Okay, so this is it. Final chapter, of the first book at least. I thought a good time to put the final chapter out would be memorial day. Thank you to all the brave men and women who fought and died for this great nation. Memorial day isn't about thanking some random soldier you see on the streets, it's about remembering those who died in service to this country. Thank you all for making the ultimate sacrifice so that I could be here to make this statement. Anyways, back to the story, there will be others but I think I'm going to continue finish a little bit more of my Son Of The Huntress series first. After all, it was born first. But anyways, thanks to all of you who have stuck it through to the end, I love you guys. God bless every last one of you, Christian or not. I don't got a whole lot to do so it really makes my day when I come home and see that I have a review or something. Anyways, I don't own Sister's Grimm, and ladies and gentleman, I proudly present to you the final chapter of The Sisters Grimm: The Guardians I: The war is not over.
Chapter 11: Things cool down (Yeah right)
Liam
"Last I heard, we're fixing to go back out to the front." Mathews said
"The front?" Harris asked, fear in his voice
"Yeah, around the center of the town." Liam said
He had been medically cleared to return to his squad that morning. He hadn't seen much of Puck since they returned, but Mathews had told him what they had found. So Liam figured Puck wouldn't be back for a bit. Not that Puck would be part of the meeting, but he was probably with the engineers trying to decipher the codes on some of the sheets.
"Well anyways," Rogue said "I for one kind of miss the front, after nine months out there it's boring as hell here man."
"Amen to that." Liam said
Liam looked down at the small, silver cross in his hand. It was attached to a piece of string. Liam's father had given it to him so long ago. About five hundred years ago, in fact. Liam remembered the day well. His father was dying from some disease, Liam couldn't remember which one since everyone seemed to die of something back then. Liam remembered what he had said.
"This was my father's, and his father before him," He had said "And his father's, and his father's, and his father's, and his father's and his father who made it by hand."
Liam ran his hand over the smooth metal. Liam had kept it as safe as he could for five hundred years. He wished he had a son to give it to, but he hadn't really had time to meet a nice girl and settle down. What with the war and all. Liam wasn't sure what he would do when the war was over. For as long as Liam could remember, he had known nothing but fighting alongside his brothers. He wasn't quite sure how, but Liam was sure that the war was drawing to a close.
"Hey, Liam," Rogue's voice cut into his thoughts "You alive over there?"
"Yeah," Liam said "Just thinking."
"I don't think much anymore." Miller said
"Did you ever think?" Jax asked
They laughed. Liam was reminded of better times. He remembered when he was in training. They used to joke about fighting the Scarlet Hand, not at all aware of how bad the war would actually be.
"You know," Black said "There used to be this lady that ran the inn down the road from us, and this kind of reminds me of what she said to me the day I left for training."
"What?" Liam asked "Don't touch me?"
They all laughed again. Black clutched his stomach and leaned back, Conners fell off of his cot, Rogue and Mathews were leaning on eachother.
"No, for the record she was just all over me," Black said "But she used to be a prostitute I think."
"Why do you think that?" Conners asked
"Because the day I left, I was a little bit scared," Black said "And I think she knew it, she takes me to the back room of the inn-"
"Oh God." Liam said
"Let me finish," Black said "She takes me to the back room, and gives me a kiss, and she starts getting frisky. And just when I thought she was about to go all out, she stops and tells me "Now you remember this, and you get the rest if you make it back alive."
"How did this remind you of that?" Jax asked
"We were talking about remembering and thinking and stuff." Black said
Liam rolled his eyes. He continued cleaning his gun. If they really were going back, he needed to be ready.
Puck
"How are you feeling?" Puck asked
"Fine," Sabrina said, continuing to walk "I've been better, but I feel fine."
"Well it's a step." Puck said
They were up in the library in the Grimm house. Sabrina was looking for some journal, Puck didn't know which one. He didn't really care which one. Puck wasn't much of a reader, never able to get into it. But Sabrina was hellbent on finding whatever it was she was looking for. Puck looked at the spines of the books as he passed but nothing really caught his eye, just spell books and such.
