So I'm back, hope you don't hate me. This was a challenging chapter to right, the last bet I just couldn't get the end bit right but now I think I gave my idea justice. And someone reached out to me asking to be my beta reader, so shout out to them. Thank you Pjatobeth, let's give her a round of applause. Now onto the chapter, hope you enjoy, race you to the bottom!
~Percy's PoV~
I ran after Nicole, hoping and praying to Apollo that Aria was okay. When I walked in I saw Aria panicking. Hanna was talking to her and holding her hand. Aria was looking right at her and calming down. I couldn't quite hear what was being said.
"Heart rate slowing down, administering one dose of Morphine." I saw a nurse stick a needle onto the IV tube and saw Aria slowly fall asleep.
Nicole and the other doctors talked for a moment before turning to the girls. "What were you talking about when the panic attack started? It seems like she was starting to remember things, but as with many amnesiac patients having memories return is a painful and shocking process."
I saw the three girls look at each other, as if trying to figure out what to say. Then Spencer spoke up. "We were talking about Ali, our friend who died. Aria was convinced she saw Ali when she was attacked, but we were trying to tell her it wasn't possible." Lie. I could see it in their eyes, and the relief after Spencer spoke.
"Well, in the future, don't tell her she is wrong. Try to talk around the topic. If you tell her her memories are incorrect she'll start reaching to the part of her that forgot and starts to panic, like what happened here. Okay?" They nodded and Nicole turned back to me. "Percy, call Sally and tell her what we talked about. You are going to be staying in the hospital tonight for observations. Tomorrow we'll talk about new medications. It's obvious that your old one isn't working." Nicole turned towards the door to leave the room, but quickly turned back towards me. "Oh, and make sure she knows you're not dying." With that she walked out and left me alone with Aria's friends.
"Do you know her?" said Emily. I didn't know what to say so I nodded.
"She's an old family friend, I had no idea she was working here." I smiled and sat down.
"What does she mean medication? Are you sick?" It was Hanna asking this time. I go with what she said I had, not knowing if it was believable or not.
"It's a sleeping disorder called narcolepsy. It means I have no control of when I go to sleep or not." They all looked at each other and nodded. I almost sighed in relief, but that wouldhave given me away. "I have to go call my mom and tell her I'm not dying. I'll be back." I got up and walked out. I made my way to a bathroom and locked myself in, making sure I was alone. Then I pulled out my cell phone and dialed my mom's number. She picked up right away.
"Percy, is that you?"
I smiled, glad to hear her voice. "Yeah it's me. Turns out they didn't kill me after all."
"Oh thank the gods! I've been so worried? Where are you, are you on your way home?"
Now here was the hard part. "Actually, no. Something happened and I'm staying in the hospital tonight. Now before you panic," I said quickly, hearing her about to freak out, "I'm not dying. There is something about the curse I didn't tell you though. Because I'm not at war at the moment, the whole 'passing out after a battle' thing kind of changed to the point where I don't really have control of when I sleep. I ran into Nicole Yew who is a doctor at the hospital and specializes in sleeping disorders and she said she wants to help me. She wants to see if we could treat this like another mortal problem." I took a deep breath after, saying everything fast so [my]mom couldn't get a word in. I listened, waiting for her to say something.
"How long has this been going on?"
I sighed, knowing she was upset. "It started a few days after Rachel became the Oracle." I winced, knowing how hurt she'd be.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You were so happy with Paul and writing your book. I didn't want to interfere with that. I'm sorry, Mom. I really am."
"Oh Percy, you're the most important thing in the world to me. I'm upset that you didn't tell us earlier. We could have helped you, made you better. Do you want me to come to the hospital?"
"No, I'll be fine. But I'll need a ride home tomorrow since my car is at home."
"Of course. I'll be there. Please call me later, or if you need me before then."
I laughed. "Again, Mom. I'm not dying. Everything is okay. I'll see you tomorrow. Love you."
"I love you too, Percy. Bye." I hung up and just stood there for a moment, thinking. I was contemplating making another phone call, but I couldn't decide if I should. I mean, we were friends, and she would have a some idea of what was going on, but she's always so busy. I looked at my phone and dialed the number.
"Hello?" said the female voice on the other end. For a second my voice was caught in my throat but I spoke.
"Hello Annabeth."
~Hanna's PoV~
Right after Percy walked out I turned to Emily and Spencer. "That was weird."
"Yeah, a little too weird. What are the odds that he knows Aria's nurse? The whole 'old friends' thing just isn't working for me. There has to be something more to this."
"Why does there have to be something more? It isn't that big of a deal, is it?" So what someone with a sleeping disorder is old friends with a doctor who specializes in sleeping disorders? It doesn't have to mean anything.
"Yes, but whenever someone new knows someone here it normally means 'A' is involved." Spencer seemed so sure, I really didn't think she was right though.
"Are you sure? It makes complete sense if he has a sleeping disorder to know a specialist. Spencer I think you're getting paranoid."
"Well I think I have a right to be paranoid. We should follow him, see what he says."
Now Emily rolled her eyes. "Spencer, I'm not following him to talk to his mom. What is he going to say? 'I love you mom, oh and by the way I've been helping stalk these four teenage girls for a while. Just wanted to let you know.' Let it go Spence."
I nodded but Spencer frowned. "I'm going with or without you." She paused, waiting for us to get up, but neither of us did. "Fine, I'll be back." With that, she walked out of the room, on a mission to listen in on Percy's phone call.
~Spencer's PoV~
I ran down the hall, looking for the head of messy black hair that belonged to Percy. I caught a glimpse of him turning the corner. I sped up, trying to catch him. I looked around, looking for where he went. He wasn't anywhere. I walked up to the nearest door and listened through, but didn't hear anything. I moved to the next door and the door after that. Five doors down I heard Percy's voice.
"Again, Mom. I'm not dying. Everything is okay. I'll see you tomorrow. Love you."
Bingo, there he is. It sounded like he was just hanging up. Shoot. I stood with my ear to the door a little longer, waiting to see if he would do anything else. There was a pause and then the dial tone. I waited a second and then he spoke. "Hello Annabeth."
Woah, another chick. Who the hell was Annabeth, and why was he calling her?
"I talked to Nicole today. We had an interesting conversation. Thanks for helping me out, but I don't want you talking about me to anyone. It's bad enough I have this stupid curse, you don't have to tell everyone. I already have a huge target over my head, no need to give everyone a challenge."
He's cursed? What the hell? A target over his head? And somebody wants him dead? It's probably "A".
"The war is over and so are we, I don't want you in my life anymore. Annabeth, you dumped me for a pile of bricks, did you expect me to be happy?"
So she's an ex-girlfriend? He didn't sound pleased over the split.
"I don't care about your reasons. You and the whole camp need to learn that I'm human. You can't just expect me to forgive you for almost killing me or breaking my heart. Next time you're down there send the message that I'm not coming back. Next time there is a huge war you can fend for yourselves."
Okay, wow. So attempted murder and heartbreak along with a war. I'm lost. I don't know what'seven going on in this guy's head.
"I don't care Annabeth. I'm done being a hero. Everyone is just going to sacrifice me without another thought. Goodbye." I heard him hang up the phone, but I was so confused I didn't move right away. I didn't realize what was going on until the door swung open and Percy Jackson was looking right at me.
