he lets out a grunt of pain. "I'm sick and tired of this!" She grabs him by his shirt collar and throws him in the car.
She gets in after locking him into the car seat, and then they take off back towards the same direction Luffy had run away from. "You're getting on my nerves, brat." She growls; her long nails press into the steering wheel harshly enough to leave dents. An idea comes to mind. "Do you have any idea why I kidnapped you in the first place?"
"Cuz you're crazy."
One of her nails break.
"I'm sorry. It's because you have 'mental problems'."
She bites her lip.
"You're just not right in the head."
Her eye twitches.
"You're just a little… NUTTY!" He giggles hysterically; sleep deprivation seems to have put him in a strange state of mind.
"SHUT YOUR TRAP!" She yells. "I kidnapped you because you're Monkey D. Dragon's son!"
Luffy's mouth clamps shut.

"Monet?" Law raises an eyebrow at the name. "So Monet has been using Makino's name?"
"Yes."
"What does Makino want with Luffy?" Sabo interrupts. He seems just as confused as everyone else, especially with the hordes of information that was still processing in his head. He had a major headache right now.
"Well, I think obsession runs in their family. Guess why?" Smoker grins.
"…Because Monet had an obsession with Luffy?"
"Nope."
Sabo claps his hands together in realization. "Because Monet was obsessed with Makino!"
"Bingo!"
"Monet… Was devastated when her sister killed herself over something she couldn't have, so she wanted to get revenge for her deceased sister." Law tries his best to stay calm, especially when Smoker keeps treating this as if it were some sort of game. "But why kidnap Luffy?"
"Wouldn't it have been normal to go after Dragon or his wife?" Sabo suggests.
"It would've…" Dolflamingo mutters. "But she couldn't."
"Why?"
"They moved, remember? She didn't know the address they moved to, but she did know that they had a child. So she waited patiently for him to show up…" Smoker states, "After Luffy's parents died, it was all over the news. At that point Monet probably realized that it was too late to get revenge on his parents, so instead she's using Luffy."
"Luffy said he was three years old when his parents died, so why are you telling us he was barely even one year old?"
"Because the incident that killed off his parents nearly killed him to. He had to stay in critical care for quite some time; he was on life support, because his lungs had inhaled some sort of unknown fumes and he had stopped breathing by himself." Smoker explains as he shifts through more files on the table, "He was two and half when he was taken off life support and three when he was finally discharged. He's still really young, so he probably ended up picking a random number and sticking to it."
"I was never told any of that!" Law exclaims angrily; the amount of worry on his face is so high that it's impossible to read.
"Of course you weren't. The Gol D. family never kept or made new records, so I doubt that they ever took him in for checkups or appointments, even if they were called in." Smoker explains. "The only medical files that he has are the ones from the time he spent at the hospital."
"…So why did Monet find him so fast…?" Sabo interrupts.
"It wasn't as if the family he was put into took good care of him." Law mutters; he taps his fingers on the table in an attempt to calm himself down. "They were given both him and the money his parents had saved for him; which they could've used to protect him from the person who murdered his parents… Instead they left him alone frequently, which gave Monet time to get close to him, right?"
"That is correct."
"That explains why she took up teaching under Makino's name, and became so obsessed with Luffy."
"Oh yeah, she's on drugs too, by the way." Smoker snaps his fingers in remembrance.
"While we're on a roll here, why don't I tell you about the man who killed Luffy's parents?" Everyone's looks at Smoker so fast that their necks nearly crack from moving at such an unnatural speed. "And how he has absolutely no connection to Luffy's family whatsoever?
"What… What's going to happen to my son?" Dolflamingo's eyes have gone dark; Law rolls his hands into tight fists.
"If it hasn't happened already, he'll be killed."
The room goes silent.

