Author's Note: I know I haven't written in a while, but I'm here to make up for that, I promise this story hasn't been forgotten. Sayin that, I don't know if you're gonna love me or hate me once you read this, but enjoy! No beta, be nice!
The lights of sickbay were blinding as Kathryn Janeway opened her eyes. Pain and reflexes caused her to close them again. She wracked her mind to remember what caused her to end up in sickbay, something she avoided at all cost, but came up blank.
"Computer, decrease lights by 50%." The beep of the computer signaled to her that the lights were lowered. With this in place, she attempted to open her eyes again. This was more tolerable, at least for now. She looked to her left and saw Chakotay sitting there, sleeping in a chair. Her mind tried to go over everything she remembered leading up to her arriving at this point. Her brain decided it wanted to go back to a happy moment and she was immediately flooded with memories from her baby shower. Then and only then did she look at her stomach and notice for the first time that she wasn't pregnant anymore. The panic that consumed her was breathtaking, literally.
"Chak..." Her voice broke in the middle of her statement. She closed her eyes again. This couldn't be good. He probably had been sitting in that chair every moment he wasn't on the bridge watching over her ship. "Chakotay." She tried again, glad that she was able to get his name out this time. She could tell when her voice reached his ears. His eyes shot open and he was up and by her side.
"Hey beau…" He started but was cut off by her onslaught of questions.
"The baby? Is it ok? What happened?" Her eyes pleaded for answers and it broke his heart to see her in such pain. His mind was taken back to the birth of their baby girl.
He knew that Katherine wouldn't survive the delivery planet side but there was no way, at that point, to get her back to the ship. He had been pleading with the gods when Katherine went into active labor. They did what they could but the doctor informed them both that the baby would be arriving soon. Arriving naturally, one life beginning and another almost surely ending. Katherine had resolved long ago that she would do everything she could to have a healthy baby. That didn't end for her just because things suddenly turned fatal. Katherine always has and always would stand up for the underdog. It's what Chakotay loved about her but what also scared him at the same time. This all scared him now more than ever. They set Katherine up in the back of the cave, the crew present in the cave trying to do what they could to provide the couple with some privacy. At that point, everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before the baby was born and they would potentially watch as their captain died as a result. They also knew their captain and knew that was the only acceptable outcome for her. A lot of the crew started working double duty helping move the rock. They all suddenly had a new drive to get them out of the cave.
The biggest, most unexpected miracle happened just as the doctor was prepping Janeway for delivery. Crew members close to the front of the rubble started to disappear. At first it cause a major panic. They all recognized the beam of a transporter but could not tell where it was originating from and why it was only taking a few crew members. They ran back to tell Chakotay what was happening.
"Commander Chakotay. We're sorry to interrupt but something is happening. So far, 4 crewmembers have been transported somewhere! We have no idea where, they just disappeared." The young Ensign looked nervous and overly excited all at the same time.
This could either be the best thing in the world or the worst thing to happen to them! Suddenly they saw the beam of the transporter yet again. This time it was depositing items instead of taking away crewmembers. The crew present with phasers had them drawn but quickly put them away when they realized what was before them. Someone had transported pattern enhancers to their location. Voyager must have found a way to get to them from the outside! It was truly all the miracle they needed. Unfortunately it came just as the doctor was instructing the captain to take her first push.
"Doctor, we have patter enhancers!" Chakotay said as he ran back to his wife. "We can get you guys to Voyager!" Chakotay looked at the scene before him and immediately recognized that he might have been too late.
"She's started to push already. If there's to be any hope of making it through this we need to get to Voyager, and I mean right now!" The doctor said, never taking his eyes off of his patient.
Chakotay didn't need to be told twice. He ran and started helping the others get the three devices put together and set up. He heard Katherine scream and knew it was moving along and things were getting more and more serious. He couldn't lose his Katherine now, not after everything they had been through together. He wouldn't. With the flick of a switch the last beam was activated and the triangle was set. It only took a matter of seconds for Voyager to initiate the transport. It was technically only seconds but for every one he had to watch his sweet wife suffering in pain, it could have been an eternity.
That was a day ago. Katherine and the baby were both doing well. Katherine was touch and go there once the baby was born due to a partial rupture but they were on Voyager and the doctor was immediately able to tend it while Paris helped with the newborn. Chakotay had never felt so torn in his entire life. He wanted to be with both of his girls at that moment but the decision felt impossible. He found himself standing in the middle of sickbay looking back and forth between the two until the sound of baby cry filled his ears. Immediately he sprung in her direction. There was nothing he could do for his Katherine right now, but he could be there for their child. Katherine would want that anyway. The doctor did excellent work and managed to stop the bleeding and repairing the tissue damage the occurred during the rupture. It was still hard on Katherine's body and she lost a lot of blood in the process so the doctor decided to let her sleep it off. Everyone agreed that it would be easier on all involved if she got the necessary rest before she was awake and able to boss people around.
Now Chakotay was looking at his wife, whose eyes held the same terror he experienced when he felt the first trimmer. Luckily, he could spare her so much right now.
"She's fine. Perfectly fine. She sleeping in her bassinette over there." Chakotay said pointed to the incubator that against the wall in her room.
"Oh thank goodness. I was worried that something happened…"Janeway said as she tried to block the tears from falling! "Can I see her please!" She begged as she tried to sit up.
"Hey, take it easy. I'll bring her over. She's been wanting to meet mommy anyway!" Chakotay helped sit Katherine up so she could more easily handle the baby when he brought her over.
"Thank you Chakotay. The cave in is starting to come back to me now. Was anyone hurt?" She would never stop being the captain and worrying about her crew was part of the job. Here she was glad she had someone who understood that she could be captain and run this ship, but still be left speechless by the power and beauty that is found in a new born child. Janway was grinning from ear to ear by the time Chakotay arrived with her little girl.
"Everyone is fine. We all made it back to the ship. Including and extra crewman. By the way. We need to name her. We've already gotten about 50 suggestions from the crew." Chakotay watched Katherine's face as she held their little angel. He was so blessed to have both of them. He would make sure to thank his spirit guide tonight.
"Jade Elizabeth". Janeway said without looking up from the child in her arms.
"What? That wasn't a name on the list. It's beautiful though. Where did you get that name?" Chakotay sat with a puzzled look across his face.
"I just thought of it and it seemed to fit her so perfectly, like this all was meant to be." Janeway said as she continue to stare at the little baby.
"Then it will be. I like it and I'm glad we finally agree on something where this baby is concerned." Chakotay took her hand and sat next to her.
As he watched them he said a prayer in his heart for his blessings and promised a vision quest later. This baby was going to be a game changer, but good thing the captain was ready for the fight. Chakotay chuckled as he imagined some scenes between the two and then grin and focused back on Katherine. There was plenty of that time later. For now, it was time to enjoy being a family.
