Sorry if its a little long but I found it hard to break into two chapters.
Rossi looked at his clock; it was 2:30am. He sighed and sat up on the edge of his bed, swinging his feet to the carpeted floor, feeling his feet sink into the soft fibers. He looked towards his bedroom door and saw a sliver of light, its rays were pleading for him to come into the hallway. It was a silent cry from a terrified woman, only meters down the hall.
Under different circumstances if Emily had awakened during the night, she probably would have been quiet as possible, careful not to disturb anyone. Now this ray of light, screaming for attention was her subtle way of letting Rossi know she was awake.
Rossi hesitated to go to her. He didn't have the right words, he didn't know what to say and then he thought of what he told Hotch a week earlier, Just be there for her. Rossi took a deep breath and just as his hand clutched the knob of his door, he heard muffled sobs. Wearily he rubbed his hand through his tousled hair and opened the door. Emily was crying, and the sound was distinct enough to know the cry was out of fear not of pain.
Emily was holding a pillow, digging her nails into the softness of its fibers as she hid next to the dresser, pressing herself against the wall. Desperately she tried making herself as small as possible, but the task was a large one considering her casts and the condition of her body. Suddenly she heard footsteps and gasped. Quickly she quieted herself and hid her face behind the pillow as if by magic, if she didn't see who was coming they couldn't see her. She could feel her heart pounding out of her chest. The footsteps got closer…closer…they stopped in the doorway. Emily held her breath when she heard…
"Emily?" Rossi called to her. He heard the air leave her lungs in relief, giving away her location. A few more steps inside the room, he looked to his left and barely saw her knees sticking out on the other side of the dresser. "Emily." He said with a worried tone. Swiftly he moved in front of her, kneeling before her so they were at eye level.
"I can't do this Rossi. I'm so scared." Emily gasped for air between sobs.
Rossi took the pillow, so he could better see her face.
Emily shivered when the warmth of the pillow vacated her. She tried to make herself smaller as she cried, "He was here Rossi."
"Who was?"
"I can't do it, I can't say his name."
Rossi gently grabbed her shoulders, "Look at me."
Emily raised her head.
Rossi tenderly moved the matted strands of hair, from her tear stained face, "You can say his name."
Emily shook her head no.
"Yes you can. Say it, say his name."
Emily again shook her head no.
"Emily you have to be able to talk about it or it will haunt you the rest of your life. Again tell me who it was that was here." His voice was soft but demanding.
"Harvey." She barely whispered.
"Say it louder Emily! Tell me what he did to you! Be honest with yourself!"
"Harvey! It was Harvey! He hurt me Rossi! He beat me and made me feel like I was no better than a piece of dirt! I was so scared! Oh God, and his eyes. I could see it, he wanted to kill me! He enjoyed what he did to me! He laughed at me! He made me clean! And…" Emily stopped.
"Tell me Emily, keep going! Tell me what he did to you!"
"He raped me! He tore my clothes off like an animal and I was his piece of meat! When I got off the floor I had it in my mind to kill him and I was going to. I grabbed a broken chair leg and just before I hit him, he flipped me, body slamming me on the coffee table. When I came to that's when I decided to escape." Emily broke down leaning into Rossi.
Rossi wrapped his arms around her and said, "It will be okay."
"No!" She leaned back, "He's here, he's always here. Every time I close my eyes I see him. Tonight he was standing in the doorway smiling, gloating about how he won."
"But he didn't win Emily. You won, you escaped and you are a stronger person because of that."
"I don't feel stronger."
Rossi wrapped his arms around her again, "It takes time and with each day that passes you find that it hurts a little less. Eventually you will put back the pieces of yourself."
"I'll never be the old Emily." She cried. "Harvey stole her from me."
"Your right, but I'm willing to bet you will find a stronger person than you were before. And if that's the case then the BAU better watch out for one Emily Prentiss."
Emily almost smiled.
"Do I sense a smile?" Rossi asked.
Emily's tears subsided and she leaned away from him, "Thank you."
"You are welcome, now how about trying to get some sleep?"
Emily's head drooped. She didn't want to sleep.
"How about I pull up a comfortable chair and sit with you?"
"I couldn't ask you to do that." Emily said, feeling like a little baby.
"You didn't, I offered."
For the first time in awhile Emily actually smiled, "Okay then."
Rossi stood up and looked at Emily sitting in the floor, "You are going to have to start finding different hiding places, well at least until you get better."
