Caroline didn't know how to react. In her mind she had envision seeing Klaus so many different ways, but this was something she was not expecting. She bit down on her lower lip and stared at him.
He looked at her and she could see the confusion behind his eyes. After a moment she finally decided to speak, to try and clear the awkward tension between them. "Hello." Caroline felt the need to slap herself. Of all the things she had wanted to say, 'hello' was the least of them.
She glanced back up at his face and he gave her a small smirk. "How have you been?" He sweetly asked. Caroline never answered his question as she felt the ebony horse behind her push her shoulder. She honestly didn't know what to say, she faced the horse and moved away from Klaus.
"I see you took care of Kasimira. She still looks the same." Caroline cooed the horse. She heard Klaus' heavy footsteps come towards her. "Yes, she does… though I can't say the same for you." Caroline snapped her head back around to glare at the blonde man.
"If I may ask, what does that mean?" Caroline hissed. Klaus gave her a sly smile as he slowly made his way to the stall. She followed Klaus until he reached out and petted the horse on her head. "Nothing bad, I assure you." Caroline's eyes never left his face, but his never met hers.
"To answer your previous question, I have been well. Though I'm sure I can say the same for you. You do look more sophisticated since the last time we saw each other." Caroline sweetly spoke in a sarcastic tone. Klaus finally turned to her and gave a small laugh.
"Yes, I am quiet sophisticated now… as you politely say. I can see you still have the same sharp tongue. At least that hasn't changed." Caroline scoffed at his remark. "I see that you have a craving for red-heads. That's changed."
She didn't dare look at him, but she could feel his stare burning into her face. Caroline listened to him clear his throat and move away from the stall. "So it was you in Genevieve's room?" Klaus angrily questioned.
Caroline ran her hand over Kasimira's head one more time, before moving away from the stall. She didn't bother looking at Klaus as she walked to the open stable door. "Next time, perhaps you should use a lock? I hear they tend to come in some use for those type of situations."
Caroline stepped out of the door and didn't bother turning back, not caring if Klaus was behind her or not. This was not the homecoming she was expected, but when had anything in her life been normal for the past 5 years.
Caroline stormed up the stairs and past the room that had once been hers, now belonging to the woman known as Genevieve. 'I'll probably meet her soon. Of course… fate hates me.' Caroline felt like hitting something, or rather hitting someone… preferably with red-hair.
Before she rounded the corner she happened to glance down the hallway and then came to an abrupt stop. At the end of the hall she saw Elijah and the man who had doomed her life 5 years ago. Elijah noticed her right away, but Mikael had yet to see or hear her. Her eyes widened at Elijah whose look was telling her to run away but Caroline couldn't move.
Elijah adverted his eyes from Caroline and back to his father's. Caroline watched the ordeal take place as Mikael gave something to Elijah in a small box. Before she could lean forward to hear what the two were saying a hand was placed over her mouth.
Her muffled screams and pleads were muted by the large hand who quickly turned her around to look at the intruder. She stopped for a moment to realize that Klaus had somehow found her and prevented her from listening to the conversation.
"What are you doing?!" Caroline silently asked Klaus, but he placed his hand on her shoulder and looked around her. She paused for a moment as his hand lingered on her, but she quickly shook out of those unwanted thoughts.
Klaus brought his finger to his lips, indicating for her to keep quiet and he gently grabbed her hand and walked down the hallway. Caroline tried to see where Elijah and Mikael had disappeared to, but Klaus' gripped tightened as he pulled her towards a door.
He hurried through the door with her behind him and closed it. "Klaus… what is happening?" Caroline whispered. He looked at her with a soft smile, "Caroline sit down. We need to speak." Caroline's eyes glanced around the room until she found a small chair.
She sat down and looked at Klaus, waiting for him to explain. "Elijah and I sent for you to be returned home. Mikael does not know you are here." Caroline looked at him puzzled at why they would send for her. "But… I don't understand, Klaus. Why would you send for me?"
Klaus looked away for a moment before pacing the room back and forth. Caroline was beginning to get dizzy watching him, still confused at his words. Finally he stopped and came towards her. He lowered himself to her eye level. He was so close, Caroline almost forgot to breathe. 'Silly girl, stop it!'