"Where is it?" Sabrina muttered to herself
"On a shelf?" Puck offered
Sabrina glared at him and kept searching. She dug through piles and piles and piles of books that were strewn all over the library. Puck guessed that any librarian would have a heart attack coming into this room, there was zero organization whatsoever. Obviously the Grimms hadn't heard of the dewey decimal system. Puck took a quick glance around, thinking he might find something interesting. His eyes stumbled across a small, black book at the bottom of a pile. The diary of Basil Grimm.
"I think I found something." Puck said, reaching down for it
He pulled it from the pile and blew some dust off of it. It was an old leather bound book, he flipped the book open and stared at the curved handwriting. Exactly how Sabrina wrote. As Puck was looking at the writing when a word caught his eye. Guardians.
"What is it?" Sabrina asked as Puck began reading
The Guardians have contacted me today. They say that most of the South American jungle is under control, and the Scarlet Hand is withdrawing. But The Caribbean islands have been on fire in certain places for weeks, the humans think it's just a series of tornados. I hate to admit that this is a war that we may not win. I still haven't told Relda about the Guardians, or the Scarlet Hand. With luck, the Guardians will hold them from Ferryport Landing, and she will never have to deal with them. I haven't decided if I'm going to tell Henry and Jake yet either, they may not need to deal with them either. But if this doesn't get taken care of soon, then the Guardians may soon have to join us here in Ferryport Landing for a final stand. Sergeant O'Riley says that the Marines task force nine is almost out of supplies and will soon be overrun. I've been in contact with a supply unit near them and called for reinforcements. I hate that O'Riley is surrounded they way they are, he already lost his brother and was forced to assume command of the squad. He says a new recruit came in to replace him with the last reinforcement bank, and he's already been killed. We're running out of options, we may soon have to surrender completely. With no idea who the master is, and they seem to know every single move before we even make it. I'll have to talk to Mirror later and see if he can't lend me some magic supplies or at least a way to send them fresh supplies.
-Basil Grimm
July 17, 1985
Puck handed the journal to Sabrina and waited patiently while she read it. When she finished, she closed the book and handed it back. She had a shocked look on her face.
"Grandpa Basil knew about the Guardians?" Sabrina asked
"It looks like it." Puck said
"How come Granny never knew?" Sabrina asked
"Maybe she never read it." Puck said
"But she was his wife," Sabrina said "And she didn't read his journal?"
"I have no idea," Puck said "But this really seems like something we should take to Relda."
"Yeah," Sabrina agreed "At least let her see it."
They left the library quickly. Sabrina led Puck to the kitchen where Relda and Veronica were cooking dinner. Henry and Jake were sitting at the table.
"Granny, we think you should see this." Sabrina said
Relda turned around and wiped her hands on her apron. She sat down at the table and gave Sabrina a puzzled look when she put the book down in front of her. She squinted a little bit trying to read the cover. When she made out the name on the front, she got a sad look on her face.
"Basil's journal," She said "I haven't seen this since his funeral, I didn't have the heart to read it."
"We found something about the Guardians." Puck said
Puck flipped the book open to the page that he had read, and Relda began reading. She took a few minutes, but when she finished, she put the book down.
"Basil knew," She said "Basil knew about the Guardians."
"Of course he knew," Henry said "Do you remember when he used to spend hours locked in the library with that old radio?"
"He must've been communicating with the Guardians." Sabrina said
"He had to have been." Puck said
Relda still sat, silently staring at the book. She had a sad look in her eyes, as though she was looking at the saddest thing she had ever seen. Puck supposed, in a way, it was.
Pvt first class, Nico Maness: Guardians, Marine assault team Delta, tank gunner
"Anything?" Nico asked
"No," Cole answered
"Not a thing." Bronze called from up top
Cole was resting beside Nico in the tank, playing cards with him. They were on guard duty for the next two hours, the five of them. Nico, Cole, Bronze, Elias, and Captain Morgan. Nico, Cole, and Morgan were inside the tank. Bronze was manning the machine gun on top, and Elias was on the front of the tank with a rifle, keeping an eye out. They were positioned on a corner on the outskirts of the town. They were slightly elevated, with a forest behind them. It was the perfect spot for a sentry.