"I've got one good leg, if you'll grab the upper part of my good arm."
Rossi helped her up and over to the bed. He watched her lay down and covered her up.
"You won't leave?" She asked before closing her eyes.
"I promise, I won't. Now try to get some rest." Emily nodded and closed her eyes.
Rossi grabbed a comfortable seat and a blanket. He watched as Emily drifted off to sleep and said, "If I had a daughter I'd want her to be just like you."
Silence filled the room and both fell asleep.
Four weeks passed and Emily was taken to the hospital to be relieved of her casts. Hotch accompanied her to the appointment. Over the past four weeks their relationship blossomed into a profound love displayed by affection, comfort, security and given unconditionally by one man, Aaron Hotchner.
Emily still struggled with her nightmares, insecurities, embarrassment and shame. She shared these vulnerabilities with Rossi and Hotch, as they helped her through each terrifying moment, helping her move forward. The one thing she still couldn't let go was dependency. She needed someone by her side and that someone was Hotch. After the first night he was with her every single night since then, taking up a temporary residence in Rossi's mansion.
Strauss gave Hotch a leave of absence allowing him to be with Emily. Morgan was acting Unit Chief while Hotch was away, continuing to lead the team on various cases. The team worked quickly and efficiently with each case that came across JJ's desk, this allowed them more free time with Emily. Emily always dreaded when the team came over, she felt so ashamed and embarrassed but as the weeks passed the visits started to become easier. She departed from being withdrawn and strived to be sociable. Happiness started to seep back into her soul, but one thing kept her from completely being able to heal and that was the uncertainty of Harvey's condition. Emily wasn't sure she could bear to co-exist on the same planet as this man, and the fear that consumed her when she thought about it was almost unbearable.
The car ride to the hospital was filled with a silent anxiety until Emily asked, "Are you going to speak to the doctors about Harvey?"
"Yes. I'm hoping they will have something with more certainty to tell us."
Emily looked out the window and the last words said before arriving at the hospital was, "I wish he was dead."
Hotch placed his hand on her knee, he wanted Harvey dead too but keeping his own wants silent and listening to Emily was more important than getting ramped up on the unknown.
They arrived at the hospital and Emily was led to a bed behind a curtain where Hotch stayed with her while they removed her casts and gave her a printed version of physical therapy exercises she needed to do. Hotch and Emily was instructed on the proper techniques while physically going through each exercise with the nurse. Hotch watched as Emily grimaced in pain, from lack of movement over the past six weeks. I'm here baby, I'm here.
The trauma was still apparent; even though Harvey was incapacitated he still caused her pain. With every flinch, wince and moan Emily vividly remembered how she received each injury. This hurts so bad, don't scream, don't scream for them to stop you can take it. Emily closed her eyes and with the next surge of pain she saw him, Harvey, he was laughing at her. Quickly she opened her eyes and gasped.
Hotch looked at the nurse and said, "That's enough." His voice was adamant and demanding. He noticed the nurse flinch at his tone and he said more subtly, "Please, give us a minute."
"Of course." And the nurse bowed out.
"What's wrong?" Hotch asked, gently placing his fingers under her chin, raising her head so he could look into her eyes.
"I saw him again. It was the pain, it triggered something and I saw him." Her voice was quiet and in it was a slight tremble, giving away the fear she so often felt. Before Hotch could respond Emily looked at him, her lips tightened and she displayed a fierce determination, "Find out if he's going to make it?"
Hotch tenderly kissed her forehead, "I will. Are you going to be okay by yourself?"
Emily nodded her head. Hotch left and she waited impatiently for him to return. The minutes ticked away like hours and then she heard his footsteps stop on the other side of the curtain. He paused too long before entering and then Emily heard the dreaded sigh. She felt her heart stop, it can't be.
Hotch ran his fingers through his hair and stepped behind the curtain with Emily.
Emily's eyes stung with tears, "He's going to recover isn't he?"
Hotch didn't respond right away, giving away the answer.
Emily looked down, hoping her loose hair would hide her face as the tears rolled down her cheeks, "I wish Morgan would have killed him."
Hotch walked over to Emily and wrapped his arms around her. For the first time Hotch received an un-hindered hug and felt her hands grab the back of his shirt. Gently he pressed her head against his chest, "It's going to be okay."
"Let's not kid ourselves. You know better than anyone guys like Harvey always beat the system."