"Caroline, Elijah and I have a plan. To get you out of this mess. Rebekah does not know of this yet, but we plan to tell her soon. We will not speak of this to Kol. Mikael leaves tonight for some… business north of here. He won't be back till the day before your birthday. Then he plans to send for you."
Caroline stared at him blankly for a few moments, trying to process everything he was telling her. "I don't understand… why do you want to help me?" Klaus sighed and ran his hand over his face. He quickly stood up, towering over her.
"Caroline, it was never our intention to let Mikael hurt you. Our father is mad, and he has told many lies to gain the power he has established for himself. Elijah and I have to stop him and we will." Caroline finally relaxed for a moment, allowing herself to let everything he was telling her to sink it.
She had always felt somehow she was a prisoner in all this confusion and madness. Somehow she knew that she could trust Klaus and Elijah. "Klaus, please… I need to know. Why? I just don't understand. This is so much, I just need answers… I also just returned." She mumbled.
Klaus gave her a look of pity and Caroline shook her head. "Klaus, I do not want or need your pity. I need to know what exactly is happening. Why do you want to help me?" Caroline's eyes bore into his as she saw him hesitate before answering her.
"Caroline, I can only tell you one thing. Please… confide in Elijah and myself. We shall make this work. All of our lives depend on it, including yours. Everything is about to change, Caroline. You will have your answers soon. I promise." Caroline couldn't say anything, but watched him walk hastily towards the door.
Klaus turned to her once more, "For now… stay here. I will return shortly after my father leaves. There is food and water on the table behind you." She watched him slipped through the door, leaving her in the darkened room. She could only make out things from the moon that drifted through the window.
Caroline realized that it had nearly been all day since she had anything to eat. She glanced at the table, but still couldn't find the strength to eat. She was thirsty, so she opted for the water in the goblet. The water burned her throat, but she quickly drank it and then felt somewhat better.
Caroline suddenly felt alone in the big room, and it was a chance to finally catch up with her thoughts. 'Elijah and Klaus want to protect me, but why? I have to find out what is so important about me.' Caroline was so consumed in her thoughts that she didn't even hear the door opening and someone stepping inside.
"Well, well… you must Miss Forbes? I presume?" Caroline turned to the bitter female voice and her heart raced as the red-head she had seen earlier came towards her. Caroline arched her back and put on a stern face. "My name is Caroline Forbes… and you must be Genevieve?" She shot back in an sharp tone.
Genevieve gave her a cold smile before holding out the knife behind her back. Caroline felt the chill run down her spine as she saw the silver blade. She jumped up in terror as Genevieve came towards her, pushing her back into the chair.
"Yes, I am. Don't even try to run Caroline. I'm a powerful witch and I can stop you. Very easily." Genevieve gave her a wicked smile. Caroline put on the bravest face she could, and watched as Genevieve twirled the knife in her hand.
"Please… what do you want?" She watched as the red-head laugh bitterly. "We both know what I want, Caroline. The question is what do I have to do in order to gain it?" Caroline sucked in a deep breath. She had, had enough of this pointless banter. "If you wish you kill me, get it over with. I'm in no mood for games."
Genevieve looked at Caroline in shock as she laughed again. "No dear, I'm not going to kill you. I still wish to help Klaus and to see this through as planned. I came to you because I need some of your blood. If you don't mind." Caroline felt the tension in her shoulders relax for a moment before her hand was snatched up quickly by the witch.
Caroline felt the tip of the knife being stuck in her hand, as she let out a small whimper. After Genevieve had placed her blood in a vial, she wrapped it tightly with a piece of cloth. "Elijah will be back and he will heal your hand."
"Genevieve, why do you need my blood?" Caroline held her hand to her chest, the pain was less than before but still painful. Genevieve stopped at the door and turned to look at Caroline. "Because I need to do a little spell. Klaus rewarded me greatly for my services and I tend to fulfill them." Genevieve gave her a condescending smile and left the room.
Caroline took in her words and felt the sudden rage of hitting something. She didn't know how much more of this she could take, but with Genevieve's words all she could feel was one thing. Heart-broken.
