BPOV

I was dreaming. It was the only answer I had.

Edward was here?

How could he be here?

And I was kissing him.

Oh shit!

I pulled away from him and looked up into his eyes. He was smiling down at me.

"Edward what…?" I was going to ask a million questions but he cut me off.

"We can talk later, Bella. Right now we don't have much time. We need to go." He took my free hand in his and began tugging me out of the alley. On our way we found some zombies but Edward took them down with his gun. When we made it onto the street I spotted what looked like a big fire, but I couldn't see any more because Edward yanked my hand and we started to run in the opposite direction.

I noticed we were running towards my car, and the craziest thing was I heard the engine rumble. What the fuck? I must have been thinking out loud as Edward was quick to answer me.

"Don't worry, its only Emmett," he said grinning at me. He opened the car door and pulled the front seat forward, to allow me to slide into the back. I was half seated when a big, handsome guy with blue eyes, curly hair and dimples, offered his hand to me. I took it to shake as he grinned at me.

"Hi. I'm Emmett McCarty. Are you ready to go home?"

I nodded enthusiastically at him. "Yes please!" Emmett let my hand go but then I was startled by the car door being slammed shut with more force than necessary. I turned to see Edward glaring at Emmett.

"Save the pleasantries for later. We have corpses coming our way."

Emmett nodded and stepped on the gas. The next moment I was thrown back in my seat and we were flying down the streets. I wanted to grill Edward but it wasn't the right time. I was also incredibly worried about my father, and just as I opened my mouth to ask about Charlie, Emmett stopped suddenly, sending Edward and myself tumbling out of our seats.

"What the fuck, Emmett?" Edward asked him angrily.

And then we heard it.

Screams for help.

We turned our heads towards the direction of the screams. Two blond girls were running towards us, a dog following behind them. One looked to be no older than fifteen, while the other cradled a baby in her arms. Edward and Emmett got out of the car and ran towards them. At the same time, I noticed zombies were coming out of nowhere and closing in on them all. I grabbed my bat and jumped out of the car. Emmett and Edward met the girls halfway. Emmett took the baby while Edward grabbed the dog and they all began running towards the car when I noticed three zombies shuffling in their direction. I was going to go after them but Edward spotted them easily. He gave the dog to the older girl, and took his gun from his belt. With a look of determination on his face he shot them each in the head. When they reached the car the girls climbed in first with the dog. I put my bat on the car floor and Edward passed the baby to me before I carefully climbed inside. Emmett was already in the car when Edward got in, and peeled of as soon as the door was closed.

The poor baby was crying so hard that I started to freak out. The youngest girl took him from me and began to rock him gently, silent tears streamed down her face. The older one was looking out the window and hugging the dog. He was scared and whimpering. When the baby finally stopped crying the oldest girl turns to look at us and speaks for the first time.

"Thank you so much for your help. We were going crazy trying to figure out what we were going to do. Since all of this began, we have been trapped in our apartment. My name is Heidi, by the way. This is my little sister Gianna, or Gigi, and my baby brother Marcus," she said gesturing with her head. Finally, she took the dog by the face and nuzzled in to his neck. "And this handsome boy is Aro, our lucky charm. If it wasn't for him, I would have died."

I smiled at the dog, and then made the introductions. "I'm Bella, the driver is Emmett and this is Edward," I said to them, gesturing with my hand to each of the guys. "Are you trying to find someone, or is it just you guys?"

Heidi shook her head. "No, My mother…" She paused as her eyes filled with tears and turned back to look out of the window, using the time to compose herself. "She asked me to stay at home because Marcus was sick and she needed go to work. Her boss is an asshole and, well… Gigi stayed too because I'm her ride and she doesn't have a lot of friends," she stopped to take a deep breath. "We were having breakfast when my mother called. She told me not to go outside because something bad was happening and she was going to try to come back home. She worked in a drugstore four blocks from our building, she wasn't too far. When she arrived she went straight to her bedroom and I followed her. She was in bad shape and had a wound on her left shoulder. I helped her clean it. She was okay." Heidi choked back a sob.

"She wanted to talk but I told her to take a nap, we could talk when she woke up. I left her room and closed the door behind me. Ten minutes later we heard noises coming from her room, so I went to see what was happening. Aro was behind me. When I opened the door my mother was standing with her back to me and moaning. I called her name and she turned immediately in my direction." She stopped to scrub angrily at her eyes with the sleeve of her jacket. "I'll never forget her eyes, they were glassy and unfocused. That's when Aro jumped in front of me and started to snarl at her. I was going to reprimand him when my mother growled and threw herself in my direction, snapping her jaw at me, trying to bite me. Everything happened so fast. I tugged Aro away by his collar started backing towards the door, but I tripped and landed on my ass." She sighed. "My mother was there, in front of me. She was about to launch herself at me when Aro jumped and knocked her down. She had a trunk at the foot of her bed. When she fell, she cracked her skull on the trunk and stopped moving. I got up and checked her pulse but she was dead. We called 911 but nobody answered. I was going to go outside for help when Gigi told me she could hear people screaming on the street. When we ran to the window we saw all the carnage." She paused again to look at me. "We left my mother in her room but after a couple of days the smell was so bad we were desperate to get out. Gigi was at the window when she saw your car coming. We acted fast. I grabbed Aro and she took Marcus. We lived on the second floor, so we had to run for it. We thought you wouldn't see us." She smiled, "thanks again for your help."