"This sucks," Nico said "I hate guard duty."
"Don't we all." Morgan muttered
Cole laughed. Cole was still a little banged up from the battle a few days ago, he had taken a piece of brick to the head when a building had exploded near the tank. Nico looked up to Cole, he had stood out in the open right in front of all the gunfire, and cracked jokes to keep everybody's spirits up while he did his job. Cole was the glue in the tank, Morgan was the backbone, Nico was the brains, Bronze was the brawn, and Elias was the eyes. Very few things ever got past him, so Nico could at least rest easy while Elias was on guard.
"That's game, four against a two." Nico said, laying a card down
"Nope, I can still draw," Cole said, drawing a card "Five, I believe the game goes to me."
Nico rolled his eyes and handed four cigarettes to Cole. Nico figured he'd win them back later somehow. They didn't have money or much else to put on the line, so they usually bet with clips of ammo or cigarettes. Nico remembered when they had hit a Scarlet Hand patrol inside a liquor store, and had actually bet full bottles of alcohol. And then even split it up amongst the squads when they got back. It was boring in a tank, not a lot of action. Nico remembered a few years back when they had been so bored that they actually played russian roulette. Thank God that Bronze was the brawn of the tank, because he forgot to put a bullet in the gun.
"How many packs of those do we have left?" Bronze asked
"Seven." Cole said, checking under the seat where they stored their cigarettes
"Throw me one." Bronze said
Cole took a pack out and tossed it up to him. Morgan shook his head and rolled his eyes.
"Six," He said "At the rate you smoke those things, it'll be lung cancer that kills you not the Scarlet Hand."
"I hope lung cancer can shoot well," Bronze said "Because the Scarlet Hand just can't kill me."
"Been trying for three hundred years," Elias said "We been together since, what 1744?"
"Yeah, something like that." Morgan said
"Hey, captain." Bronze called
"Yeah?" Morgan answered
"What was that you said the other day?" Bronze asked "About God having soldiers?"
"I said I'm a soldier of God," Morgan said "And I fight two wars."
"Which one you think will end first?" Bronze asked
"I don't know," Morgan asked "How many wars are you boys fighting?"
"Two." Cole said
"Two." Nico said
"Two." Bronze said
"Three." Elias said
"Three?" Morgan asked
"Yeah, this one, the spiritual one, and then I also have a wife." Elias said
The rest of the tank roared with laughter. Bronze was slumped over on the machine gun shaking.
"Oh man," He said "I think you're gonna lose one of those."
Elias laughed and Nico pulled himself out of the manhole and up onto the top of the tank.
"I gotta stretch my legs," He said "Been cramped in there way too long."
"Here, you can man the gun, I gotta get off my feet anyways." Bronze said
As he started to move, Nico caught movement in the treeline behind him. Just as he was about to shout a warning, a long, green, snakey head lashed out. Nico heard the sickening sound of flesh being ripped as the thing hit Bronze and then retreated fast. Bronze fell backwards through the manhole and Morgan caught him and pulled him the rest of the way in.
"What the fuck was that?" Elias shouted, jumping to his feet
"Came from behind!" Morgan called coming back up
He had two rifles in his hand and he tossed one to Nico. Cole was inside grabbing the rocket launcher. Nico took the rifle as Morgan pulled himself out. He was only out to his torso, but he could see. Nico and Elias were in the open, the most exposed.
"Scarlet Hand troops?" Elias asked
"Hell no, you see these bites?" Cole said
"There!" Nico yelled
The thing had come back to the treeline and Morgan pulled himself the rest of the way out. They fired at the treeline and the thing flew into the air, tearing trees as it went. It was the size of a dragon, with small wings. A jabberwocky.