Hotch cupped her face in his hands, "You listen to me, I don't care how long it takes, I will fight and keep fighting till Harvey pays for what he's done."
Emily leaned back into Hotch's chest. "It feels so good to wrap my arms around you."
Hotch again held her for a moment. He kissed the top of her head and squeezed her a little tighter, "Let's go home." He whispered. Hotch felt her nod against his chest and they left.
The rest of the day was fair as Emily adjusted to the new kind of aches from her stiffened joints and refigured bones. Hotch forced her to continue to rest while he cleaned and cooked. She didn't argue and found a comfortable place on the couch, where she spent most of the day. Eventually night would fall and with night comes a whole new kind of terror.
The night routine before bed was like clockwork. Emily would change her clothes and wait for Hotch while sitting on the edge of the bed. Alone in the room, chills would creep up her spine. She would begin to tremble and her heart would begin to pace. Her senses would become heightened and sometimes she would break out in a cold sweat. Every little sound would make her jump and question who would be lurking around the corner.
Tonight was like any other, but in her trance she had clinched the edge of the mattress, ignoring the aching pain radiating through her arms. She felt herself starting to panic and just before she started losing control she said, "Hotch?"
Hotch was in the bathroom a few steps down the hallway when he heard Emily call his name, "I'm coming baby!" Emily had never called him before he was finished in the bathroom and her voice sounded urgent. As he took the few big steps towards the bedroom he said, "Hold on, I'm coming." When he reached the doorway he saw her almost in a panic. Swiftly he ran to her and knelt down, "What is it? What's wrong?"
Emily started gasping for air.
Hotch pushed her hair behind her ear and traced the outline of her face, "It's okay. Breath, take slow, deep breaths." Emily looked at him, making eye contact to let him know she was listening. "You're okay, deep breaths." Hotch breathed with her and slowly her breathing started to return back to normal, "Good, that's better. That's my girl." Hotch smiled at her and pulled her in for a hug. In the hug Hotch's face went from a smile to that of deep concern, "What scared you?" He asked still holding her tightly.
Emily's muffled voice, against his shoulder said, "It's him…"
Hotch could feel Emily starting to shake beneath his grasp. "It's okay, I'm here."
"Lay with me." Emily asked.
Hotch pulled away, "Okay, let me get the light."
Emily grabbed his arm, "No!" Emily jumped at the urgency in her own voice and then said more quietly, "Please, leave it on."
"Okay." Hotch held up the comforter for Emily to crawl under and then he pulled it over top of him as he slid in.
Emily laid her head against his bare chest and ran her fingers down the contours of his toned abdomen. When her fingers reached his belly button she wrapped her arm tightly around his waist and snuggled closely into him.
Hotch held her tightly with one arm and used the other rub his fingers through her hair. "Things will get better Emily, I promise."
Two months passed and Emily was cleared to go back to work. Alone she stepped onto the cement of the parking garage. She looked around and welcomed that familiar smell giving her a feeling of comfort and security. Smiling she locked her door and headed towards the glass doors of the BAU.
Inside everyone was trying to act as normal as possible.
Rossi kept pacing the catwalk, trying hard to be inconspicuous.
Hotch was constantly looking out his office window, she should be here by now.
Reid and Morgan kept glancing at one another; every so often looking at the case file they had open on their desk.
JJ and Garcia were quietly preparing the conference room for a briefing but their eyes were glued to the doors of the bull pin. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife.
Emily was on the elevator, she looked at her watch and, "I can't believe I'm late my first day back." Suddenly she heard that familiar ding and sped walk off the elevator and into the bull pen. The first words she said as she bolted into the room was, "Guys I'm sorry I'm late." She walked over to her desk and flopped down in her chair.
A sigh of relief could be felt around the room. Rossi walked to her desk and said, "Glad to see your back."
"Thanks. Again I'm sorry I'm late, Tiger chewed a hole in my couch this morning."
Morgan and Rossi flashed a smile.
Reid didn't and said seriously, "Does your dog ever sleep? He literally barked all night."
"Ah come on it wasn't all night, neighbor." Emily said, leaning over to give Reid a friendly punch in the shoulder.
"No actually it was all night. It wasn't constant but literally he barked every hour on the hour."
Morgan interjected, "Come on Reid, he's just a pup, maybe he needs a friend."