"Dragon?" Luffy asks, eyebrows creasing on confusion at the familiar but unfamiliar name that had easily rolled off of the green haired woman's lips.
"Oh? You don't even know the names of your own parents?" She throws her head back and laughs so hard that it brings tears to her eyes. "How sad! How pathetic! How pitiful! I feel so bad for you!"
Luffy's head drops.
"Dragon and Makino were soul mates! But then some bitch came along and married him behind her back!" The woman growls; running a red light and nearly crashing into another car in the process, the cheer in her eyes has long disappeared. "What a devious bitch, don't you think?"
"Aren't you Makino?"
"PSH. Are you an idiot?! I've been lying to you this whole time! I'm Monet! But the second 'me' always tries to pretend she's Makino; we'll never get revenge like that!"
"Second… You?" Luffy pauses… "You're schizophrenic?"
"Ah, smart kid, no wonder she liked you so much! You're everything she ever wanted, had she given birth to you, that is." She grins. "She calls you Sou-kun, doesn't she?" Luffy timidly nods. "Sou-kun was the name Makino wanted to use for her first son, but he was never born! Yet she keeps calling you Sou-kun? She's probably trying to force you to study and grow up as a proper little boy, haha… Dear god I'm so fucked up!"
"You're on drugs…"
"Can you tell?! I didn't have this whole skitzo thing before I started taking them, but it's only to help me with my revenge! Y'know, that man who helped kidnap you? He killed your parents! How ironic, right? Right? RIGHT? ISN'T IT JUST IRONICALLY HILARIOUS!?"
Luffy's eyes widen.
"So, like, it's not as if I can kill them to get my revenge. THOSE FUCKERS ARE ALREADY DEAD!" She cackles at the look of fear on Luffy's face. "The only one left is you! I'll kill you off and then I'm gonna go dig up Makino's grave and burry myself with whatever's left of her rotting corpse."
She pauses.
"You know, my sister suffered for a while. 'It hurts, why did he leave me to be with her?' She'd say. She cried and stopped eating and then killed herself, so, don't think I'm gonna give you a quick and painless death. I'm gonna nail all your tiny little fingers and toes to the wall and then very VERY carefully drag out all your insides! It'll be fun! Trust me."
Luffy lets out a silent scream as tears dribble out of his eyes and snot from his nose.
"You're one messy child, aren't you? Don't worry. We'll fix that right up."
Luffy has never been so terrified in his life.

Some character info for those with questions (There are no spoilers)
Sabo: He was adopted by Dolflamingo as a young child, which means he's technically Law's brother (But they did not grow up together). The two have had a distant relationship throughout high school, but they became better friends after he became Luffy's babysitter. He's been best friends with Ace since elementary school, and often spends time at his house. He trusted Ace more because they've known each other longer, and because they have been better friends.
Law: Law grew up in a violent family. His father constantly hit his mother and he often hid away in the process. His mother later divorced his father and married someone else, who already had a son. Dolflamingo, the son, later took up the role of Law's father (Though he's technically his brother.) Law's left alone when his brother leaves, and is eventually allowed to move out at only thirteen years of age. He's lived by himself with broken relationships until Luffy came along. Law's naturally antisocial; the only friends he talks to at school are Robin, Kidd, and Sabo. Currently 16 ½
Dolflamingo: He moved into Law's family when he was thirteen because his father married Law's mother, their relationship was awkward to start but over time it smoothed out and he became Law's father figure. Dolflamingo moves out at eighteen, goes to college, becomes a designer, and adopts a little boy named Sabo. He supports Law's want to move out and live alone out of guilt for leaving him alone, but their relationship kindles as they become reacquainted with each other. Currently 24
Ace: Ace grew up with a two faced family; they were involved with Luffy's family as friends and…. but as they died they used their money for their own benefits. Ace remained oblivious to this and the favoritism towards him until it was too late; he wants Luffy to return to being his brother. He has frustration towards Law for taking him away, and guilt for treating him wrongly. His mother is a retired model and his father is dying from an unknown illness. Currently 17
Luffy: Lost his parents when he was only one year old, remained in the hospital for two years, and moved into the Gol D. family when he was only three years old. He was constantly left alone or set up with babysitters while they went on vacations. He moved out and went to live with Law shortly after his fifth birthday. Etc. Etc. Currently seven years old
The story so far: At a younger age, Makino grew up and eventually dated Dragon. That love turned into an unhealthy obsession so he broke up with her and eventually married someone else. She stalked him and threatened him and his wife, even going as far as to take pictures and linger around their newborn (Luffy) until they filed a restraining order. She later broke into his house and killed herself in his master bedroom (hung). Monet wanted revenge for her sister, but dragon and his wife had already been killed, so she went after Luffy. (She's had an obsession with her older sister. The drugs she's on have made her… ill.) Etc. Etc. E…t.c..
