Short Recap:
"Well lucky enough for you, I'll be right by your side during the long stride to the end of the aisle." He smiled back at me. I felt a small tear slip down my cheek; he reached up and dragged his thumb gently across my cheek and wiped the tear away. "Hey now," he said, his voice soft. "Don't cry, 'Ponine." He put his hand on my chin, gently forcing me to look up at him. I watched in disbelief as he slowly bent down and pressed his lips gently to mine.
Chapter 11: Enjolras
Eponine's lips were soft against mine. I felt her body lean tenderly against mine as she sank slowly into the kiss. As I watched her eyelids fluttered closed, I felt mine begin to droop. I dragged my hands up her back. Her hair tickled my knuckles as I curled my fingers gently in her main of wild, chocolate brown curls.
"Hey, Eponine. Cosette wanted me to—" I felt Eponine jump as Marius' voice filled the room. Her skin prickled with goosebumps when she pulled away from me to look up at him as he slammed her bedroom door angrily. "What do you think you're doing?" he asked, his voice stern. He looked at both of us as though we'd betrayed his deepest trust.
"Marius." Eponine said quietly. I watched the color fad from her face and her eyes glass over instantly. "What are you doing here?" She asked, stepping away from me with her eyes plastered on him. It suddenly became very clear that her affections were still tied to Marius.
"I came to make final arrangements for the ceremony tomorrow. Cosette wanted me to go over the final plan with you. Dawn let me in." He glared directly at me. "Are you two stupid or something?" He asked, his voice getting angrier with each syllable that came out of his mouth. "Are you trying to turn your mistake into an even bigger one? You can't possibly think that you'll be able to make a relationship out of your drunken mistake and—"
"Drunken mistake?" Eponine asked, cutting him off. Her tone was much harsher than any that I had ever heard from her. "Please tell me that you're not referring to my baby, our baby as a mistake." The stare that she sent him was cold as ice. "Yes, Enjolras and I were drunk and we slept together. No, we didn't mean for it to happen, but let me make one thing absolutely clear. Just because we didn't plan on having a baby, does not make our baby a mistake."
I watched the confidence in Marius' eyes flicker. "You two are going to ruin this day for Cosette," He retorted, quickly changing the subject. No doubt to avoid any other icy stares from Eponine.
"How exactly is this going to impact the wedding?" I asked, curiously interjecting myself into the conversation. "How will Cosette know anything happened? We're not planning on letting everyone in on the private aspects of our lives, so unless you're planning on making a big fuss about something that is none of your business, Cosette's big day will still be all about her."
Eponine piped in, "Enjolras is right. This is absolutely none of your business." She looked back at me. "This isn't a big deal. It doesn't mean anything." Her words stung more than I ever expected them to. "It was a one-time thing, and I don't intend on letting it ever happen again. The plans are perfect, and I'll see you at the rehearsal dinner tonight." She urged him toward the door and closed it quietly behind him as he shuffled out.
Never again? I thought to myself as she turned back around. "Never again?" I asked her, slightly hurt, though I never imagined it to. "Eponine, I think that you and I could be really great together, and I think that the baby deserves a real family." I noticed the shock in her eyes as the words fell from my lips. "I'm not saying that we should get married or anything. But I think we owe it to our unborn child to see if there is anything between us worth holding on to."
I felt like a ten ton weight dropped into the room as she stared at me without saying a word. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she finally began to speak. "Enjolras. Marius is right. It would be a mistake to try and make a relationship work just because of one night. Just because we're having a baby doesn't mean that we have to be in a relationship." She said, unable or unwilling, to look me in the eye. "Please, I think you should go."
Defeated, I let her practically shove me out the door. I looked back at her door as I crossed the room to the front door of her flat. As I reached for the door knob, I noticed the sympathetic look that Dawn threw me from across the room. "Just give her some time, Enjolras." She said softly. "She'll come around. Just give her some time."
Marius' Wedding: Eponine's P.O.V
"You look beautiful," Cosette said as she dragged the zipper of my dress up my back. "This is really your color." I stared at myself in the mirror as she finished with the zipper and the dress fell back into place. The silky fabric kissed the skin around my knees, it stretched flatteringly along my expanding waistline. My dark hair was tied up elegantly, with pale pearls pushed in the bun to keep it in place.
"Thank you Cosette," I said turning to smile at her. "You look even more beautiful. You make a perfect bride." The white fabric of her dress mixed perfectly with her sun-tanned skin and blonde hair. Her lace veil fell down below her waistline, and rested perfectly against her blonde curls.
"Ladies," a voice said from around the door to the bridal suite. "It's almost time for the bridesmaids to walk. The groom is at the end of the aisle waiting for his bride."
Before I knew it, I was standing at the other end of the aisle, arm in arm with Enjolras. "Listen, about last night," he whispered softly as we began to walk down the aisle. "I'm really sorry Eponine."
"Enjolras, please forget about it." I whispered back. I looked at Marius standing at the end of the aisle waiting for Cosette. Suddenly I felt sick to my stomach. My idea to skip breakfast was catching up with me, and I wished that I could go back in time and make my choice all over again. Even though I thought I could do this without my feelings getting in the way.
I sighed as I approached my assigned spot as Cosette began to walk down the aisle. As I watched the lace veil fall against her hair with each step she took, I began to get dizzy. I felt my feet fall out from under me, and suddenly I was staring up at the ceiling before everything went black.
Woah. It got a little touch and go there at the end. I know this chapter isn't the best, but the next one should be up tomorrow night. It's already written, I'm just doing some final edits. This chapter was awful, but the next chapter should be a lot better. I'm excited to see where this story goes, so please let me know what you think and if you have any ideas on where I should take it! Ta-ta for now, my dear readers! Expect an update some time tomorrow!