I returned her smile. "We are headed to Forks, my home town. You're welcome to join us."

Heidi nodded and relaxed back into the seat a little but Gigi was the one who answered. "Of course, thank you, Bella!"

"Well, we're not exactly going to stay in Forks, Bella," Edward said as he turned back to look at us from the front seat.

"What?" I asked confused by the change of plans.

Edward smiled at me before explaining. "Well, we are going to grab some things from our homes and then we are going to La Push. Your dad talked with the Quileutes, letting them know what was happening, and they agreed to let us, the pale faces, stay on James Island. The Chief told me he was going to leave a boat for us at the marina, so we are going to be fine."

I let out the breath I was holding as a sigh of relief. "Then my father is okay? When was the last time you talked to him?" I asked anxiously. Edward was about to answer me but in that moment the car made a sharp turn and we were thrown to the left like a bunch of ragdolls.

"Sorry. My bad!" Emmett yelled, earning a glare from all of us. Even Aro threw him a dirty look. "Edward, man, I know you want to talk to Bella, but right now I need you to help me figure out how we can reach the highway. There are a lot of cars and corpses around." Edward nodded and started to plot with Emmett.

After a while we were finally back on the highway, surprisingly on the wrong side, because, according to Edward, cars and busses were stuck on their way out of the city. Out front we could see a big car wreck blocking most of the highway.

Edward turned to Emmett. "Emmett all the lanes are blocked. Try to get near as possible," he said, then turned back to face me. "Sorry, Bella but we are going to have to ditch your car here to get to the other side of the wreck. Then we can take my cruiser." Then Edward looked at Heidi and Gigi. "Heidi you stay with Aro. Gigi you are going to put Marcus in my backpack, just leave his head out. That way you are going to be able to move better because we need to run again." Edward passed the bag to Gigi, then he looked back to me. "Bella, take your bat and stay close to Heidi and Gigi. I'm going to lead the way while Emmett is going to be at the back."

We all nodded our agreement and started to prepare. A few minutes later we were all set and had arrived at the wreckage. It wasn't a pretty sight and a lot of zombies were there. When they heard the car engine they turned and began walking in our direction.

"Fuck! There are a lot of corpses. We are not going to be able to leave the car!" Edward yelled in frustration.

"Shit! What are we going to do now?" I asked.

"Hold on!" Emmett screamed and then reversed at full speed. He stopped abruptly, revved the engine and contemplated the cars in front of us. After a few minutes of silence, he fastened his seatbelt and told us to do the same. "Make sure you hold on tight to Marcus and Aro," he shouted as we looked on with wide eyes.

"Are you crazy?" Heidi shouted.

"No, I'm not! It's the only chance we have. We can't get out of the car, they'll have us surrounded in seconds. But don't worry, this car is pretty resilient and I'm going through the weakest spot. Edward, just tell me where you left your cruiser."

"I parked on the side of the road but not near this wreck. It's not that far from here so just be careful." Emmett nodded with a look of determination on his face. He turned his eyes back to the wreckage in front of us, revved the car a few more times and then hit the gas.

I had my eyes closed, but I felt the car jolt with each zombie Emmett hit.

"Hold on tight," Edward yelled.

I heard Gigi and Heidi scream as I felt the impact of my car hitting the wreckage. Then it slowed to a stop.

"Come on! We need to get out now!" Emmett said as he desperately unfastened his seatbelt.

"But why? We can take my car too now that we've come through the wreckage," I suggested to Emmett but he shook his head.

"Bella, the axle of the car is broken. It's useless now. I'm sorry. Now, run for the cruiser." I grabbed my bat and climbed out of the back of the car. I noticed Edward was already in his cruiser with the door open as he brushed glass from the driver's seat. Heidi and Gigi were already in the back of the car with baby Marcus and Aro. I was going to go over when I heard a loud explosion. I turned around just in time to see Emmett throw a bottle, with a rag already burning in its neck, onto the other side of the wreckage. A loud explosion quickly followed as the cars and their corpses went up in flames.

And then I heard Edward yelling at me. "Bella! Bella! Get in the fucking car now!" I jumped and ran straight for the car. Emmett was hot on my heels, and slid into the passenger's seat. Edward started the car, gave it a turn and we took off. "What were you thinking Bella?" he snapped, hitting the steering wheel. "You could have been burned!"

"I'm sorry," I told him quietly. He just shook his head and said nothing.

