Katara's POV
I continue crying in Zuko's arms as the villagers carried Hama away to jail. I try to stop crying but I just couldn't, I was surprised that Zuko didn't show any signs of annoyance.
"How can you be so calmed? In any chance, I could bloodbend you next?" I was really worried, what if I lose control over this newly found ability? What if without thinking I end up killing Zuko?
"I am not going to lie, there is a chance you will lose control but I know that you would never intentionally hurt me. You are brave and strong and would never give up on anything or anyone." I never knew Zuko, out of many people, could be so caring and gentle.
"But what if I lose control? When I bloodbent Hama, I felt so powerful, so… strong. For a second, I wanted more, I wanted to take full control."
"But you manage to stop, didn't you? Even, if you really wanted to give her a piece of your mind. You, unlike many I've known, never back down. You keep fighting no matter how strong the enemy is." (A/N: I am not sure where I got the phase from or if was it said or written right, probably from a book or movie.
"I still don't get why you believe in me." He hugged me a bit tighter.
"Because I trust and care about you." He said it as quiet as possible.
He… trusts and cares about me? Would he be saying the truth? Do I trust him? Yes, I realized. I feel safe in his arms, I feel as if he would protect me. Is this trust or something more? So many questions were running through my head but I only gave him one tiny response.
"I trust you to." He stiffened but then relaxed. Should I have said that I cared about him too? Do I? Yes, I answer myself once again.
"I also care about you a lot." My cheeks were a dark shade of red. Did I just say a lot, to his face?
I realized that I had stopped crying. He pulled back from the embrace with a confused face. I then noticed how cold it really was considering the fact that I was very warm in Zuko's arms. I looked into his golden eyes.
"You really care." I frowned, had he not seen how worried I was? She was practically crying over him.
"Of course I care, when Hama bloodbent you, I was scared. I didn't know what to do, seeing you in so much pain… I just… I just wanted to wake up from this nightmare and see you asleep safe and sound."
"I know how you feel, when the villagers told me about Hama I ran as fast as I could to find you, to be with you. The thought of losing you and probably never seeing you again… made me want to find you even more." He pulled me into another embrace.
The wind picked up and it started to rain, I hope the villagers already have Hama in a dry place because it wouldn't be safe having her near water at this time. We pulled from our embrace and I bended the water droplets around us shielding us from the rain. It was very cold and these were one of the rare reasons that I would love to wear a parka in the Fire Nation. It is another reason, the only one, that I envy fire benders. If they are cold, they just heat themselves up. We started walking toward the town and though I really didn't really like the idea of returning to Hama's house. I was giving a few sneak glances to Zuko. I couldn't help but smile the whole way to… to… where are we even going?
"Um, Zuko, where are we going?"
"Where are we going?"
"We are going to town to find any store that is still open. I didn't get to buy any food."
"Oh… hey could we, you know, avoid going near the… house?" He smiled.
"Don't worry; we won't head back there while I am still living." I smiled back but inside I was a bit worried. The image of Zuko in pain and almost dying really sunk in to me. I held my tears and looked away so Zuko won't think something is wrong with me. Luckily, there was only like three stores that are still open. We settled in a cave in which I surprisingly got so use to sleeping on the floor that I feel weird in a bed. I was glad it stopped raining because I was exhausted. Zuko left for some fire wood but hasn't returned. I was getting worried and very sleepy, my eyes were heavy but I refused to sleep until Zuko returns. I waited and when twenty minutes passed I got up and started to go to the direction that Zuko took. I was walking while I bent cold water to my face to beat my exhaustion. Suddenly out of nowhere I feel this pang in my chest, it was like a scared or worried feeling. As if by instinct, I went running straight forward. I started to hear some people up ahead. I ran even faster when I heard sounds of a guy familiar guy's voice. It sounded like… like… Zuko! I saw two figures far ahead but I couldn't make out their faces since it was dark. I saw one of the figures bend fire while the other dodge it and it looked like it was bending but nothing moved.
I saw a pair or glowing golden eyes and I tensed up. It was Zuko and he was having an intense fight with someone. The person had a pale dark blue hood with some sort of blue diamond that holds it together right under her neck.
"Zuko!" I screamed. I notice the hooded person shot icicles aiming at his head. It is a waterbender. It sounds like a woman crying and screaming at every thrust of water. It looked evenly matched until Zuko shot a fireball at her stomach which made her lose balance and fall. I just stared not knowing what to do. She got up and Zuko took a fighting stance. The person saw me and froze but quickly recovered and looked straight at Zuko.