"JABBERWOCKY!" Elias yelled
The opened fire again at the beast. It screeched and screamed as the bullets struck it, but they only seemed to annoy him. They hardly did any damage to him at all. Nico gritted his teeth and kept firing.
"IN THE TANK!" Morgan yelled
Elias moved up and lowered himself down into the tank, Nico followed. He turned just as Morgan was lowering himself in. The jabberwocky struck at him. Morgan yelled out and dropped like a rock into the tank, and Nico pulled the door shut.
"CAPTAIN!" Cole shouted
Morgan was dead, already. The thing had shredded his torso, and left blood and torn bits of his uniform everywhere. Bronze was still breathing, but his breathing was ragged and strained. He coughed as Cole put pressure down on his wounds.
"Come on," He said "Don't die on me."
"Swivel that gun." Elias said
Nico hopped into the seat and moved the tank's cannon around. The jabberwocky was sitting still, watching the tank. Nico pulled a heavy round from below his gunner's seat and pushed it into the cannon. Cole was still working with Bronze, and Elias was now on the scope.
"On the way!" Elias yelled "Fire!"
Nico pulled the trigger and fired. He scored a hit on the jabberwocky.
"I got him!" Nico called
"He's gettin up!" Elias yelled
Nico looked back through his scope and saw that Elias was right. He had only succeeded in making the jabberwocky angry. It shrieked and withdrew quickly.
"Oh great!" Elias said "You pissed it off."
"Fuck!" Nico screamed in frustration
"Bug out!" Cole yelled
"Bronze is our driver!" Elias said back
"You telling me you don't know how to drive a fucking tank?" Cole demanded
Elias said nothing and slid into the driver seat. Nico dropped down next to Cole just as the tank jerked. Elias sped down the hill with the jabberwocky flying above them. Bronze was still alive, but he was fading. Nico didn't think he would make it. Cole pressed the cloth down on him. He was bleeding out fast, Nico tried to help but he couldn't do much.
"Come on bro, don't die on me." Cole said
"I can't, I-," Bronze coughed "Man, I-."
"Don't talk dude." Nico said
Bronze's breathing grew even more ragged and he coughed hard, spitting up blood. Suddenly, he went slack and stopped moving.
"BRONZE!" Cole yelled "SHIT! BRONZE!"
"He's dead." Nico said quietly
"No!" Cole yelled, slamming his head onto Bronze's chest
Nico could hear the pain in Cole's voice. Nico was had been here the least amount of time, but all five of them had been together for three hundred years. Morgan had kept them together, and now Morgan and Bronze were both dead. Nico could feel rage growing inside him, that jabberwocky would pay dearly for what it had cost them.
O'Riley
"So that jabberwocky is back then?" Puck asked, moving with his rifle raised
"Yeah, that's what they said." O'Riley confirmed
They had been moved back to the front, and they were out on patrol. Just before they had left, a tank had rolled in with two dead crew members, including the commanding officer. They had promoted one of the soldiers to the commanding officer of the tank and promised them two replacements the next day. But O'Riley knew the pain of losing squad mates, they couldn't be replaced. Sure, they would form the same bonds of brotherhood as they had with the last ones, and they would fight and die for eachother. But they would never be the same, just like Harris would never be Jeffreys.
"Eyes open." Liam warned
"No I was just taking a nap." Conners muttered
O'Riley gave a small smile. He raised his rifle and moved in front of Puck, taking point. Puck turned quickly and scanned inside a bombed out building. He turned away and continued moving. O'Riley turned the corner and Conners slid in front of him.
"Well, since that jabberwocky is back," Puck said "We need to keep an eye out, no idea how many more there could be."
"Yeah, that's what I'm here for," Miller said "To look for dragons."
They laughed and then O'Riley straightened up.
"Alright ladies," He said "We're clear on our block, so sit down and rest up."
O'Riley slumped down against a wall. Puck, Harris, Liam, and Jax joined him. Jax passed around a pack of cigarettes, and once everybody had one, he passed around a lighter. O'Riley blew smoke out and laid his head back.