Throughout the drive, Edward told us all he saw on his way to Seattle, but when we saw it, it was worse. I was exhausted and drained emotionally. After a while Heidi and Gigi fell asleep. I decided it was a good time to ask about my dad. "Edward, how is Charlie?"

He looked my way and smiled. "He's okay, don't worry. Got a lot on his hands, but he managed to take to safety the people that remained in town. Jessica and Mike are two of them, and my parents. Most of the people ran when everything started, but our loved ones are with him."

"I'm so glad to hear that," I told him. He continued to tell me what had happened in Forks, but the last part broke my heart.

"The Chief wanted to come and get you but he was needed to lead the people. I volunteered to come for you, of course. The Chief has his hands full. But Bella it's not…" In that moment Marcus started to cry. He was screaming at the top of his lungs and I could smell why. I took him from Gigi and started to rock him, cutting Edward off. I didn't want him to tell me more. Of course he volunteered to help my dad. I was such a fool to think he came for me because he still felt something for me.

A few minutes later Heidi and Gigi woke up, thanks to Marcus. Even Aro started to bark along; it was madness. Thank God we arrived quickly in Hoodsport! We found a little drugstore but it was closed, so Emmett broke in. When he came out he had a bag full of baby stuff and water for all of us. I helped Gigi to change Marcus and when he was fresh and happy, Gigi prepared a bottle with baby formula. Marcus quickly drained it before burping and falling back to sleep. After that we were on the road again. I pretended I was asleep because I didn't want to talk with Edward - I wasn't prepared for disappointment. After all, I was the one who jumped his bones in the alley! I was so ashamed. Maybe he just kissed me back because I took him by surprise. God! I felt so stupid!

After my little rant with myself I tried to relax and at some point I actually fell asleep. When I woke up I could see we had arrived in Port Angeles. I was surprised to see the town intact and only a few corpses walking around. I was practically bouncing out of my seat when I saw the Welcome to Forks sign. I was full of energy and so giddy. I wanted to see my father so badly.

We stopped at the gas station to fill the tank, and after that we went directly to the police station. When we arrived there was a Jeep in the parking lot and that was it. We parked up and Edward told us all to stay put as he climbed out of the car and headed inside. After some time he came back out with a bag and a set of keys in his hands.

"Sorry guys, but I had to see if they left ammo in the armory. Now, Bella, I'm going to give you the keys to the Jeep. Take Emmett with you, go to your house and pack what you are going to need. Heidi and Gigi are coming with me, to my place, and we'll see you in an hour at Newton's Sporting Goods to find some clothes for Emmett. Heidi and Gigi can go to the little boutique in front of Newton's. They should have things to fit them all, even for little Marcus."

Of course he was going with them! But, God! Heidi was like eighteen! Okay I needed to take a deep breath and calm down. I was being irrational. We were in the middle of an emergency for crying out loud!

I don't know how much time I wasted rambling in my head but when I came back to myself everybody was staring at me. Edward was in front of me with his arm extended, offering a set of keys.

"Earth to Bella! Where were you right now?" he asked me, taking my hand and putting the keys in it.

I narrowed my eyes and spat at him, "Nowhere." I stormed off to the Jeep with Emmett trailing behind me.

"Damn girl! What was that out there?" I glared back at him and his arms went up in surrender.

We climbed into the Jeep and I closed my door with more force than necessary. While we drove to my house I was trying to calm down.

Why did I have to be so irrational?

Poor Emmett was siting very still and looking at me from the corner of his eye. When we parked in front of my house he spoke.

"Are you okay, Bella?"

I looked at him and sighed. "Yes, Emmett. I'm very sorry for what happened back there." I was so ashamed. "It's just, I'm…" Emmett cut me off from my rambling.

"Look, Bella. I don't know your history together but I can see it's not unicorns and rainbows. I'm not going to pry. The only thing I'm going to say about it's that you have to talk to him. He is a good guy and he doesn't deserve you snapping at him like that. He pretty much saved our lives back in the city. So please, take it easy on him. Alright?"

Now I felt even worse. Emmett was right. Edward saved my life and I was being rude and mean. I nodded at him. "God, I'm such a bitch. You're right Emmett. I'm going to apologize to him." He smiled at me.

"Okay then. With that settled we had better start packing."

Emmett headed to the kitchen to find something to eat and as soon as I was in my bedroom I took out my suitcase, and filled it with the little clothes I had there, my hiking boots, a few of my beloved books and the spare toiletries I kept in my dresser. I took a good look around my room and said my goodbyes, for now.

Emmett was sitting in my father's chair when I came into the living room. He was sulking.

"There's no food in the kitchen!"

I nodded. "Looks like Charlie cleaned it out. Sorry Emmett. Maybe Edward has something at his house."

He jumped up from the chair very enthusiastically. "Then let's go girl!" He ran towards the front door, taking my suitcase with him. I smiled and shook my head, because I was going to break his heart when I told him I didn't know where Edward lived.