"Why are you doing this?! Who are you?!" Zuko started shouting but the person didn't react. It took a very familiar stance and clenched its fists. I froze as the color drained from my face. It felt much colder, the person made motions with her hands and Zuko yelped in pain while looking in a terrible position. The figure before me is a bloodbender. I was stuck in this position not moving as fear crept up to me. Is this person Hama? No, Hama is much shorter and would be probably too weak. I used water from the plants and aimed at the person but before I could do anything the person swung her hand to the side and my body did the same ending up hitting a tree. She was strong and powerful but I could tell she was hurting. I could hear Zuko scream harder and his muscles were tightening. I could hear him trying to say my name.
"K-k-Katara, r-r-un an-d sa-a-ve your-s-self." No. I clenched my fist. I felt the bloodbender take control of me as I rose.
"NO! I will never turn my back on people who need me! Especially if it's you." I whispered the last part quietly. And with that I felt the blood benders control leave our bodies as we fell down. I dragged myself as fast as I can to Zuko. The person looked shocked or regretful. I knew I didn't do anything, maybe the person willingly stopped? I stopped thinking about that and grabbed water and immediately start healing him no matter how tired I was. I felt my chi slowly leave my body and move toward Zuko. I hadn't realized that I was crying. I moved to his arms and legs as I healed the twisted veins and muscles. His heart was beating fast and I could tell the person also tried to freeze his blood but didn't count on that he was a firebender. I felt dizzy but kept going and ignoring the motionless person by our side.
"Please" I whispered. "Please work."
I couldn't keep up much longer but to my luck Zuko stirred and quickly shot up full recovered and energized. I must have given him all my energy because in any second I feel that I would faint. Zuko looked at me and his mouth was moving but I couldn't hear the words. I started seeing double and everything went hazy. The person came and whispered something to Zuko and I was looking up and everything went black.
.o..oo…ooo….oooo…..ooooo
Katara's POV
I feel the temperature go low but I wasn't freezing to death. I looked around seeing the familiar white – blue sky and white frozen tundra, the South Pole. I don't know how I got here or how I changed from my Fire Nation cloths to my pale blue Water Tribe clothes and parka. I looked down and saw my boots deep in the snow. Where was Zuko? How did I get here? My questions were soon forgotten as I saw a familiar figure just up ahead. Wait… is that who I think it is? Adrenaline rushed through my veins as I ran as fast as I can.
"Sokka!" I cried in happiness seeing him healthy and alive. He turned around and we gave each other a tight embrace. He looked at me with a smile, I asked him many questions but it seemed that he couldn't hear me. He stopped smiling and turned around walking away till he disappeared. The wind picked up as I started crying and shouting out Sokka's name. I was in the village but it looked abandoned. I was alone; everything looked like nobody has ever been around in a long time. I heard people in chains behind me. The scenery changed and I was in the Fire Nation but I still had my Water Tribe clothes on. I turned and gasped. I watched all the villagers from the South Pole dressed in Fire Nation prisoner clothes. They were skinnier that normal and had tears in their eyes.
"Why did you leave us Katara?" A little boy said weakly.
"I-I didn't leave you. I was taken, what happened?"
"You abandoned us, the Fire Nation came and you weren't there to protect us."
"I-I-" I didn't know what to say.
"You are a traitor."
"No I not-"
"You are traveling with a firebender." I said nothing.
"Traitor, traitor, traitor." Everyone began to chant at the same time.
I turned to run away but stopped at the sight of a very beat up and bruised Sokka.
"Sokka! Are you okay?" I rushed over to him but he put a hand up meaning I should stop.
"Don't come near me, you abandoned us, look what happened to me." He started shouting at me.
"You are running around with that firebender, are you even thinking about our safety?" I saw pure disappointment in his eyes.
"I thought you were my sister. The South Pole is extinct because of you! Mom would be disappointed of you." Everything went dark.
"Katara?" I tried covering my ears.
"Katara!" It didn't work. I suddenly opened my eyes and shot up.
"Katara." I turned and saw Zuko with a worried face.
"Katara, are you okay? You were crying and shaking in you sleep. I thought you were having a nightmare."
I started crying and hugged my knees tightly. I was happy that it was just a nightmare. Even though it was very short, it really hurt me. I can't stop imagining Sokka and those words he said.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, I remembered Zuko was here.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I stayed quiet for a moment.
"I had a dream that my village was captured and it was my entire fault. My brother was disappointed and said that my mother was also disappointed as well. It was a short dream but it still hurt."
"Well, it was just a dream about your worries, I'm sure none of that really happened." I could detect of awkwardness in his voice. He must not be the comfort type.