"Nope one is enough for me to handle, thanks." Emily said. Emily looked towards the BAU room and saw JJ and Garcia standing in the doorway.
The blondes were smiling and Garcia was wiping away a tear. JJ led the way down to the others with Garcia in tow. JJ sat on top of Emily's desk and said, "I hope you're ready to get started." JJ handed Emily a case file.
"More than ready…" Emily flipped open the case file and briefly skimmed through the crime scene photos, "…okay maybe not as ready as I was a few moments ago. This looks like a bad one."
"You have no idea." JJ said.
Emily closed the file and looked towards Hotch's office. She noticed he quickly moved his head, looking back down at his desk. She smiled, "If you'll excuse me I think someone is waiting for a good morning."
JJ quietly sang, "Emily and Hotch sitting in a tree…"
Emily felt herself blush, but kept walking towards Hotch's office. She walked in uninvited and said, "Good Morning." Her excitement and new found happiness was bubbling over.
"Close the door." Hotch said seriously and almost as if he was mad. When he heard the door close he looked up at Emily and said, "Have a seat."
"You know you're making me feel like I'm at the principal's office." Emily took a seat and could clearly tell Hotch was upset about something.
Hotch threw down his pen and leaned back in his chair, "You should have called me."
Emily smiled, "Do I sense a hint of worry in your voice?"
"This is serious Emily." Hotch let out an aggravated breath, "Emily, I'm happy that you want to live alone, but I don't like it. Jack is okay with it if you want to come live with us."
"I know he is and I'm so thankful for the gesture, but for me to move on I have to know that I can live alone and regain the independence I once had."
Hotch was still aggravated, "It's not independence if you have three chain locks and three dead bolts on every door in your apartment, that's paranoia."
Emily stood up and walked around his desk, "Okay independence with a few revisions." Emily gently sat herself in Hotch's lap and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Emily not here." Hotch said looking out his office window.
Emily ignored the team looking into his office, "I've got to do this myself, please. You and the team have done so much for me; I just really need to do this alone."
Hotch ignored the smirking faces glaring in his window; he wrapped his arms around Emily's waist and said, "You are quite a woman."
"Why thank you Mr. Hotchner, now how about a good morning kiss?"
Hotch scooted Emily off his lap and stood up, "Not here baby."
"Ah, bummer. You owe me."
"Can't wait." Hotch said, returning to his stoic demeanor.
"You could at least sound excited about it." Emily said walking towards his office door.
Hotch grabbed the case file, "You'd know I was if you sat on my lap again."
Just then both Emily and Hotch heard Morgan's voice resonate through the bull pen, infiltrating through the walls of Hotch's office, "Hotch!"
Emily and Hotch looked at one another wide-eyed and rushed into the bull pen at the urgency of Morgan's voice. They stopped abruptly when they reached the team. Hotch looked at Morgan who was holding an 8x10 photo. "What is it?" Hotch asked taking the photo. His heart stopped.
"Oh God." Garcia said, looking at the photo for the first time since Morgan pulled it out of the envelope.
JJ leaned closer to Hotch and looked for herself, "It can't be."
"What?" Reid was trying to look over Rossi.
Rossi and Hotch looked at one another and then at Emily.
"What is it?" Emily asked.
Hotch held the picture out of her reach and said, "Come to the office."
"Tell me know!"
"Emily…"
"No Aaron, tell me know!"
Reluctantly Hotch handed over the picture.
Emily gasped, "No, it can't be…how did he…I thought he was…" Emily felt her chest starting to heave.
Hotch could see Emily starting to panic, "He guided her to her chair. Deep breaths…" Hotch looked at his team, "No one touches another case until we find him!" Hotch knelt in front of Emily and brushed the loose hair out of her face, "We're going to find him Emily…"
"It's written in blood…and the picture…he was in the parking garage when I got out of my car this morning…how did he get out?"
Hotch cupped Emily's face in his hands, "You listen to me. We will find him. You are going to be okay."
Emily mustered her courage and new determination. She regained control and fiercely she said, "Your right, we will find him." Emily stood up and looked at Hotch, "Let's go find this son of a bitch." Emily threw the picture on her desk and they went to work.
The picture lay like a bad omen, in black and white Emily was walking past her vehicle. Harvey had only been two cars down, taking her photograph. At the bottom of the picture was written in his blood:
I'm gonna get you.
Harvey
There you have it! I really would like to know what you thought of the last chapter! Thank you all again so very much!