"So Harris," Liam said "How you liking Ferryport Landing?"
"It's different from Australlia." He said
"Ain't that the truth." Jax said
"Hey could be worse." Puck said
"Oh yeah?" Liam asked "How so?"
"Well, we could be doing-" He started
He never finished, because at that moment, a bullet whizzed through the air and smacked the wall next to his head.
"Shit, cover!" Jax yelled
They all jumped behind rubble as bullets began flying. O'Riley peeked over the edge and fired off a few quick rounds. Puck was reloading, and Liam threw a grenade over his head.
"What the hell are we even shooting at?" Harris yelled
"I don't know, I can't see them!" Puck yelled back
"Pull back!" Conners yelled
The rest of the squad fell back with O'Riley and they laid down even further. O'Riley pushed in another clip and leaned back over, continuing to fire. Jax popped a frag and threw it. O'Riley saw Puck lean back over the pile of rocks and fire a quick burst. Conners was laying down every bullet he had, but he was too far up front, he'd get killed.
"Conners, move your ass back!" O'Riley ordered
"Cover me!" He yelled, starting to rise
"You heard the man!" Puck shouted "Cover him!"
Harris was ducked down, shaking. His gun was lying abandoned beside him. Anger filled O'Riley in an instant, cowardice wasn't accepted. Not in his unit. He knew it took a bit to adjust to the fighting, but guys like Puck, Liam, and Conners were all living proof that you could pull courage from nowhere. Puck hadn't once thrown his rifle on the ground and curled up in a ball. In fact, Puck had been stupid and stood up and started shooting. O'Riley had pulled him back down into cover, and Puck had positively become a killing machine. O'Riley reached over and grabbed Harris.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" He demanded "YOU HAVE A DAMN GUN FOR A REASON! KILL SOMETHING!"
Harris nodded and picked up his gun. O'Riley kept an eye on Harris, watching him blind fire over the wall. Conners came down beside O'Riley. O'Riley fired another six rounds, not sure if he was hitting anything.
"I can't see anything!" Puck yelled
"Something is out there!" Jax yelled "That's where the bullets are coming from!"
O'Riley realized that, since they couldn't even see their enemy, they would be forced to fall back. There could be fifty of them, he couldn't tell.
"Get up!" O'Riley yelled "Move!"
They all got up and started to run, and O'Riley registered several things at once. Puck was still crouched, covering their retreat. A small, rounded object was flying through the air, straight at Puck.
"GRENADE!" O'Riley yelled
Puck saw it and started to move. It hit down below him and exploded, sending rocks flying everywhere. O'Riley heard Puck's scream of pain as he was caught in the explosion. It launched him a few feet and slammed him down onto the rubble.
"PUCK!" Liam yelled
He yanked out his radio and clicked a few buttons.
"WE HAVE A MAN DOWN! I REPEAT WE HAVE A MAN DOWN!" Liam screamed into the radio "WE ARE UNDER FIRE! WE NEED A MEDIC!"
HAHAHAHA! Ya'll thought I forgot about the jabberwocky didn't ya? I really am such an asshole aren't I? Nah, but this isn't the end. There will be more, now before I go I want to give a few quick shoutouts. For reviewing on the story, I'd like to thank: Guest, Wow, Randomauthor, PUCKABRINALOVER, CaleoRipple, OakeX, SkyePenderwick, anniecarter, Blah, and JustInYourWildestDreams. And for favorites: CaleoRipple and ezrumiju. And for follows I would like to thank: JustInYoutWildestDreams, OakeX, and Zae Marks. Guys, thank you all of you. Especially OakeX and anniecarter, who continuously reviewed and told me what they thought, how I could've fixed what was wrong with it, and what they'd like to see in future chapters. So this is the last chapter, but there will be a second book. I just want to figure out exactly what direction that I want to take this in, and I'd like to finish a little bit more of my Son Of The Huntress series. But anyways, until next time guys. God bless ya'll, love every last one of you guys.