"But it's true! I am a traitor. I am traveling with the enemy." I realized what I said and quickly shook my hands.
"N-not that you are my enemy it's just that my village wouldn't take it so well."
"I know what you mean; my father wasn't psyched about me going with you either. I guess that makes us both traitors." He put up a reassuring smile.
"I guess, but I still can't forget the part about my brother."
"Would your brother really say that?"
"Of course not, he's my brother and no matter what I do we would never hate each other. Siblings are forever." Zuko looked like he was in a deep thought. I regretted those words knowing his relationship with Azula isn't in good terms right now.
"You won't have to worry about that happening anymore if you are sure he wouldn't do that." I put my head on my knees. I notice it was morning and by cue my stomach complained for food.
Zuko reached for a bag that I didn't know we had and pulled a bowl of rice. My eyebrows shot up.
"You made this?"
"I may not be the best tea maker but I know how to cook."
I inspected the bowl and took a small bite. I was surprised, it was actually very good.
"Told you so." I just playfully slapped his shoulder and continued eating.
"Zuko, what happened last night when I found you? Who was the bloodbender?"
"Well, it was very weird. I had gotten enough firewood and I was heading back when I kind of got lost. After searching and searching I finally found my way back. When I was in a distance from the cave, I heard a sound of a person who had been watching me. She was running away and I went after her. I wanted to know why she was following me. It was dark and I didn't want to use firebending in case she saw me. I was about to give up when she lunged at me. I didn't know who she was but she seemed familiar. She started waterbending at me and sooner bloodbending at me. I then notice you there; she was only focused on me until you started fighting. She uh kind of beat you in one blow." He smirked while I frowned.
"Hey, it wasn't my fault I was tired from the battle between Hama and I. Don't you dare laugh! You were also helpless."
"I am not a waterbender and I was already too weak." I rolled my eyes. "Whatever."
"Anyways, she must have heard the words you said." I raised my eyebrows.
"You know 'I will never turn my back on people who need me'." I nodded.
"It seemed to affect her or something because she let us go and let you heal me, thanks by the way."
"So she just stopped?" He nodded. Sokka was right, (I'd never admitted it) words do have power.
"Yeah, then you fainted. I couldn't get up and she was getting closer. She bent down and handed me a bag. She was crying and said that she was sorry, that your words made her realize something. Something she should have known. She begged forgiveness and left." I could tell he wasn't telling me something but I ignored it.
"Wow, two bloodbenders in one night. You make weird enemies."
He was in a thinking position and then shrugged. "Yeah."
"What was the bag?"
"I was going to wait until you woke up to open it." He got a light blue bag and opened it. I saw his face lit up from his usual frown as he took out two duo swords, his duo swords. He separated them, swished them around, put them back together and put it in this pouch thing on his back where he originally has it. (A/N: I don't know what it is called but it's were someone keeps their sword when they are traveling.) He smirked satisfied that he got his swords back.
"What else is in the bag?" I went to check in the bag hoping something mine was there, like my necklace! My face fell as I saw that there was just a small box with some pretty carvings. I shook it and I heard a clinging sound, like as if there was something on a pillow so when shook it wouldn't break.
"What's that?"
"It's a box but it-" I tried to open it. "- is locked."
I handed him the box and he examined it.
"There isn't a keyhole or anything, just millimeter deep hole with a flower shape." His eyes widen as he searched for something in his pocket. He took out a tile that belonged to a pai sho board. He looked at the tile then at the box.
"Do you think…" He just shrugged. He put the tile in the hole and I heard a click.
"What's inside?"
He hid the box from my sight.
"What are you-"
"I can't show you." What?
"Why?"
"The lady said that it was important that you open it when you really need it."
"How am I supposed to know if I don't even have an idea what is in there!"
"I am sorry Katara but she made me swear and I am making you swear to."
"What!?"
"Katara-"
"But-"
"Just-"
"No!"
"Come on-"
"Zuk-"
"Katara." I gave a huff knowing I wasn't going to win this shortly worded conversation.
"Fine, could you at least tell me if it's good?"
"It is."
"Why can you see it?"
"Because I can." I could hear him being annoyed.
"Ugh, your impossible!"
"I know." He reached for something else in his pocket. I saw an orange-red glow from his hand as he pulled out Sozin's stone."
"What are you doing? Oh and how did you get the tile?"
"You really like to talk don't you?" I just gave him a frown which he returned. I am surprised he doesn't have wrinkles from all this frowning he does.
"I am going to keep the stone safe in here and I got this tile from my uncle."
He put the box away and he started packing the leftover food. We left the town as fast as we can.
